The nights start to get longer, of course; the air begins to feel slightly sharper; and we ease ourselves out of vacation mode and return to our workplaces. Here at Porter we’ve had a great summer, welcoming many familiar faces and new passengers alike as they’ve hopped on a flight to a vacation destination or city break. But now it’s very much a case of back-to-school and back-to-work, to take up new challenges and meet new objectives, and, as ever, we’re ready to get you to where you need to be, with the maximum comfort and convenience that you’ve come to expect, in order to help you achieve the goals that you’ve set yourself. Go West Ottawa’s former working-class neighbourhood Hintonburg has become home to a vibrant artist community and an eclectic mix of businesses. À Ottawa, l’ancien voisinage ouvrier d’Hintonburg héberge désormais une communauté d’artistes animée et des boutiques très diverses. Head a few minutes west of Ottawa’s downtown core and you’ll arrive in Hintonburg, where clapboard houses rub eaves with coffee shops, boutiques and wine bars. Bordered by the Ottawa River Parkway to the north, the O-Train tracks to the east, the Queensway to the south and Holland Avenue to the west, this long-time working-class enclave has been steadily gentrifying since the mid-2000s. Today, gourmet doughnut shops and hip knitting clubs are drawing an influx of creative types, cultural workers and young families, who are planting roots in what has quickly become the capital’s hippest ’hood.

Eat/Drink Suzy Q Doughnuts After getting its start at the Ottawa Farmers’ Market in 2011, Suzy Q Doughnuts found a permanent home in a repurposed trailer in a Hintonburg parking lot. The yeast-raised sweets, which are handmade from a recipe inspired by owner Sue Hamer’s mom, come in gourmet flavours like raspberry lemonade, maple bacon and buttermint, all prepared from local ingredients. The Elmdale Oyster House and Tavern When Peter McCallum and Joshua Bishop, co-owners of downtown hot spot the Whalesbone, decided to open an oyster house, they headed west to the Elmdale Tavern, a landmark since 1934. The pair added a wraparound bar and a seafood-centric menu that’s a hit with both the area’s new arrivals and the tavern’s long-time habitués. Hintonburger Housed in a former Kentucky Fried Chicken, this patties-and-potatoes joint is madness at midday. The Hintonburger, a bacon cheeseburger slathered with barbecue sauce, is a perfect match for golden, crispy onion rings; so, too, is the Skinny Kitty, a tofu dog dipped in batter, Pogo-style. On sunny days, grab a seat at one of the outdoor picnic tables and commune with the hungry hordes. Back Lane Café Nostalgia for the sun-soaked streets of France is palpable at the Back Lane Café. Owner George Monsour spent a few years in Paris prior to opening this restaurant, where window shutters and street lamps provide the backdrop for Mediterranean dishes and pizzas, cooked in French-made wood-burning stoves. Shop Fab Gear 64 This men’s clothing store is a charmingly chaotic mash-up of Hawaiian shirts, western wear and rockabilly duds. For “Uncle” Bob Cabana, the shop’s Beatlescrazed owner, it doesn’t get better than the fitted fashions of 1960s mod Britain; as such, the British vintage-inspired line English Laundry gets pride of place. “My job,” says Cabana, a staunch resident of Hintonburg, where he was born and raised, “is to funk-ify Ottawa.” Ce magasin pour hommes est un mélange charmant de chemises hawaïennes, de vêtements western et de faux rockabilly. Don’t know the difference between a Cervélo and a Felt? No matter. It’s still fun to ogle the gear at this bike boutique. And you can grab a tasty espresso while you’re there; when it opened in 2007, Cyclelogik was the area’s first proper coffee shop. In 2010, artists Marcus Kucey-Jones and Ryan Lotecki installed 18 marble sculptures along Wellington Street West, Hintonburg’s main drag – all creative variations on a fire hydrant. Commissioned by the City of Ottawa, each piece is topped with an item – a camera, a book, an ear of corn, a computer screen – that is, typically, inspired by a nearby business. Residents Yousef Ghasemi, Home Inspector I was living in a quiet neighbourhood and wanted to be somewhere more active, so I moved to Hintonburg. I love walking my dog by the river. My favourite place to go is the Parkdale Market – I stop there every day to buy something fresh and local. Comme j’habitais dans un voisinage très tranquille et que je voulais un endroit plus animé, je me suis installé à Hintonburg. J’adore promener mon chien le long de la rivière. Mon coin préféré c’est le marché de Parkdale – j’y fais une halte tous les jours pour acheter des produits frais et locaux.

