Jazz Town Shaw, in northwestern DC, has plenty of stories to tell – a neighbourhood that once buzzed with famous jazz clubs and witnessed the riots that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Today, however, Shaw is assuming a new identity without forgetting its roots. Au nord-ouest de DC, Shaw ne manque pas d’histoire. Shaw’s storied history is as flavourful as the dozen of Ethiopian restaurants now nestled there. It’s where Duke Ellington learned to play jazz and where Langston Hughes, a leader of the Harlem Renaissance, wrote poetry. And long before the neighbourhood’s main route, the U Street corridor (“Black Broadway”), buzzed with jazz salons, Shaw was where freed slaves settled during the Civil War. (The area is named after war commander Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw.) Ruined by riots that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., in 1968, Shaw has been slowly rebuilding itself over the past decade. Once-sketchy alleys bustle with boutiques and coffee shops and empty lots are being converted into condos. But with the new, the old remains. The colourful Victorian row houses are occupied by young families, the flower shop from 1969 is still open and Ben’s Chili Bowl still serves its famous chili dogs. In DC, cocktails are synonymous with Derek Brown, a mixologist who has opened a trifecta of bars along Seventh Street, turning the once sketchy strip into a pub crawler’s dream. Start at Eat the Rich for inventive cocktails – which, conveniently, come in pitchers – and perfectly chilled oysters, sourced from coowner Travis Croxton’s farm in Topping, Virginia. The tables are communal, the lighting is nil and the music is loud (naturally, considering the bar was named after a Motörhead song). À DC, cocktails et Derek Brown sont synonymes. Historically, DC has always been a meat-and-potatoes kind of town, where old boys’ club steak houses reign supreme. But a revolution in the city is under way, with restaurants like Table, located in a former taxi repair shop, leading the rebellion. Chef Frederik de Pue serves up seasonal, French-inspired fare, like lobster ragout with bisque sauce and mushroom tarts with chestnut purée. Opt for a seat on the main floor and watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. At this pub, Capitol Hill types saddle up next to college students and beer aficionados talking fermentation techniques – an apt snapshot of Shaw’s eclectic population. Along with a bevy of bottles, Right Proper’s own 10 craft beers – distilled on-site – share taps with guest breweries. Need a cheat sheet? Try the Ornette, a sprite wheat ale, and the Wild Harvest, a farmhouse cream saison. A neighbourhood institution, Ben’s Chili Bowl counts President Barack Obama as a customer and Bill Cosby as a regular, even naming its iconic half-smoke chili dog after him. Inside, the walls are plastered with photos of other A-listers who have trekked to Ben’s for its legendary grub (everyone from Larry King and Hillary Clinton to Chris Rock and Wolfgang Puck makes an appearance). The iconic yellow and red signage from 1958 remains untouched. With GoodWood, owner Anna Kahoe reinvents the typical mercantile dry goods store with her incredible eye for finding one-of-a-kind vintage items that range from the wacky (horse gambling roulette-style wheel) to the classic (mid-century mod teak consoles). New items like women’s dresses and clogs, Rifle Paper Co. stationery and perfume imported from France fill out the selection. Kahoe describes her design POV as “Spanish Catholic mother meets Maryland fisherman.” No need to dissect what that means; walk through her world and see for yourself. Browsing through the goodies here is like peeking into the pantry of your hippest friend who throws the best dinner parties. Lining the towering wooden shelves – complete with a rolling ladder – are fresh dried pasta, chutneys, curry sauces, jams and vinegars, many of which are made on-site in Seasonal Pantry’s minuscule kitchen. At night the store’s butcher-block counter is transformed into a communal dining table for a 12-seater supper club. Don’t be fooled by the boring facade. Long before the riots of 1968 destroyed much of the U Street corridor, Shaw’s main entertainment artery was known as Washington’s “Black Broadway.” The Lincoln Theatre (built in 1922) served as the epicentre of nightlife, where legendaries like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday graced the stage. After closing for several decades, the theatre was restored and reopened in 1994. Nowadays, the performances skew toward rock ’n’ roll, indie and irreverent comedy. African American Civil War Museum

