People often ask me, who is the typical Porter traveller? My answer: there’s no such person. Our passengers are as varied as our destinations. And we pride ourselves on treating each and every passenger with equal care. But if you were to press me, I guess I’d say that the majority of those we carry on Porter fall into one of two categories. Our time-sensitive business travellers are an important focus for us. These frequent flyers appreciate the regular schedule on our busiest routes – Ottawa to Toronto and Toronto to Montréal – and the high level of service we offer. More recently, we’ve seen a rise in our leisure travellers, who may be going on their annual holiday or looking for a weekend getaway. Our Neighbourhood and Weekender destination guides – which in this issue include shopping in Leslieville and outdoor adventure around Timmins – are all about expanding horizons. But we don’t like to categorise here at Porter – we believe in providing an experience as distinctive and exceptional as all those we welcome on board. We’re glad you came along for the ride. SENSATION ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO NORTH AMERICA ABOARD THE JUNKERS JU52: A JOURNEY INTO RIMOWA HISTORY For us, it is an affair of the heart: In June 2012, the RIMOWA JU52 will take off for its North American Tour.

1937: Fascinated by the aircraf t of the pioneering days, Richard Morszeck, son of RIMOWA founder Paul Morszeck, discovers aircraft aluminum for luggage production. The first overseas trunk made of lightweight metal takes off. 1950: The birth of the aluminum suitcase with the characteristic grooves. Now, it is not only the exterior that imitates the Junkers JU52 with corrugated sheeting – the technology does too. Minimum weight is combined with an extremely high degree of stability. 2012: The RIMOWA JU52 crosses the Atlantic and embarks on a major tour of North America. The stops along the way are Los Angeles, Denver, Oshkosh, New York, Waterloo and Toronto. The flight is an event in itself, partly because it is the first passenger-certified Junkers JU52 to master this trip since 1937. Today, RIMOWA and the Junkers JU52 symbolize quality and the spirit of invention, as well as “Made in Germany” workmanship.

Face the Music Andréanne Sasseville, is Director of Content Development and Industry Relations at SiriusXM Canada. Here, she explains how music plays a starring role in her life. I work at SiriusXM Canada; we broadcast music, entertainment and news to over 120 satellite radio stations, and we have over 2 million subscribers.

My title is a bit of a mouthful, but what it essentially means is this: Radio broadcasters have what’s called conditions of licence. In order to broadcast, the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) stipulates that we re-inject a percentage of our revenue back into Canadian culture. I’m responsible for overseeing those investments, most of them through sponsorships in music or comedy festivals and awards shows, like the SiriusXM Indie Awards and the Junos, and also the Polaris Music Prize. It’s really about promoting Canadian culture and artists and exposing them to a broad audience within both Canada and North America.

I studied at the McGill Conservatory in Montréal, and I also have a bachelor’s degree in public relations. I had been working in PR with artists for a few years when, through friends of friends, I heard about the plan to bring Sirius to Canada. The owners were looking for someone perfectly bilingual who knew the music industry and had PR and strategy skills. I was in on the launch in 2004, and I’ve been with them ever since. Sirius has gone from being run by a handful of people at the beginning to employing over 100 people today.

J’ai fait mes études au Conservatoire McGill de Montréal et j’ai aussi un diplôme en relations publiques. Je travaillais dans les RP avec des artistes depuis quelques années quand, par des amis, j’ai entendu dire que Sirius voulait s’installer au Canada. Les propriétaires désiraient une personne bilingue qui connaisse le secteur de la musique et avec une expérience stratégique en RP. J’ai participé au lancement en 2004 et je suis toujours là. Sirius, qui ne comptait qu’une poignée d’employés au départ, a maintenant une équipe de plus de 100 collaborateurs.

I’ve always loved music. My mom took me to my first concert, the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, when I was three and a half years old, and I started piano lessons when I was four. The first rock gig I saw was The Jackson Five in 1981. My parents love the arts, and I inherited that love. I’d always wanted to combine music and communications, and this job provides the perfect opportunity for that. Some people become disillusioned with their passion if it becomes their profession. I never have.

J’ai toujours adoré la musique. Ma mère m’a emmenée à mon premier concert, l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, à seulement trois ans et demi, et j’ai commencé le piano à quatre ans. Mon premier concert de rock, c’était pour les Jackson Five en 19 81. Mes parents adoraient les arts et m’ont transmis cette passion. J’ai toujours voulu associer musique et communication et mon travail m’offre la chance de faire cela. Certains perdent leur passion si elle devient leur travail. C’est loin d’être mon cas.