I like that I can do everything on foot, and that I am so close to downtown that I don’t need a car. Hintonburg is a great place to raise a family: there are good schools, a ton of green space nearby and a vibrant community life featuring everything from movie nights to festivals. Je suis arrivée dans le voisinage en 2005. D’abord j’étais en location, puis j’ai acheté une maison. J’aime pouvoir tout faire à pied. Je suis tellement proche du centre que je n’ai pas besoin de voiture pour me déplacer. Hintonburg est un excellent endroit pour élever des enfants. I’ve lived in a number of areas in Ottawa, and there’s a diversity, a mixture of cultures and incomes, to Hintonburg that I really appreciate. You can grab a coffee and see artists and lawyers hanging out. At one point, I had so many friends in the neighbourhood that a move here seemed like the right thing. Plus, it’s a terrific access point to the rest of the city. J’ai habité dans plusieurs voisinages d’Ottawa et, à Hintonburg, il y a une diversité, un mélange de cultures et de niveaux de vie que j’apprécie beaucoup. On peut prendre un café et voir artistes et avocats en train de discuter ensemble. À une époque, j’avais tant d’amis dans ce quartier qu’il m’a semblé logique de venir m’y installer. Human Nature Inspired by the contradiction of tradition and innovation, Claude Cormier adapts landscape architecture to an urban context. Inspiré par la contradiction entre tradition et innovation, Claude Cormier inscrit le jardin paysager dans un cadre urbain. I’m a landscape architect, but the work that my team and I do touches on many other practices – urban design, public art, architecture. We work on various scales, from street installations to master plans for whole neighbourhoods. The common denominator in all of them is to wake people up a bit and get them to take a fresh look at their surroundings. I love cities, and I want to provide a very positive experience for all the people – young and old, of different ethnicities – who live in them.

Je suis architecte paysagiste, mais les réalisations de mon équipe touchent à d’autres domaines – design urbain, art public, architecture. Nous travaillons sur des échelles diverses, d’installations de rue aux projets d’aménagement de tout un voisinage. J’aime l’idée de marier nature et culture. Nous avons, par exemple, planté une forêt de 52 arbres en béton peints en rose, une couleur inspirée par une gamme de rouges à lèvres. Cette œuvre, Nature légère, qui est exposée au Palais des congrès de Montréal est à la fois une manière de célébrer l’industrie des cosmétiques de la ville et la joie de vivre. Et tout récemment, nous avons créé un « champ de coquelicots » inspiré par Monet et Van Gogh devant le Musée des beaux arts de Montréal : il est en réalité constitué de 5 000 marqueurs de signalisation d’autoroute. J’appelle cela une « nature humaine » – bien qu’artificielle – mais authentique par ses références, jamais fausse.

