Sweet Williamsburg It’s act II for Williamsburg – the artsy, hipster, bohemian district in the historic borough of Brooklyn, New York. Aided by affordable rentals and easy access to Manhattan, it emerged as the city’s most desirable destination for cutting-edge locals and visitors. Over the past few years, however, a “new” Williamsburg has taken root. Anchored around the northern sector of the ’hood, close to Greenpoint and fronting the East River, North Williamsburg is more elegant and more upscale than its southern sibling. Australia’s growing coffee culture is right at home in Williamsburg, where the Sydney-based Toby’s Estate has opened a café and retail outpost set in a former meat-packing factory. At one end, the shop offers premium java brewing products along with space for coffee appreciation classes. At the other, one of the first-ever Strada espresso machines in the United States turns out perfectly prepared coffee drinks crafted from precisely roasted beans sourced from Rwanda to Brazil. Accessories design firm Baggu perfectly captures North Williamsburg’s new entrepreneurial spirit. Based in the neighbourhood, the company specializes in bright totes crafted from recycled and reusable fabrics. Here, at its Williamsburg retail outpost, Baggu showcases the best of its more than two dozen products. Each item is made from a single piece of fabric to avoid wastage, and while most are crafted from cotton and nylon, owner Emily Sugihara has recently launched a chic collection of leather bags made in the United States from Argentine leather. In a previous life, the 73-room red-brick Wythe Hotel was a sprawling barrel factory before pioneering restaurateur Andrew Tarlow and architect Morris Adjmi got their hands on it. Working with the building’s existing aesthetic, Adjmi’s interiors feature polished concrete floors, sturdy wooden-beam walls and furniture crafted from repurposed lumber. The hotel’s parlourlike restaurant, Reynard, serves meat carved by an on-site butcher. The Wythe’s real calling card, however, is its rooftop lounge, which heaves with some of the smartest-dressed cocktail lovers in all of New York. I love the excitement of living in a neighbourhood that’s constantly mixing it up – where there are bearded banjo buskers, outdoor movies in the park and random sidewalk sales. The choice of activities and amenities is something I never seem to get over. J’adore vivre dans un voisinage où tout se mélange sans cesse. On y voit des joueurs de banjo barbus ambulants, du cinéma en plein air dans le parc et des brocantes sur le trottoir. Je ne me lasserai jamais de la multitude d’activités et de boutiques.

Even with all its energy, Williamsburg feels like a peaceful sanctuary from Manhattan’s endless temptations. There’s nothing like admiring the skyline from the Williamsburg waterfront. And no matter what I want to eat, I can find it in Williamsburg without having to cross the bridge and enter the noisy city. Williamsburg, you could say, is the ultimate urban compromise. Malgré toute l’énergie qui l’habite, Williamsburg est comme un sanctuaire paisible comparé aux tentations infinies de Manhattan. Rien ne vaut la vue sur les gratte-ciels depuis la berge de Williamsburg. Et je trouve toujours ce que je veux manger sans avoir à traverser le pont pour me rendre dans la ville bruyante. I’ve been living in Williamsburg for almost eight years now, and I love how the neighbourhood has evolved into such an exciting dining epicentre. It’s amazing how it now offers some of the best food in all of New York City – at nearly every hour of the day. I guess you could say I’ve been spoiled, because when it comes to eating, leaving Williamsburg is now very hard to do. J’habite à Williamsburg depuis huit ans et j’adore la transformation du voisinage en épicentre fascinant d’une cuisine délicieuse. C’est fou de constater que nous avons désormais des tables parmi les meilleures de tout New York – à presque toute heure du jour et de la nuit. Hoop Dreams Andre Levingston has loved the game of basketball since he was three years old. So when the chance to own his own team and run his own league in Canada arose, it was a slam dunk. I’m the president and CEO of the National Basketball League of Canada and the owner of the Halifax Rainmen. Between the two jobs, I don’t have an off-season. Part of my mission is to try to grow the game of basketball in Canada, and that’s why I was instrumental in forming the NBL Canada in 2011. After all, it was invented here, and statistics show that it has surpassed both hockey and soccer in terms of youth participation. Hockey remains the national obsession, but we’re developing basketball at a grassroots level. If you drive down a street of 10 houses, I guarantee that at least six, if not more, will have hoops outside.

