Suddenly Sudbury With easy access to unspoiled nature and an array of friendly local businesses, Sudbury brings together the best of both worlds. With upwards of 300 lakes within the city limits, the natural landscape is never far in Sudbury. Still, the resource economy that built this city looms large, with the Vale mining company’s superstack often visible. Downtown, handsome buildings attest to the city’s wealthy past. Some, like those of CPR Telegraph and Market Square, are finding new life; this pair of striking, early 20th-century structures have been repurposed for Laurentian University’s School of Architecture, launching this fall. The new campus will breathe yet more life into downtown Sudbury, affirming the city’s status as home to the perfect blend of untamed nature and sophisticated city living.

The modernist decor incorporates idiosyncratic elements, including a wooden counter from a bookstore, which owner Yoshi Kurogi covers with fresh-baked treats, like coconut cookies, whoopie pies and blueberry scones, as well as savoury items, like asparagus and Gruyère pie. To enjoy Sudbury’s leafy side, head to Bell Park, where you can stroll along the rocky edge of Ramsey Lake. The boardwalk is part of Rainbow Routes, a 15-year-old local non-profit that creates and maintains about 200 kilometres (124 miles) of urban nature trails throughout Sudbury. Follow the route through Laurentian University’s picturesque campus and you’ll catch a second trail, which offers a spectacular view of the nearby Creighton fault line. Artisan Upstairs Guest House

A few blocks from downtown, the Artisan Upstairs feels like a serene country escape. Owners Pete and Linda Lautenschlager take both elements of the B & B concept seriously. I love Lively for the hum of nature by night and the laughter of children by day – and great golf options to boot. Sudbury is the largest small town you’ll ever visit. It’s home to all things friendly: a casual wave or assistance when your bag has split open. The digital age has brought an increased desire for niche content. If you’re really into knitting, you would previously have gone out and bought a magazine once a month. Now you can listen to a podcast on knitting, watch a web show on knitting, connect with other people around the world who are into knitting or write blog posts on knitting. You can geek out on that content. When anyone can be a publisher in that way, brands are competing against other consumers for attention. So they have to work harder to engage. A great example is McDonalds, which created an online Q & A site that fielded over 10,000 questions, informing consumers while getting its messages across. My two rules for brands are know your audience and add value. You can do that with education, with inspiration or with pure entertainment, and a great content plan has a mix of all three. But it’s critical to be open and transparent about what you’re doing. As soon as the audience senses it’s a hard-sell ad, you’ve lost them. I think Red Bull is the gold standard for getting it right. It pumps out so much relevant content that it really has become a media company that just happens to sell a product. I’ve actually trained as a stand-up comedian at the Second City in Toronto. I still do the odd set, and I present the interview/sketch show “Monkey Toast.” I think the skills I’ve honed there really help in the advertising world and with the 50 or so speeches I make on creativity and innovation every year. The best stand-ups read the room, think on their feet and change their act on the fly, and they’re always aware of the possibility of failure as well as success. If a line falls flat, then the ad guy in me wants to figure out why. What’s the data? There’s always something I can learn. Whichever audience I’m dealing with, it’s all about seduction – in a non-pervy way. I fly all over – to Montréal, Newark, Chicago, Calgary, Vancouver. I live in downtown Toronto, and what I love about the Porter set-up is the carefree airport experience complemented by the first-class airline experience. And I don’t even have to buy a first-class ticket to get it. I met my wife on a Porter flight. I saw her in the lounge at Newark, and I thought, “Wow, I hope that beautiful young woman sits next to me.” Lo and behold, she did, and we started chatting on the plane. We found out that we’d both received a phys. ed. degree from Queen’s University, and that we had a mutual friend in common. I left her at the baggage carousel and got on the ferry – I certainly didn’t want to be that guy who asks for a woman’s number on a plane – and I sent a note to our friend, saying that I had just met Christy on a Porter flight and thought she was stunning. We went on a date a few weeks later, and we got married earlier this year. So Porter has a very special place in our hearts.

