West is best The West seems to cast a spell all around the world, from California to Connemara. It’s easy to see why its magnetic powers work in Wales. Visitors are drawn to the splendours of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, a natural paradise that covers the entire tip of South West Wales. Coastal beauty is something of a speciality in these parts, for the region also contains sandy Carmarthen Bay and the spectacular Gower Peninsula. It’s a coastline of rare quality - or, to be more accurate, qualities, for it’s filled with vast beaches, tiny coves, coastal walks, seals and seabirds, picturesque resorts, fishing harbours, nature reserves and uninterrupted natural beauty. Swansea is Wales’ ’city by the sea’. It’s a fresh, adventurous place with an impressive maritime quarter that has completely transformed the old waterfront. Traditional Wales maintains its hold in the countryside, a restful, rural landscape of farm and forest dotted with market towns and peaceful villages. It’s a countryside dipped in many shades of green, ranging from the rich rivermeadows of the Tywi and Teifi valleys to the wind-tossed heaths in the wild mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park. South West Wales also entices visitors on the strength of its distinctive culture and heritage. You’ll see and hear the Welsh language on your travels - along of course, with English. The ancient Welsh tongue is part of a rich heritage that also includes Roman and medieval historic sites, and Celtic and Arthurian myth and legend ... not to mention that legendary Welsh welcome, expressed in the greeting ‘Croeso’. REFRESHING EXPERIENCES

Afan Forest, Swansea Bay*

On foot, by bike This part of Wales is filled with refreshing fresh-air experiences. It’s wonderful walking and cycling country, with paths, routes and trails that appeal to everyone from those just seeking gentle exercise to enthusiasts of the challenging ‘Great Outdoors’. Walkers have the pick of exhilarating high country routes, pine-scented forest trails and leafy riverside walks. In the western Brecon Beacons there’s the brooding Black Mountain - a true wilderness. Pembrokeshire’s Preseli Hills are renowned for their unbroken horizons and wide, open spaces. Carmarthenshire’s rolling hills and farmlands are criss-crossed by enchanting rural trails, while networks of waymarked paths weave their way through the thick evergreen woodlands of Brechfa Forest and the Neath and Afan valleys.

But pride of place must go to the seashore. South West Wales’ coastal walks are truly exceptional. From Swansea, it’s just a short hop to superb walking on breathtaking clifftop paths along the Gower Peninsula. Further west, there are more superlative sea views along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, South West Wales’ crowning glory.

Oxwich Bay, Swansea Bay*

Millennium Coastal Park, Carmarthenshire

Clyne Valley, Swansea, Swansea Bay

Unlike other parts of the UK, it’s also exceptionally cyclistfriendly. Quiet country lanes and meandering river valleys remain blissfully free from heavy traffic. Specially created cyclepaths and scenic routes abound. For off-road cycle enthusiasts there are some of the trails that have led to Wales being ranked alongside California for the quality of its mountain biking.

The 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path is one of Europe’s finest coastal walks, taking in rugged headlands, sandy bays and sheltered inlets. Most visitors choose short sections - and it’s all made very easy when you hop on and off the local ‘ride and walk’ coastal bus services.

There’s a guaranteed adrenaline rush for mountain bikers when they tackle ‘The Wall’, part of an extensive network of white-knuckle singletrack trails at the Afan Forest Park. There are also dedicated offroad routes in the Brechfa Forest.

Ride some - or all - of the southwestern section of the Celtic Trail, a cycle route that begins as soon as you enter Wales at the Severn Bridge. This superb signposted trail makes the most of the region’s scenic, traffic-free roads.

The hills around Llandovery are the haunt of the rare red kite. You may spot it on a walk around the Dinas Hill Bird Reserve, Rhandirmwyn. And see if you can find the cave of Twm Sion Cati, the ‘Welsh Robin Hood’.

You’re welcome to pedal along the promenade at Swansea, it’s the most popular cycle path in Wales. Llanelli’s Millennium Coastal Park is another gentle cyclepath ideal for enjoying sea views and seafront gardens.

MAGNIFICENT COASTLINE Gower, Swansea Bay*

This part of Wales has always had close links to the sea. There are hundreds of miles of magnificent coastline, fringed by clear blue seas, wide open bays, placid Fishguard in Pembrokeshire is waterways and crashing surf. Swansea was host to The Atlantic Challenge once a major world port, and the maritime International Festival of Seamanship in July 2004 tradition continues in its vibrant modern marina. Tenby’s Welsh name - Dinbych y Pysgod (‘Little Fort of the Fish’) reflects a past life, and at tiny Solva emigrants set sail across the Atlantic to America.

