Mont Tremblant and Burlington: these are only two of Porter’s popular winter destinations. Québec City, meanwhile, never more beautiful than it is in deep winter, offers a visitor everything from winter carnivals to cozy Québécois restaurants and rejuvenating Nordic spas. Or if you’re a sun lover, and you find the prospect of winter long, why not take a spirit-lifting trip to our new Orlando-Melbourne destination? A good dose of Florida sunshine will be sure to tide you over until February. So splash out a sunny southern Weekender or grab your hat and mitts and get ready for the snowy season. Greenpoint of Interest A serene slice of the city, Greenpoint is noted by its residents as one of the few areas of New York that truly feel like communities. Quartier tranquille de New York, Greenpoint est apprécié par ses résidents comme l’un des rares voisinages de la ville où règne un sens de la communauté.

Greenpoint’s transit connections to Manhattan aren’t great. The only subway that runs through Brooklyn’s northernmost neighbourhood is the G, the one line in the system that doesn’t actually touch Manhattan. But in a city that has been turned upside down by gentrification in the last 15 years, this is a good thing.The area marks where Brooklyn peters out into Queens – and it’s partly because of its lackluster connections that it’s quieter here than in Williamsburg, its rambunctious neighbour to the south, and hasn’t undergone the same breakneck redevelopment as the adjacent Long Island City. The streets, lined with mature trees and historic brownstones, convey classic Brooklyn, so it’s no surprise that series like Girls and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are frequently filmed in this area. Herewith, a series of (Green)pointers for exploration. Greenpoint est mal relié à Manhattan. Seule la ligne G du métro traverse ce voisinage au nord de Brooklyn, or elle ne dessert pas Manahattan. Eat/Drink Five Leaves

Australian food is one part history and one part proximity: it combines attitudes of British cuisine from its colonial past with the spices and flavours of (relatively) nearby Southeast Asia. Five Leaves was opened by a group of Aussies, who have imparted their motherland’s finest to this morning-tomidnight hangout. The mood is decidedly chilled out, and the interiors, by the borough’s restaurant design wunderkind, John McCormick, evoke otherworldly seafaring, complete with a submarine-salvaged clock that hangs above the bar. Community is at the heart of this neighbourhood bistro that feeds and libates the locals along a circular art deco bar. The local vibe extends to the menu, too; vegetables are picked up at the Greenmarket at Union Square, and all seafood is sourced from Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co. The seasonal American fare and elevated bar food mark Alameda as a dignified destination for an after-work burger or an equally elegant dinner date spot. Each dish is a divinely modern take on a Middle Eastern classic; try the carved lamb, a dish that owner Sarah Conklin describes as a deconstructed shawarma. But with the hypercare given to the hyper curated brews, let alone the surprisingly valid argument that coffee can range in price the way wine does, an exquisite Swedish coffee or smoked salmon on rye is well worth it. Home of the Brave

Home of the Brave began as a pop-up in a warehouse off Greenpoint Avenue, and like miniskirts, the Internet and homemade pickles, the concept just stuck. The brick-and-mortar location has been open for two years, and owners Max and Bethany Vogel sell an immaculate selection of rugs, quilts and ceramics in a palette of cool pastels, all produced by their robust network of artisans. Duke’s Liquor Box sells every kind of spirit except for the ones you’ve heard of. Offerings from offbeat distilleries line the shelves, as do international selections that were already a rarity in their home countries. These are “superior to big-name brands because they are made with love, not robots,” explains one tattooed sales associate. Tastings are held Fridays and Saturdays, and passersby are welcome to have a drink and buy a bottle, or simply have a drink. This year-old contemporary art gallery sits on the third floor of the Eberhard Faber Pencil Company Historic District, an old pencil factory complex that houses woodworking studios, a vintage furniture shop and tech offices. Exhibiting a diverse mix of emerging international artists alongside local talent, gallery owner Owen Houhoulis is helping create a conversation around international art, especially that of Southeast Asia, which might not otherwise exist in New York. Transmitter Park was opened, as the name suggests, on the former site of the WNYC radio transmission towers in 2012. Brave the November cold and walk along the pier for a moody skyline of Manhattan skyscrapers. It’s a view of the city the way Woody Allen would have intended it. I’m a writer and don’t work in an office, so I tour around the different coffee shops in the neighbourhood. My favourite, Champion Coffee, is where I wrote almost all of my books. Je suis écrivaine et comme je ne travaille pas dans un bureau, je fais la tournée des cafés du voisinage. C’est dans mon préféré, Champion Coffee, que j’écris presque tous mes livres.