During the Civil War, freed slaves escaped to DC and set up encampments on the town’s outskirts, now modern-day Shaw. This museum honours the history of African Americans during the war via a winding exhibition that takes visitors from the formation of the United States Colored Troops to the abolishment of slavery, the civil rights movement and the inauguration of Obama. After the riots, this place was burned down. A lot of people moved out, and it was dead for a while. Then Shaw started to gentrify, and the people came back. I like the diversity here. You might have a heavy-metal bar next to a jazz bar next to an Ethiopian club. Après les émeutes tout avait brûlé, les gens sont partis. Puis, Shaw s’est embourgeoisé et ils sont revenus. I moved here two years ago to work on Obama’s re-election campaign. DC has always felt like a transient city, where you stay for two years, working a government or non-profit contract, and then you leave. Shaw, however, feels like a real neighbourhood. I’ve lived all over DC, and unlike Georgetown or Adams Morgan, Shaw has a real community aspect to it. A lot of my neighbours have lived in Shaw for their whole lives. It’s changing at a steady pace, but it’s not completely overrun by the yuppie, hipster crowd yet. J’ai habité partout à DC et, à l’inverse de Georgetown ou d’Adams Morgan, Shaw est une vraie communauté. Mes voisins sont là depuis toujours. Ça change à un rythme constant mais les yuppies tendance n’ont pas encore tout colonisé.

Speakers’ Corner The Economic Club of Canada is a non-profit speakers’ forum for policy-makers and business leaders to make major keynote addresses. Here we talk to Rhiannon Traill, who, after founding her first business at the age of 10, went on to be appointed president and CEO of the organization before the age of 30. Le Club économique du Canada est un forum sans but lucratif qui sert de tribune aux décideurs politiques et économiques. Nous nous entretenons avec Rhiannon Traill qui a fondé sa première entreprise à l’age de 10 ans. Aujourd’hui, à moins de 30 ans, elle vient d’être nommée PDG de cette organisation.

I majored in arts and contemporary studies at Ryerson University, Toronto, and was three weeks away from final exams when I spoke on a school panel about public policy issues in the city. One of the board members of what was then the Economic Club of Toronto happened to be listening, and he came up to me afterwards and asked if I’d be interested in a job there. A week later, I had a meeting with the president, Mark Adler, and soon after that deferred my master’s degree and joined the organization. We hosted the former president of the United States Bill Clinton as a speaker on my very first day. I remember feeling awe, excitement, that this was something I really wanted to be a part of.

Je faisais des études d’art et d’études contemporaines à l’Université de Ryerson, à Toronto, quand à trois jours des examens, j’ai pris part à un débat sur les questions de politique publique de la ville. Or, un membre du conseil d’administration de ce qui était à l’époque le Club économique de Toronto écoutait la discussion et après, il m’a demandé si je serais intéressée à travailler au Club. Une semaine plus tard, j’ai rencontré le président, Mark Adler et, peu après, j’ai différé ma maîtrise pour entrer dans cette organisation. À mon premier jour, nous avons accueilli l’exprésident Bill Clinton. J’étais impressionnée et excitée car c’était exactement l’idée que je me faisais de cette institution.

I’ve always been an entrepreneurial person, someone who was willing to take a risk. I started my first business, dog walking and training, at the age of 10! After a few months at the Economic Club, I approached the president to share some ideas. I told him I loved the organization, all it stood for, but that I had some notions of how to further it. I suggested we rebrand to become the Economic Club of Canada, that we should become truly national. And, luckily, instead of laughing me out of his office, he listened. In a short time I was made vice-president, and then, when Mark Adler was elected to Parliament in May 2011, I was asked to replace him as president and CEO. I was 28 years old and had just had my first child, so had to hit the ground running.

J’ai toujours eu l’âme d’une entrepreneure, de quelqu’un qui est prête à prendre des risques. J’ai créé ma première entreprise de promenade et de dressage de chiens, à seulement 10 ans! Après quelques mois au Club économique, j’ai parlé au président. Je lui ai dit que j’adorais l’institution et ses principes mais que j’avais des idées pour l’améliorer. J’ai suggéré de la rebaptiser Club économique du Canada et que nous devrions agir sur le plan national. Heureusement, au lieu de me rire au nez, il m’a écoutée. I was particularly enthralled by Ted Rogers, a great business thinker and pioneer, who reinvented the telecommunications industry in Canada. Although the most exciting day for me recently was when we co-hosted French President François Hollande and Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada. It wasn’t just thrilling because of who was speaking on the stage. Practically every cabinet minister in Canada was in the audience! Who would I most like the club to host, who it hasn’t yet? Probably President Barack Obama or Christine Lagarde, MD of the International Monetary Fund.

