Here at Porter, we’ve had a busy and productive summer (though we did manage to get some time to relax and recharge), but with the coming of fall, we’re shining our shoes, buttoning our blazers and getting back to business. For us, that means doubling down and focusing on continuing to deliver the level of quality you’ve come to expect from us, as well as continuing to improve and innovate wherever we can. It’s great to see so many of our regular customers back on board, as you, too, get back to business, and the stories in this issue of re: porter are also about places – and creatures – on the move. Our Neighbourhood feature explores Sault Ste. Marie, a city celebrating its centennial this October, and its transition from steel town to renewable energy powerhouse. Meanwhile, our Weekender feature visits Pelee Island, temporary home to a huge variety of migratory birds. Like them, we’re committed to going the seasonal distance. I’m a managing partner at Sonic Boom Creative Media, which is the digital arm of National Public Relations (NPR), the largest PR firm in Canada. I handle all the digital and social media services for NPR’s clients. It’s a pretty wide brief. My job is really to build relationships between our clients and their stakeholders and fans on the social networks, and also to create or enhance Facebook presences and other mobile applications that may be needed to help them strengthen those relationships. I’m their guide to the social media universe.

Social media isn’t a novelty anymore. It’s an intrinsic part of the media landscape. Sure, social media is still evolving on a minute-by-minute basis, but something like Facebook isn’t going to become outmoded anytime soon.

Storytelling is at the heart of reaching social media users – telling a brand’s story without necessarily talking about the product itself. You emphasize a product’s history or unique selling point or the brand’s values. You hopefully ignite the social space and set off a bunch of what we used to call water-cooler conversations. Facebook is pretty much the world’s biggest Tupperware party. We’ve barely scratched the surface of what digital media can do. It combines all the previous great leaps forward in communication – the printing press, the telephone, the TV. The result is a vast global version of one of the most traditional means of communication: the conversation. I studied marketing at college and started my own digital consultancy in 1995. I rode the whole original wave from the dot-com to the dot-bomb – from four guys in a basement to 80 employees. I then had an old-fashioned bookpublishing business before launching a digital arm for a large communications firm and then moving on to NPR. I’ve been travelling on Porter since 2007. I fly from Montréal to Toronto every couple of weeks, probably up to 30 times a year. I’ve become familiar with Porter’s Montréal staff. My family joined me recently for a week in Toronto, and when we reached the gate, the Porter guys said, “Ah, you’re Mr. Perron’s family.” Of course, being airborne is just about the only time when you’re cut off from social media. That’s a blessing and a curse. I use the time for power napping; I rarely see takeoff. I don’t have many devices; a laptop and an iPhone will do. I have four kids – three of my own and my niece, who lives with me – and I actually keep them up-to-date with social media, which is the opposite of most households. My 12-year-old lets me play the latest Facebook games with him, though, so he’s my one-man R & D department. How do I see the future? The futurist Ray Kurzweil says that we’ve experienced the equivalent of 100 years of technological growth in the past two decades, but that we’ll experience 20,000 years of growth in the next 100 years. I’m inspired rather than daunted. We’re headed for really exciting times.

Après mes études de marketing, j’ai créé une entreprise en conseil numérique en 1995. J’ai profité de la vague des point-coms – de quatre gars dans un sous-sol, nous sommes passés à 80 employés. Ensuite, je me suis lancé dans l’édition de livres avant de créer la division numérique d’une grande entreprise de communication puis, finalement intégrer NPR. Je vole sur Porter depuis 2007. Je fais Montréal-Toronto toutes les deux semaines, environ 30 fois par an. Je connais le personnel Porter à Montréal. Récemment, ma famille est venue passer une semaine à Toronto et, en arrivant à la porte, le gars de Porter a dit : « Ah, voici la famille de M. Perron. » L’avion est le seul endroit où l’on est coupé des médias sociaux. C’est un bienfait et un mal. J’en profite pour récupérer en faisant une sieste. J’ai seulement un ordi portable et un iPhone. J’ai quatre enfants – dont ma nièce qui vit avec nous. J’utilise les médias sociaux pour leur dire ce que je fais, ce qui est sans doute le contraire d’une famille typique. Mon fils, qui a 12 ans, me laisse jouer aux derniers jeux sur Facebook avec lui – c’est mon service R&D à lui tout seul. Comment je vois l’avenir ? Le futuriste Ray Kurzweil dit que nous venons de vivre 100 ans de croissance technologique en 20 ans, et que nous allons vivre 20 000 ans en un siècle. Loin de m’inquiéter, cela m’inspire. Nous allons vivre une époque formidable. 9