Greenpoint is the first place I’ve lived where I felt like I was part of the neighbourhood. It could be because I’m getting a little older, but I like the pace here. I was in Williamsburg for seven years and saw it change pretty rapidly. I have a feeling that my corner of Greenpoint is going to maintain a certain character even if the demographics change. Greenpoint est le premier lieu où j’ai vécu, où je sens que je fais partie du voisinage. C’est peut-être parce que je suis un peu plus âgé, mais j’aime son rythme. J’ai habité à Williamsburg pendant sept ans et je l’ai vu changer rapidement. Je crois que mon coin de Greenpoint va conserver son caractère, même si sa population change.

We just moved to Greenpoint and love it. We keep finding new pockets to explore, each with its own history. Our favourite building is an old mansion on Oak Street that was a “Home for the Aged” and now looks like a haunted house. There’s a great Polish restaurant called Krolewskie Jadło, with wooden booths and two sets of knights in armour, which is really endearing. Nous venons d’arriver à Greenpoint et nous adorons. Nous découvrons de nouveaux endroits, chacun avec sa propre histoire. Notre bâtiment préféré est une vieille maison de retraite sur Oak Street, qui a l’air d’une maison hantée. I’m a director at Sapient Global Markets, which is a division of Publicis.Sapient, formed earlier this year by the acquisition of Sapient by Publicis Groupe. Within Global Markets we provide business and technology services and solutions to firms in the capital markets and commodity industries, transforming the way participants, regulators and intermediaries work. I am responsible for helping grow our business in Toronto, which involves understanding the market needs, meeting new clients, and building and maintaining strong relationships with existing ones, as well as handling our teams internally. What do I like about my job? I like the different situations it puts me in. I tend to think of myself as a collector of experiences, who experiments with various situations, analyzes them and solves the problems behind them. I have been with Sapient for 10 years, but I get to reinvent myself and explore something new periodically – whether it’s building a new client relationship or adapting to change in today’s fast-evolving marketplace. It’s the problem-solving aspect of the consulting business that speaks to me the most. I live in Chicago but work out of Toronto, where my client responsibilities are. The ease of flying into Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport with Porter Airlines allows me to split my time between the city that my family and I call home, and the hub for my job responsibilities in the capital and commodity markets. I embark on the Chicagoto-Toronto flight on a weekly basis, heading out there on Tuesdays and usually returning on Thursdays or Fridays. I love the overall convenience of landing so close to downtown Toronto, where the Sapient Global Markets office is. I couldn’t imagine doing this if I had to commute into Pearson airport every week – it would be a very tiring experience. Every Tuesday, I get on the 6:30 a.m. flight from the Chicago Midway airport to Toronto, which gets me into Billy Bishop just after 9 a.m. Usually I arrive at our office in downtown Toronto by 9:30 a.m. Sometimes I even get there before some of my colleagues, who live only a short drive away but are dependent on unpredictable factors such as bad traffic or a shortage of parking spaces. It’s just amazing to think that I’ve already flown between two countries before I tackle the day’s work ahead of me. The rest of my day is normally spent moving between meetings

downtown and potentially a client dinner before I wind down for the night. After two or three days in Toronto, I get on one of Porter’s evening flights back to Chicago and land just in time to spend some downtime with my family on the weekend. Being a Frequent Flyer on Porter has lots of advantages, as it allows me to get through check-in, security and border control hassle free. Since I’ve been travelling on the same flight every week for over five years now, I’ve come to know the individuals working at both airports, as well as Porter’s inflight crew and some other regular passengers travelling with me. Not only does this speed things up, but being in such a friendly environment also makes commuting fun – week after week. I like dividing my time between two cities, as it helps me get that work-life balance right. When I land back in Chicago after my days working in Toronto, I know that it’s time to relax and spend time with my loved ones. I have a wife and two daughters – one is 14, the other one is three. The younger of the two loves the Cookie It Up cookies that I bring back from the Porter lounge. I always make sure to take a couple of bags for her – it’s a great way for us to bond. While family takes up most of my relaxation time, I also like running and playing music. I’ve been learning different styles of music throughout my life, and it’s become a huge part of who I am. At the moment I’m into Indian classical music. What does the future hold for me? With the current pace at which our world is changing, it’s difficult to predict things, of course. But I’d like to carry on working with big ideas every day, bring them to life and provoke change through them. The essence of my philosophy is collaboration and persistence. Always take a problem from the core, give it everything you have, get the right talent to work with you and persevere. And it’s just as important to never lose the desire to keep learning, whether it’s on a personal or professional level. I’ve just started taking Spanish lessons – not for work though, but for fun. So many things are heavily influenced by the Spanish language in the US, so, I thought, why not? I’ll give it a shot •