Mes deux conseils pour les marques sont : sachez qui est votre public et offrez-lui une valeur ajoutée. On peut faire ça via l’éducation, l’inspiration ou le divertissement pur. Un bon plan de contenu englobe ces trois éléments. Mais il faut être critique et transparent vis à vis de ce que l’on fait. Dès que le public sent que vous essayez de lui vendre quelque chose, vous le perdez. Je pense que Red Bull est le parfait exemple de ce qu’il faut faire. Cette marque produit tant de contenu pertinent qu’elle est devenue une société de médias qui vend aussi un produit. J’ai suivi une formation d’humoriste à Second City, à Toronto. Je fais quelques sketches de temps en temps et je présente l’émission/entrevue Monkey Toast. Je crois que les qualités que j’ai cultivées dans cette activité m’aident vraiment dans l’univers de la publicité et pour la cinquantaine d’interventions que je fais sur la créativité et l’innovation chaque année. Les meilleurs humoristes savent lire une salle, improviser et adapter leur spectacle. Et ils savent que la marge entre échec et succès est infime. Si une blague tombe à plat, le publicitaire qui est en moi veut savoir pourquoi. Quelles sont les données ? On peut toujours en tirer une leçon. Quel que soit mon public, il s’agit avant tout de séduction – de manière non sexuelle. Je prends l’avion tout le temps pour aller à Montréal, Newark, Chicago, Calgary, Vancouver. J’habite au centre de Toronto et j’aime l’expérience sans souci que propose Porter et le service de première classe. Tout cela sans même devoir acheter un billet de première. J’ai connu ma femme sur un vol Porter. Je l’ai aperçue dans le salon à Newark et je me suis dit : « Oh, j’espère que cette belle jeune femme sera assise à côté de moi. Et c’est ce qui est arrivé et nous avons bavardé dans l’avion. Nous avons réalisé que nous étions tous deux diplômés en physique de l’université Queen’s et que nous avions un ami commun. Je l’ai quittée au tapis roulant des bagages pour prendre le traversier. Je ne suis pas le genre de type qui demande leur numéro de téléphone à une femme rencontrée dans l’avion. J’ai envoyé un mot à notre ami en lui disant que j’avais rencontré Christy sur le vol Porter et que je la trouvais superbe. Quelques semaines plus tard, nous avons dîné ensemble et nous nous sommes mariés cette année. Merci Porter. J’aime les chemises à carreaux. C’est le mélange idéal entre habillé et décontracté. Parfait pour mon activité. On peut dire que c’est mon image de marque personnelle.

The first thing you notice about the interior of one of Cameron Air’s Cessna Caravans is that the little plane seems bigger on the inside. True, you have to duck your head to climb in through the side hatch, up past the pontoons, but once inside, you’re faced with an unexpectedly elegant scene: a bank of wide leather seats facing each other club-style, with another leather banquette at the back. beneath gives way to suburbia, then farmland, then – spreading out beneath you – Ontario’s land of endless lakes. “There are about 4,000 lakes in Ontario,” says Adam Arnold, one of the fresh-faced Cameron pilots who has become an expert at navigating them. Those lakes give Cameron Air its reason for being. The charter airline, headquartered at Porter FBO – the Porter-owned facility at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport that smaller operators can use as a home base – goes where larger airlines can’t. Its four float planes can land on the water, turning a cottage dock into the world’s most convenient airport. Since 1992 the operation has been ferrying passengers, ranging from vacationers to movie stars, chiefly to the Muskoka Lakes and Georgian Bay but has ventured out across Ontario and down to New York. The airline is a modest operation, with nine employees. “We’re a small group – it’s just like the TV show Wings,” says Arnold, who also serves as one of the airline’s maintenance supervisors. In fact, every employee at Cameron is a pilot, from founder Graham Wishart on down, each taking turns working on-call shifts, waiting to hop into the cockpit. On the hangar floor at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, another pilot is buffing the pontoon on a Caravan. Through an opening between hangars, a Porter Q400 can be seen in an adjoining bay. The Caravan can be called into service to carry small loads, but occasionally Cameron Air’s entire fleet has been called up at once to fly 22 people to a destination. Once, it was called on to ferry more than 100 people to a lakeside corporate retreat, bringing in a flotilla of planes from other charter operators to share the load. “It was like a convoy,” says Arnold. The airline got its start with a single plane flown by Wishart, who realized that there was a market for taxiing people between the island airport and

