September. The leaves are turning and a new, slightly chillier season dawning. The long days of summer are receding, and we’re heading back to school, or back to work. But, helping make our return to the grind easier, autumn is an excellent season in which to plan a weekend away. And at Porter we’re introducing two brand new destinations, to tempt the city slicker and countryside rambler alike. First up: Pittsburgh, a once-industrial steel city turned gastronomic hot spot and thriving cultural enclave, explored in this issue, in our Neighbourhood section, and with flights commencing on September 21. Come October, another new route will open, to the nature-blessed, lake-lying destination of North Bay. So whether you’re in the market for craft cocktails and a wander around The Andy Warhol Museum or for a spot of hiking, biking, kiting and canoeing, this autumn is the season to be spontaneous, adventurous and optimistic. Shine On, Steel City Once a no-nonsense city of steelworks and smokestacks, modern-day Pittsburgh offers everything from gastronomy and nightlife to culture and nature. This is a city that sneaks up on you. Driving in from the airport, you’ll pass thick forests of maple and oak as you manoeuvre along twisting highways. Then, all of a sudden, wham, there it is: a glistening city with dramatic high-rises and a series of soft yellow bridges over dark, rolling rivers. If you could match cities with social media hashtags, you’d probably use #surprise to describe Pittsburgh. It’s a city that has gone from industrial smokestacks to a place of smoking hot restaurants and green technology offices. The city is flanked by three rivers and surrounded by nature trails and bike paths. You can kayak and paddleboard by day and slip into wonderful, affordable restaurants and happening bars at night. It’s hard to find much more diversity than that. And it’s hard to find a more surprising American city than Pittsburgh. Cette ville vous surprendra. Regular entrees as well as smaller, dim sum-style portions are served at this spot in the heart of downtown. The smoky pork belly comes with a bright orange dollop of sambal aioli. One of the inventive mains arrives with tender octopus and a couple dozen mussels in a rich but light tomato-lemongrass broth that you might want to bathe in when you’re finished. Try the Smoke and Mirrors drink, with tequila blanco, Patrón Citrónge, St-Germain liqueur, lime and a hint of Laphroaig Scotch whisky. This is the Market Square outpost of a wildly popular Italian deli/restaurant, with several stores to choose from. Sandwiches are served with vinegar-laced coleslaw and a mountain of fries piled on top of slices of soft bread, in a town that still celebrates working-class food. A sunny and bright Caribbean spot in the surprisingly diverse Strip District, Kaya is a short stroll from downtown. Here, corn and lentil beignets are served with a green curry sauce, while the spicy jerk chicken salad has mountains of fresh romaine lettuce, as well as avocado, bright red cherry tomatoes, mango and sweet pineapple. The conch and corn chowder is rich and zingy. Even the watermelon gazpacho with ginger and scallions has a kick worthy of a Pittsburgh Steelers punter. Located in super-trendy Lawrenceville, where tiny houses with perfect window boxes sit cheek by jowl with renovated hipster homes, Pavement stocks oneof-a-kind items from international and American designers: orange low-rise boots, T-shirts with David Bowie album cover designs and vegetable-wax candles by Paddywax, in scents such as verbena with patchouli. “Some things are on trend, but we want an array of things so anyone can find something they like,” says Heather Cunningham, a store employee. This bright spot in the super-fun Strip District features exhibitions, classes and retail space. The focus here is on functional art versus paintings or decorative works, and it’s all from living artists, many of whom are local. Look for everything from Indiana jewellery made with river rocks, to uniquely shaped wooden bowls from Oregon polished to a mirror-like sheen, to wall decorations fashioned from stop signs and other urban bits. At this shop, a riotous mishmash of colours and styles in the Strip District, you’ll find everything from locally made jewellery to perfectly weathered old dressers. Downstairs there’s an aquamarine shaded daybed from India, which can be styled up with one of the soft kantha blankets that come in a variety of patterns hand-stitched together into unique units. The shop is built in an old flour mill, with impressive arched brick ceilings in the basement. A short walk from downtown, this fantastic facility charts Warhol’s path from local high-school student to worldrenowned pop artist. Housed here are his classic Campbell’s Soup Cans and the famous, multicoloured screens of Marilyn Monroe, which, as you’ll learn, were based on a publicity still from the movie Niagara. There are also videos of psychedelic shows that Warhol helped stage in the 1960s and, wisely, a kids’ play area with toys and dressup clothes. Duquesne Incline