You can’t throw a lasagna shell without hitting an Italian restaurant in the Sault. This high-end spot, however, elevates the cuisine. “No one else cuts their own steaks,” says executive chef Paul Chiappetta, whose menu focuses on meats – from rib-eye steak to pork side ribs – cooked to tender perfection, as well as pastas, like the heavenly portobello mushroom ravioli, which comes smothered in a white-wine herb cream. No matter what you order at this tasteful, airy bistro, make sure you get the fries. Paper cones of these hand-cut frites come accompanied with an addictive, tart garlic mayo, and they go with almost everything on Panna’s extensive menu. The eclectic range of dishes – lightly battered calamari, sushi, pad Thai, chicken curry – is a reminder of the city’s increasing ethnic diversity. The decor, a minimalist study in dove gray and lambent lighting, is serene even when the dinner crowd gets boisterous. Owner Stephen Alexander named his nine-year-old music venue/lounge/art gallery after German artist Max Ernst’s bird-like alter ego. With a bar lit by aquariums, the vibe is suitably surreal. About 150 musical acts come through annually, including luminaries like The Sadies and Cowboy Junkies. A long wine list and 13 taps, with beers from Ontario and England, keep the crowd lubricated. Saultites love their pizza – so much so that few chains have gotten a toehold here (and no self-respecting local would set foot in one). Mrs. B’s turns out deepdish pies with thick, tender crusts and an unusual sweetness (the secret ingredient, some say, is Orange Crush). The “baby” pizzas are the perfect personal size, but be sure to call ahead; it’s not unusual to see queues out the door. The name of this café and gallery is a nod to Frida Kahlo, the heroine of owner Claudia Lambert-Caputo. Even the interior of this bungalow, a former law office, has been painted the same vibrant colours as Kahlo’s Mexico City home. While the café turns out fresh soups, salads and sandwiches (comfort food with a Latin twist, sourced from local ingredients), the gallery features a rotating array of works, all for sale, by Sault Ste. Marie photographers, painters and jewelers. Le nom de ce café-galerie est un clin d’œil à Frida Kahlo, l’idole de la propriétaire Claudia Lambert-Caputo. The Sault’s a sporty town – the Greyhounds junior hockey team is a huge draw, and many national events are held here – so it’s no surprise that locals also love sports memorabilia. This shop carries new and vintage cards as well as signed jerseys, helmets and figurines. Even better, it sells the display units – cases for jerseys, wall mounts for hockey sticks – that every man cave requires. For the many young families that have recently moved to the Sault, this charming, two-year-old boutique has become a one-of-a-kind godsend. Owner Kristi Cistaro opened the store after her first child was born. “I had a baby and had to buy a lot of stuff online, because there was nothing here,” she says. She’s since filled that niche with an overwhelming amount of exclusive, often made-in-Canada and environmentally friendly maternity wear, infant clothing and toys. Woon’s Portable iDolls will rock your toddler’s world and The Sling Sisters’ wet bags, made in Winnipeg, are chic enough to double as stylish handbags. Pour les jeunes couples qui s’installent à Sault, cette charmante boutique ouverte il y a deux ans est une aubaine. This spectacular 25-kilometre biking and walking trail, named for the city’s late mayor, provides a singular blend of refuge and recreation. It completely circles the Sault, linking residential neighbourhoods to the waterfront, several major landmarks (the Roberta Bondar Pavilion, the Bushplane Heritage Centre) Algoma University and the Fort Creek Conservation Area. You can cycle the trail in about two hours, or just take in a smaller section on a leisurely stroll. Watch for wildlife at Fort Creek – bears, foxes and moose have found this green highway to their liking as well. In autumn, this is the thing to do – the colours are unbelievable. A $12 million upgrade in 2011 turned this locomotive trip into a luxurious feast for the senses. Trains depart from downtown and wend 184 kilometres (114 miles) into a majestic landscape most people have only glimpsed in Group of Seven paintings. Brick by Brick Home to bicycle workshops, gardening seminars and Toronto’s largest farmers’ market, Evergreen Brick Works has come a long, long way from its industrial roots. Lieu d’accueil d’ateliers de réparation de vélos, de séminaires de jardinage et du plus grand marché de Toronto, Evergreen Brick Works a oublié ses racines industrielles. Evergreen Brick Works is many things – a farmers’ market, a wildlife reserve, a summer camp – but mostly it’s a metaphor. Founded in 1889 as the Don Valley Pressed Brick Works Company, the Brick Works produced, for nearly a century, the bricks that built Toronto, where it is located, as well as key parts of Montréal, Ottawa and Winnipeg. Today, with the quarry exhausted and the brick machines retired, the 41-acre site has re-emerged as a pre-eminent producer – not of