I like the idea of crossing nature with culture. For example, we “planted” a forest of 52 concrete trees, painted lipstick pink – the Lipstick Forest – in Montréal’s Palais des Congrès, as a way of celebrating both the city’s cosmetics industry and its joie de vivre. And right now, outside the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, we’ve created a “poppy field,” inspired by Monet and Van Gogh, that is actually made of 5,000 highway lane markers. I call it “man-made nature” – artificial, yes, but authentic in its reference, never fake. I think installations like ours can change people’s perceptions of a city. They can also create a feeling of community, as they encourage people to get involved and feel proud. I love to watch people interacting with the spaces we’ve created – you realize the work has its own life. I’m inspired by visual art, advertising and mass media as much as by more traditional landscape architecture, if not more. I think 100 percent visually, and I come up with new ideas all the time. When I started off studying agronomy at the University of Guelph, my early ambition was to create a new kind of flower through crossbreeding. Now I think that I’m doing the same thing by creating these hybrid spaces of nature and culture. I don’t get any ideas from TV – tuning all that stuff out gives me a fresher, intuitive approach. I think that’s because of how I grew up. I was raised on a dairy farm in rural Québec – we also grew maples for syrup – and my parents sent my younger brother and me out to play all day. Growing up on a farm, you treat nature as a resource – it’s your living. You have no romantic notions about it. I was milking cows twice a day, morning and night, seven days a week. I was harvesting hay. I was tapping maples. Then my father died when I was 17, and we sold the farm, and I went off to university. After I realized that science and I weren’t compatible, I was attracted by the aesthetics of landscape, and I went on to study landscape architecture at the University of Toronto. That’s when I discovered the amazing life you could live in the city. I never looked back. I’m based in Montréal, but I travel to Toronto every week for work, and I think of myself as living in both cities. Porter facilitates the to-ing and fro-ing very neatly, and I love the familiar, personal element of it – I know people at the airport, on the planes, among the crew. The human scale is very important in my own work, and I recognize it when I see it elsewhere. I wouldn’t be able to travel the way I do if I thought I was just a number.

Je crois que des installations comme les nôtres changent la perception qu’ont les gens de la ville. Elles peuvent aussi créer un sentiment communautaire car elles encouragent les gens à s’impliquer et à éprouver de la fierté. J’adore observer l’interaction des gens avec les espaces que nous créons – on réalise alors que l’œuvre a sa propre vie. Je m’inspire des arts visuels, de la publicité et des médias autant que de l’architecture paysagiste traditionnelle, sinon plus. Je raisonne à 100 % en termes visuels et j’ai constamment de nouvelles idées. Quand j’étudiais l’agronomie à l’Université de Guelph, j’avais l’ambition de créer une nouvelle fleur par hybridation. Aujourd’hui, je réalise cela en créant des espaces hybrides entre nature et culture. Je ne m’inspire pas de la télé – ce qui me confère une approche plus fraîche et intuitive. C’est sans doute dû à mon enfance. J’ai grandi sur une ferme du Québec rural – nous avions des érables pour faire du sirop – et mes parents nous encourageaient mon frère et moi à jouer dehors. Quand on grandit dans une ferme, on traite la nature comme une ressource – c’est votre source de revenu. On n’en a pas une vision romantique. Je trayais les vaches deux fois par jour, matin et soir, sept jours par semaine. Je récoltais le foin, j’entaillais les érables. Puis, mon père est mort quand j’avais 17 ans et nous avons vendu la ferme. Je suis parti à l’université. Après avoir compris que la science et moi cela faisions deux, je me suis orienté vers l’esthétique des paysages. J’ai fait des études d’architecture paysagiste à Toronto. C’est là que j’ai découvert la vie incroyable qu’offrait une ville. Je ne l’ai jamais regretté. J’habite à Montréal, mais je vais à Toronto chaque semaine pour mon travail. Je considère que je vis dans deux villes. Porter me facilite ces trajets incessants et j’aime leur service personnalisé – je connais des employés à l’aéroport et des membres d’équipage. Dans mon travail, l’aspect humain est important et je sais le reconnaître quand je le retrouve ailleurs. The Creative Class Group (CCG) might take its name from the game-changing theories of urbanism guru Richard Florida, but it takes its nimble, innovative – and immensely successful – direction from Florida’s wife, Rana. CEO since 2007, Rana Florida has turned the consulting firm and speakers bureau from a boutique, Washington DC-based shop into a global powerhouse whose diverse, international clients include Microsoft, The Atlantic magazine and the CEO of Zappos, Tony Hsieh. And she’s done so, both by design and necessity, through an emphasis on exactly the workplace attributes the creative class seeks and celebrates: flexibility, independence and playfulness.