There’s a quality that makes Canadian music unique, and as far as I’m concerned, it comes from the detail that goes into the production. Canadian artists are perfectionists. I guess it’s a national trait, like the way we’re always apologizing.

La musique canadienne a une qualité unique qui, selon moi, vient de la qualité de la production. Les artistes canadiens sont des perfectionnistes. Je crois que c’est une caractéristique nationale, tout comme notre manie de toujours nous excuser.

What records or artists would I pick as a showcase for what Canadian music can offer? Wow, that’s the toughest question you could ask me. Every week I listen to a new album that I think is the best thing. The all-time classic artists for me are Neil Young and Daniel Lanois. Then there are those I’ve discovered over the past few years, like The Trews, Galaxie and Jenn Grant. Then there are the new artists I’m currently listening to, like Patrick Watson and Misstress Barbara. I could go on. And on. That’s why this job is such a privilege; it provides my life with a million amazing soundtracks.

Quels disques ou artistes je choisirais comme exemple de réussite canadienne ? Quelle question difficile. Chaque semaine, j’écoute un album que je choisis en pensant que c’est le meilleur du moment. Eastern Promises From impeccable furniture shops and eco-friendly baby boutiques to Irish pubs and Italian wine bars, Toronto’s east-end Leslieville ’hood has officially arrived. Avec ses jolis magasins de meubles, ses boutiques écolos pour bébés, ses pubs irlandais et bars à vin italiens, Leslieville est le voisinage hip de Toronto. Occasionally referred to as Toronto’s Brooklyn, Leslieville is more compact, and less self-consciously hip, than its outer borough New York counterpart. But Leslieville, too, was once a blue-collar, semi-industrial area, and its recent demographic shift – an influx of young families, and a growing gay community – has resulted in a pleasant patchwork of artisanal boutiques, adorable eateries and old-school dive bars. The gentrification now seems inevitable, but the subtle reminders of Leslieville’s gritty past give this quasi-village a charming edge that no doggie spa can take away.

Parfois surnommée la Brooklyn de Toronto, Leslieville est plus compacte et moins ostentatoire que ce voisinage urbain newyorkais. Comme lui, elle était jadis une zone semi-industrielle de cols bleus et son récent bouleversement démographique – afflux de jeunes familles, communauté gay en expansion – s’est traduit par un patchwork plaisant de boutiques artisanales, de restaurants sympas et de bars à l’ancienne. L’embourgeoisement semble inévitable, mais de subtils rappels du passé travailleur donnent à ce village un charme que même un spa pour chien ne saurait altérer.