Chaque mardi, je prends le vol de 6 h 30 entre Chicago Midway et Toronto. J’atterris à Billy Bishop juste après 9 h 00. D’habitude, j’arrive à nos bureaux de Toronto vers 9 h 30. Parfois, je suis déjà sur place quand mes collègues arrivent – ils n’habitent pas loin mais ils subissent les aléas des embouteillages ou du manque de places de stationnement. C’est incroyable de penser que j’ai pris un vol entre deux pays avant même de commencer ma journée de travail. Le reste du jour se passe entre les réunions en ville et souvent un souper avec un client avant de pouvoir me détendre en soirée. Après deux ou trois jours à Toronto, je prends un vol en soirée pour rentrer à Chicago et j’arrive à temps pour profiter pleinement de la fin de semaine avec ma famille. Il y a bien des avantages à être un Voyageur fréquent sur Porter. Cela me permet de franchir l’enregistrement et les contrôles de sécurité sans souci. Comme je prends le même vol chaque semaine depuis cinq ans, je connais les employés des deux aéroports et le personnel navigant de Porter, sans oublier les autres habitués qui voyagent avec moi. Non seulement cela accélère le processus, mais un environnement aussi chaleureux rend le trajet plus agréable – semaine après semaine. J’aime partager mon temps entre deux villes. Cela m’aide à trouver un équilibre entre travail et vie familiale. Quand je reviens à Chicago après mon travail à Toronto, je sais que je vais pouvoir me détendre et passer du temps avec mes proches. J’ai une femme et deux filles – l’une a 14 ans et l’autre 3 ans. La plus jeune adore les biscuits Cookie It Up que je ramène du salon Porter. Je n’oublie jamais d’en prendre un ou deux paquets pour elle – cela renforce nos liens. Si ma famille occupe la plupart de mon temps, j’aime aussi courir et jouer de la musique. Au fil des ans, j’ai appris différents styles de musique et c’est un aspect important de ma vie. En ce moment, je suis dans la musique classique indienne. Comment je vois mon avenir? Au rythme où change notre monde, il est difficile de faire des prévisions. Mais je voudrais continuer à travailler sur de grands concepts au quotidien, leur donner vie et parvenir à amener du changement. Le cœur de ma philosophie est collaboration et persistance. Attaquez toujours un problème de face, donnez votre maximum, entourez-vous des talents nécessaires et persévérez. Le désir de continuer à apprendre est tout aussi primordial, sur le plan privé ou professionnel. J’ai commencé à apprendre l’espagnol – pas pour le travail, mais comme activité de loisir. Aux États-Unis, tant de choses sont influencées par la langue espagnole que je me suis dit : « Pourquoi pas? Essayons ça. » •

With roots in the city going back to 1919, few other retailers are as prominently woven into the identity of Toronto as the grocer Loblaws. Whether through its supermarket chain (Canada’s largest), private label products or the philanthropic efforts of the Westons, the family who owns the company, the brand enjoys a nearly ubiquitous profile among Toronto households. That close identification with the city’s history was only strengthened by the company’s wellreceived conversion of Maple Leaf Gardens – a hockey arena and iconic local landmark built in 1931 – into a retail and sports complex with a flagship Loblaws store as the anchor tenant. Now the company has set its sights on another Toronto heritage building, though this time the landmark happens to be one of its own. Occupying the northeast corner of Bathurst and Lake Shore, a short distance from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the 87-year-old Loblaws groceteria building was once a state-of-the-art warehouse and production facility. For the past few decades, it has sat largely vacant. But earlier this year, City Hall gave the go-ahead for a dramatic resurrection of the site, one that promises to reanimate a slice of Toronto’s forgotten history. The owners of the West Block project, Wittington Properties (the real estate arm of the Weston’s holding company) and Choice Properties (a public company whose majority shareholder is Loblaw), are working in conjunction with residential developer Concord Adex. The project will restore the old Loblaws groceteria building to house a new Loblaws and other retail, capped with an inset glass box containing three additional storeys of office space. Behind the main building, two condo towers will rise up to 37 and 41 storeys each, hemmed in by the elevated Gardiner Expressway at the north end of the site.

