Chef Donna Dooher left Toronto foodies inconsolable when she closed her beloved restaurant Mildred Pierce in 2007. But now they have a new place of pilgrimage in up-and-coming Liberty Village, where they will find old favourites (handmade ricotta gnudi, flaky pot pies) nestling alongside some new classics-to-be (smoked whitefish fritters, golden beet salad). Many would miss it if this stylish vintage boutique were suddenly to evaporate. Owner Julie Yoo specializes in a giddy mix of dresses, shoes and accessories from the 70s and 80s in the front room, while the back room houses treasures from the 40s through to the 60s, including retro-glam ball gowns and original designer gems from the likes of Hermès, Gucci and Chanel. It’s less a cocktail lounge, more a cross between an apothecary and an alchemist’s lab. Bar Chef’s owner Frankie Solarik presides behind the long black slate bar amid an array of test tubes, infusion jars and blowtorched bananas. His synthesized creations include mind-blowers like the Vanilla Hickory Smoked Manhattan, where he ignites a pile of hickory chips in a sauté pan, and then… well, perhaps you’d better just don protective goggles and come see – and taste – for yourselves. Smooth Operator Ramp Supervisor Marlon Alexander tells us exactly what his job entails and explains why he’d rather keep his feet on the tarmac. Marlon Alexander, surveillant de piste, explique en quoi consiste son travail et pour quelles raisons il préfère garder les pieds sur l’aire de trafic. When most people hear my job title, the first thing they want to know is what I really do. I’m responsible for the training of the ramp agents – all the people who oversee operations out on the tarmac around the plane: from the ramp leads, who oversee the loading of luggage into the hold and make sure the aircraft push-back is done properly, to the wing-walkers, who back the plane out, getting it ready for taxiing. We currently have nine agents at Newark, where I’m based. But I also coordinate operations between the Ramp Attendants and the Porter Customer Service Representatives from check-in through to the gate, so I do a lot of running up and down stairs with a walkietalkie. It keeps me pretty fit. If anyone has a problem during the process – a mismatch between the passenger manifest and the number of bags, for example – I’m the one who’s called in to assist with it. I pretty much work a day shift. I arrive early, but the most hectic part of my day is around lunchtime, when the flights start 22

One of the trickiest parts of the job is making sure that passengers’ bags get to where they need to be. At Newark, we have a lot of passengers transferring to and from long-haul airlines and we need to work very quickly when retrieving the bags. Luckily, Porter has a pretty distinctive blue colour tag, which helps flag them. Other than that, I guess I spend the largest part of my time keeping everything running smoothly and handling questions. I’ve worked on the ramp side for Porter since the beginning, building up from Ramp Lead to Supervisor. I like Porter because it’s a small, tight, boutique operation – the culture is a lot different to many of the major airlines. You feel like the management is approachable; you have this sense that you’re all in it together. I’ve always been interested in planes and airports. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago, and my parents travelled frequently between there and the USA to visit relatives. Some of my earliest memories are being taken to the airport, and thinking it was really glamorous and exciting, and seeing all these strong emotions as people greeted each other or saw their loved ones off. My dad was an auto mechanic, and I think I was probably about five years old when he first started taking me to the garage and putting a spanner in my hand. So when I grew up it just seemed natural to combine my interests in planes and mechanics. I actually took a course in aeronautical engineering in college, and I’m about to complete my FAA exams to get my Airframe and Powerplant license. With my job, I have the opportunity to take the management or mechanical route with Porter – white-collar or blue-collar. But I think I’ll go with the blue-collar. Either way, I’d like to stay with Porter. It’s a young company that’s continuing to grow despite the current state of the economy. I live just outside of Jersey City at the moment, but I’ll probably need to relocate to Canada to train to become a mechanic on the Porter fleet. But that’ll be fine. I’m still young – 31 – and open to new experiences. An aspect of my job that I’m really proud of, and would like to draw attention to, is the morale of the ramp team that I supervise at Porter. I’ve worked with some airlines where they simply don’t care and throw the bags about like they were rubbish sacks. I tell all my team that they have a really important hand in customer service, and try and instill some pride in their role – you know, emphasize that what they do really matters, particularly at the moment, when the papers are full of horror stories about lost luggage. I’ll make sure that, for instance, if one of the team is bringing up a bag for a transit passenger, they’ll pull the handle up so that they can get right off the plane and grab it and go. I’m an ex-military man and a stickler for detail in that way, but I think it’s those little touches that make all the difference. If you get one passenger out of 70 who appreciates something like that, then I think I’ve done my job.