Leslieville’s never been short on good Italian, but this newcomer is elevating the game. The dove-grey dining room is both serene and sleek, and the menu is deceptively simple, authentic and hearty. Dishes change weekly, but there’s always fresh homemade pasta, inventive insalate and a dozen-plus wines, mostly from small Italian producers. In an area wryly but accurately dubbed “Strollerville,” it’s no surprise that Toronto’s most impeccably curated baby shop would put down roots here. While the prices might tax your AmEx, they’re worth it: Everything in the five-year-old store – from the sleek, Keekaroo wooden high chairs to the Boob nursing hoodie and the one-ofa-kind Cate and Levi “upcycled” sock puppets, made in Toronto – has been produced with an eye to sustainability, fair labour practices and local sourcing. Ce voisinage ayant ironiquement été surnommé « poussette-ville » (il mérite bien ce sobriquet), il est normal que la boutique pour bébé offrant le choix le plus complet de la ville y ait élu domicile. Leslieville’s earliest retail pioneers were the owners of antique shops lured by large storefronts and cheap rent. While the rents have gone up, the best of these shops – including GUFF – have remained. The acronym stands for Great Used Furniture Finds, and on any given day, the shop overflows with such treasures. The stock is mostly teak, midcentury modern (keep your eyes peeled for furniture by the great Canadian designer Russell Spanner), but there are also well-priced traditional antiques and industrial objets. Prices are competitive, and items move quickly – a smart vintage leather suitcase, say, could be here and gone within a week. “I grew up around old stuff,” says owner Victoria Dinnick, “and I don’t like to see stuff thrown out.” No kidding. This twostorey vintage stalwart is stocked with jewellery, postcards, alarm clocks, stuffed animals, frocks, diaries, wingtip shoes – all of it from sometime between the 1880s and 1970s. “The 1980s stuff is aging in the basement,” says Dinnick. « J’ai grandi au milieu des vieilleries, dit la propriétaire Victoria Dinnick, et je n’aime rien jeter. » Pas possible. This man-made peninsula at the foot of Leslie Street is a mecca for the city’s birders, beachcombers and bicyclists. Cars are forbidden, and the park’s wetlands, ponds and coves have become, over the 50 years since the breakwater was built, home to 400 different plant species and more than 300 birds, including the snowy owl and the great blue heron. According to co-owner Jonathan Hlibka, this 295-seat movie house, built in 1910, is the oldest operating theatre in Canada. It’s been through many incarnations, owners and names reflecting the city’s changing immigrant patterns; at one point, it showed only Greek movies, then Chinese and Bollywood flicks. Now, its three film-buff proprietors (including Euan Mowat, who also owns Grinder, the adjoining café) “focus on helping indie and art-house films find an audience,” says Hlibka. Tot-friendly Saturday mornings are devoted to classic cartoons. While Leslieville doesn’t yet have a proper hotel, this under-the-radar boutique property situates you perfectly on the eastern edge of downtown, a short streetcar ride away from the ’hood. Leslieville feels slower and is less thick with people than downtown, but it’s changed dramatically. Now there’s something new opening every month: cafés, bakeries, restaurants, markets. We love it. It’s only 10 minutes by streetcar to Yonge Street, but it’s one of the few places left in the city without any real high-rises. You can still see the whole sky. Only a few years back, Leslieville was considered working class. Now there’s a lot of diversity in terms of income – there are still the halfway houses, but they stand next to yuppie homes. The neighbourhood is self-contained; with all the great new restaurants and shops, we almost never leave. It feels like a small Ontario town. In the big black box that houses the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA), artistic director David Liss is putting the finishing touches on an exhibition for the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival. Within weeks, the space will be alive with Toronto’s art elite at the grand opening of the show. Oversized photographs of North Koreans performing carefully choreographed stadium shows are leaning against a wall, waiting to be mounted, as Liss and his co-curators – Bonnie Rubenstein, Contact’s artistic director, and Matthew Brower, from the University of Toronto Art Centre – hem and haw.

“Maybe that one should go at the end.” “That one has rows of people, and this one has rows of people. Let’s put it there.” “Let’s swap them!” The room is modest, but MOCCA is an institution that knows how to do a lot with a little. Before it emerged a decade ago, the product of corporate upheaval, serendipity and tenacity, Toronto had no significant gallery dedicated to contemporary art. Under Liss’s guidance, the museum has grown from a suburban one-man shop with a $63,000 budget into a $1 million downtown operation that attracts upwards of 40,000 visitors a year. “We get that number of people based on interest in the content,” says Liss. “The building itself isn’t particularly spectacular.” With a distinctive swoop of salt-and-pepper hair, and dressed for this preparatory day in numerous layers of monochrome clothing – jacket, vest, flannel shirt – and Converse sneakers, Liss has been the museum’s driving force since day one. As he guides a visitor through the two-gallery museum, it becomes clear how much can happen in a small space. MOCCA occupies an old textile factory that’s tucked so far behind a parking lot, it’s hardly noticeable from the street. Yet once again, the museum is preparing to mount an exhibition of world-renowned artists. This time, it’s a collection of street photographs organized around the idea of public space: The North Korean performers are set off against a series of students in Brazzaville doing their homework under street lights, and another featuring digitally composed large-format images of posh American city streets. Avant son émergence, il y a une dizaine d’années, fruit de la faillite d’une entreprise, d’un heureux hasard et de ténacité, Toronto ne comptait aucune galerie majeure consacrée à l’art contemporain. Sous la houlette de David Liss, ce musée de banlieue dont le budget était de 63 000 $ s’est transformé en institution de centre-ville qui brasse 1 million de dollars par an et attire plus de 40 000 visiteurs. « L’intérêt est surtout suscité par les expositions, dit David Liss. Le bâtiment présente en lui-même un intérêt limité. Avec sa mèche poivre et sel, ses vêtements monochromes assortis – veston, gilet, chemise de flanelle – et chaussures Converse, Liss est la locomotive du musée depuis ses débuts. En parcourant les deux galeries du musée, on réalise combien ce petit espace regorge de trouvailles. Le MOCCA occupe une ancienne usine de textile en retrait d’un stationnement, si bien que de la rue il est presque invisible. Pourtant, il prépare une nouvelle exposition de grands artistes internationaux. Cette fois, il s’agit de photos de rue arrangées selon le concept d’espace public : les Nord-Coréens font face à des étudiants de Brazzaville qui font leurs devoirs à la lumière des éclairages de rue, ou à de grands formats de rues américaines chic composés numériquement. Rafman comprises blown-up images captured by Google’s Street View, highlighting the blurred faces and evocative postures of the bystanders caught on camera. The longer Liss spends guiding a visitor through the new exhibition, the more impassioned he becomes about the ideas it embodies. When asked about the copyright implications of Rafman’s found art, he all but erupts: “What are the copyright issues around Google taking pictures of my house? At what point can this incident, this street corner, be put up for everyone to see?” MOCCA’s own story is a tale of individual passions. The institution got its start thanks to another enthusiast – Garth Drabinsky, the co-founder of Cineplex Odeon and Livent, who began collecting Canadian art to show in the lobbies of his theatres. He even created a gallery space in North York, at what is now the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Eventually, Livent collapsed and Drabinsky was convicted of fraud. A lobbying effort saved the gallery, which was reincarnated as the Art Gallery of North York. But its patron – and its budget – were gone. Soon, its sole remaining employee departed. That was when Liss, an artist and curator living in Montréal, was recruited. Looking at Toronto’s art scene, he saw a gap that wasn’t being filled by the small North York gallery. “There are some great institutions in Canada, but Toronto, our biggest city, was lacking a significant museum of contemporary art.” So he set about building one. Liss drummed up buzz by engaging local artists, and in 2005