Au début de cette année, la municipalité a donné le feu vert pour une régénération du site qui promet de redonner vie à une portion oubliée de l’histoire de Toronto. Les propriétaires du projet West Block, Wittington Properties (la branche immobilère du portefeuille des Weston) et Choice Properties (société anonyme dont l’actionnaire majoritaire est Loblaw) collaborent avec le promoteur résidentiel Concord Adex. Le projet va restaurer l’ancien bâtiment pour accueillir un nouveau Loblaws et d’autres commerces, et une structure cubique en verre qui hébergera trois étages de bureaux. “The groceteria once represented a lot, both to our brand and the city,” says Tony Grossi, president of Wittington Properties. “Loblaw’s Maple Leaf Gardens project gave us credibility with the city in terms of working with a heritage site. It taught us to be mindful that we’re really being stewards for Toronto’s history.” Built on infill atop what was once the city’s western wharf, the Loblaws groceteria opened its doors in 1928 as the new centre of operations for the then decade-old company, consolidating all its business, warehousing and production under one massive roof. Designed by the architectural firm Sparling, Martin and Forbes, and accented with geometric art deco detailing, it was a temple to the wonders of modern food processing. When tours were introduced in the 1930s, visitors flocked to see white-coated groceteria staff show off such innovations as a machine that cut, weighed and packaged butter, or to admire the on-site recreation facilities for employees, including a bowling alley, billiard tables and social areas. After Loblaw moved its business offices to a new tower uptown, in 1976, the building was largely abandoned, looking all the more forlorn and anachronistic on its corner as the city changed and grew vertically around it. But this change is what has breathed new life into the building’s potential. Thousands of people now occupy new condo towers in the area, yet the neighbourhood lacks for street-level bustle; a major grocer and retail options would do much to help better knit the area together. Reviving the groceteria, however, will be a painstaking process. To address heritage concerns and faithfully preserve the south and western facades, the walls are being removed by hand – each brick surveyed, catalogued and cleaned – then stored before final demolition, rather than braced with steel supports and kept

in situ. Once the condo towers and skeleton of the new retail space are completed, masons will reconstruct the old walls brick by brick. “We’re digging a deep, 3.5-acre hole around the Gardiner Expressway, where its columns are anchored into the ground, and there’s a culvert in place,” says Grossi. “We know it sits roughly over the remains of an old wharf. If we find things while excavating, then what happens next? There are so many more technical issues than with most sites. Almost every department at City Hall had to weigh in on this.” One of those constraints could be made into a virtue based on how West Block hopes to incorporate the Gardiner into the site’s design, treating it more as a canvas than as an impediment. Increasingly, Torontonians are learning to creatively use the spaces beneath the aging expressway, and at West Block there are likewise plans to create a tiered, public area resembling an amphitheatre. With the Gardiner as a kind of industrial-sized awning, its underside illuminated with a light-based art installation, the area could host events or simply serve as an iconic local gathering spot. Grossi also recognizes the advantages of West Block’s proximity to Billy Bishop. When the project is completed in the spring of 2019, he believes that it will offer travellers passing through the airport a reason to stop in the West Block community, not just hop in and out of a cab. “Right now at one end of the tunnel, there’s this great, convenient airport,” says Grossi. “Now, in this beautiful heritage building at the other end, we can give people a high-quality experience of Toronto right when they get off the plane.” • --