L’entreprise a débuté avec un seul avion piloté par Wishart qui a vite compris qu’il y avait un

the Muskokas in his maroon-and-cream Cessna 204. As the popularity of his service grew, so did the airline, eventually acquiring three new aircraft, including the two larger Cessna Caravans, which are equipped with quieter, more powerful turbine engines and can each fly for more than five hours, bringing more of the country into reach. The calls can come anytime. “In the summer you pretty much have to devote yourself to the job, because we’re busy constantly,” says Tom Lindsay, Cameron Air’s operations manager. Some clients book flights a year in advance, while others simply hop off a Porter flight and walk through Cameron’s front door, looking for a flight that will take them the final mile. And it’s not unknown for a private jet bearing celebrities to land at the leviathan Pearson International Airport in Toronto, meeting up with a Cameron plane that will ferry them the proverbial last mile to one of the lakes once they’ve cleared customs. (The float planes can take off and land from paved runways with the help of wheels that retract into the pontoon when they’re not needed.) For pilots, scheduling isn’t the only difference between flying a charter plane and a larger airliner. The cockpit of the former is a more hands-on workplace than that of the latter, which is highly computerized. While pilots of airliners usually use instruments, radios, GPS and computers to guide

Certains clients réservent un an à l’avance, d’autres descendent de leur appareil Porter et vont directement au bureau d’Air Cameron, en quête d’un vol qui les amènera à leur destination finale. Il n’est pas rare de voir un jet privé plein de célébrités atterrir à Pearson International à Toronto pour sauter dans une correspondance avec un avion de Cameron qui les emportera vers leur lieu de villégiature au bord d’un lac, une fois la douane franchie. Les hydravions peuvent atterrir sur une piste grâce à leurs roues rétractables. Pour les pilotes, la différence ne se résume pas aux horaires improvisés mais tient aussi aux types d’appareils utilisés. Le cockpit des Cessna est plus en prise directe avec l’extérieur que celui d’un avion de ligne qui est largement informatisé. Si les

them into landings, pilots of float planes rely more often on their hands and eyes. In the absence of an airport, pilots might ask their passengers for visible landmarks on the destination lake to guide them to the right address – a flagpole or brightly coloured boathouse, for example. Pilots can land float planes on any lake that has a nautical mile of water, which they’ll also use to safely take off. And the Cameron pilots have mastered one trick that just isn’t taught in flight school: once a float plane has landed on the water, there’s an art to navigating it successfully to the dock, steering with little rudders on the pontoons. Once the propeller is turned off, a plane on the water, with its tall wings and tail, becomes a tricky kind of sailboat. “If the winds are strong, and coming from the wrong direction, it can get pretty hairy,” says Arnold. But one of the perks for passengers flying in small aircraft is open conversation with the pilots. Mike Greer, the president of a Mississauga company that makes road grates, is a regular Cameron flyer, voyaging a couple of times a month to his cottage on the Lake of Bays. For Greer, a father of four, getting the chance to fly there with his family is a thrill – but one that once came with a certain edge, because he had always been something of a nervous flyer. That edge, however, disappeared when he started flying on charters. “You can talk to the pilots on the way there,” says Greer. “Once we started in the small plane, and especially with the kids, the pilots were so personal and interactive that we came to understand what flying is. It took the guessing away.” Not only did flying become a family rite, but as a direct result of the experience, two of Greer’s sons took up flying themselves. It’s hard to think of a higher-flying customer testimonial than that.