One of my strongest beliefs is that we need to invest in future generations, that a financially well-informed youth is critical for a strong, stable future economy. I founded the Jr. Economic Club of Canada as a means of helping young people become more financially literate. My biggest piece of advice to ambitious young people? Forget about cracking the stock market for a minute and learn how to be a regular saver. Ours is a consumer culture in which many people believe that in order to be successful you have to look successful, that it’s necessary to constantly spend on new clothes, cars, accessories. But true success isn’t about instant gratification. We try and run an organization that’s not exclusionary. I want all Canadians to be able to come in and be part of the discourse that we’re creating. And that’s why we invite not only club members to the talks but anyone from the general public. Tickets can be purchased online. We’re not trying to push any specific agenda; we’re trying to facilitate a sharing of ideas. Who’s to say who should be in the room and who shouldn’t? Who’s to say one idea is better than another? Anyone who has a desire to attend can attend. Since joining the Economic Club of Canada, I’ve helped expand its reach beyond Toronto. Every year, we host over 150 speakers’ events across Canada – be it Vancouver, Halifax or Montréal. I opened operations in Ottawa when I took over as president, and we’ve recently opened another office in Calgary, so as you can imagine, I’m often flying between places on Porter. I think Porter has put the fun and pleasure back in flying, and – while my dream is to have an office in every province across Canada – I’m relying on the airline to transport me. When I’m not working, I enjoy running, singing, songwriting and spending as much time as possible with my three-year-old son. I have an incredible husband who is my rock in every way. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, and that really altered my perspective on work, on life. It taught me how to be still, to appreciate the here and now •

Mais le vrai succès n’est pas synonyme de gratification immédiate. Nous tentons de gérer une organisation qui ne soit pas exclusive. Je veux que tout Canadien puisse prendre part aux discussions que nous lançons. C’est la raison pour laquelle j’invite non seulement les membres du Club aux conférences, mais aussi le grand public. On the Ontario campus of Ontario’s newest university, the dustier trademarks of Canadian academia appear to have been dispensed with. In place of age-old buildings clad in limestone, there are loft-like work and study spaces carved into the shell of a repurposed printing press; instead of a gargantuan library, there’s a cutting-edge cache of 550,000 e-books and 75,000 e-journals. Whereas students of a more traditional institution might tote books and endure drafty hallways, attendees of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology work solely via wireless laptops and are able to pass through jungle-like humidity, wind, rain, snow and sleet and into blistering equatorial heat simply by going from room to room in one particular educational suite. And for a more colourful experience, there’s the old farmhouseturned-classroom. It’s tucked into a corner of the Oshawa campus that was once home to a historic thoroughbred stud farm, and on most days it is transformed into a virtual crime scene, its rooms spattered with blood and bodily fluids, and riddled with bullet holes. It doesn’t take long to sense that there is no ivory tower here. Established by provincial legislation in 2002, UOIT became the first university to receive public funding in Ontario in 40 years. Backed by Jim Flaherty, Ontario’s finance minister at the time, representing the nearby Whitby-Ajax riding, UOIT was instituted with a specific mandate to contribute to the economy and the community that surrounds it by offering career-relevant programs and turning out career-ready graduates. That “special mission,” as Tim McTiernan, the university’s president and vice-chancellor, calls it, has become “the heart and soul of the place” as it prepares to enter its second decade. “The concept of the university in terms of focus and operation was to push the edge,” McTiernan says, “and to provide opportunities directly for our graduates.” He adds, “Built into the DNA of our organization is the sense that we’re a start-up. We’re young. We’re dynamic. When you think of the professors and staff who came to this university and built it from the ground up over the last 10 years, they were people who were willing to take a risk on a new institution.” That risk is showing signs that it will pay off. The fifth and easternmost university in the Greater Toronto Area, UOIT now boasts more than 10,000 students – a sizable increase over the class of 900 that signed on for its first year of operation.