Cette institution a vu le jour grâce à un autre enthousiaste. Garth Drabinsky, cofondateur du Cineplex Odeon et de Livent, exposait des œuvres d’art dans le lobby de ses cinémas. Il a même créé une galerie à North York, dans ce qui est aujourd’hui le Toronto Centre for the Arts. En fin de compte, Livent a fait faillite et Drabinsky a été condamné pour fraude. Grâce à de nombreux soutiens, la galerie fut sauvée et devint la Art Gallery of North York. Mais, son bienfaiteur et son budget étaient partis, suivis par l’unique employé. C’est alors que fut recruté David Liss, artiste et commissaire d’expositions à Montréal. Sur la scène artistique de Toronto, ce dernier repéra une niche que n’exploitait pas la petite North York Gallery. « Au Canada, nous avons de grandes institutions, mais Toronto, notre plus grande ville, manquait d’un musée d’art contemporain digne d’elle. » C’est ainsi qu’il entreprit d’en fonder un. Liss suscita un intérêt en recrutant des artistes locaux et, en 2005, il déplaça la galerie vers le centre, la 19

he moved the gallery downtown, where it was renamed, and where it embedded itself among a network of galleries, cafés, restaurants and bars. A partnership with the National Gallery of Canada has made MOCCA a Toronto home for the Ottawa gallery’s contemporary art, with rotating exhibitions that complement the shows in the museum’s main space. And for the past eight years, MOCCA has been a focal point of the Contact festival, a city-wide event. “MOCCA has very strong programming – it’s very diverse, and it’s a very social space as well,” says Contact’s Rubenstein. “It doesn’t have that elitist feel.” This might explain why MOCCA has become such a popular venue on the arts-party circuit. It’s also helped the museum become a launching pad for ambitious local artists. Most recently, it was home to “Necropolis,” an installation by Tasman Richardson, an innovative, local multimedia artist. For the show, the entire gallery was painted black and rigged with platforms and ramps, creating a maze of tunnels dotted with televisions. “You wouldn’t have recognized this space,” says Liss. “You had to negotiate all the way through a labyrinth of video installations.” But just as Toronto is embracing MOCCA, the museum is about to change. MOCCA’s lease on the textile factory will end in 2014; the land, made valuable by exactly the kind of culture that MOCCA has fostered, is being turned into condominiums. For Liss, this means opportunity: The museum has, in a sense, outgrown its current digs. The time is ripe to move into a new, larger building that can accommodate Liss’s ambitions. “The next step is to become the Museum of Contemporary Art,” he says, suggesting a move that would put Toronto in the company of Denver, Chicago and Los Angeles, all hosts of major contemporary-art museums. “We’re going to the next level.”

