New Dawn Pittsburgh was once a heartland of heavy industry, and now its historic warehouses are morphing into coffee shops, craft breweries and world-class hotels. Steel City is slowly reinventing itself, and Lawrenceville is a shining example of its transformation. If you want to see first-hand how Pittsburgh is changing, just take a walk through Lawrenceville. For more than a century, the neighbourhood thrived as an industrial hub, where thousands worked in the warehouses dotting the nearby Allegheny River. When the steel industry collapsed in the 1960s, local shops closed up and the streets went quiet. But today, the main drag of Butler Street is filled with indie craft breweries, boutiques boasting wares made by local artists and restaurants with lines snaking down the sidewalks. Yet for every storefront plastered in butcher paper or condo under construction, Lawrenceville is still a community that treasures its local gems, like the beautiful 300-acre Allegheny Cemetery, where Lawrenceville-born composer Stephen Foster is buried, and the bustling farmers’ market in Arsenal Park. This restaurant’s charm is evident the second you step inside, with exposed brick walls, marble countertops and tropical plants. And then there’s the food. The Vandal’s casual fare is driven by what’s in season, and runs the gamut from crackling fried chicken to beets covered with tiny edible flowers. Grab a table near the open kitchen and watch chef Csilla Thackray at work. The artful dishes come on plastic cafeteria trays – a cheeky move you’d expect from a place named The Vandal. Grapperia

There’s no doubt that Pittsburgh is a beer-drinking town (Lawrenceville alone has four craft breweries), but if anyone can convert an Iron City swigger into a cocktail lover, it’s local chef Domenic Branduzzi. This cozy bar focuses on the Italian spirit grappa, infused here with ingredients like lavender, chamomile and banana peppers, or served straight up in flights of four. Visit Grapperia for an aperitif and a cheese plate before heading to Branduzzi’s other restaurant, Piccolo Forno, located next door. After falling in love with cafés in Europe that serve confectioneries until the wee hours, Ally Slayden was inspired to bring that vibe to Pittsburgh. At Butterwood expect to find offerings like buttermilk cake slathered in pistachio frosting, brown butter blondies or vegan chocolate olive oil cake. Open late, it’s the go-to spot for the post-theatre crowd. Five years ago, chef Justin Severino brought throngs of foodies to Lawrenceville with Cure, his Mediterranean charcuterie spot. Now he’s doing the same with Morcilla, specializing in Basque-style small plates. The main draw here is the montaditos, Spain’s answer to little sandwiches. Do try the namesake morcilla sausage or the oxtail, both of which come atop crispy bread. Although this menswear mecca is new to the ’hood, it’s already become a destination for raw denim, cool buttonup shirts and a vast selection of socks that will suit the outdoorsy hiker, hipster and businessman alike. Among the perfectly tailored shirts and timeless trench coats, there are more eclectic finds, too, like ties and scarves made out of vintage Japanese fabrics, or a Southwestern-style belt by Camp Hero, which features the word “Pittsburgh” emblazoned in beads. Pittsburgh now joins the ranks of New York City, London and Los Angeles with the opening of Ace Hotel. Located just outside Lawrenceville and housed inside a century-old YMCA building, it features many architectural details from its previous life, like terrazzo floors and the old-school gymnasium, now used as an event space. (In another nod to the past, some of the guest rooms come with record players and a selection of vinyl.) For dinner, head down to the Whitfield for braised rabbit gnocchi or roasted duck breast. This indie theatre is the brainchild of a group of film buffs, who in 2014 created an Indiegogo campaign to transform an old row house into a single-screen cinema. The aptly named Row House Cinema now shows cult classics like Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski and The Princess Bride. The adjoining Bierport beer shop has more than 800 bottles of beer that moviegoers can drink in the theatre. Local bonus: Lawrenceville residents receive discounted tickets. Owner Joy Borelli-Edwards opened her gallery in the neighbourhood in 2007 – which in Lawrenceville years gives her veteran status. The airy space shows a diverse range of artists who dabble in everything from realism and abstraction to ceramics and multimedia. Yet they’re all connected by one common thread: every artist is from the tristate area. I live on this beautiful little street that’s lined with trees and has a community garden at the end of it. It’s a quiet street, but it’s still close to everything, from parks to restaurants and libraries. My husband and I chose Lawrenceville because there are a lot of artists living here – a community of creative and likeminded people who support each other. I grew up in central Pennsylvania but was always a huge Pittsburgh sports fan. I knew I wanted to end up here. A lot of neighbourhood people come into Roundabout, so I get to know familiar faces. There’s also the weekend brewery-hoppers and the locals who have lived here their entire lives. It’s an interesting mix. I’m a real-estate developer and the founder of Toronto-based Mizrahi Developments. We specialize in mixed-use residential and commercial high-rises in Toronto, Ottawa and elsewhere in Canada. The project we’re probably best known for is our planned building at 1 Bloor Street West, called The One. When it opens in downtown Toronto in 2020, the 80-storey development will be the tallest building in Canada. I have over 20 years of experience working in real estate, but since 2007 my focus lies in the high-end custom home building industry. Almost 10 years ago, this market was completely underserved in Canada. Back then, the world of condominiums was one that only allowed a low level of customization – the only liberty that was given to customers was the choice among three or four available plans within a set scheme. We stepped out of this and gave the homeowner the magic wand to custom-design their space to respond to their desires. Our secret lies in listening to our customers and knowing no limits. For the retail component of our developments, we follow the same philosophy, allowing retailers to have uncontaminated shop space. At 1 Bloor, the building has no columns and pillars that could detract from the flow of the space. Instead, we give retailers clear spans and ceiling heights – vast open spaces that let them create the customer experience they are looking for. The One, designed by British architect Norman Foster, is a prime example of uncontaminated space. When we started working on the project, we were looking for architects both locally and internationally who could turn our vision into reality. We chose Foster and Partners because they are paramount in extra-skeleton architecture where there’s no limit within the space – both for retailers and homeowners. No other architect encompasses this structural engineering method the way Foster does without compromising on the “wow factor” of the development. The One is a groundbreaking building not just for Toronto but for all of Canada. It is going to put the city and the country on the map in terms of architectural relevance and importance. Besides being the tallest, it is also one of the first superstructures to go up in Canada that is over 300 metres high. We always aim for timelessness, for creating something that’s as relevant today as it will be in 50 or 100 years from now – or as it would have been 50 years ago.