This is a marvellous way to get an overview of the city: a funicular railway that climbs a 30.5-degree incline and connects the Monongahela riverbank with the Mount Washington neighbourhood above. Displayed at the top are amazing old photographs, including shots taken when soot from nearby industrial stacks darkened city skies at midday. Pittsburgh has shifted from steel to medical and technology jobs and green industries, but we’ve kept that blue-collar feel. Everyone says hi. Each neighbourhood has its own identity, but they’re all close-knit. I grew up here and spent time in Chicago and New Orleans, but I’ve come home. It’s such a great place. Pittsburgh est passé de l’acier à la médecine et la technologie, et aux industries vertes, tout en gardant son côté ouvrier. Tout le monde s’y salue. My wife and I live in a 1890s loft apartment in the heart of downtown. We have great city views from our rooftop patio, and we can walk to the theatre or to PNC Park. La situation des populations autochtones au Canada et dans le monde entier a toujours été un de mes engagements d’homme politique. Aujourd’hui, en tant qu’as­ socié chez Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP, en tant qu’avocat, médiateur et arbitre, j’ai l’opportunité de travailler sur le ter­ rain pour les communautés des Premières Nations. C’est un vrai défi, compliqué mais très gratifiant pour moi.

The advancement of Aboriginal rights is a great interest of mine, and has been since 1967, when I spent a summer working in an Inuit community – then called Fort Chimo, now called Kuujjuaq – at the far northern tip of Québec. I went on to study Aboriginal issues, particularly those concerning the far north of Canada, as a law student, and devoted much energy to them as an MP during the patriation of the Consti­ tution as leader of the ONDP in the 1980s, as 21st premier of Ontario in the 1990s and, more recently, as interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2011 to 2013. It’s been a lasting preoccupation, and a lifelong journey.

Je m’intéresse depuis longtemps aux droits des autochtones, depuis 1967, lorsque j’ai travaillé dans la communauté inuite de Kuujjuaq pendant un été – qui s’appe­ lait alors Fort Chimo – au nord du Québec. J’ai alors étudié les questions autochtones, particulièrement les communau­ tés du Grand Nord, en faisant mes études de droit. En tant que député, je leur ai consacré beaucoup d’efforts lors du rapatriement de la Constitution en tant que chef de l’ONDP dans les années 1980, comme 21e premier ministre de l’On­ tario dans les années 1990 et, plus récemment, comme chef intérimaire du Parti libéral du Canada entre 2011 et 2013. C’est un sujet qui m’a préoccupé toute ma vie.

One of my first big challenges on leaving Parliament was to act as adviser to the Matawa Chiefs tribal council, respecting the development of the Ring of Fire mining area in northwestern Ontario. Over the years, I’ve got to know these remote northern communities very well – com­ munities that have always been marginalized in terms of eco­ nomic development. To me it represented an opportunity to try and end this marginalization, to give these communities a voice. And I’m still very much working on it. The process of restoring dignity to Aboriginal communities is something that needs to happen not just in government but in the hearts and minds of every one of us. Canada, the world, needs to fully understand the abuses that development and colonialism have brought to indigenous people in the past, in order to give these people sufficient respect in the modern day. In Canada the dynamic between business, economy and First Nations communities is chan­ ging. There is growing recognition for the need for more sus­ tainable relationships. But there’s a long way to go yet. As a lawyer at Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP, it’s helpful to have an understanding of how governments work and think. I’ve spent a lifetime studying both the decisions of governments and the decisions of the courts, and it’s greatly beneficial to have this dual perspective. What would I wish to be remembered for? The ability to help isolated, poverty­ stricken communities and bring issues to the fore that might otherwise never have been heard. As a politician I was able to talk about First Nations issues, to really raise awareness, and I see this as one of my biggest achievements.

L’un de mes premiers défis en quittant le Parlement a été de représenter le conseil tribal des Chefs Matawa, lors du développement de la zone minière du Cercle de Feu dans le nord­ouest ontarien. Au fil du temps, j’ai appris à bien connaître ces communautés isolées du nord, oubliées par le développement économique. J’ai vu une chance de mettre fin à cette marginalisation, de donner une voix à ces communau­ tés. C’est un projet qui m’occupe encore beaucoup.