things this time but of the ideas that will shape the sustainable cities of the future. What’s more is that the success of the Brick Works as a testing ground for world-changing ideas – about architecture, ecology, community and more – has made the site a potent symbol of what cities can achieve. Evergreen Brick Works, which is perhaps best described as the world’s most ecologically minded community centre, launched in its current form in 2010; its influence might not match that of its previous incarnation quite yet. The history of the Brick Works began in the 1880s, when William Taylor, who owned a paper mill on the site, struck clay. A turning point arrived on April 19, 1904, when a fire erupted in a factory at Bay and Wellington Streets and quickly spread, ultimately destroying more than 100 downtown Toronto buildings. Following the fire, wood was abandoned in favour of brick, and production at the Brick Works skyrocketed. At its peak, the site produced more than 43 million bricks per year. In 1984, with the quarry nearly bereft of clay and shale, production ceased. The site was sold to Torvalley Associates, housing developers who were apparently not discouraged by the fact that the Brick Works, which sits alongside the lower Don River, is in a flood plain. Fortunately, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority nixed the development, and the site’s regeneration began. The quarry was filled in with debris from the construction of Scotia Plaza, and a wetland was created to restore parts of Mud Creek, an adjacent tributary. The animals – snapping turtles, belted kingfishers, green herons, red-winged blackbirds – soon arrived. Before long, the people followed, too. Geoff Cape was already engaged with what he calls “restoring the ecology of the urban landscape” when the site came onto his radar. 18

Cape is the executive director and co-founder of Evergreen, the charity that manages the Brick Works site. “Around 2000, we began to explore the idea of the site as a campus focused on sustainable cities, and a gateway to nature,” he says. Evergreen began ramping up, forming a range of strategic partnerships – with patrons like Robin and David Young, and with organizations like Outward Bound, the Institute without Boundaries and, recently, Cisco – to help realize its vision. “One of the biggest pieces that has allowed us to be successful is an open and flexible approach to collaboration,” says Cape. It’s worked: The site attracted 300,000-plus visitors last year, with as many as 2,000 coming on Saturdays for Toronto’s largest farmers’ market. In addition to standard items like heirloom tomatoes, handmade cheeses and local, organic chicken, the market offers herbal skin-care products, smallbatch caramels, Thai crafts and more. Live music and face painting give the market a street-party atmosphere. Marina Queirolo, Evergreen’s food program manager, calls the market an antidote to “nature deficit disorder.” She says, “By interacting with farmers, city dwellers re-connect to the land.” With its education programs, Evergreen takes a very direct approach to reconnecting people with nature: It starts school tours not in the parking lot but at the Castle Frank subway station, a 30-minute hike away, so the kids see the context of the site. The children’s programming is based in Chimney Court, an eco-playground, complete with a wood fort-building section.