Je suis le PDG de la Ligue nationale de basket-ball du Canada et le propriétaire des Halifax Rainmen. Entre les deux activités, je n’ai pas vraiment d’inter-saison. Une partie de ma mission est de faire croître le sport du basket-ball au Canada. Aussi, j’ai joué un rôle crucial en lançant la LNB en 2011. Après tout, c’est nous qui avons inventé ce sport et les chiffres montrent qu’il a dépassé le football et le hockey en termes de participation des jeunes. Le hockey reste une obsession nationale, mais nous développons le basket à sa base. Si vous passez dans une rue qui compte dix maisons, je vous parie qu’au moins six auront un panier de basket.

Cela fait sept ans que je suis propriétaire des Rainmen. La saison dernière n’a pas été la meilleure pour notre équipe car nous avons manqué la qualification pour les séries éliminatoires. Mais il y aura toujours des hauts et des bas. Aujourd’hui, nous repartons de plus belle et nous travaillons sur l’esprit d’équipe. J’envoie mes joueurs visiter des écoles et faire des emplettes pour l’Armée du Salut. Je leur dis qu’être un bon citoyen et un bon exemple va de pair avec être un bon joueur.

I’ve owned the Rainmen for seven years now. Last season wasn’t the best for the team – we missed the playoffs – but ups and downs are part of the deal. Now we’re regrouping, and team building is a big part of that. I send my players to visit schools and to pack groceries for the Salvation Army. I tell them that being good men and role models goes hand in hand with being good players.

J’adore le basket depuis l’âge de 3 ans et à mes yeux ce sera toujours plus qu’un simple sport. C’est un véritable symbole d’espoir. Mon premier mentor s’appelait Ronnie Vaughn, un gars du voisinage qui jouait au terrain de basket du coin et qui m’a fait comprendre qu’un sportif ne boit pas et ne fume pas. Aujourd’hui, j’ai 48 ans et je n’ai jamais fumé ni bu de ma vie et je m’entraîne tous les jours.

I’m from inner-city Detroit, where there weren’t a lot of options for young kids. My father wasn’t around – though he has come back into my life, and I love him to death now – and my mother had to raise three kids on her own. There wasn’t always enough food to go round or money for heating or Christmas gifts. But I fell in love with basketball when I was three years old, and to me it has always been more than a game – it is a beacon of hope. My first mentor was Ronnie Vaughn, a local guy who shot hoops, and he told me that athletes don’t drink or smoke. I’m 48 years old now, and I’ve never had a smoke or a drink, and I still work out every day. I never made the NBA, but I got a degree in child psychology in California, and I went back to Detroit to teach at an inner-city academy. There were boys being lost to the streets, to violence, to jail, and I tried to be a surrogate father to a lot of them. I adopted my second son, Stephon, when he was in the sixth grade. I raised him, and he’s an amazing young man today. After six years of teaching, I went into business. I had no formal training, and no one in my family was an entrepreneur. I learned through trial and error, running a little phone marketing company on the side to make some extra money. That’s how I came to Canada – I moved to Toronto in 1999 to try my luck, when Ontario deregulated its phone industry. I’ve run restaurants and limousine companies and high-end car detailing outfits. I became excited about business, and I really enjoyed working for myself. So when the opportunity to own a professional basketball team came about, I didn’t think twice about it. All my interests came together – sport, business and mentorship. I spend a lot of time on airplanes. One of my responsibilities is to expand the league, so I’m travelling all over the place. I absolutely feel like I need a private plane, but Porter is the next best thing. It’s so convenient, and the customer service is unmatched. It reminds me of our business – it’s growing, and it’s grassroots, involved in the communities where it does business. The Rainmen, too, travel Porter. In fact, Porter does an excellent job of accommodating all the NBL clubs, which makes our league even more professional. I still play every now and then, though not as much as I used to. If I’d become a professional player, my life would have taken a different course. I love what I do, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Every time I see these young players becoming better guys, inspiring the kids who are cheering for us in our arena, and when I see what this club means to the community, it’s worth everything I’ve put into it.