I entered politics in my 20s and came from a generation that wanted, needed, their voice to be heard. More and more, however, I’m noticing a decline in participation in politics among young people. As a teacher for the University of Toronto, at the School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG), I try to incentivize young people to engage more. But you need to have passion. Politics is not a career; it’s a vocation. And you need to have passion for an idea or for a set of values – something bigger than yourself and your own career. Aviation is another interest of mine, and I have a relationship with Bombardier and the island airport that goes back a long way. Unlike many other politicians in downtown Toronto, I was always strongly supportive of the airport, believing it represented a unique opportunity for Toronto. And in the early 1990s, I helped turn around the fortunes of de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd., securing Bombardier’s purchase of the company from Boeing Inc. Today, flying these Bombardier aircraft on Porter is a great pleasure for me – most often to Thunder Bay, but also to Ottawa, New York and Washington DC. And I’m looking forward to trying the pedestrian tunnel next week for the first time, when I fly to Boston to give a talk. Work can be busy and demanding, but, like everybody else, I try to find time to relax. I’ve become a grandfather recently, which is wonderful. My wife and I spend a lot of time in our cottage, near Ottawa, enjoying nature and being outdoors. We go to movies regularly. We listen to music. And I still play the piano. I’m a great believer that life can’t all be about work. You have to have a little fun, too! •

Ce processus de restauration de la dignité des communautés autochtones concerne le gouvernement mais aussi le cœur et l’esprit de tout Canadien. Le Canada et le monde doivent réaliser les abus que le développement et la colonisation ont jadis fait subir aux Premières Nations, afin de leur donner le respect qu’elles méritent aujourd’hui. Au Canada, la dynamique entre les entreprises, l’économie et les communautés autochtones est en évolution. On reconnaît davantage le besoin d’instaurer des relations durables. Mais il y encore beaucoup à faire. En tant qu’avocat chez Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP, je dois savoir comment travaillent et pensent les gouvernements. J’ai passé ma vie à étudier les décisions du gouvernement et celles des tribunaux, et cette double perspective est très utile. De quoi aimerais-je qu’on se souvienne ? De ma capacité à aider les communautés isolées et pauvres et d’avoir mis en avant des questions dont on n’aurait pas parlé autrement. En tant qu’homme politique, j’ai pu évoquer les questions liées aux Premières Nations pour sensibiliser les gens et je crois que c’est une de mes plus belles réussites. J’ai commencé la politique quand j’avais une vingtaine d’années et j’appartiens à une génération qui voulait et qui avait besoin de se faire entendre. J’ai toutefois remarqué une baisse de la participation des jeunes en politique. En tant qu’enseignant à l’École de politiques publiques et de gouvernance (SPPG) de l’Université de Toronto, j’essaie de les intéresser. Il faut avoir de la passion. La politique n’est pas une carrière, c’est une vocation. Et vous devez avoir de la passion pour une idée, des valeurs – quelque chose qui vous dépasse, vous et votre carrière. L’aviation est un de mes centres d’intérêts et j’ai des liens anciens avec Bombardier et l’aéroport de l’île. À l’inverse d’autres politiciens de Toronto, j’ai toujours soutenu cet aéroport car je pense qu’il représente une opportunité unique pour la ville. Au début des années 1990, j’ai contribué au redressement de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd., en favorisant son rachat par Bombardier à Boeing Inc. Aujourd’hui, j’ai grand plaisir à voler sur ces Bombardier de Porter – souvent pour aller à Thunder Bay, mais aussi à Ottawa, New York ou Washington DC. Et je suis impatient d’essayer le tunnel piétonnier la semaine prochaine, lorsque j’irai à Boston pour donner une conférence. Mon travail est prenant et exigeant, mais, comme tout le monde, j’essaie de prendre le temps de me détendre. Je suis depuis peu grand-père, ce qui est merveilleux. Ma femme et moi passons beaucoup de temps dans notre cottage, près d’Ottawa, pour profiter de la nature et des grands espaces. Nous allons au cinéma, nous écoutons de la musique et je joue encore du piano. Je crois que la vie ne se résume pas au travail. Il faut aussi savoir s’amuser un peu ! •