Education extends to adults, too: Bike Works hosts a range of cycling-related classes, and Garden Groups offer volunteers the privilege of weeding and planting the site. Jen Knox, a publicist, gardens here on Tuesdays. “My boyfriend and I don’t have any outdoor space at our condo,” she says. “It’s so refreshing to escape the city and come to this little pocket of nature.” Community engagement is key, but Evergreen has grander ambitions, too. Recently, it launched CityWorks, which, Cape says, “will function as an international centre for sustainable cities.” To execute CityWorks, Evergreen has teamed up with partners like the World Bank and the World Economic Forum. One of CityWorks’s current projects is “MOVE,” an exhibition that looks at sustainable urban transportation, from “Ordinary Bicycle,” an 1877 penny farthing, to “PAT,” a mobility concept vehicle that might rule our roads in 2040. A corridor is lined with mock subway ads promoting community engagement, and a station in the corner challenges kids to build barns with wood pieces. “There just aren’t exhibitions like this anywhere else in the world,” says Cape. As Evergreen’s global aspirations take shape, it’s still the day-to-day interactions that sustain the organization and, Cape says, that provide the deepest gratification. “I went to the site one night recently and there was a 300-person birthday event. A bit further away, I saw families sitting around the wood-burning pizza oven in the children’s area. Around the corner people were gathered for a bike repair program. I said, ‘It’s 10 on a weeknight. You’d think it would be quiet.’ I had gone to pick some things up, and I wound up having pizza with the party guests. I felt proud,” he says. “It was just one of those moments.”

Je me suis dit : ‘Et il est 22 heures un jour de semaine. Je croyais qu’il n’y aurait personne.’ J’étais juste passé pour récupérer quelque chose, et je me suis retrouvé à manger de la pizza avec ces gens. J’ai ressenti une grande fierté. C’était un grand moment », conclut-il. 02

Island Time On Pelee Island, a sunny patch of land off Ontario’s shores in Lake Erie, wine lovers, birdwatchers and bon vivants escape the mainland grind and unwind. C’est à l’île Pelée, un coin ensoleillé du littoral de l’Ontario sur le lac Érié, qu’amateurs de bon vin, d’oiseaux et bons vivants trouvent leur paradis. Islands are funny places, and every island is funny in its own way. It may seem at first that there’s merely a vast strip of water dividing Pelee Island from Southern Ontario’s shore, but spend some time in the middle of Lake Erie and you’ll quickly discover that things are different out here: the people, the landscape, even the very passage of time.

For dinner, head to The Main Grill and Ale House. Soon after Thomas Soutar and Heather Brown opened shop in 2010, the restaurant became a favourite for its locally sourced, elevated casual fare. Inside the brick-walled dining room, indulge in such haute comfort dishes as the Black and Tan pork chop – marinated in pale ale, with a Guinness honey glaze – washed down with local wines (Essex County’s Colio Estate) and brews (St. Thomas’ Railway City Brewing Company). Spend the night at the Mettawas End B&B, which offers two advantages: proximity to the ferry, and a fantastic multi-course breakfast by the proprietor, Burgundian expat Roland Chaudat, who wears his chef’s whites to prepare it. After eating, hop aboard the ferry to what Chaudat calls “the Florida of Canada.” Your first hint that things are different on the island might come when the woman at the ticket booth already knows who you are – after all, your name is the only one on the reservation list that she doesn’t know. Once aboard, while away the 90-minute journey with a goblet of Pelee Island wine, which is poured generously at the cafeteria, and which can be consumed on the ship’s outer deck. Once on the island, head to the Pelee Island Heritage Centre, where you can absorb the history and folklore of this 42-square-kilometre island – its early era as home to some of Canada’s first wineries; the Prohibition-era focus on tobacco farming; and its current identity as a land of cottages and nature conservation. New for 2012, curator Kim Gardner has assembled the “100 Gateways to Pelee” audio tour, featuring some 60 local voices recounting the oral history of flagged destinations across the island, from tales of pirates to the arrival of electricity in 1955. The best way to cover the island is on two wheels, so swing behind the Heritage Centre to