In 2002, while a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Richard Florida published The Rise of the Creative Class. The book, in which he argues that creative professionals (everyone from engineers to playwrights to entrepreneurs) have revolutionized every aspect of work and life, transformed the way academics and city leaders viewed economic development. Suddenly Richard was everywhere: in Time magazine, on The Colbert Report, invited to 10 Downing Street. Apple branded the Power Mac G5 as the “power tool for the creative class.” Banana Republic’s ads promoted its clothing to the same new demographic. Florida took a job at George Mason University, just outside DC, where he met Rana, then director of global strategic communications at HMSHost, one of the world’s largest airport developers. BMW soon came calling, asking Florida to consult on a print and television ad campaign that would reposition the brand as the car of choice for the creative class. Around the same time, Richard and Rana got engaged, and, foreseeing immense opportunity, Richard suggested that Rana head up his nascent consulting firm, Creative Class Group. Rana was hesitant. At HMSHost, she enjoyed a sixfigure salary and oversaw a $2 million budget. As she writes in her recent book, Upgrade, “I couldn’t fathom giving up my nice office and big paycheck and bonuses, my full staff, and my much-coveted board position to work from home on a shoestring. The whole proposition seemed like a huge gamble.” But it put their money where their mouths were. Running a scrappy start-up epitomized the creative class struggle – there may have been no human resources or IT department to lean on, no personal assistants or real job security, but Rana had complete control of her time and schedule. CCG grew quickly, and when the Floridas moved in 2007 to Toronto – where Richard is director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management – it went with them. Leveraging Florida’s research and data, it has advised cities on strategies to attract the creative class, instructed corporations on the purchasing habits of the demographic and guided media companies in targeting the same. Some of its most exciting work has included advising Zappos’ Hsieh on how to revitalize the moribund downtown core of Las Vegas and, with Philips, creating the Livable Cities Award to foster greater urban health and well-being. While CCG was formerly based in DC, and is now nominally based in Toronto, it has always been a kind of virtual workplace, with team members constantly roving across the globe. Currently, Steven Pedigo, a former student of Richard’s at Carnegie Mellon, 16

now works in Boston as director of research and communications, and Reham Alexander, the firm’s director of global operations and events, is based in Detroit. Additional international collaborators – anywhere from three to 20 – join the team depending on the needs of various projects. The absence of a central office has been far more of a boon than a challenge. “It’s not about being in the office together,” Rana says, “but about being on the ground with our clients. Whether we’re in Siberia, Australia or Ohio, what’s important is making sure that our team members have face time with clients, not so much with each other.” While technology has obviously made long-distance communication easier – the team works together constantly through email and video conferencing – when members meet in real physical space, those brief moments are precious. “If Richard or Rana and I are travelling to an event together,” Pedigo says, “we’re much more likely to use that time in an efficient, productive way, working on that project or another.” A virtual

office, with “branches” in different locations and time zones, also permits greater flexibility when juggling international projects. “That flexibility is just imperative,” Alexander says, “given the nature of our clients and events. We might have a live video conference from the Congolese jungle or from Pakistan. And with the time difference, I have to be available at 10 p.m.” In the corporate world in which she got her start, Rana saw too many bosses acting like clock-watching prison wardens, and vowed that she would never be that type of leader. “We’re not chaining people to their desks and asking them to work harder or work certain times,” Rana says. “Everyone on the team is hired for his or her expertise and skills. We don’t say you’re staff or employee. We don’t use those kinds of words. Everyone’s a member of a team, working together.” It’s an approach, she argues, that fosters greater creativity and self-motivation. Pedigo and Alexander, not surprisingly, concur. “It works out wonderfully,” Alexander says. “It empowers us. We know what the end product needs to be and how it gets delivered is up to us. That’s what I love about my job.”