Le projet pour lequel je suis connu est sans doute celui du 1 Bloor Street West, aussi appelé The One. À son inauguration en 2020 à Toronto, cet immeuble de 80 étages sera le plus haut au pays. Je compte plus de 20 ans d’expérience dans l’immobilier, mais depuis 2007, je me concentre sur le secteur de l’immobilier haut de gamme sur mesure. Il y a seulement dix ans, ce marché était totalement sous-développé au Canada. À l’époque, l’univers des condos ne permettait qu’un degré minime de personnalisation – le client n’avait le choix qu’entre trois ou quatre configurations soumises à un cahier des charges strict. En nous éloignant de cela, nous avons donné une baguette magique au client pour lui permettre d’imaginer l’espace de ses rêves.

To me, the biggest satisfaction is walking by a site after it’s been completed and seeing how it has been integrated into the fabric of the community. En lançant le projet, nous avons cherché des architectes locaux et internationaux susceptibles de donner corps à notre vision. Nous avons choisi Foster and Partners pour leur expertise en architecture à ossature, qui n’impose pas de limites à l’espace interne – ni pour les commerces, ni pour les logements. Aucun cabinet d’architectes ne sait mieux maîtriser cette méthode d’ingénierie structurelle que Foster sans compromettre l’esthétique grandiose d’un projet. The One est une réalisation d’avant-garde pour Toronto et pour tout le Canada. Il va mettre au premier plan la pertinence et le profil architecturaux de la ville et du pays. Non seulement ce sera le plus haut bâtiment au Canada, mais ce sera aussi l’une des premières superstructures à dépasser les 300 mètres. Nous visons toujours un caractère intemporel en créant quelque chose qui sera aussi pertinent dans 50 ou 100 ans qu’il l’est aujourd’hui – ou qu’il l’aurait été il y a 50 ans. Ajouter de la valeur à la communauté est au cœur de tout ce que j’entreprends. Ma plus grande satisfaction est de me promener autour d’un site achevé pour constater comment il a été intégré dans le tissu de la société. Pour nous, le facteur de succès n’est pas un bâtiment achevé, mais de voir la joie de nos clients quand ils emménagent dans leur nouvel appartement. L’achat d’un logement constitue l’un des plus gros et des plus importants investissements financiers de la vie. J’éprouve une grande joie quand nous jouons notre rôle qui est de fournir des espaces dépassant toutes les attentes. A Mine of Its Own Timmins and mining go hand in hand. Yet sitting on top of the city’s precious bed of rock is a place of nature, culture and so much more. Timmins rime depuis longtemps avec mine. The first thing you notice on the flight to Timmins is the number of passengers speaking French. No, you’re not on the wrong flight; you’re heading to one of the biggest francophone centres in Ontario. Its population is between 40 and 45 percent French, but Timmins is also a great multicultural city, and a large number of First Nations people call it home as well. As the plane approaches Timmins, the view out the window is of the expanse of northern forest punctuated by mining operations, the reason for the city’s very existence. A mix of town and country, Timmins is an industrial, cosmopolitan city with easy access to the northern Ontario wilderness. Upon landing in Timmins, head to the Hersey Lake Conservation Area, a 15-minute drive from the airport, where the calm of the jack pine forest is an instant elixir to whatever big-city stresses you may have packed in your bag. If the weather is warm, take a dip in Hersey Lake, the centrepiece of the 560-acre park, but a hike on the wellmarked trails is essential. Go for a short 20-minute loop around the lake, or a longer, meandering exploration deeper into the park, complete with scenic lookouts and