Au cours des huit dernières années, le MOCCA est devenu le point central du festival Contact qui a lieu dans toute la ville. « La programmation du MOCCA est très riche, très diverse et c’est aussi un espace de rencontres, dit Rubenstein du festival Contact. Il n’y a aucun élitisme.» Ce qui explique sans doute pourquoi le MOCCA est devenu une destination populaire du circuit artistique et le musée a contribué au lancement d’artistes du coin ambitieux. Il a récemment accueilli Necropolis, une installation de Tasman Richardson, artiste local multimédia novateur. Pour son exposition, la galerie a été peinte tout en noir et équipée de plateformes et de rampes pour la transformer en labyrinthe parsemé de téléviseurs. « Vous n’auriez pas reconnu les lieux, dit Liss. Il fallait louvoyer dans un dédale d’installations vidéo. » À l’heure où le MOCCA semble être devenu la tasse de thé de Toronto, le musée va changer. Son bail dans ces locaux expire en 2014. Le terrain ayant pris de la valeur grâce au genre de culture encouragée par le MOCCA, il est requis pour la construction d’appartements. Pour Liss, c’est une opportunité : le musée se sentait un peu à l’étroit dans ces locaux et le temps était venu de trouver un nouvel écrin digne des ambitions du conservateur. « Prochaine étape, devenir le Musée d’art contemporain, dit-il, en évoquant une transformation qui mettrait Toronto sur un pied d’égalité avec Denver, Chicago et Los Angeles, qui possèdent toutes de grands musées d’art contemporain. « Nous passons au niveau supérieur. » 21

Set amid sprawling fields and forest, Cedar Meadows is a 39 -room resort that co-owner Richard Lafleur began building with his seven brothers a dozen years ago. “Everywhere I travelled, I took notes,” he says. “If I liked the way I felt, I figured out why and wrote it down. High ceilings, for example: Now even in the basic rooms at Cedar Meadows there’s an extra foot. It gives the whole space a better feel.” Today Lafleur is co-owner with just one brother, but Cedar Meadows is still very much a family affair. Lafleur’s wife, Chantal, a florist by trade, is in charge of the banquets and weddings hosted there. “And our three daughters,” says Richard, “they all grew up, moved away, and now they’re back.” The three daughters are Marie-France, Mélanie and Lisanne. Marie-France is the hotel manager. She painted the murals in the restaurant, including the giant one above the bar, depicting coureurs de bois in a canoe, that features her father and some of his brothers paddling into the rapids. Mélanie, a registered massage therapist, is the star of the spa. Lisanne is a budding landscape architect and has a lot of work to do on the resort’s grounds: “We’ve got a forest of saplings that we’re just waiting to plant here,” says Richard, waving at the stretch of land between the Mattagami River and the hotel reception. The Cedar Meadows motto is “Balance your life with nature,” so starting the day with a jog along the riverbank seems appropriate. If, however, running’s not your thing, go for the infrared sauna treatment instead: 45 minutes under the 150-degree lamps can burn 700 calories – which is like going for a 20-kilometre run but without any of the hard work.

Une fois adultes, elles ont quitté le nid, mais désormais, elles sont de retour. » Les trois filles sont Marie-France, Mélanie et Lisanne. Marie-France est directrice de l’hôtel. Elle a peint les fresques du restaurant y compris la grande au-dessus du bar qui représente des coureurs des bois en canoë sous les traits de son père et de ses frères pagayant dans les rapides. Mélanie, masseuse thérapeute agréée est aux commandes du spa. Lisanne, architecte paysager en herbe est bien occupée par les jardins du complexe : « Nous avons une forêt de jeunes arbres qui n’attendent que d’être plantés », dit Richard en désignant un bout de terrain entre la rivière Mattagami et la réception. La devise de Cedar Meadows étant « Vivre en harmonie avec la nature », il semble approprié de commencer la journée par un jogging le long de la rivière. At 3 p.m. everyday, there is a wagon tour of the on-site wildlife – an opportunity to get close to some well-cared-for swans, deer, elk, moose and bison. Guide Bryan Salois makes a 300-pound buffalo seem almost approachable. Asked if he ever gets scared of the buffalo, he shakes his head: “Of these guys, no. I’m more scared of bees.” Cedar Meadows’s main attraction is the Scandinavian-style spa. To make the most of it, take a couple hours to enjoy the sauna, steam room and outdoor hot tub, interspersed with plunges in the cold-water pool and timed relaxation. Still not completely de-stressed? Get a massage. If you can book it with Mélanie Lafleur, consider yourself blessed. Ms. Lafleur is a master of her craft, and she’s vastly entertaining. Between her face imitations of the Joker and an emu, and her stories about massaging celebrities, you might for a moment forget about how good she’s making you feel. With toxins released and muscles relaxed, head to the resort’s Voyageur Dining Room for dinner. Chef Jason Wilson, who was born and raised in Timmins, recently returned after an eightyear stretch as head chef of Brix, an acclaimed contemporary Canadian restaurant and wine bar in Vancouver’s Yaletown neighbourhood. “There’s nothing north of Toronto like what I do,” he says with a disarming smile. Wilson cuts his own carefully selected meats, preparing them with, for example, bourbon-and-wild-mushroom demiglazes or vodka-tarragon reductions. One night at Cedar Meadows is hardly enough, but the Elk Lake Eco Centre, about a two-and-ahalf-hour drive away, awaits. If you depart Timmins