Nous faisons partie d’une équipe et nous travaillons ensemble. » Selon elle, cette approche encourage la créativité et la motivation. Sans surprise, Pedigo et Alexander confirment. «Cela marche très bien, dit Alexander. Cela nous responsabilise. Nous savons ce que doit être le produit fini et nous décidons de quelle manière le produire. C’est cela que j’apprécie dans mon travail. »

Between Sea and Earth With stunning coastlines and a fascinating history of early settlers, Newfoundland’s Irish Loop is a place full of natural wonders. On the bridge of his idling boat, which has been waiting for one lagging pair of tourists to race up the gangplank, Captain Al Gatherall is getting his twice-daily humpback whalespotting expedition ready to go. “Welcome aboard the Gaffer VII!” he says. “I don’t know where we’re going, but we’re going!” After decades of twice-daily expeditions, he has his patter down pat. Forty minutes, a good deal of enthusiastic narrating and one a cappella Celtic sailing song from a young crew member later, the boat’s catamaran bow is

mark on it, and it’s quickly becoming a showcase for what the province has to offer visitors who venture beyond the bright lights of St. John’s. The loop is the perfect length for a two- or three-day drive. The best plan is to start in St. John’s and head south, along the historic southern shore (which is actually the peninsula’s eastern shore, go figure), where the signboards for tiny communities competitively boast about which was founded earliest. Forty minutes south of the capital, you’ll hit Bay Bulls, an ancient harbour that’s now home to a busy trade in whale- and bird-spotting tours, including Captain Gatherall’s operation. Operators in Bay Bulls offer a double draw: in addition to the whales, there is also the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, which lies just beyond the mouth of the harbour. The reserve comprises a pair of small, tall islands that are home to millions of birds, most notably the puffins that stand outside their burrows, a stone’s throw from where the tour boats idle. A boat tour can take a good half day. Down the road from Bay Bulls, you’ll find a couple of dining options. The Irish Loop Coffee House perches on a hillside on the edge of the highway, looking out over the cliffs of Witless Bay, its deck offering a gorgeous view on a clear day. If you’d prefer a heartier meal, the Captain’s Table is a relaxed, family-friendly restaurant (complete with little portholes on the walls), serving ocean-fresh seafood fare, like chowder or a bowl of lightly glazed scallops. As you continue down the coast, the grassy plains give way to towering cliffs, seafoam, a tidy village and a long, grassy isthmus that extends into the bay, rising out of the water like a grassy 24

Petit à petit, les prairies font place aux falaises imposantes, aux embruns et l’on découvre un village propret et un long isthme herbeux qui se jette dans la baie, telle une bosse surmontée d’un phare à son extrémité. hump, dotted with a lighthouse at the end. This is Ferryland, the site of the Colony of Avalon, founded in 1621 and used by English fishermen. It’s not just old by Newfoundland standards – it’s one of the oldest European settlements in the entire New World. Archaeological remains from the site have been excavated over the years, and guided tours are offered throughout the day. If you’re looking for a unique gift, the adjacent shop features replicas of artifacts found at the site, including an intriguingly useful invention called a “tyg mug”: a mug with three equidistant handles, perfect for passing around the hold of a ship when cups were in short supply. The Ferryland Lighthouse is also the setting for one of Canada’s unlikeliest new culinary stars: Lighthouse Picnics. Take the 20-minute walk to the lighthouse (you can drive your car only so close), where the hill is soft and the view of the surrounding cliffs and villages doesn’t get much better. Then, place your order – chutney-glazed ham and brie is a long-time favourite; rhubarb pie is a must when it’s in season – and plant your flag where you’d