Une fois les moteurs coupés, avec ses grandes ailes, l’appareil devient un voilier impossible à diriger. « Si le vent est fort et souffle dans la mauvaise direction, c’est du sport », dit Arnold. L’un des privilèges dans un petit avion est de pouvoir converser avec les pilotes. Mike Greer, le président d’une entreprise de Mississauga qui fait des agrégats pour les routes, est un habitué de Cameron Air. Deux fois par mois, il se rend à son chalet sur le Lake of Bays. Étant père de quatre enfants. Greer adore prendre l’avion en famille. Si jadis il était nerveux en avion, son anxiété a disparu depuis qu’il prend des vols nolisés. « En chemin, on peut discuter avec les pilotes, dit Greer. En prenant un petit avion, surtout avec les enfants, les pilotes vous donnent toute leur attention et petit à petit on comprend mieux ce que c’est que de voler en avion. Cela rassure. » Non seulement prendre l’avion est devenu un rite familial, mais influencés par cette expérience, deux des fils Greer ont appris à piloter. Difficile de faire mieux comme témoignage de satisfaction. 19

Saugatuck is beautiful, like so many western Michigan lake towns – glowing sunsets, starry nights and leafy, winding streets lined with charming cottages – but this is a different kind of lake town. For the full Saugatuck culinary experience, take a gastro-tour with Hungry Village Tours. Its Culinary Walk explores the town’s food-focused spots, from the Olive Mill and Spice Merchants to the tasting room at local Fenn Valley Vineyards. David Geen, founder of Hungry Village Tours, who previously ran his own food and wine tour company in France and Italy, moved to Saugatuck to launch the business in 2005. “In and around Saugatuck, there are a lot of niche farmers doing cool things, as well as people who have moved here to start their own culinary businesses,” Geen says. Geen’s Delicious Drive tour visits farms in the area, highlighting the diverse local agriculture. In addition to family-owned fruit-and-vegetable farms, Geen takes tourists to Virtue Farms to see a 740-square-metre (8,000-square-foot) cider house, founded by Greg Hall. Previously the brewmaster of Chicago’s craft mega-brewery Goose Island, Hall is something of a local food and drink legend. “Just like Ox-Bow brought all these artists, Greg Hall and his posse will bring their whole crew of chefs and farmers,” says Geen. “Their endorsement, just by moving here, is going to change everything.” Mornings in Saugatuck are best spent at Uncommon Grounds, where exceptional, locally roasted, single-origin coffee is the order of the day. The thoughtful menu includes vegan and gluten-free options, like quinoa porridge, as well as fresh-pressed juices and fresh-fruit smoothies. Here, virtue is balanced by vice, with offerings like rich chocolate chip muffins, peanut butter cookies and zucchini breads, all baked on-site. Owners Stephen Keye and Guy Darienzo opened the café nearly 20 years ago, after moving to Saugatuck from Chicago. “Our focus has been the coffee,” says Darienzo. “We source the beans from three different countries and work directly with farmers.” For two decades they’ve watched the area grow, but they stress that Saugatuck’s original