benches carved out of fallen tree trunks. Signs warn you to be mindful of bears, as sightings up here are common, but you’re more likely to meet up with a standard poodle and its owner on the trails, as this is a favourite haunt of Timmins residents. Hersey Lake trails connect to the Timmins Recreation Trail Network, 45 kilometres of non-motorized trails that wind into, through and around the entire community, so it’s best to arrive with a love of the outdoors. An interest in industrial history will also be satisfied in this city founded in 1912 by Noah Timmins, a mining entrepreneur who capitalized on the northern Ontario gold rush. The three big mining operations of the day, Hollinger, McIntyre and Big Dome mines, are names that still resonate today, and numerous Hollinger signs have electronic clocks that warn residents when the next blasts will occur at the mine in sight of downtown. To get a handle on the city’s history, stop by the Timmins Museum. Recently moved into a new downtown building, the museum contains 50,000 artifacts and more than 21,000 photographs of northern Ontario, making it the biggest collection 18

La première chose que l’on remarque dans l’avion pour Timmins, c’est le nombre de passagers qui parlent français. Vous ne vous êtes pas trompé de vol, vous arrivez juste dans un des plus grands centres francophones de l’Ontario. Si sa population est à 40-45% française, Timmins est aussi une ville multiculturelle et elle compte un bon nombre de représentants des Premières nations. Lorsque l’avion fait son approche, par le hublot on peut apercevoir une vaste forêt boréale, ponctuée d’exploitations minières, la raison même de sa fondation. Mélange de ville et de campagne, Timmins est un centre industriel cosmopolite qui offre également une porte d’entrée sur les grands espaces du nord de l’Ontario. En arrivant à Timmins, mettez le cap sur la zone de conservation du lac Hersey, à 15 minutes de voiture de l’aéroport. La tranquillité de la forêt de pins gris est un élixir puissant contre le stress des grandes villes. Si le temps est chaud, baignezvous dans le lac Hersey, au centre d’un parc de 226 hectares, mais il ne faut pas manquer les nombreux chemins de randonnée bien balisés. Faites une petite boucle de 20 minutes autour du lac ou partez à l’aventure dans le parc qui offre de nombreux panoramas et des bancs taillés dans des troncs d’arbres. Des panneaux incitent à faire attention aux ours, qui ne sont pas rares, mais vous avez plus de chances de rencontrer un caniche et son maître car les résidents adorent se promener en ces lieux. La piste du lac Hersey est reliée au réseau de chemins de randonnée de Timmins, 45 kilomètres de pistes sans voitures qui parcourent tout le voisinage, une aubaine pour tous les amoureux des grands espaces. Les passionnés d’histoire industrielle ne sont pas en reste dans cette ville fondée en 1912 par Noah Timmins, un entrepreneur qui sut profiter de la ruée vers l’or du Nord ontarien. found between southern Ontario and Manitoba and an important interpretation centre for northern Ontario. “The labour history here is phenomenal,” says Karen Bachmann, director and curator of the museum. “There were the strikes in 1912, the multicultural population that came here to work – Timmins has been diverse since the beginning.” She is particularly excited about a new birch bark canoe built last year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of French presence in Ontario, which will join the museum’s First Nations dugout canoe that dates to the 14th century. As you head out, stop by the Hollinger House in front of the museum, a vintage example of the 1930s prefabricated tarpaper houses provided by Hollinger to its miners. Two blocks from the museum is the Pine Dairy Bar, an old-school diner