La rénovation du complexe sera toutefois une entreprise délicate. Afin de respecter le bâtiment, et pour préserver les façades sud et ouest, les murs sont démolis à la main et chaque brique est cataloguée et nettoyée avant d’être stockée. Cette solution ayant été préférée aux étais métalliques qui supportent habituellement les façades. Une fois les tours de condos et la structure du nouveau complexe en place, les maçons reconstruiront les vieux murs brique par brique. « Nous avons creusé un trou de 3,5 acres autour de l’autoroute Gardiner, où les colonnes seront ancrées dans le sol et nous y avons trouvé un caniveau, dit Grossi. Nous savons qu’il occupe en gros l’emplacement d’un ancien quai. Que se passera-t-il si nous trouvons des choses en creusant? Les questions techniques sont bien plus nombreuses que pour un site standard. Presque tous les départements de la municipalité ont leur mot à dire. » À West Block, l’une de ces contraintes pourrait être mise à profit pour incorporer la Gardiner dans le design du site, en la traitant comme une toile de fond plutôt que comme un obstacle. Les Torontois ont dû apprendre à utiliser de manière inventive les espaces sous la voie rapide et, à West Block, il existe un projet d’espace public semblable à un amphithéâtre. La Gardiner serait une sorte d’auvent géant dont le dessous sera égayé par une installation artistique lumineuse. L’endroit pourrait accueillir des événements ou devenir un lieu de rassemblement emblématique. Grossi reconnaît aussi les avantages de la proximité de Billy Bishop. Lorsque le projet sera livré, au printemps 2019, il pense qu’il donnera aux voyageurs en transit une raison de s’arrêter dans la communauté West Block, au lieu de se contenter de sauter dans un taxi. « À un bout du tunnel, il y a déjà un aéroport très pratique, dit Grossi. Fire and Ice In Vermont’s Upper Valley, the pace might be slower, but the opportunities for adventure are abundant. Dans l’Upper Valley au Vermont, la vie a beau être tranquille, les occasions pour l’aventure ne manquent pas.

While Vermont is justifiably celebrated for its downhill skiing – Stowe, Jay Peak and Killington are all classic powderhound destinations – travellers seeking less adrenalin-fuelled adventure would do well to head to the state’s Upper Valley region. An hour and a half southeast of Burlington by car, there certainly is skiing here, but the area is also home to some of Vermont’s most remarkable cuisine, culture and natural beauty. It’s worth the (exceedingly scenic) drive.

Tucked in the western corner of the valley, Woodstock is the perfect place to settle for the weekend. Not to be confused with the tiedyed eponymous town in New York State, and described by National Geographic as one of “America’s most picturesque villages,” this impossibly charming hamlet of 3,500 permanent residents was incorporated in 1837. A surehanded historical society has preserved the village’s Greek Revival and Romanesque architecture, and an influx of wealthy Bostonians and New Yorkers with second homes in the region has given it an exclusive, prosperous air. The complete absence of retail chains in downtown Woodstock helps it maintain a lost-in-time allure; in their place you’ll find Vermont’s oldest independent bookstore and a clutch of similarly beguiling boutiques and restaurants. Before exploring the village, however, secure a room near its very centre, at the Woodstock Inn and Resort. The property has been home to an inn since 1793, but that structure and a subsequent building were replaced in 1969 by the current facility, built by tycoon and conservationist Laurance Rockefeller. The sprawling Woodstock now has 142 guest rooms, two restaurants, a lively games room, a fitness facility and pool, a golf course (with cross-country and snowshoeing trails in winter) and an extraordinary spa. The inn’s true centrepiece is the enormous lobby fireplace, about eight feet wide. Staff put the first sapling-size log on at 6:30 in the morning, and the flames will still be flickering by the time you head to bed. For even more private coziness, get a room in the more recently constructed Tavern 24

It was built in 1992, and 19 of its rooms have working, wood-burning fireplaces. “The beauty of this resort is that it sits right in town,” says Courtney Lowe, the Woodstock’s director of sales and marketing. “You can walk to everything.” This is largely true. Take a stroll down to Woodstock’s two main retail strips, Elm and Central Streets, just a couple minutes away, and you’ll find all manner of craft and clothing stores, several cafés, taverns and galleries. Downtown’s most alluring shop, however, has to be its oldest: F.H. Gillingham’s General Store. Established in 1886, the store, in some respects, feels like it has never left the 19th century. It still carries almost everything under the sun, and its 8,000 square feet and jam-packed warren of rooms reveal themselves to the visitor like a retail Russian nesting doll – children’s toys are shelved next to wine (some of the best liquor deals in town, in fact), groceries next to touristy tchotchkes. Pick up the requisite Vermont cheese and maple syrup here, and don’t forget to say hello to Ada, the friendly tabby who supervises the front cash register. While there are several appealing places to eat downtown – the Mon Vert Café is probably the best – locals love to lunch at the Woodstock Farmers’ Market. A short drive along US Route 4, this 30-year-old grocery store-cum-lunch counter is stocked to the rafters with fresh produce and other provisions. Its kitchen turns out hearty sandwiches, soups and salads (the lobster rolls and cheddar soup are favourites), and keeps a deli case full of prepared meals for potential winter picnics. The market was devastated by Hurricane Irene in 2011, but its proprietors and staff (there are 50) managed to rebuild and reopen within three months – a testament to its place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike. After lunch, keep heading west until you arrive at Farmhouse Pottery. If Gillingham’s represents a kind of timelessness, Farmhouse provides a glimpse of the new Woodstock, where young artisans, craftspeople and restaurateurs, often transplanted from cities along the East Coast, are delivering new twists on the region’s traditions. In Woodstock for just two years and owned by the husband-and-wife team James and Zoe Zilian, Farmhouse produces an assortment of stone-