like to sit. That’s a real flag: all customers receive a nation’s flag to identify them and their order. But because all the food is made fresh in the lighthouse itself, and space is limited, phone ahead to make a reservation. Following the highway south from Ferryland, you’ll pass through fjord-like vistas and come to Renews, where passengers of the Mayflower are said to have stopped to replenish their supplies on the way to colonize America. Overlooking a bay that’s still guarded by a grassy citadel of British cannons is Midnight Hill Manor, a roomy, dark wood-panelled priest’s house that Bob and Carol Ann Ryan converted into a B & B. (The best lodgings along the Irish Loop are the B & Bs like this one, offering home-cooked food and the kind of insights you don’t get in a hotel lobby.) “They say we’re more Irish than the Irish,” says Carol Ann, whose Newfoundland lilt actually sounds rather Irish to an outsider’s ears. Indeed, more than half of all Newfoundlanders are of Irish descent. Midnight Hill is named for the spot where Irish Catholics would gather to celebrate a secret midnight mass in the years when it was forbidden. Renews makes a great jumping-off point for a second day’s drive around the loop. As you proceed, cliffs and coves give way to a tundra-like landscape that dominates the south end of the loop – the bottom right-hand corner of Canada, where some of the oldest fossils in history have been recently located in the diagonal slabs of volcanic rock that thrust up at the coast. You can learn more at the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre, or call ahead to sign up for a tundra hike. This will allow you to see the fossils up-close at the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve, which is on track to being declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you’re feeling drawn to extremes, you can take a detour off the highway and wind 30 kilometres (about 19 miles) east to Cape Race – Canada’s last outpost in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean. At this National Historic Site, you’ll find a lighthouse with

Midnight Hill doit ainsi son nom au fait que les catholiques venaient célébrer la messe en secret à minuit durant la répression. Renews est un excellent point de départ pour le deuxième jour de votre excursion. C’est de là que par une nuit d’avril 1912, l’opérateur correspondait avec un ami rencontré à l’école de télégraphie qui n’était autre que le télégraphiste d’un paquebot approchant à vive allure : le Titanic. Leur échange devait être si captivant que l’opérateur du paquebot ignora les avertissements relatifs à la présence d’icebergs. La station de Cape Race suivit les dernières heures du navire et donna au monde l’une de ses premières retransmissions de nouvelles en direct. Au bas de la boucle, vous tomberez vite sur Trepassey, une ville colorée aux maisons typiques bâties le long de la péninsule et qui est la bourgade la plus au sud de Terre-Neuve. Faites une pause café au Trepassey Motel and Restaurant en prenant place derrière les fenêtres de sa véranda qui ont vue sur la baie où Amelia Earhart fit escale pour réparer avant de devenir la première femme à traverser l’Atlantique en avion. « Le grand-père de mon mari a même réparé le réservoir de son aéronef », annonce la propriétaire Mary Devereaux depuis sa caisse. Aujourd’hui, cet ancien cottage-hôpital est un resto à la bonne franquette où les couples profitent du soleil assis à des tables fleuries. De Trepassey, la boucle remonte vers l’ouest pour conduire à de hautes terres baptisées Barrens. Le paysage y est d’une beauté irréelle ; passez quelques instants sur la plateforme panoramique pour tenter d’apercevoir le troupeau de caribous le plus austral. Bien vite, après avoir traversé des villages de pêcheurs à flanc de colline, vous arriverez à Saint Mary’s où vous attend l’auberge de Claddagh Inn. Son propriétaire Patrick Monsigneur est souvent derrière le bar. À l’inverse des natifs de Terre-Neuve, Monsigneur affiche un accent du Manitoba. Cet ex-ingénieur en avionique des Forces Canadiennes et Carol, son épouse, qui fut pour sa part technicienne dans ce même corps, ont choisi ce coin du pays pour une nouvelle aventure. Les chambres de la Claddagh Inn sont confortables et chaleureuses,