Stop by for lunch, when diner fare comes in redcheckered waxed paper baskets and, true to its name, ice cream and shakes can be had. Make downtown Timmins your temporary home by checking into the rather unique Balsam Suites Boutique Inn & Residence. “We like to say we’ve got the charm of a bed and breakfast but with the amenities of a hotel,” says Syd Brooks, who runs the family operation with his wife, Lyn, and their daughter, Alisa. Located in a former bowling alley that the family has owned since the early 1980s, the hotel was renovated by the Brooks and opened in 2014. It’s a homey place, with shelves full of books in the lounge area and a 24-hour kitchen with complimentary snacks. Syd is also a lawyer and runs his practice out of an office behind the front desk when not attend-

For a decade the Brooks family ran a beloved Timmins dessert restaurant in what is now the breakfast room of the hotel, and decorative dessert-themed caricature sculptures of the entire family made by Alisa, an artist, still adorn the walls. Opting for the more humane pace of inn-keeping rather than that of the restaurant business, Lyn says, “We’ve always been big on hospitality, and I still love to cook and bake.” In the morning she’ll make breakfast to order for guests; an omelette with waffles fresh from the iron, or a selection of cereals and toast. The Brooks are generous with their Timmins knowledge, so chat with them over breakfast, and be sure to ask Syd to tell you the story about how he missed out on backing Shania Twain in the early days of her career when she performed at the bar across the street.

For a dinner with a historic twist, walk over to the Porcupine Dante Club. Established in 1938 as the Sons of Italy, the organization was what today would be called an immigrant settlement agency, helping Italian men who came to Timmins for work find their way by assisting with English-language skills and paperwork. In the 1950s, it evolved into a social club with a banquet hall and indoor bocce court. Today, locals, Italian or otherwise, will tell you to eat dinner at its restaurant, open Wednesday through Friday, for what some say is the best Italian meal you’ll ever eat. In the morning, before or after breakfast, make you way to Gillies Lake on the northeast side of downtown and walk or jog the promenade circling the water. With quacking ducks, morning mist, and the landscape reflecting in the still water, it may seem as though the lake was always like this, but as the plaques along the path describe, just a couple of decades ago it was very polluted. A heroic restoration and naturalization project, however, has brought wildlife back, and there’s even a place to swim on the northwest side. After your morning constitutional around the lake, stop at the Coffee Warehouse for a gourmet brew and one of the freshly baked goods made just hours earlier, or give the rest of your 22