Of those, about 500 are in the midst of postgraduate degrees. The school offers more than 70 academic programs, including 30 at the master’s and doctoral levels, spread across seven faculties. Programs range from forensic science to game development/entrepreneurship and automotive engineering. Staff currently number nearly 1,500 and counting – the university holds the title as the fastest growing in Canada. Its modern approach to academia is also unique. While the university does boast six Canada Research Chairs, it lacks the depth of a traditional tenured faculty. To make up for it, UOIT’s architects have gone to great lengths to establish connections not just with nearby Durham College (which feeds UOIT about 30 percent of its incoming undergraduates each year through Pathways programs) and Trent University, which has a satellite campus in Oshawa, but with post-secondary institutions as far abroad as China, Italy and Australia in order to help UOIT researchers maintain strong academic networks. “We are a research organization that is small but mighty,” says McTiernan. “We’re practical in our research focus, while we’re rigorous about the fundamentals of the discipline.” He adds, “What we offer is not a community of colleagues that you can join in an academic point of view, but the opportunity to be nimble, the opportunity to do things differently – and the opportunity to innovate without having the baggage of history to worry about. “We have a lot of people working with us who’ve worked in large organizations, who’ve come here not necessarily because the pay is better but because there are more degrees of freedom. As a young, pre-tenured prof in a large organization, it’s sometimes hard to find your place. It’s easier to find your place here because it’s less crowded.” The focus on innovation infuses UOIT and energizes its staff. One effort, a collaboration between the faculties of Business and Information Technology and Health Sciences and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), involves the development of algorithms that would pick up symptoms of dis-

tress in high-risk premature babies well before the symptoms become apparent via clinical observation; application of the technology has a wide array of implications, from providing health care in rural settings without hospitals to providing it to astronauts in space. Among the university’s most touted assets is the Automotive Centre of Excellence. Funded with the help of General Motors of Canada, the $100 million facility has at its core one of the largest and most sophisticated climatic wind tunnels in the world. Operating as an independent test facility (manufacturers of many descriptions can rent it out), the tunnel “blows your mind every time you see it,” McTiernan says. In just seconds, temperatures in the tunnel can go from -40 degrees C to +60 degrees C. The university has also received attention for its Crime Scene House, which anchors its forensic science program, one of only two in Canada that have received accreditation by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Inside the house and around its grounds, students can hone their investigative skills by working over mock cases of homicide, breaking and entering, shootings, hit-and-run incidents and suspicious deaths with the latest technological tools used in the industry. Meanwhile, students in the multi-million-dollar clean energy lab are splitting water molecules to produce hydrogen as they explore clean energy solutions for power grids and automobiles; they’re also partnering with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. In UOIT’s Nuclear Simulation Laboratory, students receive instruction on a virtual Candu 9 reactor simulator, Ontario Power Generation’s only off-site, full-scope simulator. Many students, McTiernan says, find themselves with job offers from local industry partners before they even graduate. It’s an example of how UOIT is accomplishing what it was designed to do. The challenge now is to keep growing and to hit the 20,000-student benchmark. “Our next step is to increase our brand profile nationally,” McTiernan says •

Winter can go one of two ways: either you hibernate inside and wait for spring, grizzly bearstyle, or you embrace the frigid temperatures, biting winds and inevitable hat head and experience the rush of the season by partaking in any number of extreme cold-weather sports. After all, if there’s a surefire way to beat the winter chill – not to mention those winter blues – it’s to get moving. Science tells us that anything that sparks a bit of fear or uncertainty is healthy. Adventure sports – often called adrenalin sports – help the body release endorphins, dopamine and norepinephrine, which together can help ease pain, boost mood and help you think, perform and sleep better. The more fearful a sport makes you, the greater the release of these chemicals – and the greater the addiction-like symptoms. This is where the term “adrenalin junkie” comes into play. For years the French-Canadian town of Mont Tremblant has been a winter destination for celebrities and thrill-seekers alike, drawn in by its rustic Canadian charm and old-world feel. Modelled after Swiss Alpine towns, the mountain’s base village offers everything a visitor might need within easy walking distance: a warm bed, cold beer and hot poutine; and plenty of cozy fires tucked inside candy-coloured buildings that are reminiscent of a movie set or something Walt Disney might have dreamt up. But Mont Tremblant gets very real when it comes to sports that’ll get the blood pumping. Don’t let the town’s cute facade fool you: adrenalin is taken very seriously around these parts. Mont Tremblant’s name does, after all, mean “trembling mountain,” and its 628 acres of slopes include 95 trails and three snow parks. The skiing here is prime; the nearly mile-high mountain is consistently rated a top resort in the East by readers of Ski magazine – with trails that vary from wide and winding to fairly treacherous – and snowfall reaches an average of 3.8 metres (12.5 feet) per year. Other ways to catch a fix include zip lining, snowboarding, dogsledding,