Je n’ai jamais joué pour la NBA, mais j’ai obtenu un diplôme en psychologie de l’enfance en Californie. Je suis retourné à Detroit pour enseigner dans une école de banlieue. Il y avait des garçons qui vivaient dans la rue, qui étaient violents et allaient en prison. J’ai essayé d’être un père adoptif pour beaucoup d’entre eux. J’ai été gérant de restaurants et de locations de limousines et d’esthétique automobile haut de gamme. Les affaires me passionnent et j’apprécie mon indépendance. Aussi, lorsque la chance s’est présentée d’acquérir une équipe de basket professionnelle, j’ai sauté sur l’occasion. Toutes mes passions réunies en une activité : sport, affaires et mentorat. Je passe beaucoup de temps en avion. Une de mes responsabilités est de faire grandir la ligue, ce qui me conduit à beaucoup voyager. J’aurais bien besoin d’un avion privé, mais à défaut, il y a Porter. C’est si pratique et le service à la clientèle est inégalé. Cela me rappelle mon entreprise – les lignes Porter grandissent, s’occupent de la base et s’impliquent dans les communautés où elles font des affaires. Les Rainmen volent également avec Porter. Il faut dire que Porter a réussi à assurer le transport de tous les clubs de la LNB ce qui accroit le côté professionnel de notre ligue. Il m’arrive encore de jouer de temps en temps, mais pas autant qu’autrefois. Si j’étais passé professionnel, ma vie aurait sans doute été bien différente. Mais j’aime ce que je fais et je ne changerais d’activité pour rien au monde. À chaque fois que je vois un jeune joueur progresser sur le plan personnel, être un bon exemple pour les gamins qui viennent nous acclamer quand nous jouons, et quand je vois ce que ce club signifie pour la communauté, je me dis que cela récompense tous les efforts que j’ai fournis. 13

Quay to Success Grand plans are afoot for Toronto’s unique Queen’s Quay area, and the Waterfront BIA is on hand to ensure that local businesses boom. Federico García Lorca, the early 20th-century Spanish poet, once called Barcelona’s La Rambla “the only street in the world which I wish would never end.” Would he ever say the same about Queen’s Quay, the road that runs along Lake Ontario’s shore at the south end of Toronto? “I don’t know about that,” says Kevin Currie, “but the waterfront is certainly the jewel of the city.” Currie, who opened his Queen’s Quay bicycle rental shop, Wheel Excitement, in 1993, and who founded the Waterfront

Business Improvement Association (BIA) in 2004, won’t speculate on Lorca’s reaction, but he says that this much is certain: Queen’s Quay’s $110 million regeneration, aimed at widening the south sidewalk between Bay Street and Yo-Yo Ma Lane, west of Spadina Avenue, will only bolster the area’s appeal. Inspired by the grand boulevards of Europe, as well as cities like Chicago and New York, the promenade will be seven metres (23 feet) wide in places, replacing two lanes of traffic. More than 240 trees will be planted; two-way cycle lanes will connect to the 56-kilometre-long (35-mile-long) Martin Goodman Trail; and a granite sidewalk, featuring a maple leaf mosaic, will be laid. And it will all be done in time for the Parapan American Games, in the summer of 2015. For Carol Jolly, executive director of the Waterfront BIA, summer 2015 can’t come soon enough. Jolly’s mandate is to promote businesses in the area, which spans from Yonge Street to Bathurst Street, and from the water to Lake Shore Boulevard. The construction has not made her job easier. Still, thanks to a series of creative programs, the BIA has kept the waterfront booming. “Our programs have been innovative,” says Jolly, “and we’ve been lucky; they’ve all been very successful.” A case in point is the Singing Ambassadors program. “It could have fallen flat on its face, because it’s not just hiring students to hand out brochures; it’s hiring singers to sing in four-part harmony,” says Jolly. “If any moving part doesn’t work, it falls apart.” The ambassadors were a sensation, delighting visitors with their roving, a cappella performances of summer classics. One singer even earned a spot in a SummerWorks Theatre Festival production while on the job. (The BIA lent him out. “You can’t stop these people from living their dreams,” says Jolly.) 16