business enterprise that owns and operates Billy Bishop and was responsible for bringing this ambitious project to fruition. “It connects a fantastic, much loved airport to a vibrant, much loved city.” And in just six short, sweet, strollable minutes. The tunnel is a win for Torontonians, giving them more pre-flight time to play with and allowing them to saunter to and from the airport in style. What does the tunnel offer passengers that the ferry system doesn’t? “The ferry ride is still swift, reliable and justifiably loved by many passengers,” says Wilson, “but at the end of the day, the tunnel allows passengers to come and go under their own clock and at their own speed.” Enter the one-storey mainland pavilion, a striking, attention-demanding design by the Torontoand Vancouver-based ZAS Architects + Interiors. Then take a 10-storey plunge in a high-speed elevator, beneath the waters of Lake Ontario and deep inside the bedrock – into the 550-foot-long tunnel itself. With moving sidewalks, interactive digital screens and soft, ambient lighting, it’s easy to forget that you’re 100 feet below street level. Or at least until you catch a glimpse of the banks of escalators that ascend to the island atrium, which, at the equivalent of 153 staircase steps, are among the longest in the country. On arrival in the atrium, you’ll be greeted by a life-sized replica of a Nieuport 17, the fighter plane of the airport’s namesake, flying ace Billy Bishop. Hanging from the ceiling as if in mid-flight, the model took approximately 1,200 hours to build. (And rumour has it that if outfitted with a proper engine, the plane could actually fly.) Ken Lundy, vice-president of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment at PortsToronto, was on site regularly during the construction of the tunnel, and has been working on the project since it was first proposed in 2009. He saw it evolve from merely an idea to a blueprint to a buzzing, bustling building site. And it was this last phase that brought the most challenges – and, in answer to these challenges – the most cutting-edge technology. Before the main tunnel was excavated, seven arching mini tunnels were drilled to ensure that there were no fissures or breaks in the bedrock that could cause water issues. Once those supports were in place, they allowed two boring drills – play18

Ce tunnel est une aubaine pour les Torontois car il leur fait gagner du temps avant leur vol tout en leur permettant de se rendre à l’aéroport ou de le quitter en grand style. Quel est son avantage par rapport au traversier ? « Ce dernier est rapide, fiable et apprécié par de nombreux passagers, dit Wilson, mais au bout du compte, le tunnel leur permet d’aller et venir à leur guise et à leur rythme. » Les passagers entrent par le superbe pavillon d’un étage conçu par ZAS Architects + Interiors, un cabinet de Toronto et Vancouver. De là, ils descendent de dix étages par des ascenseurs rapides, sous les eaux du lac Ontario pour accéder au tunnel de 167 mètres proprement dit. Avec ses trottoirs automatisés, ses écrans interactifs et son éclairage d’ambiance, il est facile d’oublier qu’on se trouve à 100 pieds sous terre, jusqu’au moment où l’on aperçoit les escaliers roulants qui conduisent jusqu’à l’atrium côté insulaire. Équivalents à un escalier de 153 marches, ils sont parmi les plus longs du pays. Dans l’atrium, on est accueilli par une réplique taille réelle d’un Nieuport 17, l’avion de chasse de Billy Bishop, le héros à qui l’aéroport doit son nom.

fully dubbed Chip and Dale – to dig underneath and excavate the main tunnel’s core. Then, gallons of concrete were poured to form the ceiling and walls of the tunnel. And those seven mini tunnels do more than support the main core – they also support the residents on Toronto island. “The residential communities get all their water from a filtration plant on Centre Island, but it’s only one source,” explains Lundy. “If a main goes down, you don’t have that redundancy.” Collaborating with the City of Toronto, PortsToronto incorporated municipal water and sewer mains into three of the seven drifts, saving around $10 million in duplicate construction costs. (As for the total budget of the tunnel project, the $82.5 million price tag was funded by a public-private partnership, which means no taxpayer money was used.) Doing justice to its pioneering engineering, the tunnel’s interior design is equally smart, slick and high-tech. Its 42 digital screens connect to the newly launched Billy app, which offers plenty of concierge-style services like flight info, weather updates and estimated wait times at various places in the airport. The tunnel’s innovative design has already received a couple of engineering awards, but the project’s most striking elements have nothing to do with futuristic technology or modern innovation. “When you fly into Billy Bishop, you really get to see a fantastic panoramic view of the city itself,” says Paul Stevens, senior principal at ZAS. “We wanted to build off of that experience.” As arriving passengers leave the island and prepare for the descent into the tunnel, the atrium’s windows offer an expansive, picture-perfect view of the CN Tower. This incredible, potent image, whether you’re a first-time visitor or long-time resident, is like a postcard proclaiming: Welcome to Toronto. And the city’s latest piece of infrastructure – easy, efficient and enjoyable – is indeed a welcome •