On en oublie parfois tout le bien qu’elle nous fait. Une fois les toxines éliminées et vos muscles détendus, soupez au Voyageur Dining Room. Le chef Jason Wilson, natif de Timmins rentré au bercail après huit années passées aux fourneaux du Brix, fameux restaurant et bar à vin canadien du voisinage de Yaletown à Vancouver, déclare en souriant tranquillement : « Au nord de Toronto, personne ne fait ce que je fais. » Wilson découpe lui-même sa viande choisie avec soin et la prépare avec, par exemple, un déglaçage au bourbon et champignons sauvages ou une réduction de sauce à la vodka et estragon. 25

mid-morning, you’ll reach the Kenogami Bridge Inn by lunchtime. Opt for a tasty burger and fries, or the popular chicken wings, which come with a batch of addictive homemade potato chips. Wash it down with a frothy pint of Alexander Keith’s IPA as you sit on the patio and watch the Kenogami Lake flow into a river. Before you get back onto Highway 11, stock up on snacks and souvenirs at MacPherson’s General Store, where you can find wildlife pajamas, retrorustic tin signs and preserves galore, all of which are perfect gifts for those not lucky enough to be travelling with you. About an hour later, you’ll arrive in the tiny historic town of Elk Lake – a curious name, as there are no elk, and the lake is really just a widening of the beautiful Montreal River. Just downstream is the Elk Lake Eco Centre, a nonprofit vacation destination, whose mandate, says resort manager Pamela Hamel, is threefold: “education, relaxation, recreation.” The resort specializes in wilderness getaways customized to visitors’ tastes, whether that be foraging for edible plants in the woods, touring abandoned silver mines or just canoeing down the river. Hamel always has suggestions for activities that visitors can discover, from picking wild blueberries to experiencing a sweat lodge. Although the banquet hall, bar and river-view hot-tub make the Eco Centre a popular destination for corporate retreats and weddings, it also has a community-oriented feeling that evokes the kind of ambience you might find at a utopian summer camp for grown-ups. Here is common ground for tree huggers and tree cutters – reflected in structures whose materials are sourced from the surrounding forest. The Eco Centre’s building won the 2008 Wood Works! Wood Advocate award. “Building with wood is the most environmental thing to do,” says Hamel. “It’s renewable and local. Right here we’ve got some of the most sustainable forests in the world.” For a firsthand view of the local forestry industry, take a tour of the massive Elk Lake Mill. It’s right around the corner from the lodge, and in just 45 minutes your understanding of how one of Canada’s greatest resources is actually managed could grow a thousand-fold. What’s more, the speeds a simple plank of wood can reach are stunning. 01

If speed is your thing, talk to Mike Grant. He and his wife, Nancy, run the Sunnybank B&B, a house on the river, just down the road from the Eco Centre. Grant will be your guide for a four-wheeling tour of the logging roads, where speed-limit signs are rarely seen. If you’ve never been on an ATV, take the opportunity here. You’ll experience all the roaring adrenaline you’d feel when riding a snowmobile but without any of the hassle of ice and snow. Mike can also take you fishing. A long-time local, he knows spots that you won’t find on a map. (Getting to them might also involve an ATV journey.)

He has small boats hidden on the shores of various remote lakes in the region – places so serene you’ll feel like the only fisherman on the planet, let alone the lake. And chances are extremely good that you’ll hook a fish or two. Bring the catch of the day back to the Eco Centre, where the kitchen staff will be happy to turn it into an inspired appetizer (Moroccan-style pike bites) or a full meal (barbecued trout with homemade dill sauce, root vegetables and locally foraged fiddleheads). If fishing’s not your thing, fear not: You can simply order off the menu, for which nearly half the ingredients are sourced locally from Temiskaming Claybelt farmers and suppliers. A nonfish favourite is the local, organic steak frites. After dinner, if you’re craving some nightlife, just sit tight: This is the only restaurant (and bar) for miles, so if the locals are going out, they’re coming to you. During the silver-mining boom of the early 20th century, Elk Lake was called Elk City and had a population of nearly 10,000. Its founding is attributed to Jack Munroe, a prospector, war hero, football star, boxer and mining engineer. His story, as well as the history of Elk Lake, is kept alive in the Elk Lake Heritage Museum. Housed in a quaint former church and schoolhouse dating back to 1909, the museum concisely captures the silverboom era of Elk City. If you’re lucky enough, you can learn some local history firsthand from 91-year-old Dorothy Farmiloe, a celebrated poet and author of 21 books, including Jack Munroe: Canada’s Forgotten Hero and Elk Lake: Lore and Legend. “I just write books,” she says. “Don’t care what happens to them after. This place is beautiful regardless.” Farmiloe’s home is full of original works of art by another local legend, Lionel Venne. He has had