Other successful BIA programs include the My Waterfront Photo Contest, which culminates in an exhibition of visitors’ photographs, and Gangways Open – part of the city-wide Doors Open event – during which the public explores docked boats. To boost the quiet winter months, the BIA launched Winterfest, featuring pre-Christmas cruises with Santa Claus, and Family Day weekend activities in February, featuring skating, crafts and pet performances at the PawsWay event centre. The area’s biggest draw is the tall ships, part of the triennial Redpath Waterfront Festival. Getting that project off the ground was almost a full-time venture, says Jolly, adding that an event production company now handles it. “We’re a marketing machine, not producers,” she says. Fundamentally, then, the BIA is focused on communication – often simply promoting the Waterfront name, itself just four years old. Until the ad agency (and BIA member) MacLaren McCann renamed the organization, it was the Queen’s Quay Harbourfront BIA, or QQHBIA – pronounced “Quibeeah.” “It was a mouthful,” says Jolly, who joined shortly after the rebranding. It was a key time in the BIA’s history. By then, Currie says, “We’d grown, and we needed better ways for businesses to have input into local development.” Jolly was an ideal fit: after running First Night Toronto, Harbourfront Centre’s New Year’s Eve event, she launched Yonge-Dundas Square. She was a specialist, she says, “in startups and cleanups.” Her local knowledge was an asset, too. The waterfront is unique: it’s among Toronto’s most popular tourist hubs – second only to the Eaton Centre – and it’s a densely populated

residential neighbourhood. “There is no typical main street, with a butcher and a baker,” says Jolly. “We’re a vertical neighbourhood, which is so different.” The area’s face is changing, too, as young condo-dwellers start families – and stay put. The neighbourhood is slowly evolving to meet the community’s needs, but Jolly says that regular engagement with city planners is still crucial. “We’re the voice of business, saying, ‘Don’t forget to put things in at ground level. We can’t have glass canyons,’” she says. “More and more the city is getting it.” Certainly the regeneration scheme seems to indicate that the city, which is funding the project along with the provincial and federal governments, is starting to get it. Already, the buzz for 2015 is building. This summer, Amsterdam BrewHouse staked its territory, opening an 800-seat bar and restaurant in a converted warehouse on the water. The Radisson Admiral Hotel is developing plans for a licensed outdoor lobby to spill out on the promenade. And the continued growth of Porter Airlines is an ongoing boon, as passengers heading to and from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport can explore the neighbourhood. “Porter is an important part of the community,” says Jolly. “It’s bringing a lot of people into the area.” By 2015, Porter’s hub won’t merely be minutes from the buzz of the city; it will be right in the thick of it. The promenade, which will begin near the airport, will radically transform the neighbourhood. “By putting in what is basically a linear park, we’re really going to change the way the waterfront is used,” says Jolly. The project is running on schedule, and plans for a June 2015 grand opening event are already under way. Jolly even has the name: Party on the Promenade. The promenade will be about 1.5 kilometres (one mile) long; slightly longer, as it happens, than La Rambla. Replicating Barcelona’s historic stretch would be ambitious – Miró murals and centuries-old opera houses are in short supply in Canada – but that, of course, is not the point. The point, rather, is to create a thriving, pedestriancentric promenade so welcoming – so vibrant, so colourful – that visitors and locals alike will stroll along and think to themselves: I wish this street would never end.