Parmi mes premiers souvenirs, je me rappelle être allé à l’aéroport et avoir pensé que c’était vraiment excitant et intéressant. J’adorais regarder les gens qui se retrouvaient en s’embrassant avec émotion. Mon père était mécanicien automobile et je crois que vers 5 ans, il a commencé à m’emmener à son garage et m’a laissé bricoler avec ses outils. En grandissant, il a été naturel d’associer ma passion pour les avions à celle de la mécanique. J’ai étudié l’ingénierie aéronautique à l’université et je suis sur le point de passer les examens de la FAA pour obtenir ma licence Airframe and Powerplant. Avec Porter, j’ai le choix entre poursuivre dans le management ou devenir mécanicien – col blanc ou col bleu. Je pense choisir la deuxième voie. L’important c’est de rester chez Porter. C’est une entreprise jeune qui poursuit sa croissance malgré la crise. Pour l’instant, j’habite dans la banlieue de Jersey City, mais je devrai sans doute aller au Canada si je deviens mécanicien sur les appareils de Porter. Ce n’est pas un problème, car je n’ai que 31 ans et j’aime les nouvelles expériences. Je voudrais souligner un autre aspect de mon travail dont je suis fier : il s’agit du moral de l’équipe de l’aire de trafic que je supervise. Dans d’autres compagnies, les employés jettent les sacs n’importe où et s’en fichent. Je dis à mes équipiers qu’ils jouent un rôle important dans le service à la clientèle et je m’efforce de leur donner une fierté dans leur travail – vous savez, leur faire sentir que leur tâche est importante. Surtout en ce moment alors que les journaux rapportent de nombreuses anecdotes sur les bagages perdus. Je surveille, par exemple, que si un agent apporte un bagage en transit, il mette bien la poignée sur le dessus pour que le passager n’ait plus qu’à l’empoigner en partant. Comme j’ai fait l’armée, je suis intransigeant sur de tels détails. Je crois que toutes ces petites touches font une différence. Même si seulement un passager sur 70 apprécie quelque chose comme cela, alors je suis satisfait, j’ai rempli ma mission. 23

Québec City looks just like it should be in a snow globe. Perched on a hill, it’s quaint and quiet and every cobblestone street is full of romance. The skyline of gothic spires, whimsical turrets and domed bastions seems to belong to another century. And indeed it does. In the early 17th century, Québec City was founded as a fortified trading post where furs procured from the First Nations were sent back to France. Trading flourished and persisted, and for the first half of the 19th century, Québec was the most important port in North America. Unfortunately, the advent of steel, dredging and steamships were its downfall. By 1860, traffic dwindled and the port fell into squalor. Until 20 years ago, the Vieux-Port – now home to the city’s top galleries, boutiques, hotels and restaurants – used to be known simply as ‘the docks’. It was a run-down slum where bars and bawdy houses would erupt into drunken brawls. “Until the late 1980s, this place was spooky,” explains Jean-Francois Renaud, owner of a chic fashion boutique on rue Champlain. “You wouldn’t walk on the streets after 6pm. Now this place isn’t something to be avoided – it’s alive. This is a real neighborhood now,” he says. It’s also an architectural goldmine. Glancing up, you notice slanted copper roofs dripping verdigris down magnificent greystone facades. Walking along the quay, you catch glimpses of abandoned imperial banks with imposing columns. Entering one of the many art galleries dotting the landscape, you aren’t surprised to learn that the arched vault in the basement was constructed in 1647 as a storage space for beaver pelts. The entire district is like a magical time machine to the 17th century – with innovative restaurants, cafés serving perfect espressos and independent boutiques stocking high-end designers.