‘Coasteering’ Pembrokeshire

Lower Fishguard, Pembrokeshire

On the waterfront This maritime heritage has left a legacy of picturesque ports and quaysides where holiday craft nowadays drop anchor. Cliff-backed harbours at Saundersfoot and Mumbles, for example, bristle with the masts of sleek yachts. There are little nautical gems tucked away around almost every headland - places like Porthgain, Stackpole and Porthclais, which have hardly changed since their seafaring heydays. Modern, purpose-built marinas at Swansea, Burry Port, Milford Haven and Neyland add to the scene, while harbours like Dale, in the sheltered Milford Haven and Mumbles on Swansea Bay have developed into thriving centres for all kinds of watersports.

At a Glance:

The region’s west-facing beaches attract big waves and a young, hip surfing crowd. Llangennith on the Gower Peninsula together with Newgale and Freshwater West (dubbed ‘Fresh West’) in Pembrokeshire are just three of the South West’s many spectacular venues. Windsurfers are another common sight, skipping over the waves at speeds up to 80 kmph. But for the ultimate adrenaline rush, try coasteering, invented in Pembrokeshire and catching on in a big way, it involves cliff climbing and the best bit - leaping into the water.

Watersports aren’t just confined to the coast. At Llandysul there’s an international canoe slalom course where the River Teifi tumbles through a rocky gorge. Pembrokeshire’s Llys-y-Fran reservoir is a popular venue for sailing, canoeing and windsurfing.

The silent upper reaches of the Milford Haven waterway are known as the Daugleddau. The sheltered sailing waters in this maze of wooded, reedy creeks are in calm contrast to the open ocean at the mouth of the Haven.

Marina, Swansea, Swansea Bay

You can go underwater too! Undersea Pembrokeshire is as spellbinding as the land. Scuba divers can explore reefs, caves, marine nature reserves and over 500 wrecks from centres like St Davids and Little Haven.

Swansea Bay

Go coast-hopping by kayak or canoe. As an aquatic version of walking, many kayakers follow the coast, enjoying the challenge of the surf and tide, or gliding through the gentler waters of sheltered estuaries and inlets.

ENDLESS CHOICES Langland Bay, Gower, Swansea Bay

It’s your choice When you cast your eyes across Pembrokeshire’s dramatic seashores or Carmarthenshire’s gentle, green hills you’ll understand why this part of Wales attracts so many artists and craftspeople. The magic will work for you too - these inspiring surroundings are perfect for brushing up on your painting skills, or learning more about photography or natural history. The pure, natural environment is stunning, so don’t forget to pack your binoculars. From Pembrokeshire’s cliffs - a carpet of pink and yellow coastal flowers - you can watch seals basking on the rocks while teeming colonies of seabirds fill the skies above. Carmarthenshire is home to the rare red kite. This majestic, fork-tailed bird of prey has come back from near-extinction in the undisturbed hills around Llandeilo and Llandovery - so much so that the area has become known in recent years as Kite Country. The Afan, Neath and Lliw valleys in Swansea Bay, flanked with woodland walks and plunging waterfalls, are another natural paradise.

At a Glance:

There’s an endless choice of activity breaks and special interest holidays on offer. You can go golfing, horse riding or birdwatching, or take a course in painting, pottery, woodworking or even puppet making. And it’s all so easy to organise, for many places offer special all-inclusive packages.

Tenby, Pembrokeshire

Coast and country offer superb sea and game fishing. You can go fishing for cod or bass from big beaches along Gower or Carmarthen Bay, or hunt for blue shark and porbeagle on a deepwater boat trip from Pembrokeshire. Inland, there’s unrivalled fishing for sea trout - called ‘sewin’ in these parts - and excellent salmon fishing too.

Carmarthenshire

Marloes, Pembrokeshire*

Riding and trekking centres throughout the area welcome experts and beginners alike - and you’ll have the rare opportunity to go riding along a beach in beautiful spots like Gower’s Three Cliffs. And golfers are spoilt for choice, with a superb range of great-value links and country courses that extend a warm welcome to visiting players.