day a boost with a high-octane fruit or vegetable smoothie made in front of you. Now you’re ready to explore more Timmins heritage and culture, and there are a few destinations within walking distance of here, such as La Ronde. Established in 1968, it’s the Franco-Ontarian heart of Timmins, with more than 2,000 members and a building that hosts a full list of programs and events. “Francophones who are proud of their roots keep it alive,” explains Daniel Ouellet, the centre’s director. Events open to the public include 15-20 concerts a year in the big hall, locally produced and written plays, and a storefront gallery that features a different local artist’s work monthly. On the south side of downtown, the Timmins Native Friendship Centre serves First Nations communities in the city and the entire northern region of Ontario, all the way to the James Bay and Hudson Bay coasts. “It started from a briefcase in 1972, and that grew into this building,” says Veronica Nicholson, executive director of the former school in which the centre is housed. “We serve the full cycle of life.” True to its name, the friendship centre invites the public to visit the weekly drumming events to experience some of the rich First Nations culture in and around Timmins. Across from the Balsam Suites is Relics, two floors of vintage clothing, jewellery, retro bits and bobs, and antiques collected by the store’s owner, Jackie MacNeil, on her many buying trips around Canada and Europe. Open for 10 years, Relics has a collection of unique Timmins items, like old tourist mementoes and hat boxes from long-gone shops. When you’re ready to eat, walk downhill to Osaka Sushi, an all-you-can-eat restaurant with more than 150 menu items. It’s housed in a former cinema building that has become a local institution in its own right and is reflective of the continued evolution of the multiculturalism in Timmins. Before you leave town, be sure to stop by the McIntyre Community Building, located east of downtown. Constructed in 1938, the recreation centre is a great example of an old-style Canadian hockey arena and has deep Toronto Maple Leafs roots, too: it was built by J. P. Bickell, a mine executive who was also part owner of the Leafs during the legendary Conn Smythe era. Have a bite in the historic coffee shop that could be a movie set.

Timmins – stop the presses – could be the next big thing on the microbrewery map. With two new craft breweries set to open in the coming months, local beer lovers have a lot to feel hoptimistic about. Opening in early 2017 with a dry stout, pale ale and Belgian grisette in the barrels, Compass will explore new fermenting frontiers and redefine Canadian beer as we know it. Launching this fall under the helm of Jonathan St-Pierre and Ryan Farrell, Full Beard is a proudly grassroots startup, relying on local suppliers and purchasing its hops from nearby farms. The name comes from master brewer Jonathan’s all-embracing facial bush. Fortune, after all, favours the beard. Jonathan St-Pierre et Ryan Farrell ont prévu démarrer à l’automne leur entreprise qui s’approvisionnera chez des fournisseurs et fermiers locaux. As its name suggests, this establishment has multiple identities. It’s a bakery-coffee shop by day, serving coffees, bagels and brownies, and a wine bar by night, offering small plates like brioche with chanterelles, figs and walnut ricotta, or larger offerings like duck cassoulet. But if the menu is Frenchinspired, the stripped-back interior has a distinct Scandi vibe, right down to the walls that look like they’ve been ravaged by a bunch of urban renards. An instant classic – and that’s no tommy-foolery. Handsomely housed in a once-ruined 19th-century bank building, Tender offers a bar-side classic menu, from charcuterie to a rib-eye sandwich. The real draws, however, are the atmosphere – from the corner pasted with found cheques from the 1800s to the library shelves and rolling ladder behind the bar – and the expertly made craft cocktails, including the Pecora Investigation, a combination of smoky Scotch and aged sherry, which, appropriately, tastes like old money. Sault’s first craft brewery produces around 36 kegs of straight-from-theshoulder, if not forthright, brews a month. Hops and Dreams Boston Raven A dark, Gothic concoction, fresh from the cauldron, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, one of Boston’s most revered residents, and his poem “The Raven.” In that composition, the “ebony bird” flies in through a window with “a grave and stern decorum” and proceeds to torment the poem’s protagonist by crying “Nevermore” – something you certainly won’t be saying when offered another flagon. Pittsburgh Andy’s Amber Brew As distinctive and desirable as a Marilyn Monroe silkscreen, this tribute to one of Pittsburgh’s most famous sons – call it a Warhol whistle-wetter – will put extra pop into anyone’s art. To complement the Warhol credo, it should probably taste of money (“Good business is the best art”) and glamour (“Everyone’s plastic, but I love plastic”). Ideal drinking time? Fifteen minutes, of course. Québec City Raspberry Beret The inspiration for this brew is threefold: firstly, the famous red-fruit bounty harvested on the farms of the Île d’Orléans, only three miles east of Québec City, in the St. Lawrence River; secondly, the headgear beloved of some francophones; and finally, of course, the genius of the late Prince himself. Add purple sage leaves, or purple fig slices, in further homage. Windsor Gas Guzzler The name is an affectionate nod to Windsor’s position as Canada’s very own Motor City, with its array of auto plants. Any revved-up burnt-rubber accents are kept to a minimum, in favour of a floral bouquet (reflecting its nickname as the City of Roses) with an added kick: after all, Windsor boasts the country’s highest annual number of lightning strikes. Our department responds to posttravel concerns or comments that are usually sent through the Porter website by our customers. We’ll deal with anything from concerns to compliments to queries to all manner of suggestions – for example, that we might think about changing the types of cookies we offer. My role is to supervise the team that deals with those issues, ensure that we bring any trending issues up with the relevant department and, eventually, resolve all those that are brought to our attention.