ware – sauce boats, dog bowls, olive oil bottles – in a large, open workshop that adjoins its beautifully appointed shop. Those hand-hewn pieces, a serene palette of creams and tans, are complemented by similarly elegant enamelware, clothing and furniture manufactured throughout New England. “We’re as authentic as it gets,” James says. “This is Vermont’s new farm-to-table aesthetic.” Dart back to the Woodstock Inn and get your warmest clothes before heading out of town a bit. About 20 minutes away by car, in the town of Windsor, is Artisans Park, an alluring assortment of shops and eateries flanked by a whimsical sculpture park called the Path of Life Garden. Here, you’ll find Great River Outfitters, an outdoor adventure outfitting company that offers all manner of year-round activities, from kayaking to sleigh rides. Its most romantic adventure, however, might be the moonlight dogsled tour. Taking place, naturally, just as the sun sets (in the early winter months, around five o’clock), this 45-minute excursion runs along a trail that wends through the hushed Path of Life and surrounding fields. A team of huskies (on our trip, led by an 11-year-old named Anakin) travels at a pace of about 10 miles per hour over the ice and snow, illuminated only by a pale moon (and occasionally the musher’s headlamp). The huskies are an affable, exuberant bunch. “They’re individuals, with their own personalities and feelings,” says Craig Carmody, owner of Great River. “They’re not dogs; they’re athletes.” It’s a thrilling ride, but it can also be a chilly one. Fortunately, across the parking lot from Great River is Harpoon Brewery, the perfect place to warm up and grab an early dinner. The renowned Boston-based microbrewery opened this facility in the year 2000 (purchasing the $9 million plant from the bankrupt Catamount Brewery for just $900,000), and, like its sister spot in 26

Boston’s Seaport District, it’s an unpretentious, merry place. Not surprisingly, another large wood-burning fireplace adorns its cavernous dining room; snag a table near there while you sample a couple of Harpoon’s signature brews. The familiar pub grub menu nods to local bakeries and butchers. Before heading back to Woodstock, pick up a bottle or two of the limited-run 100 Barrel Series to enjoy in your room. Assuming the dogsledding hasn’t sated your desire for outdoor fun, start your second day by briskly snowshoeing through the nearby MarshBillings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, the state’s first national park. Pick up a pair of snowshoes at the inn’s fitness complex, which is home to the Tubbs Snowshoes Adventure Center, and take a short drive to the park. About 30 kilometres (19 miles) of trails (former carriage roads) are available in the winter, offering a range of difficulty. No matter your experience level, or how high you climb, the entire park is a wonderland of sugar maples, hemlocks and animal life. Keep quiet, and keep your eyes open, and you may see foxes, fisher cats, whitetail deer, even a bobcat. After a couple of hours of trekking, you’ll be primed for the resort’s spa. Si le traîneau à chiens n’a pas satisfait votre soif d’aventure en plein air, commencez votre deuxième journée par une promenade revigorante en raquettes dans le parc national historique de Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller, le plus ancien de l’État. Prenez vos raquettes au centre de remise en forme de l’auberge, qui héberge le Tubbs Snowshoes Adventure Center, et faites le court trajet en voiture jusqu’au parc. Une trentaine de kilomètres de chemins (anciennes routes forestières), de difficultés variées, sont ouvertes en hiver. Quel que soit votre niveau, ou l’altitude que vous affronterez, l’endroit est un pays des merveilles avec ses érables, ses pruches et sa faune. Faites-vous discrets et ouvrez l’œil pour apercevoir renards, martres pêcheuses, cerfs de Virginie ou lynx roux. 27