North America’s biggest lens, towering into the fog, next to the site of a pioneering telegraphy station. It was also the station where, one April night in 1912, the operator was corresponding with an old chum from telegraph school, who happened to be the wireless operator on a fast-approaching liner named Titanic. Their correspondence was so lively that the Titanic’s operator ignored warnings that there were icebergs nearby. The Cape Race station monitored the liner’s final hours, and gave the world one of its first instances of live, breaking news. Rounding the bottom of the loop, you’ll soon come to Trepassey, a town of colourful saltbox houses built along the inlet that is Newfoundland’s southernmost settlement. Stop in for coffee at the Trepassey Motel and Restaurant, snagging a spot in its greenhouse windows, overlooking the bay where Amelia Earhart landed for repairs before becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. “My husband’s grandfather actually repaired the gas tank on her plane,” says co-owner Mary Devereaux, from behind the till. Today, the former cottage hospital is a down-to-earth eatery where couples enjoy the sunlight at flower-bedecked tables. From Trepassey, the loop climbs west into a highland area called the Barrens, where the landscape takes on an otherworldly beauty; spend a moment at the viewing platform to try to spot the world’s southernmost herd of caribou roaming the plains. Soon, skirting hillside fishing villages, you’ll find yourself in St. Mary’s, home of the Claddagh Inn, where co-owner Patrick Monsigneur often tends bar. In contrast to the speech of native Newfoundlanders, Monsigneur’s reflects his Manitoban roots. Monsigneur, a former Canadian 01 Forces flight engineer, and his wife, Carol, herself once a supply technician in the Forces, chose this 02 corner of the country as their next adventure. The 28

Claddagh Inn’s rooms are homey and snug, but the couple’s real passion can be found downstairs in the former convent’s dining room. Here, they’ve built a tiny pub out of pews and kneelers, and it’s one of the few places where you can get YellowBelly beer, direct from St. John’s, on tap. If you call ahead and reserve by midday, you can take part in the fixedmenu four-course dinner, whose main dishes range from stuffed chicken to snow crab. If you’re lucky, on a Sunday, you can catch Patrick’s Jiggs’ dinner, a traditional Irish-Canadian meal of boiled beef, cabbage, turnips, greens and savoury pease pudding, a local favourite. From St. Mary’s, it’s just a couple of hours’ drive back up to the Trans-Canada Highway, leading back to St. John’s. The northbound drive is beautiful but bittersweet, as the whales and cliffs, and open doors and welcoming tables, fall behind you, into the mists of Avalon.

I'm Chief Dispatcher for the System Operations Control Centre (SOCC) at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The dispatchers are in charge of producing the operational flight plan for every Porter flight and then monitoring the flights once they have departed. As Chief Dispatcher, I oversee all of that work, as well as manage the schedules, shifts and training programs for my team. No planes can leave without our authorization; we sign them off, and our names are on the flight plans.

What do we have to take into consideration before clearing the plane for takeoff? The first consideration in every dispatcher’s mind is safety. To ensure every flight is dispatched safely, we get confirmation of aircraft serviceability from the maintenance control team. We spend a lot of time scrutinizing the weather at the flight’s origin, the expected conditions en route and at the destination. A flight could be delayed because of an airport’s ground delay program. This could be triggered by traffic volume, poor weather or runway construction. We're the information hub between a lot of departments – maintenance, meteorologists, pilots, air traffic control. We have a total of 17 dispatchers, with four on duty at any one time, and we're always at our screens or on our phones or radios, or teletyping updates to the crew while they're in flight.