There are four coordinators in our team. I can assure you that we read and respond to every single case that comes to us. I can also assure you that our response to you is a real one, investigated for you. Email is the first point of contact for us, from the feedback form on the Porter website. We follow up with phone calls where it’s warranted. Sometimes people just want to communicate a point of view, and you take their feedback into account, and that might lead to a future change in policy or procedure. We let the right people know about these things.

The biggest issue we deal with? Changes in schedule. That accounts for 35 to 40 percent of our workload. Baggage and reservation feedback are also hot topics, as is customer service. Porter sets itself extremely high standards – there was a poll this past March where we scored the highest customer satisfaction rate of any Canadian airline – so it’s important to know when we fall short, and which areas we can improve. We also get compliments every day, and they’re usually all about an employee who goes “above and beyond” in order to enhance a customer’s experience. The qualities you need to do my job? Patience is number one. Also the desire to help people, to make their experience with Porter a positive one. And also, good management skills. Teamwork is key for us; we’re pretty close-knit, we rely on each other, and we 48

also need to have good relationships with other departments in Porter to help us with our work. Language skills are also good; we’re giving a lot of our responses in writing, so you need to be able to explain things clearly and concisely. The weirdest issue that we’ve dealt with? I’ve been doing the job for five years now, and nothing much fazes me, but there was an instance where we had a complaint from a passenger on a flight where a cat that was being carried in the cabin had somehow got out of its cage and had, well, let’s just say it had left some deposits in the cabin. But we received more compliments about the way the flight attendant speedily cleaned things up! I started with Porter as a bilingual call-centre agent. I studied fine arts at Queens University, in Kingston, Ontario, so in a way I’ve been totally sidetracked. I taught English in Québec for a while but chose a job at Porter over a place at a teachers’ college. And I’ve never looked back. We keep growing at Porter, and I feel so needed here. I work with so many different departments, and I’ve met so many people, and I don’t think I would have had those opportunities in any other job. I’ve learned with this job that leadership is something I gravitate towards. Whether that’s in customer service or working at the airport, it’s something I’d like to pursue in the future.

La question la plus bizarre que j’aie eu à traiter ? Je suis à mon poste depuis cinq ans, alors il en faut beaucoup pour me surprendre, mais il y a un cas où un passager s’est plaint après un vol où un chat, qui était dans la cabine, s’est échappé de sa cage et a laissé, disons, de petits cadeaux dans la cabine. Mais nous avons reçu davantage de compliments de la part de passagers sur la manière et la promptitude avec laquelle le personnel de bord a nettoyé! J’ai commencé chez Porter en tant qu’agent bilingue du centre d’appels. J’ai étudié les beaux arts à l’Université de Queens, à Kingston en Ontario. D’une certaine manière, je me suis perdue en route. J’ai enseigné l’anglais à Québec pendant un temps, mais j’ai choisi Porter au lieu d’un poste dans un collège pour enseignants. Je ne l’ai jamais regretté. L’entreprise poursuit sa croissance et on a besoin de moi. Je collabore avec tant de services et j’ai rencontré tant de gens. Je ne crois pas que j’aurais eu autant d’opportunités dans un autre emploi. J’ai appris que j’avais un excellent leadership. Que ce soit au service à la clientèle ou à l’aéroport, j’aimerais poursuivre dans cette voie. Ma vie en dehors du travail ? J’adore le cinéma, donc je suis bénévole pour des festivals de cinéma à Toronto, ainsi je fais des rencontres dans la communauté. My life outside work? I love movies so I volunteer for film festivals in Toronto, with the bonus that I get out into the community and meet new people. I switch off by travelling – going on a Porter flight anywhere is super exciting. It reminds me that this is a great industry to be a part of. The best words we can hear in our office? I think I heard them last week, actually – something along the lines of: There was a problem, but you guys totally recovered my experience, and I will definitely be flying with you again.