spirit endures. “Everything is in place to prevent growth that is not in keeping with the rural character,” Darienzo says. “People here understand the importance of preserving that character.” Perhaps the most celebrated local food maven is Julee Rosso, co-author of the classic Silver Palate Cookbook. Growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Rosso spent many summer days in Saugatuck. For decades she tripped back and forth between New York, where she lived, and Saugatuck, where her mother lived. After she met and married Bill Miller, who was living in the area, she moved here year-round, taking ownership of the Wickwood Inn in 1981. At the Wickwood Inn, a beautifully gardened entrance leads to the front door of the 11-unit cottage, which also has a screened-in gazebo, a reading room stocked with classics and an inviting front sitting room. Years ago, when Rosso decided to wire the rooms for telephones, her guests protested; this is a place to escape everything. Rosso, a long-time resident of Manhattan’s West Village, considers Saugatuck a bohemian community. “There are people who are very committed to keeping Saugatuck the way it always was,” she says. “And yet there are always interesting things happening with art and music. It’s been an art town for 100 years.” Rosso’s inn feels like an English country cottage mixed with big-city elements, such as the wall covered with illustrator Hugo Guinness’s quirky prints. Breakfast is an indulgent affair, featuring the food that made Rosso famous, like Parmesanroasted tomato frittatas, apple and blueberry bread pudding and outstanding sticky buns. You can check back in for afternoon sweets and coffee, and lavish evening hors d’oeuvres. Rosso teaches cooking classes on weekends but acknowledges that, come summer, competing with the swimming and boating activities can be tough. The water by Saugatuck is always beckoning. A good introduction comes by way of a cruise on the Star of Saugatuck II, which runs by paddlewheel several times a day and provides, along with a history of the area, sweeping vistas of the impressive waterside homes and cottages on its way along the river, out onto the lake. to catch the sunset from Lake Michigan’s waters. Other aquatic options abound, from chartered fishing and sailing trips to kayak and paddleboard rentals through local companies like Running Rivers. If you prefer terra firma, dining and drinking with views of the river and lake is available at numerous spots throughout town. One such local favourite is Lucy’s Little Kitchen, across from the harbour on Water Street. This restaurant is the latest from Margaret and Matt Balmer, the mother-and-son team behind the Everyday People Café, an institution in the neighbouring town of Douglas that has earned fans with its fresh, homemade, local farm-sourced food. They’ve taken the same approach at Lucy’s, creating an outdoor summer spot featuring classics with a twist: won-ton crisp nachos topped with sashimi-grade ahi tuna, and burgers made from locally raised beef and stuffed with pimento cheese. A sugar-cane juice bar rounds out the offerings nicely. Alongside Lucy’s, classic eateries line the river, with mid-century signs reflecting the businesses’ authentic heritages. No establishment embodies this authenticity better than Coral Gables, which is one of the oldest family-owned destinations in the state. Once a hotel, Coral Gables is now home to three restaurants and four bars, and it’s a great place to grab a bite or a drink on the waterfront.

One of the best boat-watching views can be found at the Butler, another former hotel, just down the street from Coral Gables. The building, built in 1892, originally operated as a steam-powered mill until it was sold in 1900 and converted into a hotel. By the early 1970s, the hotel rooms were closed, but the restaurant remains a local favourite, particularly popular for the Butler burger, a half-pound patty that comes in eight variations. A half-pounder may sound filling, but there’s always room for ice cream. Saugatuck’s tooth is so sweet it can support competing cones from half a dozen ice cream shops. Two of the Kilwins franchises are located downtown, with fresh fudge and rich ice creams, but for a no-frills local mainstay, visit Charlie’s Round the Corner. Or step back in time with a stop at the Soda Fountain in the Saugatuck Drug Store, established in 1913, for a milkshake, malt or hand-creamed soda. Then, take in a Saugatuck sunset – a pretty, pink-hued affair, best seen in its unbroken beauty on the shores of Lake Michigan at Oval Beach. Settle into the sandy, dune-lined shore, where swimmers and sunbathers splash in the water by day, and families and friends grill and picnic by night. The next morning, after a leisurely breakfast in the Wickwood’s garden, catch a chain ferry to Mount Baldhead, an enormous sand dune overlooking Saugatuck and Douglas. The journey is half the fun, as you’ll ride the only remaining chain-driven ferry in the country, in use since 1838. Once you arrive at the dune, get ready to hike: it’s about 300 steps to the top. You’ve likely noticed Mount Baldhead already – the large white golf ball-like structure, which was installed many years ago by the Air Force, and then used as a weather

Avant de rentrer à Chicago, nous faisons une étape obligatoire par la Saugatuck Brewing Company, pour dîner et boire une bière fraîche. Cette brasserie artisanale, ouverte en 2005, est l’une des rares qui brasse encore sur place dans cet État : les visiteurs peuvent même y passer l’après-midi à concocter leur propre mousse. Petit inconvénient : la bière doit fermenter pendant deux ou trois semaines avant d’être mise en bouteille et emportée par son créateur. Une bonne excuse pour retourner bien vite à Saugatuck.