Il a fallu 1200 heures pour le construire. (Selon la rumeur, doté d’un moteur, il pourrait voler.) The city of North Bay is built around the shores of Lake Nipissing, a large body of water in Northern Ontario, shallow enough to freeze over in winter (with ice sturdy enough to drive ATVs on) and warm enough to swim in during the summer. North Bay’s history is intrinsically linked to the three railway lines that once operated there: those freight and passenger trains made logging and mining a reality in the late 1800s, and later carried droves of visitors to gawk at the Dionne quintuplets, a set of five identical sisters born in 1934 who rose to a celebrity status, rivalling the Kardashians in their time. These days the mining sector is alive and well, and the city boasts 55,000 residents, even more when the university students are around. North Bay is a business-friendly community with a vibrant local economy, home to not only mining but forestry, manufacturing, construction and communications companies, and situated at a strategic crossroads for rail, road, air and fibre optic routes. Also, there’s much beauty to behold. If you’re eager to witness that beauty first thing in the morning, start with Duchesnay Falls, west of town off Highway 17. Don’t look for a sign indicating where to turn; just pass the health centre and take the first right into the small parking lot (and if you see Little Lakes Road, you’ve gone too far). The trail loop runs about three kilometres (1.86 miles), but my party was so eager to see the water that we climbed the escarpment directly toward the falls, at one point following several other tourists who took a shortcut and scaled the rather steep rocks. We should have slowed down to enjoy the view. Tow24

La ville de North Bay s’étend sur les berges du lac Nipissing, une vaste étendue d’eau dans le nord de l’Ontario, assez peu profonde pour geler en hiver (la glace peut même supporter des VTT), et assez chaude en été pour s’y baigner. L’histoire de North Bay est intrinsèquement liée à celle des trois lignes de chemin de fer qui la desservaient jadis. Les trains de marchandise et de passagers firent de l’exploitation des mines et du bois une réalité à la fin des années 1800, puis acheminèrent par la suite des flots de visiteurs venus admirer les quintuplés Dionne, cinq sœurs identiques nées en 1934 qui devinrent des célèbres – un genre de Kardashian d’antan. Aujourd’hui, l’activité minière se poursuit et la ville compte 55 000 habitants, encore plus quand les étudiants de l’université sont présents. North Bay est une communauté propice aux affaires et l’économie locale prospère avec non seulement les mines, mais aussi l’exploitation forestière, la fabrication, la construction et la communication. C’est un carrefour stratégique pour le train, l’avion et la fibre optique. Et elle recèle bien des beautés naturelles. Pour profiter de cette beauté tôt le matin, commencez par Duchesnay Falls, à l’ouest de la ville, en prenant l’autoroute 17. Ne cherchez pas le panneau où bifurquer; après le centre de soins, il faut prendre la première à droite, conduisant à un petit parc de stationnement (si vous tombez sur Little Lakes Road, vous êtes allés trop loin). Ce sentier circulaire parcourt trois kilomètres mais mon groupe voulant voir l’eau, nous avons franchi l’escarpement directement en direction de la cascade, en suivant d’autres touristes qui avait pris un raccourci et escaladé des rochers

Why, eat waffles, of course! The farmers’ market in North Bay is held every Wednesday and Saturday into October. On Saturdays, you’ll find it at the corner of Oak and Wyld Streets. Besides customary offerings like homemade jams, jellies and chutneys; soaps and candles; and farm-fresh produce, you’ll also find wheatgrass shots, balloon animals and, at Mike Mossington’s stall, handmade hunting, fishing and camping knives. Now, about those waffles. At the Birch Gourmet Waffles stand, Brogan Adrian and Nathan Snider are the young entrepreneurs behind propositions like the Dentist’s Dilemma or the Skinny Jean – a traditional Belgian recipe loaded with homemade strawberry compote and topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. And if you happen to like a little dessert with your dessert, you’ll find Amish fry pies nearby, easy-to-transport mini-pies in a glazed half-moon shell. Yes, that’s right. Portable pies. I had three. From the market, amble over to Main Street, the heart of North Bay’s shopping and arts district. Among the clothing shops and galleries, you’ll find an anomaly: Katie Bevan’s co-op, The Farm. Here, artists and makers of all stripes share studio space in the back and sell their work out front. After years spent abroad, Katie, a painter and fashion designer, came home to create a space where artists could connect with and inspire each other, and she liked the idea that shoppers could meet the makers in person. On reflection, Katie’s place is perhaps less an anomaly and more an embodiment of North