The clifftop Pennard Golf Club on the Gower Peninsula is known as the ‘links with the sky’. This superb course is typical of the quality golf available throughout the region - until recently a ‘best kept secret’, but not any more following the announcement that South Wales will host the Ryder Cup in 2010.

There are three Kite Country centres at Llandovery, Pumsaint and Llyn Llech Owain Country Park (near Cross Hands) where you can learn more about this magnificent bird of prey.

Fishermen can see how it was done 2,000 years ago. The ancient coracle, a tiny, one-man craft resembling an upturned umbrella, is still used on the waters of the Rivers Teifi and Tywi to catch salmon and trout.

Pembrokeshire has some of the largest colonies of seabirds in the world - so it’s not surprising that the National Park’s official symbol is the razorbill.

HERITAGE, HISTORY, MYTH & LEGEND Carreg Cennen, Carmarthenshire*

Legendary times There’s enough heritage and history, myth and legend in South West Wales to fill an entire library. But where do you begin? In the distant past, perhaps, when prehistoric settlers built mysterious stone monuments? Or with the coming of the Roman conquerors, Celtic saints or medieval warlords? It’s no exaggeration to say that there’s history over almost every hill. The skeletal remains of Pentre Ifan burial chamber in the Preseli Hills take us back to the mists of time. Celtic hillforts built over 2,000 years ago crown many a horizon. Roman remains - camps, roads, an amphitheatre and unique gold mine, are scattered across the landscape. And the Age of Saints, which marked the beginning of Christianity in Britain, has left a legacy of spiritually charged religious Gower is full of fascinating shrines. But the one monument that dominates above all other is the medieval castle. Wales is known as the ‘Land of Castles’. There’s an unprecedented number here, and many of the finest are to be found in the South West. Not that history ended in medieval times. This part of Wales was also touched by the Industrial Revolution - the contribution it made to kick-starting the modern world is recalled at preserved sites and museums.

It’s not just the many monuments that bring the past to life. This is the world of King Arthur and Merlin the Magician, a land populated by knights, spirits and medieval healers and charged with heroic deeds and strange encounters. So take your time and delve into the south west’s library of legendary tales as well as places.

Untangling myth and legend. Find out more about: Merlin’s links with Carmarthen and Merlin’s Hill; Twm Sion Cati, the ‘Welsh Robin Hood’, who hid in a cave from the Sheriff of Carmarthen in the hills above Llandovery; the amazing cures of the medieval Physicians of Myddfai; the ‘bluestones’ from the Preseli Hills that ended up somehow - at world-famous Stonehenge hundreds of miles away.

Pembrokeshire was known as Gwlad hud a lledrith (‘The land of magic and enchantment’) in the Mabinogion, the earliest collection of Welsh stories dating back over a thousand years. It hasn’t changed much.

The purple-stoned cathedral at St Davids is one of Christendom’s great shrines - in medieval times two pilgrimages to St Davids equalled one to Rome.

Pumsaint is the only place where we know, for certain, that the Romans mined for gold in Britain. Kidwelly Castle not only looks like a Hollywood film set - it often serves as one too. Film-makers love this extraordinarily well-preserved 12th-century fortress.

Aberdulais Falls in the Vale of Neath combines industrial heritage with great natural beauty. Set beside waterfalls in a wooded gorge, it’s one of Britain’s earliest metal-producing sites.

A SENSE OF PLACE

13

St Davids Cathedral, Pembrokeshire

A living culture It’s one of the great joys of travel to discover somewhere with a strong ‘Sense of Place’. It may come from the landscape or the people, the local culture or the atmosphere.

The Welsh Language As well as speaking English, many people also speak Welsh fluently in South West Wales. One of Europe’s oldest languages and closely related to other Celtic languages, Welsh is very much alive and flourishing and spoken widely, particularly in areas such as Carmarthenshire and North Pembrokeshire. It’s a uniquely expressive, highly lyrical language and as well as hearing it spoken you’ll also have the opportunity to see it alongside the English language on the road signs and place names throughout Wales.