(to the tune of $11 million), it’s an oasis of Vermont quarried white marble and abundant natural light. Wood-burning Shaker stoves provide warmth throughout the spa’s common rooms, and the four-season outdoor courtyard features yet another fireplace, a Scandinavian cedar sauna and a whirlpool. Ten rooms on the second floor are used for body treatments – the standard massage, scrub and wrap varieties – but seasonal treatments highlight local herbal extracts, oils and unguents (think maple syrup). While the spa serves snacks and beverages, don’t fill up too much there. The headquarters of King Arthur Flour, America’s oldest flour company, is just a half-hour drive away, in Norwich. A baker’s (and bread lover’s) utopia, the post-andbeam building, built in 1995 and called Camelot, houses an education centre, an enormous retail shop, a sun-dappled café and, of course, a fully functioning bakery. The smell of freshly baked bread permeates the entire complex (even the bathrooms). The café’s menu includes several different sandwich options, but the simplest is best – a still-warm baguette with a pot of Vermont blueberry jam and a cup of hot chocolate (help yourself to the handcrafted, vanilla-scented marshmallows) could be the coziest lunch you’ll ever enjoy. No trip to the area would be complete, however, without at least one meal at Worthy Kitchen. Only two years old, it’s already a Woodstock institution. So after another rest at the inn (maybe a quick nap by the lobby hearth), head to the east side of the village and find a table. (Get there early, as no reservations are taken and it fills up fast.) Worthy bills itself as a “craft beer and farm diner,” but the raucous, amiable vibe might put you in mind of a sports bar run by Danny Meyer. With no table service, guests line up at the counter to order from a frequently changing menu of gourmet comfort food – everything from tacos to fried chicken – with ingredients sourced as locally as possible. The hamburger buns, naturally, are made with flour from King Arthur Flour. Strong regional craft beer is also a specialty –