Bay’s openness and community. She’s also an excellent resource when it comes to the thriving local arts scene, as the chair of a council promoting artists who choose to make North Bay their home. People like Amanda Burk, who operates the Line Gallery; emerging watercolorist Jaymie Lathem; and Duane Linklater, winner of the prestigious Sobey Art Award in 2013. At the Opera Bakery Café, next door, you’ll find another kind of art. Housed in a former turn-ofthe-century jewellery store, the café is owned by Kiera and Jonathan, who have maintained many of the original fittings. On offer are treats including caramel truffle tarts, chocolate pecan toffee bars, pink velvet cakelets and triple chocolate cupcakes, all made in-house. If you only have room for one, try the lemon square. It’s buttery and moist, silky and light, tart, bright, sweet and creamy all at once. Early evening is the ideal time to head back to your hotel and relax, preferably with a glass of wine and a view of the water. The 21-unit Sunset Inn, with several private cottages, heart-shaped Jacuzzis and direct beach access, is just the place for unwinding. The main building is a traditional log house with interlocking corners, and it’s serviced by two of the best restaurants in town: the White Owl Bistro, specializing in farm-to-table fare, and Churchill’s Prime Rib House. Wondering if you can eat a steak in a heart-shaped tub? The answer is yes. If getting out is more your speed, plan on dinner at Arugula, Churchill’s younger, hipper sister. Where Churchill’s is a well-worn British clubhouse (think wood panelling, Tiffany lamps and a baby grand), by contrast Arugula is bustling, urbane and chic, with high ceilings, black and glass. Owner Jimmy Kolios had everything flown in from Italy. “Only thing I didn’t bring?” he asks. “The sand and the water.” Its most stunning feature, however, is the spectacular view. The restaurant abuts a wooded creek, and half of the space is a screened-in patio, overlooking lush greenery. Enjoy chewy, thin-crust pizza and tender, lightly breaded calamari.

In the morning, for breakfast head over to Colonel Hoagie’s, a 1950s-themed diner complete with turquoise vinyl booths and, at least in my case, a waitress named Dolores. Breakfast at Hoagie’s is inexpensive and unpretentious. I had the Ultimate omelette: everything from the kitchen, hold the sink, add cheese. If you’re feeling brave, you might also attempt the Hoagie’s burger challenge, which pits you against a fivepatty burger. If you can finish within an hour, and then stay in your seat another five minutes, you’ll take home a T-shirt as a trophy. North Bay takes it easy on Sundays, and most businesses are closed, so it’s the perfect time to spend a restful afternoon in and around the lake. First up, stop at the Heritage Railway and Carousel Company – kids will love it, but it’s worth a look no matter whom you’re with. You’ll find a half mile of mini-railway and two gloriously restored carousels, all thanks to the hard work of hundreds of volunteers who donate their time and skills, from the carving of the horses to the maintenance of the tracks. And at $2 a ticket, the Heritage Railway and Carousel Company isn’t in it for the money. After speaking with Bill White, a retiree who spends a few hours a week manning the carousel, I get it: it’s about making a little magic by and for the community. Moored at the pier across from the carousel, you’ll find the Chief Commanda II, a 100-foot catamaran with room for more than 300 people, two bars and an outdoor barbecue. Excursions range in duration from 1.5 to 4 hours – there are sunset

Le restaurant est en bordure d’une crique boisée et la moitié de son espace est une terrasse qui domine une végétation luxuriante. Savourez-y une pizza croustillante ou des calmars frits. Le lendemain, pour le déjeuner, allez au Colonel Hoagie’s, un resto style années 1950 avec banquettes en vinyle turquoise et, au moins dans mon cas, une serveuse nommée Dolorès. Le déjeuner est bon marché et sans prétention. J’ai pris l’omelette Ultime : tout ce qu’il y avait en cuisine, moins l’évier, plus le fromage. Si vous en avez le courage, vous tenterez le défi hamburger de Hoagie’s, vous contre un hamburger de cinq étages de viande. Si vous finissez en moins d’une heure et restez à votre place encore cinq minutes, vous rentrerez chez vous avec le T-shirt de la maison en prime.

dinners, scenic cruises to the Manitou Islands or the upper French River and, in the fall, leaf peeping along Nipissing’s north shore. Back on dry land, nip in for a beer and some waffle fries at the original Chief Commanda, otherwise known as The Boat. Built in 1946, after a long service on the lake, it is now permanently docked and converted into a restaurant and bar. Head down a gangplank toward the stern, and out onto a large patio, where you can find a table close enough to the water to feel the breaking waves kick up an occasional spray. And if you have any energy left, take a few paces over to the trailhead for the Kate Pace Way, a 12.4-kilometre (7.7-mile) trail that will provide you with a paved stroll from the waterfront all the way to the neighbouring town of Callander. If you’re walking, take a leisurely journey along the stone path next to the lake before joining up with the paved path that’ll see you through the rest of the hike. On my last morning in town, I get to talking with my neighbour at the hotel. “Well, I’m from here originally,” he says and takes out his phone, opening a video of a gorgeous landscape on North Bay’s Marathon Beach, all sand and sky and waves coming in to shore below a golden sunset.