Le voisinage évolue petit à petit pour répondre aux besoins de la communauté, mais Jolly souligne l’importance d’une collaboration continue avec les urbanistes. « Nous sommes la voix des entreprises qui dit ‘N’oubliez pas les fondations. Des canyons en verre sont inutiles.’ Mais la ville saisit de mieux en mieux ces fondamentaux. » Le programme de régénération semble en effet indiquer que la ville, qui le finance avec le gouvernement provincial et fédéral, a compris. Le compte à rebours pour 2015 a déjà commencé. Cet été, l’Amsterdam BrewHouse a marqué les esprits en inaugurant un bar-restaurant de 800 couverts dans un ancien entrepôt au bord de l’eau. L’hôtel Radisson Admiral a un projet pour un lobby-bar en plein air donnant sur la promenade. Et la croissance continue de Porter Airlines est un bonus car les passagers peuvent explorer le voisinage en chemin vers l’aéroport de Billy Bishop. « Porter est un membre important de cette communauté, dit Jolly. Il amène du monde dans ce secteur. » D’ici 2015, Porter ne sera plus à quelques minutes de l’animation de la ville, il sera en plein cœur. La promenade, qui commencera près de l’aéroport, va bouleverser le voisinage. « En construisant un parc linéaire, nous allons vraiment changer l’usage qui est fait de ce littoral », dit Jolly. Le projet est dans les temps et l’on prépare déjà l’inauguration en juin 2015. Jolly a même un nom pour cet événement : Party on the Promenade. La promenade fera environ 1,5 km de long, soit un peu plus que la Rambla… Reproduire cette vénérable artère de Barcelone serait ambitieux – les fresques de Miró et les opéras centenaires sont plutôt rares au Canada, mais là n’est pas la question. Il s’agit bel et bien de créer une promenade prospère pour les piétons, qui soit si accueillante, si animée et haute en couleur que les visiteurs et résidents s’y promènent en se disant : « Si seulement elle pouvait ne jamais finir. »

Massif Attack In the Charlevoix region, stunning natural surroundings combine with an extraordinary range of outdoor and cultural activities. The region of Charlevoix, a 6,000-square-kilometre (2,300-square-mile) chunk of the Canadian Shield located about an hour’s drive north of Québec City, is staggeringly rich with history and tradition. The soul-stirring landscape – majestic mountains looming over a shimmering St. Lawrence River – was created some 350 million years ago when a huge meteorite collided with the earth. A bit more recently, Charlevoix’s largest town, La Malbaie, became Canada’s first resort destination when Scottish landowners began hosting

visitors in the second half of the 18th century. At the turn of the 20th century, the majestic 350-room Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu opened, attracting a steady stream of affluent Americans, and then, in 1988, UNESCO designated the region a World Biosphere Reserve. Over the centuries, Charlevoix has deservedly developed a global reputation for its natural beauty, artistic and gastronomic heritage and uncommon hospitality. In the past decade, however, even as this history has been lovingly preserved, Charlevoix has entered the 21st century aided by Daniel Gauthier and his redevelopment of Le Massif, the area’s ski mountain. In 2000 Gauthier sold his shares in Cirque du Soleil, which he co-founded, and purchased Le Massif, aiming to transform it into an environmentally sustainable, four-season operation. It has been a slow, careful process, but Gauthier has successfully converted what was once an uninspired facility into eastern Canada’s newest ski resort – and he has taken Charlevoix tourism to a whole new level. To experience Gauthier’s vision first-hand, book a room at Hôtel La Ferme in Baie-Saint-Paul. A one-of-a-kind luxury hotel that blends country charm with urban sophistication, it was built at the foot of the village on what was once the site of one of Canada’s largest wooden barns. That structure was destroyed by fire in 2007, but its design inspired the archipelago of handsome, minimalist buildings – all bedecked in Le Massif’s trademark grey-and-gold colour palette – that form La Ferme. Two main structures house three restaurants,