Mais Mont Tremblant est bien réel en matière de sports enivrants. Ne vous laissez pas tromper par son apparence charmante : on y prend l’adrénaline au sérieux. Le nom de Mont Tremblant évoque d’ailleurs le frisson et ses 255 hectares comptent 95 pistes et trois parcs acrobatiques. Le domaine skiable est incomparable ; avec un sommet atteignant près de mille mètres, elle est régulièrement classée parmi les meilleures stations de l’Est par les lecteurs de Ski Magazine et elle offre des sentiers de toutes difficultés. nighttime tubing, snowshoeing and ice climbing, all of which are available through the Mont Tremblant Activity Centre. First up: the lay of the land. There are a few ways to achieve this, the most exciting of which comes on the back of a snowmobile or on a dog-drawn sled. Depending on your level of experience – and adrenalin lust – you can opt for an instructorled or self-guided snowmobile jaunt across the mountain’s thousands of marked, groomed trails, which travel up and down hills, along old train tracks and around the majestic Lake Tremblant. Or see the mountain by dog: a team of huskies pulls a wooden sled for one or two people through scenic, snowy trails. Expect a wildlife sighting or two, perhaps a white-tailed deer or red fox. The ride includes time prepping and harnessing the dogs and, of course, rewarding them post-ride for work well done. Then you’re ready for a ski (or, if you prefer, a ’board). With the mountain’s First Tracks program, early-bird skiers and snowboarders can catch the first untouched runs an hour before Tremblant opens to anyone else. The mountain is made up of four parts: the north (Versant Nord), south (Versant Sud) and sunny (Soleil) sides, and the Edge, the steepest of the four, and often the coldest and iciest as well. Here, there are a handful of fairly treacherous double black diamonds, which challenge expert skiers with steepness, moguls and obstacles – or all three – as well as 15 runs crafted especially for off-piste glade skiing, also

On the Edge, the glade trail Sensation challenges one’s concentration, and thighs, while on Versant Sud, the Kandahar trails are built for speed (beginners take note: you’ll want to avoid these). For those who like some gymnastics with their skiing or snowboarding, Mont Tremblant’s three snow parks cover a whopping 30 acres of terrain. One pass, available through Guide Services, allows access to all three parks. The standout is Adrenalin Park, on Versant Sud, which offers large and extra-large modules – rails, bumps and ramps, as well as a ski cross course – for expert freestyle skiers. The smaller Alpine Park, on Versant Nord, is the intermediatelevel park, with four progressive jumps. The family-friendly North Park, also on Versant Nord, caters to beginners and families or those interested in experimenting with in-the-

For a greater thrill, though, head off-resort to the Mont Tremblant Snow Tubing Centre, which offers eight trails, two rope tows and strategically placed bumps for an extreme version of backyard sledding. Mid-winter nights, when the temperatures are at their most frigid and the sun has sunk for the day, ensure breathtaking rapid-fire rides on trails slick with ice. For tiny thrill-seekers, the mountain offers tubing for kids as well as an evening mini-snowmobile course that runs in a circle under the lights at Tremblant’s base. Parents

can keep an eye on the family from a window seat at La Forge, a village restaurant, which handily offers views of both activities – and a winning Bloody Caesar. Off-mountain, there is much air to be caught at the resort’s zip-line course, where 40 “games” made up of suspended bridges, ladders, nets and other obstacles seemingly out to get you, or at least your sure-footedness, hover as much as 23 metres (75 feet) off the ground. A thrilling zip-line ride through the trees, at speeds of up to 80 kilometres (50 miles) per hour, is the reward for making it through a number of Survivor-style courses filled with sandbags to dodge, icy boards to balance on and ropes to swing from. You’ll be strapped in and double-clamped on, and there’s no chance of falling, though it’s still unnerving to leap from rope to rope, hoping your biceps don’t give out. They might. Especially when it’s snowing, as it often is in Tremblant. If all this sounds like cake to you, try the night course. It’s just you and your headlamp now. There’s also plenty of ice in Tremblant, making the place wellsuited to ice climbing. The resort offers multi-pitch courses for beginners through experts, with a guide-to-climber ratio of 1:4. Classes can last a few hours or a few days, depending on your interests and stamina for hurling weighty ice axes into frozen waterfalls while you are 9 metres (30 feet) in the air. Again, your biceps are key here, as are your shoulders. Promise them a soak later in your hotel’s outdoor hot tub and they may see you through. As you might expect, the best part of the day may very well be when it’s time to relax and reflect on the adventures you’ve had. Mountainside, there are plenty of options for après-ski sustenance and celebration. Microbrasserie La Diable is the place to go for the first post-ski beer and basket of fries (ask for the spicy mayo). There are a dozen devilthemed house brews on tap, all made on the premises. The fire is always roaring at the Fairmont Tremblant’s ski-in, ski-out Nansen Lounge, where the wine list is deep and the casual-chic cuisine includes comfort classics like steak tartare, a variety of tarts and an exceptional plate of nachos. Melt into a fireside couch, glass of Cabernet in hand, and wait for a visit from canine ambassador