Le dimanche, la plupart des magasins sont fermés. C’est donc le jour idéal pour un aprèsmidi paisible sur le lac et ses alentours. Tout d’abord, faites étape à l’Heritage Railway and Carousel Company, les enfants adoreront et cela vaut le coup d’œil quel que soit votre âge. Vous découvrirez 800 mètres de chemin de fer miniature et deux manèges superbement restaurés, grâce au travail de centaines de volontaires qui ont consacré leur temps et leur savoir-faire à la sculpture des chevaux ou à l’entretien des voies. À 2 $ le billet, ce n’est pas une opération lucrative. Une conversation avec Bill White, un retraité qui fait fonctionner le manège, m’éclaire : il s’agit bien d’apporter un peu de rêve à la communauté. Le Chief Commanda II est amarré au quai en face du manège. C’est un catamaran de 100 pieds qui peut embarquer 300 personnes et compte deux bars et un barbecue en plein air. Les excursions durent de 1 heure 30 à 4 heures – il y a des soupers au crépuscule, des croisières jusqu’aux îles Manitou ou sur la French River et, à l’automne, on peut admirer les couleurs des arbres sur la rive nord du lac Nipissing. De retour sur la terre ferme, passez chez Chief Commanda – aussi appelé The Boat – pour une bière et des frites gaufrées. Construit en 1946, après des années de service sur le lac, c’est désormais un bar-restaurant qui reste à quai. La passerelle vous mènera à une vaste terrasse où vous trouverez une table assez proche de l’eau pour sentir le ressac. Don’t cry waterfowl over the convoluted name – it’s an acknowledgement of this restaurant’s ownership by esteemed chef Anthony Rose, and of his retaining the formidably feathered sobriquet (and iconic sign) of the long-running Queen Street West diner it formerly housed. But the California valley quail might have been a more fitting avian inspiration, as the food and the surfy interiors have a distinct West Coast vibe. The former rubber factory houses a couple of special stills that produce a full-bodied, unoaked white rum and a light, crisp, London dry-style gin. They started their online store in 2009 and now run an in-person outlet, the Pattern Room, in the heart of Boston’s busy financial district, where everyone from captains of industry to tech start-uppers can order everything from tuxedos, pinstripes and cashmere topcoats to houndstooth blazers, chinos and light-rinse chambray shirts. It used to be a church rectory, as the pew seats, choir box bar and stained glass window attest, but these days there’s a different kind of service at Jamaica Plain’s Frogmore – the presentation of low-country cooking, a form of Southern fare with an Afro-Caribbean influence, courtesy of South Carolinian chef Jason Albus. Because owners Reed Adelson and Christian Ramos, alumni of Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago (and both with moms named Virginia), have combined to produce a vibrant, modern, bistro-style, finedining experience in the East Village, with small plates like crispy sweetbreads with apricot, pea leaves and charred lemon followed by entrees such as roasted duck breast with fermented soybean, plum, cilantro and plum vinaigrette. As Virginia Woolf herself said: “One cannot think well if one has not dined well.” Cette Virginia n’a rien à voir avec celle chantée par Roxy Music ni avec Woolf, l’auteure anglaise. Laura: We’re a close-knit, two-person team that keeps Porter’s 1,400 uniformed staff looking good every day. Porter always sees their brand from the full picture, from the way the lounge is designed to what their employees are wearing. Our task is to look after the latter – to make sure that our staff is an extension of the Porter brand at all times, from the moment they put on their uniform until they slip out of it. Julia: It’s rewarding to empower our colleagues to perform their job tasks at their best, be it the above-wing staff – the pilots, customer service representatives and flight attendants – wearing the Porter suiting collection, or the belowwing staff in their workwear pants and safety vests. Our team is small but mighty. One minute you will see us with measuring tapes around our necks, the next minute we’re walking around the office with a rolling rack, or we’re picking up some fresh dry cleaning that has just come in. We are two women doing the work of 25 people. Laura: The Porter uniforms were first designed when the airline started in 2006. In 2011, when I came on board as Uniform Supervisor, the wide-leg dress pants were definitely not modern anymore. It was time for a refresh, I thought, so I put together a plan for our executive team. I promised cost savings and better uniforms, did surveys with staff, sourced samples from manufacturers, drew sketches. And three years later in 2014, the new uniforms were finally there,complete with a smartly updated suiting collection by Tombolini, a stylish flight attendant purse by Aldo, Rimowa suitcases, new scarves and ties and a shift dress that I designed myself. My aim was to marry fashion and function. Julia: My background is in retail and merchandising – I used to work in the Porter lounge until I had the opportunity to support Laura in the Uniforms Department last year. While Laura does more of the sourcing and purchasing, I act as the front-facing person with all our new starters and long-term employees in need of a new uniform. I do the fittings and tell employees how to wear and take care of the items. Since I come from a uniformed position at Porter myself, I understand how important our uniforms are.