Malheureusement, l’avènement de l’acier, des dragues et des bateaux à vapeur causent son déclin. Vers 1860, le trafic diminue et le port tombe en décrépitude. Il y a seulement vingt ans, le Vieux-Port, aujourd’hui empli de boutiques, galeries de luxe, hôtels et autres restaurants, s’appelait encore les quais. Dans ses bars et boîtes de nuit douteux, les bagarres d’ivrognes n’étaient pas rares. « Jusqu’à la fin des années 1980, l’endroit glaçait le sang, explique Jean-François Renaud, propriétaire d’une boutique de mode chic rue Champlain. Personne ne sortait après 18 h. Aujourd’hui, l’endroit revit, c’est un vrai quartier. » C’est aussi une mine d’architecture, avec ses toits en cuivre verdis et ses façades magnifiques en pierre grise. Le long des quais, on remarque d’anciennes banques impériales aux colonnades imposantes. Dans l’une des nombreuses galeries d’art, je ne suis pas surpris d’apprendre que la cave voûtée a été érigée en 1647 pour stocker les peaux de castor. Tout le quartier est comme une machine à remonter le temps, avec ses cafés, ses restaurants d’avant-garde et des boutiques remplies de créations de designers. 25

Café du Monde is the perfect place to witness first-hand the transitions in the Vieux-Port. What was once a derelict wharf is now home to a brasserie decked out in the grand Left Bank style – all burgundy paint and waiters in black vests and starched aprons. The windows open onto the port, and as ships coast in from the Atlantic, it can feel like the whole world is coming to town. Café du Monde is popular with locals, so reservations are essential. Le Café du Monde est l’endroit idéal pour apprécier de près la transformation du Vieux-Port. Cet ancien wharf décrépi est aujourd’hui une brasserie style Rive gauche, avec sa déco Bordeaux et ses garçons en tabliers blancs amidonnés et gilets noirs. Les fenêtres donnent sur le port où l’on peut voir les bateaux arrivant de l’Atlantique. Whether for dinner or lunch, L’Échaudé is the new wave of old port bistros. Le Buffet de l’Antiquaire

Seemingly just a cheap dive nestled amidst the antique stores on rue St-Paul, this lively diner is one of the last remaining links to the area’s working-class roots. Famous for its gargantuan breakfasts, Le Buffet also serves a spectacular lunch. Waitresses speak whip-smart Joual while serving classic local concoctions such as cipaille – a layered meat-andpotato pie tasting slightly of molasses – or ragout de boulettes et de pattes – a seriously delicious stew of meatballs and pig’s feet served with mashed potatoes, mushy peas and home-pickled beets. Ce petit resto toujours plein, niché parmi les boutiques d’antiquaires sur St-Paul, n’a l’air de rien. Pourtant, c’est l’un des derniers liens avec les racines prolétaires du quartier. Continually voted among the best hotels in the world by magazines like Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler, this modern auberge brings the past to life. Among the oldest churches in North America, this ancient stone building with a gold-and-white interior still opens for mass on Sundays. For non-believers, the ethereal organ music is worth it alone, but be sure to take a moment and marvel at the metre-long model boat dangling in the centre of the room. A scale replica of Le Brezé, a ship carrying French citizens here in the 17th century, it’s a reminder that this colony arrived by sea and was built on faith. On célèbre encore la messe chaque dimanche dans cette vénèrable église en pierre, à l’intérieur blanc et or, l’une des plus anciennes d’Amérique du Nord. What I really love is going to Le Pape George, a little wine bar in the Vieux-Port where you always meet sailors, cargo ship crews and other people who work on the sea. They’re such characters – if you’re lucky, you might even meet a captain. Christine Larouche has been making soap for a decade. Starting with a stall in the marketplace a couple of blocks over, she now occupies a spacious building on rue St-Paul. Below the main-floor showroom is her soapy workshop, where she handcrafts soaps scented with magnolia, lavender or linden-flower – and using milk from goats that roam near her countryside boutique in Batiscan. The Petit Champlain district on the western boundary of the old port began as a marketplace hundreds of years ago. Today, it’s a cute, happening shopping district. Alongside the requisite tourist haunts selling novelty T-shirts, you can also find fashion boutiques like Oclan, which stocks brands like J. Lindberg, Tiger of Sweden and Jean Paul Gaultier. the right stories and stars, they’ll go. We have a movie called Young Victoria right now that I think is a perfect example – it’s heritage, it’s quality. But I do think that the middle-aged demographic is less important to the studios than the big-ticket popcorn crowd.