Après votre randonnée, vous serez prêts pour le spa du complexe. Construit en 2010 (pour un coût de 11 millions de dollars) c’est une oasis en marbre blanc du Vermont, baignée d’une lumière naturelle. Des poêles à bois Shaker créent une douce chaleur dans les espaces communs du spa et la cour toutes saisons est aussi dotée de sa cheminée, d’un sauna en cèdre scandinave et d’un bain tourbillon. Utopie des boulangers (et des amateurs de pain), le bâtiment en bois datant de 1995 baptisé Camelot, comprend un centre de formation, une vaste boutique, un café et, bien entendu, une boulangerie en état de marche. L’odeur du pain frais imprègne tout le complexe (même les toilettes). Le menu du café propose un choix de sandwichs, mais le meilleur reste encore une simple baguette encore chaude avec un pot de confiture de bleuets du Vermont et une tasse de chocolat chaud (la guimauve à la vanille maison est à volonté). Un dîner réconfortant et délicieux. Votre séjour ne serait sans doute pas complet sans un dernier repas à Worthy Kitchen. Ouvert il y a deux ans, c’est déjà une institution de Woodstock. Après une dernière pause à l’auberge (peut-être une courte sieste devant la cheminée du foyer), mettez le cap sur l’est du village et trouvez une table. (Arrivez tôt car on ne prend pas les réservations). Worthy annonce « bière artisanale et repas fermier », mais l’ambiance animée vous rappellera peut-être les bars sportifs Danny Meyer. Il faut faire la file au comptoir pour commander et le menu qui change fréquemment propose des plats réconfortants – des tacos et du poulet frit – avec des ingrédients locaux dans la mesure du possible. Krista Pollett’s cozy wine bar (it can accommodate 18 at a pinch) in the Beaches neighbourhood is heavy on both. The corks not only pop from the bottles shipped in from small Ontario wineries but also feature heavily in cork checker games and Pollett’s own artworks that line the walls, while the platters bear various regionally produced cheeses (Niagara Gold, Avonlea cheddar) and meats (beef jerky, elk salami). Toronto The Edible Woman, by Margaret Atwood Not the latest food fad in Toronto’s culinary scene but a prescient take by Atwood, in her 1969 debut novel, on consumerism and the gender wars. In a key scene, Atwood’s heroine, Marian, bakes a pink cake in the shape of a woman and dares her boyfriend to eat it. The name of Ainsley, Marian’s roommate, was inspired by the all-female Annesley Hall residence building at the University of Toronto, where Atwood once lived. The first chapter introduces the town’s most important structures, the prison and the scaffold, rather than the Ivy League colleges and museums for which Boston is now known. Marie A Good Place to Come From, by Morley Torgov That “good place” is Sault itself, which Torgov captures in a comic memoir that spans from the onset of the Depression to the outbreak of the Second World War. My story starts in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I was born and raised. I did my first semester of university in Rio, and then my husband and I decided to come to Canada to sharpen our English language skills. We fell in love with Toronto and resolved to stay. I got a place at Ryerson University, graduated with a double major in marketing and finance, then worked in the marketing department of the telecom company Bell before joining Porter as a Junior Analyst two years ago. Much as my career started in marketing, perhaps I was destined to join Porter. My grandfather was an aircraft mechanic, my uncle an aerobatic pilot for the Brazilian Air Force – the equivalent of a Canadian Snowbird – my aunt a flight attendant and my father an Air Force administrator. I’d like to stay working for Porter, definitely. If the airline’s expansion plans are approved, there will be such great opportunity to progress within the company. I feel like my work is valued here. There are two main aspects to my role as a Financial Analyst. The first is planning: both short-term, involving the development of the following year’s budget, and long-term, involving forecasting for the years ahead and analysis of how potential scenarios might impact profitability. The second main aspect of my job is analytical, looking at variances on costs from year to year while providing financial information to the management team to support their decisions. Every decision made within a company has a financial impact, and my job is to help assess what this impact will be. The Financial Planning team is small – just me and my manager, the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis. We work in the admin office at Billy Bishop, close to the hangars. What I like most about my job is the knowledge that what I do is meaningful. I recently worked on the route profitability analysis for the new Pittsburgh station, for example, which was a part of Porter’s decision to extend its service to this new destination. Managing the budget process can be challenging, because of the vast amount of information we receive. We have to act fast, work to tight deadlines, prioritize and be extremely attentive at all times. And much as budget season can be an information overload, I also enjoy it, because it’s a time during which I interact closely with the management team and participate in executive meetings. It’s interesting to learn how the top-level staff’s thought processes work – how they think, what questions they ask. The focus of my work changes constantly, depending on what current issues the wider company is engaging with. One day I might be looking at fuel prices in the morning, 52

Mon histoire commence à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil, où je suis née et où j’ai grandi. Nous avons été séduits par Toronto et nous sommes restés. J’ai pu m’inscrire à l’Université Ryerson, d’où je suis sortie diplomée en marketing et finance. Ensuite j’ai travaillé au service marketing de l’entreprise de téléphonie Bell avant d’intégrer Porter comme assistante analyste il y a deux ans. Même si j’ai commencé dans le marketing, j’étais prédestinée à travailler chez Porter. Mon grand-père était mécanicien d’avions, mon oncle pilote de voltige dans l’armée de l’air brésilienne – l’équivalent des Snowbirds canadiens – ma tante était hôtesse et mon père administrateur dans l’armée de l’air. analyzing route profitability in the mid-morning and forecasting landing fees in the afternoon. My work is very dynamic. Every day is different from the last. I travel as much as I can on Porter. Flying out of Billy Bishop is very convenient for me, as I live on the waterfront, just 15 minutes’ walking distance from the airport. I love that element of travel – of discovering the unknown, seeing new architecture, experiencing different types of culture and cuisine. I have been to all of Porter’s U.S. destinations, but Newark is my favourite. I could visit New York City a million times, and every time it would reveal itself in different, unexpected ways. I’m always proud to fly Porter, especially when happy customers tell you to keep doing what you’re doing. It’s a good feeling to be part of that Porter experience.

Porter is big on team building, so there are plenty of opportunities to get to know your co-workers within Billy Bishop. We recently had a staff day at this place called Escape Games, in Toronto, where they recreate a Mission: Impossible-type scenario and challenge you to solve different puzzles in order to get back out. I’m an analyst, so I do love a puzzle, and the outing was a lot of fun. I’m a very active person, often running, cycling or weight training. My greatest passion, however, is ballet. I started ballet two years ago, around the same time I started working for Porter, and it has taught me to be disciplined, dedicated and focused. Useful, too, for my career! •