Julia : Il est gratifiant de permettre à nos collègues de faire leur travail en étant chics, qu’il s’agisse du personnel navigant – pilotes, représentants du service à la clientèle et agents de bord – portant la collection d’uniformes Porter, ou du personnel au sol, portant pantalons de travail et vestes de sécurité. Notre équipe est petite mais efficace. Un instant, vous nous voyez avec le ruban à mesurer autour du cou, l’instant d’après nous traversons les bureaux avec un porte-cintres ou encore nous recevons la livraison du nettoyage à sec. Nous sommes deux femmes qui faisons le travail de 25 personnes. Laura : Les uniformes de Porter ont été dessinés aux débuts de l’entreprise en 2006. Julia: We’re in the process of moving to our own showroom, which takes over space in a hangar at Billy Bishop. Since we dress everyone right across all our stations, I often fly to our outstation bases for the day to see those employees who can’t come to the showroom in Toronto. We have also just set up an online ordering system, allowing staff to order their uniforms right from their desktops. Laura and I work very tightly together. When I see that we’re running low on stock, Laura orders more, making sure that I always have enough pieces to work with. We’re like the yin and the yang. Laura: The most rewarding feeling I had was when we launched the new uniforms last year. We did a party and invited employees to come pick up their items. Everyone was so excited. When I saw one of our crew in the new female pilot’s uniform that we designed, I felt particularly proud. It was a first in the history of Porter. Because there’s a smaller percentage of women in the cockpit, airlines traditionally provide a men’s blazer that they simply tailor to them. I’m all about empowering women in the aviation industry, so it was important to me to give our female pilots a proper-fitting power suit. Now, when our women pilots walk through the airports in their blazers and pants, they always get compliments from other airlines. They are looking really sharp. Julia: Outside of work, our lives still very much revolve around fashion. I’m a vintage kind of girl who loves finding treasures from the past at antiques markets, whereas Laura tends to shop online more. We are lucky to combine our interest in fashion with our everyday job. Laura: We first met when Julia was still working in the lounge, and we spoke the same language. We’re such a great team; we can read each other’s mind. Or why else would we come to work in the same clothes on a regular basis? •

Comme nous habillons tout le personnel dans nos stations, je vais souvent voir les employés de nos destinations qui ne peuvent pas venir à notre salon de Toronto. Nous venons aussi de mettre en service un système de commande en ligne qui leur permet de commander leur uniforme depuis leur bureau. Laura et moi travaillons en étroite collaboration. Quand je vois que le stock baisse, Laura passe une commande pour que j’aie en permanence assez de pièces. Nous sommes le yin et le yang. Laura : mon meilleur moment a été l’an dernier, quand nous avons lancé les nouveaux uniformes. Nous avons fait une soirée où les employés étaient invités à recueillir leurs articles. Tout le monde était si excité. Quand j’ai vu une membre d’équipage dans le nouvel uniforme de pilote que nous avions dessiné, j’ai été vraiment fière. C’était une première dans l’histoire de Porter. Du fait du faible pourcentage de femmes au poste de pilotage, les compagnies leur fournissent souvent un veston d’homme qu’elles ajustent. Je suis pour le soutien aux femmes dans le secteur de l’aviation, aussi il était important de donner à nos pilotes femmes un habit sur mesure. Aujourd’hui, quand elles traversent les aéroports en blazer-pantalon, les autres lignes aériennes les félicitent. Elles ont vraiment fière allure. Julia : En dehors du travail, nos vies tournent toujours autour de la mode. Je suis plutôt du genre rétro et j’adore dénicher des trésors du passé dans les marchés. Laura fait plutôt ses achats en ligne. Nous avons de la chance de marier notre intérêt pour la mode et notre travail quotidien. Laura : Nous nous sommes rencontrées quand Julia travaillait au salon et nous parlions le même langage. Nous formons une équipe géniale. Chacune peut lire les pensées de l’autre.