There’s always a big bunch of us distributors chasing after the same hot titles. It happens all the time. We have five people in acquisitions whose job it is to pick up on possible films even before they’re made – at the script stage, or even the ideascribbled-on-the-napkin stage. It’s not getting in on the ground floor so much as the basement.

Porter has been a godsend for our company. There are four of our people commuting between New York and Toronto every week, and a lot of Toronto-Montréal traffic. I look for familiarity and lack of stress above all else when I’m travelling, so I can take it for granted. I don’t want surprises or unheralded delays. I appreciate the Porter staff – they’re young and friendly, but unobtrusive. I don’t want them singing on the plane. And the Toronto airport is great – it’s really romantic to take the ferry. I also like the boutique aspect of the company, from the marketing to the in-lounge espresso machine – I have the same machines in all our offices, because I believe that people deserve to drink decent coffee. So I’m inspired to explore other Porter routes – I’m going to try Chicago and Halifax this summer.

Screen Legend Victor Loewy is a veteran of the Canadian film industry. He is Executive Chairman of Alliance Films, Canada’s leading film distribution company, and a major player in the international arena. Victor Loewy est un vétéran du cinéma canadien. It wasn’t like I was a film fanatic or anything; I was studying at McGill University and planning to go into hotel management. My best friend and I were both volunteering for the McGill Film Society, and he came up with the idea of getting new movie releases to show at Society meetings. So we talked to film companies, got movie packages together for the Society, and thought it might make a good business. We kind of lucked into it with no planning, and certainly no inside knowledge. We had no real idea that there even was a business behind the showing of movies in theatres before we started. So it was a steep learning curve. It’s been said that middle-aged people don’t go to movies anymore, that it’s all about young people and comic-book franchises now. I don’t think that’s true. If you give them the right package, 34

I travel at least once a week. I spend a lot of time in the UK with the rest of the time divided equally between Toronto and Montréal. I’ve cut down the amount of festivals I go to – now it’s Cannes, Berlin, the American Film Market and Toronto. Where does Toronto figure? It’s second or third, behind Cannes and possibly Sundance, in terms of importance, films discovered and the number of people who attend. It’s at the beginning of the fall, which is the perfect time-slot for the Oscar contenders to be wheeled out. And the weather is just wonderful – it’s that two-week window before the cold sets in.

I still have the same enthusiasm for the job. It’s a business, but it’s fun. How many other businesses get you to these beautiful towns and great restaurants for their conventions and shindigs? As for glamour – well, we deal with stars all the time, and once you know them, they’re not really that glamorous. But some can be really good fun and down-toearth. And, while I have to be objective about the movies I sell, I can still get excited about upcoming projects, finding that once-in-a-blue-moon big film that comes out of nowhere and slays the box office. That gives me more pleasure than any awards. I guess Twilight was the last one, and that wasn’t even a big hit everywhere. We have the new Quentin Tarantino movie, Inglourious Basterds [sic], coming in the fall. A good film from him is long overdue – Pulp Fiction was a life-changing movie for me. It opened my eyes to how films could be perceived and sold. It was an “art” film that had as big an impact, in its way, as Star Wars. They don’t come along every day.