Puis, en 1988, l’Unesco a classé la région Réserve de Biosphère Mondiale. Au fil des siècles, Charlevoix a acquis une réputation mondiale méritée pour sa beauté naturelle et artistique, son patrimoine gastronomique et son hospitalité hors du commun. Lors de la dernière décennie, toutefois, et tout en préservant son admirable patrimoine historique, Charlevoix est entré dans le XXIe siècle grâce à Daniel Gauthier qui a redéveloppé le Massif, la station de ski de la région. The decor varies, but 95 percent of the hotel was built by artisans using local materials, and each of the 145 guest rooms features details rooted in the region’s rural heritage, such as driftwood lamps, tapestries fashioned from butter packaging and handwoven throws adorned with the star of Charlevoix motif. Reflecting Le Massif’s green values, the complex is heated with geothermal technology. After checking in, head to the mountain. In addition to buying the mountain, Gauthier commissioned and designed a luxurious tourist train that runs along the river, from Québec City to La Malbaie, with stops at both the mountain base and La Ferme. A separate train shuttles skiers and snowboarders directly from the hotel to the mountain. Since 2009 the mountain’s skiable area has expanded by about 30 percent; more than 50 epic trails plunge toward the St. Lawrence. Le Massif boasts the highest vertical drop – around 800 metres (about 2,625 feet) – east of the Rockies. But you don’t need to strap anything to your feet to have a good wintry time. This is also the first ski hill in North America to offer the sport of rodelling, which is basically extreme tobogganing. Sitting on a traditional handcrafted wooden sled, you can glide down the entire backside of the mountain, a journey of nearly eight kilometres (about 5 miles),

(Luge-style hammerhead sleds are also available, which you ride on your belly, and which can provide an even faster ride.) “You can’t stop smiling afterwards,” says Sarah Matthews, a Le Massif staff member. “It’s a thrill.” It can also be as strenuous as a day’s schussing. After a few hours on the mountain, soothe your sore muscles at Spa du Verger, at La Ferme. Surrounded by orchards and offering a river view, the steamy outdoor thermal pool provides cozy relaxation, while the adjoining cold-water pool offers a refreshing jolt. Inside, along with the requisite sauna and steam room, a suite of different treatments is available – from candle wax massages to maple sugar body treatments. For a different kind of après-ski amusement, head to the fireplace at Le Bercail, a deliciously cozy bar off the lobby, and order a Dominus Vobiscum Double, a strong, syrupy beer brewed by the award-winning Microbrasserie Charlevoix, located in Baie-Saint-Paul. Le Bercail offers a small card of pizzas and nibbles, but for a heartier meal, venture one floor up to Les Labours. The menus for both restaurants, as well as their overall design, were created by the chef David Forbes. Les Labours’s gleaming, open kitchen occupies

the centre of the room, and there you’ll find the 40-year-old Forbes dressed, like his staff, in baseball cap and work shirt. They look more like an indie rock band than a team of top toques. These ringside seats are best for watching Forbes work his magic with dishes like mushroom-and-truffle butter risotto and traditional tartiflette – a potato, onion and bacon casserole topped with Laiterie Charlevoix cheese. The menu changes every two weeks but is always, according to Forbes, “rustic and authentic.” The next day, rise early to explore some of Charlevoix’s other attractions. Baie-Saint-Paul is far more than a ski village, and for centuries its unique light and landscape have drawn Canadian artists. In addition to its charming shops, inns and restaurants, the town teems with art galleries (reportedly, more per capita than anywhere in the country). The Musée d’Art Contemporain de BaieSaint-Paul is a jewel in this crown. Inaugurated in 1992 on the former site of a cinema and recognized in 2008 as a museum, this elegant space hosts an annual residency in which 12 international artists spend a month in Baie-Saint-Paul creating new work; past participants have included art stars like Shary Boyle and Marc Séguin. “Baie-Saint-Paul has a long history of traditional painting,” says curator Johanne Vigneault, “but our mandate is to get people acquainted with and at ease with contemporary art.”