radar tower, is hard to miss. The view from the top is well worth the trek. On your way back to Chicago, a stop at Saugatuck Brewing Company for lunch and a freshly brewed beer is a must. The craft brewery opened its doors in 2005 and is one of the rare brew-on-premises spots in the state: visitors can even spend an afternoon concocting their own original brew. There’s only one hitch: the beer needs two to three weeks of fermentation before it can be bottled and sent home with its maker. Reason enough – not that you need it – to return to Saugatuck very, very soon.

Saint Arnould is the patron saint of brewers, and he may be casting a benevolent eye over this local microbrewery and pub. It produces 10 limited-edition beers, including the P’tit Train du Nord (known as the champagne of Mont Tremblant) and menu options – ribs marinated in beer, trout served with beer and cream sauce – certainly don’t go against the grain. Flying High Flying used to be a male-dominated world. But not anymore, and certainly not at Porter. One of our all-female crews reveals how, when it comes to careers in and out of the cockpit, the sky is no longer the limit. Aujourd’hui, l’aviation n’est plus l’apanage des hommes, notamment chez Porter. Un de nos équipages féminins révèle que leurs carrières atteignent des sommets.

Paola Fierro, Captain I’m one of a rare breed – I think there are still only about 450 women worldwide who are airline captains. I’ve wanted to do this since I was really young. When my parents and I would go on vacation every year, we’d fly, and I just loved planes. When I was 14 years old, I asked my parents if I could sign up for flying lessons, which I began the very next day. At the end of university I began my first piloting job with a private company. I then did some medevac flying, which took me all over the world – Asia, Europe, North America. I came to Porter seven years ago.

To be a pilot you need good decision-making skills, and you need to be confident and able to handle non-routine situations. It used to be a fairly macho and male-dominated world, but I think it has changed a lot. The culture here at Porter is incredibly supportive. I was their first female pilot, but now there is a high ratio of female pilots in the company. The passengers love it when there is a female pilot and all-female crew. We always get a very warm response. We four have crewed together before, and we get along really well. I’m now an Approved Check Pilot, which means I’m involved in pilot training and checking. It’s great to be bringing on a new generation – of both women and men.

Un pilote doit savoir prendre des décisions, avoir confiance en lui et savoir faire face à l’imprévu. Autrefois, c’était un univers un peu macho, mais je pense que cela a bien changé. Chez Porter, il existe une culture de solidarité. J’ai été leur première femme pilote, mais aujourd’hui il y a une forte proportion de femmes pilotes dans la compagnie. Les passagers adorent avoir une femme aux commandes et un équipage 100 % féminin. Nous avons déjà travaillé ensemble toutes les quatre et nous nous entendons bien. J’ai aussi la qualification qui me permet de prendre part à la formation des nouveaux pilotes. J’aime travailler avec la nouvelle génération – de femmes et d’hommes.

Erica Di Lena, First Officer The unofficial term for First Officer is co-pilot. What it actually means is that I’ll take turns with the Captain flying the plane. One of us is the pilot flying, and the other is the pilot monitoring, who does everything else – the paperwork, the radio contact, those kinds of responsibilities. Before Porter, I flew Twin Otters in Antarctica, flying scientists and supplies in and out of research stations for the National Science Foundation. We’d stay in tents on the ice for up to five months at a time. I saw a lot of penguins. But for me, since I was a young girl, flying has always represented romance and adventure. When I was growing up, I’d often fly back and forth to Italy with my parents. In those days the cabin crew would take children into the cockpit. I must have been four years old the first time I went into one to meet the pilots and get a little set of wings to pin to my shirt, and that fired my imagination. I couldn’t wait to be throwing those switches and turning those knobs and dials myself, so when I was old enough, I began taking a pilot’s course. Now I really don’t think of my job as work – in many ways, I’m still that young girl who loved planes. Every time we lift off, I think it’s magical and I still get goosebumps.