The open kitchen produces an ever-changing menu of French bistro/Italian trattoria/American diner classics, including steak frites, pork belly with oyster mushrooms, and lamb shank with ricotta gnocchi, while desserts include a vanilla ice cream-topped brownie and salted-caramel cheesecake. The funky interior – subway tiles, industrial lamps – adds to the hipster feel, but with only 46 seats, you’d better nip to Tuck fast. Ottawa finally gets in on the ramen craze, and it’s in safe hands with chef Koichi Paxton, a veteran of ramen restaurants in southern Japan, who specializes in tonkotsu (slow-cooked pork bone broth) ramen, a staple of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. Toppings include pork belly, bamboo shoots, soft-boiled egg and shiitake mushrooms. And small plates range from yakitori shrimp or chicken wings, buttery miso-marinated black cod and the obligatory – but no less welcome – gyoza dumplings. Ottawa succombe enfin à l’engouement pour les ramen. Her responsibilities as supervisor of customer service training range from developing and implementing company policy to conducting training courses for new staff members. Magda Rewkowski est entrée chez Porter il y a huit ans et ne l’a jamais regretté. When I joined Porter in January 2007, the airline was only flying to Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal, but I knew instantly it was a world I wanted to work in. I had recently finished studying travel and tourism at Seneca College in Toronto, and one of my teachers told us about a new start-up airline. My first role was as a customer service representative, and I worked my way up. Two years later, I was promoted to lead customer service representative and then supervisor of customer service. In my current role, I assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of company policy and airport operations procedures, and develop and conduct training courses and workshops for Porter team members. I’ve found myself in so many interesting situations over the past eight years, and I try to use this exposure to design better policies. On one hand I know the customers’ habits and expectations, but I can also see situations from the perspective of the staff. I’ve worked at Porter for years, so for every member of staff I train, I have somehow, at some point, stood in their shoes. I think this makes the trainees feel more comfortable and less afraid to ask questions. One of my most memorable moments at Porter was this past Christmas. We experienced a terrible winter in Toronto, and all the staff came together to help our customers. One customer I will remember forever was this brilliant, elderly Polish lady whom I spoke with for over an hour. She needed to reach a connecting flight and was panicking but barely spoke English. I have a Polish background so called the other airline for her, acting as translator. A few weeks later she wrote me a letter to express her gratitude but simply addressed it to “Porter Airlines.” The letter found its way to me, and it was a great reward to get her home for Christmas. Je venais de terminer mes études en voyage et tourisme à Seneca College, à Toronto, et un professeur m’a parlé d’une nouvelle ligne aérienne qui débutait. Mon premier poste a été représentante au service à la clientèle et j’ai gravi les échelons. Deux ans plus tard, j’ai eu une promotion comme chef d’équipe, puis je suis devenue responsable de ce service. Dans mon rôle actuel, je participe à l’élaboration, à l’application et au respect du règlement de l’entreprise et des procédures de l’aéroport tout en animant les cours de formation pour notre équipe Porter.

En huit ans, j’ai rencontré tant de situations intéressantes. Aussi, j’essaie de tirer parti de cette expérience pour améliorer les procédures. D’un côté, je connais les habitudes et les attentes des clients, d’un autre, je considère les situations sous l’angle du personnel. Comme je suis chez Porter depuis des années, j’ai été à la place de chaque personne que je forme. Cela rassure les nouveaux venus qui ont moins peur de poser des questions.