Feel free to blame it on President Barack Obama – the island-born, Indonesia-educated upstart who did his real growing up on Chicago’s South Side. Armed with an equally formidable – and undeniably chic – local lady and buoyed by his vision of a far more equitable future, the youthful First Couple have injected a new sense of style and soul into America’s Heartland, something which is quickly taking root city-wide. Of course, as the playground for mid-century masters such as Mies van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright – and the place where the skyscraper was invented – Chicago has never lacked for eye-popping architecture or design. What has changed, however, is the scale and scope of Chicago’s aesthetic wonders and the ease and immediacy with which they can be experienced throughout the city. Front and centre is the just-opened Trump International Hotel & Tower – a 1,400-foot, 92-floor blackglass tower with a trio of dramatic step-backs. Now the nation’s second-tallest building after the nearby Sears Tower, the Trump literally looms over the entire city from its incomparable location on the Chicago River on land once housing the Chicago Sun-Times. Nothing if not audacious, the Trump is worth a visit even if staying elsewhere because of the vertigo-inducing views from its waterfront bar and restaurant. Despite its concrete-jungle reputation, Chicago is a city defined by its parks, from outlying Wicker and Lincoln parks to city-centre green spaces such as Millennium and Grant parks. where then-President-elect Obama graciously and rousingly delivered his acceptance speech last November 4th, and where, this summer, the city is celebrating 75 years of its Classical Music Festival. The attention is now shifting to next-door Millennium Park, home to Anish Kapoor’s eerily oversized Cloud Gate sculpture, Frank Gehry’s Pritzker Pavilion and the Chagall, Richter and Monet-filled Art Institute of Chicago. Built in the wake – and upon the rubble – of Chicago’s Great Fire of 1871, the Art Institute has just opened a gleaming new $300 million, 264,000 sq ft Modern Wing designed by Italian architecture ace Renzo Piano. Fresh from the success of his widely praised addition to San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences, Piano designed the new structure to allow the Art Institute to display a staggering nine times more contemporary art pieces, rendering it the second-largest art museum in the nation. The new Piano wing may be the most visible Chicago cultural debut this season, but it is certainly not alone. June and July welcome an important retrospective of Gustav Klimt lithographs at the Century Guild Decorative Arts. And city-wide, young creatives such as Angel Otero, Cariana Carianne and Justin Cooper are emerging as talents on a truly national level, represented by must-visit galleries such as Three Walls and Monique Meloche Gallery. While Chicago’s fashion scene has always been the Midwest’s most innovative, it took Michelle Obama to prove that local style can compete on a

En outre, de jeunes talents créatifs locaux, comme Angel Otero, Cariana Carianne et Justin Cooper, émergent au niveau national et voient leurs œuvres exposées dans des galeries telles que Three Walls et la galerie Monique Meloche. Si la mode chicagoane a toujours été en pointe dans le Midwest, il a fallu une Michelle Obama pour prouver qu’elle avait une envergure mondiale. global level. Her look – classic, elegant and functional – epitomizes the no-nonsense aesthetic espoused by the city’s top designers and ateliers. Chief among them is Maria Pinto, who emerged as Mrs. Obama’s de facto couturier-in-chief early in the campaign. While Pinto has become renowned for her precise tailoring and luxe fabrics, her North Jefferson Street shop has also helped revitalize the entire West Loop district just outside of Chicago’s commercial core – (and home to Oprah Winfrey’s now landmark Harpo Studios complex). Filled with converted loft homes, some of Chicago’s most-celebrated restaurants (Moto, Blackbird and the heavily buzzed-about meat-mecca, The Publican) and boutiques such as Pinto, Floradora and Koros, locals are calling the West Loop “Chicago’s SoHo.” But still mercifully free from big-box retailers, tourist crowds and intrusive film crews, it is more akin to Tribeca. Although slightly off the beaten path, the West Loop, with the Sears Tower looming high above, evokes a sophisticated, city-centre vibe hard to find away from Chicago’s riverfront core. Further afield, the Obamas have shed new light on Chicago’s up-and-coming Oak Park district – home to the prestigious University of Chicago. Interesting, eclectic and refreshingly integrated, Oak Park stands as an urban emblem of President Obama’s “Yes We Can” spirit, with a clutch of multiethnic cafés, restaurants and a biweekly Saturday farmers’ market, complete with a live bluegrass band in the summer. Hipper, however, are Chicago ’hoods such as Lincoln Park, Wicker Park and Bucktown. The former is unquestionably the poshest, with rambling townhouses, meticulously tended tree40