The qualities you need for this job? You must have organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize your various tasks and stay rational. Experience is key; there are a couple of Transport Canada (TC) exams you need to pass, in meteorology and operations, and then the airline will provide on-the-job training before you're checked out by a TC-approved check dispatcher. I also believe that you need to have a love of aviation. I actually made a U-turn into what I'm doing now. I initially trained as a geologist, working for a gold exploration company in South America. It eventually went under, so I returned to my hometown of Toronto and trained for my pilot's licence, which was something I'd always wanted to do. I passed the certification test, and was flying single-engine Cessna 150s and 172s, which led to a job refuelling and marshalling planes at Buttonville Municipal Airport. I left that to take a web design course, which led to a job doing aerial photography, mapping terrain from Guatemala all the way to St. John's. It was great fun, but I was travelling so much that I never saw my friends. I was craving a career that offered more stability, so I quit to take a dispatch course, and worked for a couple of other airlines before coming to Porter about two and a half years ago. I was promoted to Chief Dispatcher in April. My schedule is pretty packed; technically I'm on a 9-to-5 shift, but I generally get in around 8 a.m. to make sure everything's running smoothly. There's no time for a traditional lunch break – dispatchers may eat at their desks. The cleaning staff have a hard time with our department because it's active 24-7. I take work home more often, accessing emails and other stuff. But that's fine – I welcome the extra responsibility. I unwind by playing soccer and boxing. I like the physical release of it because my job requires a lot of intense concentration. I enjoy working for Porter because I like the people that I'm working with and the office that I'm in. But I'm also proud to work for Porter because it's an iconic airline. I love working at Toronto’s island airport, and I live a 12-minute walk from it. I have a great lifestyle – I'm downtown, and I can work out, play sports and indulge in my new hobby, which is restoring a vintage car. As for the future, well, I'm 42, and I'm just settling into my new role. I think the job is a great fit for me – I have a solid foundation to build on.

Quelles qualités exige votre poste ? Il faut avoir un bon sens de l’organisation et savoir hiérarchiser les différentes tâches tout en restant rationnel. L’expérience est cruciale. Il faut passer des examens de Transport Canada (TC), en météorologie et en opérations. Puis, la compagnie aérienne vous donne une formation pratique avant une évaluation finale par un contrôleur agréé par TC. Je crois aussi qu’il faut avoir l’amour de l’aviation. Par rapport à mes études, j’ai fait un virage à 180 degrés. J’ai en effet une formation de géologue et j’ai travaillé pour une compagnie d'exploration aurifère en Amérique du Sud. À sa fermeture, je suis rentré chez moi, à Toronto, et j’ai passé mon brevet de pilote, un vieux rêve. J’ai réussi et j’ai volé sur des monomoteurs Cessna 150 et 172 ce qui m’a permis de décrocher un travail à l’aéroport municipal de Buttonville. J’ai arrêté pour suivre un cours de conception de sites Internet qui a débouché sur un emploi de photographe aérien, pour faire des cartes depuis le Guatemala jusqu’à Saint John’s. C’était génial, mais je ne voyais jamais mes amis. Je voulais une carrière plus stable alors j’ai suivi la formation de contrôleur. J’ai tout quitté pour d’autres lignes avant d’arriver chez Porter il y a deux ans et demi. J’ai été nommé Contrôleur en chef en avril. Mon emploi du temps est bien rempli. En théorie, je fais du 9 h-17 h, mais j’arrive vers 8 h pour m’assurer que tout va bien. Pas le temps de faire une pause dîner – les contrôleurs mangent à leur bureau. Nous donnons du fil à retordre à l’équipe de nettoyage car notre service fonctionne 24 h/24. Souvent, je travaille chez moi pour lire mes courriels. Mais je ne me plains pas – j’aime les responsabilités supplémentaires. Je me détends en pratiquant football et boxe. J’aime la décontraction que cela me procure car mon poste exige une concentration intense. J’aime travailler chez Porter car j’apprécie mes collègues et mon service. Je suis fier de travailler pour Porter qui est une ligne emblématique. J’aime l’aéroport de l’île de Toronto dont je ne suis qu’à 12 minutes à pied. Ma vie me plaît : j’habite au centre-ville, je peux faire du sport et m’adonner à ma nouvelle passion qui est la restauration d’une voiture ancienne. Quant à l’avenir, je n’ai que 42 ans et je m’habitue juste à mon nouveau rôle. Je crois que ce poste me convient et me servira de tremplin. 53