Comfortech, the cycle shop of Rick Masse (who is also the island’s mayor). Pick up a beach cruiser, or an Ecolo Cycle electric bike, which can reach motorized speeds of 30 kilometres per hour. Comfortech provides cycling maps of the island, and knowledgeable local Anne Marie Fortner runs tours through her Explore Pelee outfit. Whichever way you go, you’ll quickly discover the secret that makes Pelee Island, which was formed 12,000 years ago by retreating glaciers, a prime destination for cyclists: no hills! Pedal north along the island’s west coast, avoiding the occasional wild turkey, and you’ll reach Conorlee’s, a bakery and sandwich joint run by young local couple Matt Costello and Ricki Oltean. The fresh fare proffered inside, beneath a pressed-tin ceiling, ranges from Israeli couscous salad to a roasted pork tenderloin wrap (plus gourmet pizzas on weekends). But Ricki will tell you that her favourite is the Big Lebowski, a buttery puff pastry stuffed with sweetened cream cheese. Further along the northern shore, on a wide strip of sandy beach that flows into Lighthouse Point Nature Reserve, you’ll find the Wavecrest B&B. Each of the three finely appointed guest suites features a luxurious ensuite bathroom. As the afternoon turns to happy hour, and owners Barry Wayman and Thom Brown crack open a bottle of Pelee Island Pinot Grigio for their guests, you’ll know you’re living on island time. Barry and Thom are a wealth of insider knowledge, so you’re likely to end up at Mark Emrich’s place for dinner. Mark’s parents, who hailed from Ohio (another ferry route runs south to Sandusky, Ohio), opened the Anchor and Wheel Inn in 1971. When Mark, a gregarious guy who wears his Hawaiian shirts unbuttoned past his sternum, greets you at the door with 28

a hearty “Welcome to the Canadian Keys!” you’ll understand why: From the yacht burgees hanging from the rafters, to the Red Stripe beer and Mark’s marvellous Caribbean jerk pickerel, this restaurant is clearly the product of a reggae obsessive who winters in the Florida Keys. After a night of snoozing to the calming sounds of Lake Erie’s gentle surf, you’ll wake up ready to embrace the land. Begin with a short hike up the beach to the Pelee Island Lighthouse. Built in 1834 and decommissioned in 1909, the recently revitalized beacon was once a vital tool for guiding ships through shallow Lake Erie, known as the Graveyard of the Great Lakes for its frequent shipwrecks. Zip down to the island’s opposite corner to discover its second provincial nature reserve, Fish Point. By now, you’ve surely spotted a panoply of birds flitting across the island, but the thick flocks blanketing Fish Point affirm that Pelee Island stands at a crucial point on two major migration routes, the Mississippi and Atlantic flyways. While the nearby mainland is a world-renowned destination for serious birders tracking nearly 400 identified species, Pelee Island remains a bit under the radar. The focus here is on research, and the Pelee Island Bird Observatory (PIBO) plays a key role in banding and tracking migratory species. The organization’s founder, Graeme Gibson (stepson of Margaret Atwood, the island’s biggest celebrity resident), says, “We encourage people to come see us, especially people who are new to birding, but it’s not like we have any huge neon signs advertising our presence.” Visits to the field house – located a five-minute walk through the woods from a roadside marker – feature banding demonstrations by Gibson and his wife, Sumiko Onishi; amateurs can witness the delicate act of safely handling and tagging migrating birds, especially such sonorous songbird species as yellow-rumped warblers. If you’d prefer to set out on your own, take a wander through the Stone Road Alvar, a unique ecosystem of Carolinian forest over flat limestone bedrock, where you might spot a yellow-breasted chat, one of the species known to nest in the alvar. 03

Padding through the barely-cleared trails that cut through chinquapin oak woods, keep your eyes – and ears – open for the sweet tones of songbirds hidden among the symphony of frogs and insects. Ironically, this persistent low hum of nature represents the quiet that avid birders seek, away from the larger crowds found on the mainland. If you’re still having trouble catching a glimpse of that elusive olive-sided flycatcher, be sure to bring binoculars. It’s been a while since you sampled a glass of wine, hasn’t it? If the mainland is where Pelee Island Winery’s production work goes down, the island is dedicated to enjoying the wares of the island’s only grower. The wine, after all, performs its own migration; ripe grapes from 550 acres of island vines are shipped to the mainland for crushing, and finished bottles return to the Pelee Island Wine Pavilion to be enjoyed on the bucolic patio. Visitors are invited to grill their own sausages and steaks (also available for purchase) at the pavilion’s public-use barbecues. As pavilion manager Melissa Strickler says, “We’re sort of lazy here, in a good way.” Just up the road from the pavilion, make a final stop for souvenirs at Pelee Art Works, a non-profit collective that displays and sells arts and crafts by island residents (and select mainlanders with a Pelee connection). Of the 50-some artisans whose paintings, glass art and crochet work are exhibited, you might already recognize such familiar names as Ricki Oltean (from Conorlee’s), a jewellery artist, and Sumiko Onishi (from PIBO), who creates avian portraits. Sadly, no island visit can last forever. So inevitably, as businesses begin to shutter around Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, and the famed late-October Pelee pheasant hunts wind down, you, too, will have to depart this paradise. Before you go, though, check with Graeme Gibson at PIBO to find out if the returning monarch butterflies 30