At L20, for instance, French-born (and Ducassealum) chef Laurent Gras elevates seafood to the sublime with dishes ranging from a cod, potato and caviar trifle to an unexpectedly compelling salad of crisped skate bone, pickled eggplant and cucumbers. Nearby, shops like Kaveri stock the low-key-luxe brands – from Tory Burch to Earnest Sewn – favoured by Lincoln Park’s leisure moms. You may see some pushing buggies towards cutesy bakery Sweet Mandy B for afternoon coffee and cupcakes. The scene is more youthful and cool west of the Loop over in Bucktown and Wicker Park, where second-hand bookstores and vintage clothing shops compete for real estate with fashion-forward boutiques and small-scale snackeries. There’s poetry and miles of reading at Myopic Books – a rare bastion of literary authenticity in this age of Borders and Amazon. Moments away, the future flows freely at Icream, – a just-opened dessert shop where owner Cora Shaw and her team make instant frozen treats. They mix fresh cream, natural flavours, ripe fruits and spurts of liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze it all. Next door in Bucktown, North Damen Avenue heaves with a mix of brand-name and indie boutiques equally appealing to men and women. For the former, there’s Apartment Number 9, where sister-owners Sarah and Amy Blessing offer everything from Dries Van Noten suits to Woolrich plaid shirts. Down the road, a couple of shops – p.45 and Robin Richman – stock ladylike labels such as Phillip Lim and Derek Lam along with Chicago talents like

Back downtown, below the elevated subway tracks that define Chicago’s landmark Loop, global fashion shifts to global food. Tapas and sangria flow freely at Mercat a la Planxa, a duplex Spanish supper club in the newly-renovated Blackstone Hotel. A taste of France, meanwhile, is on offer at Eve near Lake Shore Drive, with its mosaic-mirror dining room setting the tone for tony fare such as lobster sausage with chanterelles, bacon and a maple-spiked béchamel. Finally, at Vermillion, which recently debuted a Manhattan outpost partially owned by Salman Rushdie, the restaurateur, Ph.D and former McKinsey consultant Rohini Dey delivers inventive Latin-Indian dishes. Her churrasco-seared tandoori skirt steak and spicy Goan lobster is fusion fare that actually works. Back at the Trump, a curious array of the 21st century wealthy is passing through its expertly manned doors. There are African-American hiphoppers sporting designer leisure suits. Wellscrubbed WASPy families with nary a blonde hair out of place. Deep-pocketed Slavs looking to invest in the hotel’s tower-top residences. And local families – white, black, Indian and Latin – gawking at their hometown’s latest architectural milestone and the civic confidence it soaringly represents. With a strong bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics now in play, brand-name fashion and design talent, new art and architecture icons and some well-positioned fans in the White House, Chicago’s moment is now.