After the museum, get acquainted with the area’s equally important gastronomic heritage. Take a five-minute drive out of town and you’ll see where part of last night’s dinner originated. The Laiterie Charlevoix is along the Route des Saveurs, a circuit of sustainable farms, food producers and restaurants that spans the region (look for the orange signs emblazoned with a chef’s toque). The family-run Laiterie opened in 1948 and remains one of the area’s top dairies. It produces six cheeses, from mild cheddars to the prize-winning 1608, a rich, Oka-like variety made with Canadian cow’s milk. The dairy is especially notable for its state-of-the-art bio-energy and water treatment equipment: the methane created in the cheese-making process is captured to heat the entire facility, and all waste water is filtered through a tropical plant greenhouse before disposal. Less high-tech artifacts from the entire history of Canadian milk manufacturing – everything from butter churns to toys – are housed in a second-floor museum. If you have time to make only one stop on the route, the Laiterie’s shop is a good choice, as it also sells almost every other food product made in the region, from cider to sausages. It’s impossible to experience the breadth of Charlevoix in a single weekend, but for a flavour, follow the hilly highway north to La Malbaie. You’ll pass through candy-coloured villages, each with its own remarkable views (and art studios and food shops). Just before La Malbaie, turn toward the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu. The château presides over the St. Lawrence and possesses all the timeless luxury the Fairmont chain is known for, with a special emphasis on year-round

recreation and sport. In winter, cross-country ski trails criss-cross the immense golf course and farmland behind the hotel, but those same fields are equally suitable for snowmobiling. It’s such a popular activity, in fact, that the hotel has its own drive-in underground garage for the snowmobiles. Book your own tour in the multi-sport centre and a guide will take you on a backcountry outing that provides both exhilarating adventure – at certain points, you’ll hit 80 kilometres (about 50 miles) per hour – and natural beauty. After a couple of hours of fresh air, your appetite will certainly be back. Fortunately, Le Manoir Richelieu houses five different restaurants, from the casual Le Bellerive to the high-end Le Charlevoix. While each features its share of traditional fare – “There’s always a tourtière in Le Bellerive,” says executive sous-chef Robert Humphreys – a couple of years ago the hotel introduced Lifestyle Cuisine, a modern menu to accommodate vegetarians, diabetics and guests with other dietary concerns. The hotel’s head chef, Patrick Turcot, has also been actively improving the standards of the Route des Saveurs, with his own restaurants setting an example. “It’s making the food better,” Humphreys says. “It’s lighter, healthier cuisine now.” If you’re feeling too virtuous, after your meal, visit the adjacent Casino de Charlevoix. In a former life, the capacious, stylish building was a curling 30

A prime showcase for aspiring and mid-career Canadian artists, Studio 21 recently moved to a new location close to the waterfront, on the ground floor of a high-concept apartment building (look for the resplendent red glass balconies). A pop-up restaurant that popped up in various spots in Jamaica Plain has now more or less popped its pop-up clogs with a semi-permanent home in the North End. It offers three-, five- and seven-course tasting menus every night except Sundays and Mondays, priced from $45 to $75, and featuring seasonal ingredients. Previous highlights have included cucumber panna cotta and torched duck – carbonized Cayuga, perhaps? The wine list was recently given an award of excellence by Wine Spectator magazine, which is more than par for the course. Call to Attention The mission of call centre lead agent Caroline Duran is to create the highest level of satisfaction for each of Porter’s passengers. La mission de Caroline Duran, chef d’équipe au centre d’appel de Porter est de satisfaire au maximum les besoins de chaque passager.