If they’re indeed present, then as you drive off the ferry on the mainland, make a quick detour east to Point Pelee National Park, where you’ll see thousands of orange-and-black-patterned butterflies on their way south for the winter. The monarchs only grace the region for a few days, just as you might during a visit. And as with the monarchs, the Pelee islanders have a strong suspicion that they’ll see you again soon, too.

That’s “hawker” as in street vendor, as this new venture on Ossington’s restaurant row takes Singapore street food and moves it indoors, albeit in a no-frills, origami-wallpaper, handwritten-cardboard-menu kind of way. Chef Alec Martin sets out his stall with such sidewalk staples as curry pork satay with pickled cucumber, and laksa (curry soup with chicken, flat rice noodles and tofu puffs). It would be fair to say that the new venture from cocktail hotshots David Kaplan and Alex Day – co-owner and former bartender of the exemplary Death & Company – is effervescent. That’s because half of the 16 house specials at this 120-seat subterranean space in the financial district are imbued with bubbles, such as the Heads Up, a carbonated cauldron of Aperol, acid phosphate, seltzer and vermouth blanc, flash-infused with watermelon via a whipped-cream canister. Pelee Posse Pelee Island, in the western half of Lake Erie, is one of the planet’s most popular stopovers for migratory birds. We’ve netted some of the sweeter tweeters in transit. Ace of Base When he’s not flying across Eastern Canada or managing Porter’s Halifax team, Base Captain Matthew McFarlane is souping up his 1937 pickup truck or cruising in the Atlantic. I’m the Base Captain for Porter out in Halifax. What that means is that I fly full-time, but I also handle issues or problems that any other captains or first officers based here want to raise. I’m the liaison with Toronto, but I deal with most issues – the breadand-butter ones like scheduling and expenses – in-house. I’m the go-to guy. Since we started out here last September, our

operations have become progressively smoother. I don’t have set office hours; I am on my Blackberry a lot. But that’s fine. There is definitely a lot to be said for flexibility. Halifax is my hometown. I left around nine years ago and worked out west for a while before coming to Porter as a first officer in Toronto. Porter didn’t have flights to Halifax at that time, but I lobbied hard for Porter to take it on. In fact, I like to think that it was my persistence that convinced Porter to open the base. I was hankering to come back. I have two young boys and my parents are getting older, and the idea of settling back here was really attractive. I couldn’t be happier. There’s a small-town feel to Halifax. The city is cosmopolitan, but its pace of life is a little slower, and people are very friendly here. I’ll give you an example: I live in a subdivision with fairly large properties, and I have an acre and a half of land. I have neighbours, but we’re considerably spread out. I’m currently digging out my backyard with a mini-excavator, and last weekend I tipped it over. I called a neighbour I don’t know very well, and within 10 minutes, five other neighbours had appeared in the woods to help me right the piece of equipment. Halifax is that kind of a place. There’s the same familial feel out at the airport. We have 10 people per position here

Halifax est ma ville natale. Je l’ai quittée il y a environ neuf ans et j’ai travaillé dans l’Ouest avant de devenir copilote chez Porter à Toronto. À l’époque, nous n’avions pas de vols vers Halifax, mais j’ai poussé pour qu’on ouvre cette route. Je veux même croire que c’est ma persistance qui a convaincu Porter de le faire. J’avais envie de rentrer au pays, car j’ai deux petits garçons et mes parents sont âgés. Halifax a une atmosphère de petite ville. C’est une ville cosmopolite, mais le rythme de vie y est moins rapide et ses habitants sont très chaleureux. Par exemple, j’habite dans un voisinage où les maisons sont plutôt grandes et j’ai 6 000 m2 de terrain. Les voisins sont assez loin. En ce moment, je fais une tranchée dans le jardin avec une minipelleteuse. L’autre jour, je l’ai renversée. J’ai demandé à un voisin que je connais vaguement de m’aider et, en 10 minutes, cinq autres voisins sont venus nous donner un coup de main. C’est typique d’Halifax. Nous avons la même ambiance familiale à l’aéroport. En ce moment, il y a 10 personnes pour chaque poste – 10 commandants, 10 commissaires de bord, etc. – et Porter prévoit d’accroître ce