Il a caché des bateaux sur les berges de plusieurs lacs – des retraites si tranquilles qu’on pense être le seul pêcheur sur toute la planète. Et il y a de bonnes chances d’attraper un ou deux poissons. Rapportez vos prises du jour à l’Eco Centre où les cuisiniers se feront un plaisir de les transformer en entrée appétissante (bouchées de brochet à la marocaine) ou en plat de résistance (grillade de truite sauce à l’aneth maison, tubercules et crosses de fougères locales). Si vous n’aimez pas pêcher, le menu vous donne l’embarras du choix. Près de la moitié de ses ingrédients proviennent des fermes et fournisseurs de Temiskaming Claybelt. Le steak frites bio est un grand classique. Après le souper, nul besoin de bouger si vous cherchez de l’animation : comme c’est le seul bar-restaurant à des lieues à la ronde, les gens du voisinage s’y pressent. Lors de la ruée vers l’argent du début du XXe siècle, Elk Lake s’appelait Elk City et comptait près de 10 000 habitants. Venne makes the Nativity Parish – with mass on Saturday nights – a rare artistic find, and well worth a visit. You can try your luck and pop by unannounced – or just ask Pamela Hamel to arrange a visit. Pam is here, after all, to “help you discover stuff.” And even if the silver mines aren’t what they used to be, there are still loads of treasure hidden in these parts. That perhaps, is the only problem with Elk Lake, and indeed, this entire region: The more you find, the harder it is to leave.

It’s not in a hole in the ground (it’s actually up the hill from Place d’Youville), and the waiters don’t have hairy feet; in fact, the only concession to Middle Earth at this unassuming but entirely winning French bistro is the division of the main courses into “land” and “sea” choices, with duck confit, venison carpaccio and sea trout (as opposed to, say, braised Balrog or saddle of Orc) among the highlights. The brick interiors are a cozy respite from the city rather than a nod to Mount Doom. In short, the Hobbit Bistro is a Shire thing. The power players are hungry for the refined kid goat biryani and pork chop vindaloo, but they’re also marvelling at the faceted wood installation across the ceiling and the carriage-style booths designed by Martin Vahtra. This Hintonburg opening puts a decidedly Ontarian spin on the small plate, with carpaccio bison and Parmesan biscuits topped with Dijonnaise, and grape-tomato Caprese salad, among its most popular offerings. Photos of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin loom from the walls, giving their Rat Pack benediction to the selection of microbrewery beers on tap. When summer finally hits, Timmins heads to the great outdoors for a 10-week series of concerts by local musicians, held on Wednesdays at the TH&VS Pavilion at Hollinger Park. This year the program kicks off on June 29 and runs till August 31. Expect everything from country to folk, blues, rock and jazz, with maybe even a little bit of grunge, grime, dubstep or death metal thrown in. The coffee is shipped in daily from I Deal in Kensington Market, and the café accompaniments include soups (white bean and sage, pea and mint), sandwiches (pesto chicken and feta, goat cheese and olive tapenade) and irresistible indulgences (coffee toffee cookies). The People Person After a spell as a veterinarian’s assistant, senior purser and Porter veteran Sarah Taylor found that her true calling involved helping people – not cats. I’m one of the senior pursers for Porter. A purser’s main responsibility is to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers. As a purser, I endeavour to create a good working environment for the other crew members. There are other things that pursers do, too: We coordinate all the on-board service activities, for instance. On most Porter flights there are two cabin crew, and the purser does the safety briefings and makes the announcements. Pursers also make sure safety procedures are followed, and we’re responsible for detailing reports for customs and immigration – that famous paperwork you’re always hearing about.