I have two little nephews – two and five years old. They are completely obsessed with airplanes and think that I live at the airport! They believe that I can name absolutely any aircraft flying in the sky, always pointing them out and asking me what they are. If I don’t know what airplane it is, I just make it up, and sometimes they catch me out. “Aunty!” they exclaim. “That’s not what you said last time!” I love them. They’re hilarious. But they’re definitely getting too smart for this game. One of the most exciting parts of my job is the training. I love to be with a class, helping others understand the spirit of Porter and all the different types of situations they might encounter as customer service representatives. We try to make the workshops dynamic and constructive, putting skit and improvisation sessions in place, imagining different scenarios and acting them out. It’s good fun, but it’s also important to convey the gravitas of what might happen if we don’t properly read or react to a situation. I have always loved travelling. When I speak to friends who work in different industries, they are shocked and envious to learn how much I see of the world. I feel very lucky. I have been to all of Porter’s destinations except Washington DC but hope to tick that box before the end of the year. I love the outdoors, so my favourite destinations are ones where I can hike, camp or ski. I particularly love Thunder Bay and have been camping in the wilderness around there three or four times. I also love going for a run in a new city, getting some exercise, getting lost and seeing the sights by foot. My favourite part of working at Porter – and I think everyone from my department would tell you the same thing – is the people. We are a really strong, close-knit team. My colleagues are like my family. When someone is struggling with something, we all tend to help out, and it’s great to be a part of that team mentality. I want to keep learning and evolving in my job. And, of course, continue to see the world, experience new cities and travel to beautiful places. Who could ever get bored of that? Certainly not me! •

Noël dernier a été l’un de mes moments les plus mémorables chez Porter. Il était un hiver exécrable à Toronto et tout le personnel a fait un effort pour aider nos clients. Je n’oublierai jamais une cliente, une vieille dame polonaise au caractère pétillant avec qui j’ai parlé pendant plus d’une heure. Elle avait une correspondance à prendre et elle paniquait. En plus, elle parlait à peine l’anglais. Comme je suis d’origine polonaise, j’ai appelé l’autre ligne aérienne pour elle. Quelques semaines plus tard, elle m’a écrit une lettre pour exprimer sa gratitude. Elle l’avait seulement adressée aux « Lignes aériennes Porter », mais la lettre m’est tout de même parvenue et j’ai été très heureuse qu’elle puisse rentrer chez elle à temps pour Noël. J’ai deux petits neveux de 2 et 5 ans qui sont complètement obsédés par les avions. Ils croient que j’habite à l’aéroport. Ils pensent que je suis capable de reconnaître chaque type d’appareil dans le ciel. Ils me les montrent du doigt et ils me demandent quel avion c’est. Si je l’ignore, j’invente une réponse et parfois ils s’en rendent compte. « Magda, ce n’est pas ce que tu as dit la dernière fois ! », s’exclament-ils. Je les adore, ils sont si amusants. Mais ils deviennent trop malins pour ce jeu. L’un des aspects les plus intéressants de mon travail, c’est la formation. J’adore enseigner et transmettre à d’autres l’esprit de Porter et toutes les situations qu’ils pourraient rencontrer comme représentants du service à la clientèle. Nous essayons de faire en sorte que les ateliers soient dynamiques et constructifs en faisant des séances d’improvisation, en imaginant des scénarios différents et en les jouant. C’est amusant mais il faut aussi transmettre l’importance des conséquences si l’on ne comprend pas bien la situation et que l’on ne réagit pas bien. J’ai toujours adoré les voyages. Quand je parle à des amis qui travaillent dans d’autres domaines, ils sont surpris et un peu jaloux en apprenant tous les endroits que j’ai visités. J’ai de la chance car j’ai visité toutes les destinations Porter sauf Washington DC que j’espère bien voir avant la fin de l’année. Comme j’adore les grands espaces, mes destinations préférées sont celles où je peux faire de la randonnée, camper ou skier. J’aime beaucoup Thunder Bay et j’ai déjà campé en pleine nature trois ou quatre fois dans ce coin. J’adore aussi courir dans une nouvelle ville. Je me perds, je fais de l’exercice et voir les sites à pied est incomparable. Le meilleur aspect de mon travail chez Porter – tous les collègues de mon service diraient la même chose – c’est le contact avec les gens. Nous sommes une équipe forte et soudée. Mes collègues sont une seconde famille. Lorsque quelqu’un a un problème, nous mettons tous la main à la pâte pour l’aider et c’est génial de faire partie d’une telle équipe. Je veux continuer à apprendre et à évoluer dans mon travail. Et bien sûr, continuer à visiter de merveilleux endroits. Qui s’en lasserait ? • 53