L’une est aux commandes, l’autre s’occupe du reste – administration, liaison radio, ce genre de choses. Avant Porter, j’étais chez Twin Otters en Antarctique. J’acheminais scientifiques et ravitaillement aux stations de recherche pour la National Science Foundation. Il nous arrivait de rester sous la tente sur la glace pendant cinq mois. J’en ai vu tant de pingouins. Dès mon plus jeune âge, les avions étaient synonymes de rêve et d’aventure. Plus grande, mes parents et moi allions souvent en Italie. À l’époque, l’équipage prenait souvent un enfant dans le cockpit. Je devais avoir 4 ans la première fois que j’ai côtoyé les pilotes et ils m’ont donné une épinglette avec des ailes. Cela a titillé mon imagination. J’aurais bien voulu toucher tous ces boutons et leviers. Dès que je l’ai pu, j’ai pris des cours. Aujourd’hui, je ne considère pas mon occupation comme du travail – d’une certaine manière, je suis restée la petite fille qui aimait les avions. Je trouve que chaque décollage est magique et j’en ai toujours la chair de poule.

Graciela Castro, Purser As Purser, I oversee all the paperwork that needs to be signed off on from the flight deck, and I’m also in charge of the team of flight attendants. I started at Porter as a Customer Service Representative in June 2009, and that really made me appreciate the way the company feels very family-oriented, that there’s a closeness and familiarity between staff and passengers. I’ve worked for larger airlines before, and Porter feels a lot more personal. I love to travel, and once you become part of the aviation industry, it sort of gets into your blood. Every day at this job is different – meeting all the new challenges really keeps me on my toes, and it keeps me interested. You build great relationships with the people at Porter – it’s a very close-knit community on that little island. And there’s definitely a different dynamic when we have an all-female crew. There’s a feeling of empowerment – girls are doing it! I feel like our women pilots are daytime heroes. They’re awesome! Dawn Evans, Flight Attendant Passengers sometimes write in and say how much they’ve enjoyed flying with me, but what that boils down to, for me, is that I’ve found my niche. I’ve been with Porter for just under three years, and this is my first airline job, but my father is a pilot, so flying has been a familiar milieu to me throughout my life. The airline industry has taken many knocks for a while, with people saying that you no longer get a smile with the purchase of a ticket, but Porter is changing that perception. If my passengers aren’t walking off the plane having had an amazing experience, I feel like I haven’t done my job to the fullest. You learn people’s habits and preferences, and you have to know how to read them and respond accordingly. You quickly become an astute judge of character. There’s a special buzz with an all-female crew. I’ve even had old-school gentleman pilots come on board as passengers and get caught up in the excitement of it. I find that with a female crew, there’s instant bonding because it’s still a rarity. There’s a feeling of here we go, this is going to be fun.

Dawn Evans, hôtesse Parfois, les passagers écrivent pour dire combien ils ont aimé voler avec moi, mais l’important est que j’ai trouvé ma vocation. Je suis chez Porter depuis un peu moins de trois ans et c’est mon premier emploi de ce type. Ceci dit, mon père était pilote alors c’est un milieu que je connais bien. Le secteur a été pas mal critiqué, on disait que le sourire était en supplément lorsque vous achetiez votre billet. Mais Porter change cette image. Si mes passagers ne descendent pas de l’avion en disant qu’ils ont vécu une expérience unique, je me sens frustrée. On apprend les habitudes et les préférences des passagers, il faut les deviner et réagir en conséquence. On devient vite un bon juge du caractère des gens. Avec un équipage féminin, il y a toujours une ambiance unique. Parmi nos passagers, j’ai même vu des pilotes de la vieille école se laisser gagner par l’excitation ambiante. Avec les femmes, il y a un esprit d’équipe instantané parce que c’est si rare. On se dit tout de suite que ça va être un vol agréable.