What qualities make a good purser? You have to be able to read people. Business passengers might be content with their newspapers and coffee, while leisure passengers might want to talk about their trip. I love welcoming our regular flyers. We know a lot of them by name, as well as what kind of drink they want. That personal touch means a lot. My first job was as a veterinary assistant. I always loved animals. But travel was also a big interest for me, and I decided I wanted a more fast-paced work environment. I always had thought about being a flight attendant, so I did a two-year diploma program in a travel and tourism flight services at Seneca College in Toronto. In 2003, I got a job in customer service at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport at Porter’s property management company, now called Porter FBO. We always knew the airline was coming, and as soon as positions opened up, I was selected as a flight attendant. I was almost immediately put up for the purser role. I was on board before we even had a plane. I live about 120 kilometres north of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, in Barrie, Ontario. My husband and I bought our place just over a year ago; we like being in the suburbs. We’re outdoorsy, and we love to travel. We don’t have any kids, so we have the luxury of being able to take off a couple times a year. If I’m on another airline, I pick up on all the little things that I think could be done better. For instance, when I was on a flight from Los Angeles to Toronto, the seat belt signs were kept on the whole time. This was a long flight, and people were stuck in their seats – purely for the convenience of the crew rather than the passengers, which I think is backwards. My proudest moment on Porter? Working on our royal flight with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip during their Canadian tour back in 2010. I didn’t speak to them or get to serve them – it was a really short flight, and we were told they didn’t want to be disturbed, though we did have the queen’s favourite brand of tea on board, just in case. Also, I was stationed at the back of the plane, and there’s a rule that if you’re introduced to Her Majesty, you can’t then turn your back on her, so I would have had to tie myself in knots to make it work. I’m going to remain at Porter for as long as they want me around. I know I’m not meant to be in an office setting – I love to deal with people and that every day is different. I might eventually decide to become an in-flight trainer; in that role, I’d meet new flight attendant recruits and bring them into the Porter family, but I’d also still get to fly, so I would have the best of both worlds. Whatever happens, I want to stay on the planes. I smile the whole time I’m at work, because I know I’m in the right place.

Quelles sont les qualités d’un commissaire ? Il faut comprendre les gens. Les passagers d’affaires se contentent souvent de leur journal et d’un café, alors que les touristes veulent bavarder. J’adore nos voyageurs réguliers. Je connais leur nom et le genre de boisson qu’ils préfèrent. Cette touche personnelle leur importe beaucoup. Mon premier emploi a été assistante vétérinaire. J’ai toujours aimé les animaux. Mais, j’aimais aussi les voyages et je voulais un environnement plus stimulant. Aussi, j’ai suivi une formation de deux ans en voyages et tourisme aériens au Seneca College de Toronto. En 2003, j’ai trouvé un poste au service clientèle de l’aéroport de Billy Bishop, pour la société de Porter qui s’occupe d’immobilier et rebaptisée aujourd’hui Porter FBO. Nous savions que la compagnie aérienne allait bientôt suivre et, dès que cela a été possible, j’ai postulé pour devenir membre d’équipage. On m’a vite propulsée au rang de commissaire. J’étais à bord avant même que nous ayons un avion. Je vis à environ 120 km au nord de Billy Bishop, à Barrie en Ontario. Avec mon mari, nous avons acheté une maison il y a un an. Nous aimons la banlieue et le grand air. Comme nous n’avons pas d’enfants, nous pouvons nous payer des vacances deux fois par an. Dans les avions d’autres compagnies, je note tous les détails qui pourraient être améliorés. Sur un vol de Los Angeles à Toronto, le signal des ceintures est resté allumé en permanence. Alors, sur ce long vol, les passagers sont restés assis juste pour faciliter la tâche du personnel au détriment de leur confort. Mon moment le plus fier chez Porter ? Être à bord lors du voyage de la reine Élizabeth et du prince Phillip en 2010. Je ne leur ai pas parlé – le vol était très court et on nous avait dit de ne pas les déranger, même si nous avions le thé favori de la reine à bord au cas où. En plus, j’étais à l’arrière de l’appareil et comme on ne doit jamais tourner le dos à la reine j’aurais dû faire un numéro de contorsionniste si je lui avais été présentée. Je resterai chez Porter aussi longtemps qu’on voudra de moi. Je ne suis pas faite pour le bureau – j’aime le contact et le changement. Un jour, je serais peut-être chargée de la formation en vol, un rôle où on accueille les nouvelles recrues pour les intégrer dans la famille Porter – tout en continuant à voler. Quoi qu’il arrive, je veux voler. Au travail, j’ai toujours le sourire parce que je sais bien que j’ai trouvé ma voie. 49