Life’s a Beach Thanks to the historic Burnham Plan – which celebrates its centenary this year – Chicago has been blessed with 26 miles of open Lake Michigan waterfront. There are countless ways to enjoy the lake: foot, boat and bike are just a few. For the latter, head to Bike Chicago for cycle rentals from numerous locations including Millennium Park and Navy Pier, and enjoy a leisurely ride along the well-marked, 18-mile Lake Michigan Bike Path. More low-key is a sunny afternoon spent at one of Chicago’s 29 lakefront beaches, which dot the city from end to end. Each has its own unique flavour: competitive swimmers flock to the 12th Street and Oak Street Beaches with their open-water circuits. Petlovers descend upon the Wilson Avenue/ Montrose Avenue Beach – one of two dog beaches in town – with a 10-acre sanctuary for migratory waterfowl. And everyone eventually winds up at the North Avenue Beach – Chicago’s most popular – which hosts the annual Chicago Air & Water Show.

It happens quite often these days, but the excitement never dims: the arrival of Porter’s latest aircraft from Bombardier’s huge assembly plant on the outskirts of Toronto. If you are travelling on one of our flights now, look around for a moment. This is not your ordinary propeller plane and that’s not just because of the headroom or the overhead lockers that can actually fit your luggage. It’s called the Q400. For a clue about the Q, see if there is a pin-hole in the wall section by your seat, at about eyebrow level. There’s a tiny microphone inside measuring noise levels and activating little mechanisms called ‘shakers’ up and down the cabin; they vibrate precisely to counteract the noise from the propellers. So the Q is for Quiet. But we are building our fleet exclusively with Q400s for other reasons too. It’s nimble. It will climb as steeply as a Boeing 737 jet and gets you to your destination just as quickly. Short runways suit it fine and best of all, this is one of the least thirsty commercial aircraft operating anywhere in the world. It has been a complicated gestation – who would guess that different sections of the fuselage are manufactured in places as far-flung as Northern Ireland and Japan or that the engine cowlings come from the Isle of Wight? But when the job is done, when the plane has been tripleflight tested and painted with the distinctive Porter colours, it is hard to know who is prouder: us or the folks at Bombardier.

En regardant bien, vous devriez voir un minuscule trou dans la cloison à hauteur des yeux. Il abrite un micro qui mesure le niveau sonore dans la cabine et active de petits mécanismes qui vibrent à une fréquence précise pour amoindrir le bruit des moteurs. Q comme « quiet » pour le silence. Il y a d’autres raisons qui nous font choisir exclusivement des Q400 pour notre flotte : agile, il grimpe comme un Boeing 737 et vous conduit à destination dans les mêmes délais. S’accommodant des pistes courtes, c’est en outre l’un des avions commerciaux les moins gourmands. Sa gestation est un peu compliquée : qui pourrait deviner que le fuselage est fabriqué dans des endroits aussi éloignés que l’Irlande du Nord et le Japon ou que les caissons moteurs viennent de l’île de Wight ? Une fois l’appareil testé en vol à trois reprises et peint aux couleurs de Porter, il est difficile de dire qui sont le plus fiers : nous ou les gars de Bombardier. 45

This is Bay 10, where most of the final assembly takes place – wings attached, engines fitted and fuselages ‘stuffed’ – that means putting in all the avionics and wiring. The over 200 Q400s in the air today came into being here. Talk about stuffing – it’s like insulating your attic, but the Bombardier engineers pictured below are working to keep your flying experience as peaceful as possible. They won’t let you, but if you could get out and spin one of those six-bladed propellers you would be amazed at how light they feel. Bombardier has set aside the best part of the hangar for the 700 assembly-line workers to spend a half hour each day discussing quality targets and anything else that needs improvement. Even if the plane is just half full, these engines will burn the same amount of fuel per occupied seat as your average car. But you didn’t want to drive anyway, did you? You will have seen this logo to the left of the aircraft door when you got on board today. It’s 100 years since Canada first took flight. It was February 23rd 1909 when J.A.D. McCurdy achieved powered airborne status in the Silver Dart, and, to mark his achievement the Canadian Centennial of Flight project will hold a year-long program of activities from coast to coast – and sky to sky.