at the moment – 10 captains, 10 pursers, 10 flight attendants and so on – and Porter is planning to increase that number to 12, but I am sure that we will still be a close-knit group. I talk to most of the guys everyday, so it’s not too hard to keep on top of the issues. I’m 35, and I’ve been flying for about 15 years now. It’s something I was always interested in; I’ve always been a machinery nut, taking engines apart and tinkering and putting them back together, and a plane is the ultimate guy-toy in some ways. All that knowledge – of how things fit together, how the elements interact – is really helpful when you’re flying. I’m happy to roll my sleeves up and climb all over a plane and check the systems, though probably not in my captain’s outfit. Before working at Porter, I flew for a couple of cargo companies, delivering auto parts to Ontario and the United States, and doing medevacs (medical evacuations) up north to the native reserves. I was pretty much given a plane and told to head off. At Porter, obviously, there’s a massive support system behind the employees. But there’s still an informal feel, as though I could raise any issue with the guys in Toronto and they’d listen. Although, I did ask for a waterfall and a grand piano for my office here, and I’m still waiting for those. What do I do when I’m not working? I’m landscaping my grounds – hence the excavator – so that’s keeping me pretty busy lately. I also have a 1937 pickup truck in my garage that I’m customizing. My boys are six and four years of age, and I take them fishing now and again when they’re not burrowing in the massive mud piles in the backyard. My wife’s a flight attendant for another airline, so we’re always planning around each other’s schedule. Trying to make arrangements can be hectic sometimes, but it’s helpful that we both understand the ins and outs of the airline business. I have a pretty good set-up at the moment, but I’m always looking to keep climbing the ladder. Being Base Captain for the whole of Porter would be nice, but for now I’m happy out here on the East Coast. I’m less than 10 minutes from the ocean, and I have a 14-foot aluminum boat that we go out on. I used to work on a 60-foot sailboat in Halifax, giving tours of the harbour, whose waters, incidentally, are second in depth only to those of Sydney, Australia. So yes, I’ve done cars and boats and planes. Which are best? Planes, obviously. Working with them every day hasn’t taken the romance out of flying for me. And I like the challenges involved in keeping everything ticking. When things go a little sideways, as they inevitably do sometimes, I become fully engaged in bringing them back on an even keel. It makes me appreciate the sunny days even more. And we have plenty of those out here.

L’ambiance est toujours assez décontractée pour que je me sente capable d’évoquer tout sujet avec les gars de Toronto en sachant qu’ils m’écouteront. Pendant mes loisirs, j’aménage mon jardin – d’où la pelleteuse – ce qui me prend pas mal de temps. J’ai aussi une camionnette de 1937 que je personnalise dans mon garage. Mes fils ont 6 et 4 ans et je les emmène à la pêche de temps en temps quand ils ne sont pas trop occupés à jouer dans la boue au jardin. Ma femme est hôtesse de l’air sur une autre compagnie, alors nous devons faire des miracles pour parvenir à synchroniser nos emplois du temps. Heureusement, nous connaissons l’un et l’autre les exigences du métier. Pour l’instant, je suis satisfait de ma situation, mais je cherche toujours à progresser. Être commandant de base pour tout Porter serait encore mieux, même si pour l’instant je suis heureux sur la côte Est. Je suis à moins de 10 minutes de l’océan et j’ai un voilier de 14 pieds en aluminium. Jadis, j’ai travaillé sur un 60 pieds à Halifax. Je faisais visiter le port dont les eaux sont les plus profondes après celles de Sydney. J’aime donc les voitures, les avions et les bateaux. Ce que je préfère ? Les avions, bien entendu. Même au quotidien cela n’enlève rien au plaisir de voler. Et j’aime le défi de tout faire tourner au poil. Quand il y a des problèmes, cela arrive parfois, je m’emploie à fond pour tout remettre à flot. Cela me permet de mieux apprécier les journées calmes. Et elles ne manquent pas par ici. 53