I’m a lead agent in the call centre at Porter. If a passenger calls in with issues that need more time and attention, as opposed to just seeking general information, a call centre agent will connect him or her to us. Some of the issues we handle include processing reservation refunds; approving certain exceptions; preparing itineraries to be faxed or mailed to passengers; checking reservations with special requests, such as those of wheelchair passengers, unaccompanied minors or people with food allergies, to ensure that they receive the service requested; and updating call centre agents about flight delays. I’m also involved in Porter’s agent coaching programs.

The call centre is located in one of the hangars at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. There is an excellent view from our windows – we look out over the lake and can see the tour boats and the ferry going back and forth, and the planes taking off and landing. Usually there are four leads, one supervisor and one manager working a shift. It’s quite a closeknit team. There’s a real family atmosphere, with people helping each other out, which you totally appreciate if you’re having a full-out day. My shift is generally from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday, though sometimes I start at 5:30 a.m., when the call centre opens. My ultimate goal with a call is to make the customer as satisfied as I possibly can. We always try to accommodate customers’ requests or take their views into consideration, as long as they’re within the rules that we have to follow. I’ll take many calls a day, and each can last up to an hour, because I often discuss an issue in great detail with a customer. At the same time, we’re very sensitive

to holding times; we don’t want passengers waiting on hold for 10 minutes if an agent is checking something with us. We encourage the agent to reconnect with the passenger every two minutes or so to let him or her know that we’re still working on the case and to ask the passenger to please bear with us. To do my job, you need, first and foremost, multitasking skills. I may have up to six or seven agents instant-messaging questions to me at any given time while I’m also dealing with passengers on the phone. You have to be very patient and remain calm, and you have to be a very good listener. There are times, such as when a high volume of calls and requests comes in, that the job can get stressful. Luckily, I’m a naturally calm person. And there’s a lot of job satisfaction for me, because I’m actually in the business of problem solving. I’ve always liked helping people, and it makes me feel good when I hang up the phone and know that I was able to clear up an issue for someone. I studied tourism in college, and I’ve previously worked at a couple of other airline call centres, in both a leading and training capacity. I’ve been working at Porter for three years. I initially applied for a position as a customer service representative, but there were no openings for that at the time, so Porter offered me the call centre position. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a flight attendant. I remember getting on planes and staring at the stewardess, who seemed so glamorous and kind of exotic, and thinking, I really want to be that girl. I love being part of creating a great experience for our passengers, and I have found my passion in customer service. What I desire next at Porter is to use my call centre experience to become a customer service representative. How do I unwind? Well, I just bought a house, about an hour’s commute from the airport, and there’s plenty of unpacking and decorating to do there. Also, twice a week I take classes in Muay Thai, a kind of martial art that is similar to kick-boxing. I find that it really helps take any lingering stress away; it’s a real mind-body workout. For me, the next call I take is always another opportunity to help someone out, work through a problem or turn a negative situation into a positive one. If I can achieve that, it’s a job well done.

J’ai étudié le tourisme à l’université et j’ai travaillé dans d’autres centres d’appels de lignes aériennes comme responsable et formateur. Je suis chez Porter depuis trois ans. Au départ, j’ai postulé pour être préposée au service à la clientèle, mais il n’y avait pas de poste à l’époque, alors Porter m’a offert ce poste au centre d’appels. Lorsque j’étais petite, je voulais être hôtesse de l’air. Je me rappelle que je dévisageais les hôtesses quand je prenais l’avion. Elles me paraissaient si glamour et exotiques. C’est ce que je voulais faire. J’adore contribuer à la création d’une excellente expérience pour nos passagers et le service à la clientèle est ma vocation. Mon objectif suivant chez Porter est de mettre à profit mon expérience au centre d’appels et de devenir préposée à la clientèle. Mes loisirs ? Je viens d’acheter une maison, à environ une heure de l’aéroport et j’ai encore plein de rangement et la décoration à faire.