Dylan’s Boathouse, Laugharne, Carmarthenshire*

In South West Wales, it springs from all of these ... and more. The great writer Dylan Thomas captured it in his poems and short stories. He wrote warmly about Swansea, his hometown, and Carmarthenshire’s green ‘fields of praise’. Dylan was a master of the English language, yet his work was influenced by the cadences and rhythms of the Welsh tongue. You’ll still hear Welsh spoken here, from Swansea’s busy streets to the peaceful villages of north Pembrokeshire. It’s part of a living culture that embraces traditional and contemporary, ancient and modern. It’s a culture that expresses itself in the arts and crafts, music and entertainment. Woollen mills - like Tregwynt near Fishguard - produce weaves that feature ancient Celtic motifs in a fresh, innovative fashion. Galleries and craft workshops are thick on the ground. There’s a vast variety of venues - folk and dance clubs, cosmopolitan theatres and country shows, big-time festivals and local fairs. Between them, they serve up a programme that has something for everyone - the latest music, the glitziest productions, Shakespeare in the park, classical music in the cathedral, and performances of Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece, ‘Under Milk Wood’.

To see a number of artists and craftspeople in close proximity, go to thriving centres like Solva, Narberth, Tenby, St Davids, Stepaside and Llandovery.

South West Wales’ movie credits are pretty impressive. Catherine Zeta Jones (whose son, incidentally, is called Dylan) comes from Swansea. Sir Anthony Hopkins hails from Port Talbot, while the late, great Richard Burton was born close by in the Afan Valley.

The soaring harmonies of a male-voice choir in full flight are an emotional as well as musical experience. There are around 20 choirs in the region and you can usually listen in on rehearsal nights as well as attend performances. Ask at Tourist Information Centres for details.

The revamped Museum of the Welsh Woollen Industry in the Teifi Valley reopened in summer 2003. It’s a working museum where imaginative displays bring this historic rural industry to life.

BEAUTIFUL GARDENS

This part of Wales has always been known for its greenery. With the opening of the Middleton, the National Botanic Garden of Wales near Carmarthen in 2000, it became even greener. Everything about this breathtaking garden is on a monumental scale. Covering a vast swathe of the beautiful Vale of Tywi, it’s the first garden of its kind to be created in Britain for over 200 years. And what a creation! This ‘Garden for a New Age’ contains everything from Mediterranean flora to typical Welsh plants, imaginative landscaping to astonishing architectural features.

Green spaces The Vale of Tywi has become a horticultural hot spot, for it is also home to Aberglasney (the magical garden ‘lost in time’), the graceful landscaped parklands of Dinefwr near Llandeilo, and the formal terraces and woodlands of Gelli Aur (the ‘Golden Grove’) Country Park.

There are six different Colby Woodland Garden at Amroth is an idyllic ‘garden by the sea’, with paths through ancient forest and flowerbeds and glimpses of the for ‘green’ Pembrokeshire coast and Carmarthen Bay. Upton Castle Grounds near Pembroke and Picton Castle Gardens, Haverfordwest, are two more gems - and don’t miss Bosherston’s Lily Ponds on Pembrokeshire’s south coast, a trio of lilycovered lakes fringed by woodland. Swansea is renowned for its city parks, including Clyne with its month-long garden festival each May.

Swansea’s many gardens include the fabulous Clyne Gardens with its national collections, Singleton Park and its botanical gardens and the unique glass pyramid, Plantasia, in the heart of the shopping centre.

The region’s Country Parks are great places in which to enjoy a day out. Margam and Pembrey, two hugely popular venues, boast a host of family attractions. Llyn Llech Owain, Llys-y-Fran and the Afan Forest offer excellent outdoor activities.

Little and large. Aberglasney is an intimate little garden. Untouched and forgotten for centuries, only now are its secrets being revealed. It’s completely different to the vast National Botanic Garden just across the valley.

RESTLESS BEAUTY

17

Swanlake Beach, Pembrokeshire (Norman Hughes Design, Tenby)

Along the coast Wherever you stay, you’ll never be far from glorious beaches and scenic coastal walks. Here’s a brief snapshot of what you’ll find. Aberavon on Swansea Bay is the first beach on the way into the region - its sands are backed by a newly refurbished seafront. From here, the sandy arc of the Bay curves around to Mumbles at the gateway to the Gower Peninsula, an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. If you like undiluted coastal splendour, then you’ll love Gower’s spectacular cliffs and sheltered sandy bays.

At a Glance:

Don’t think you can explore this coastline in a few days. Take a look at the map and you’ll see that South West Wales’ seashore is an intricate, indented pattern of bays and peninsulas, beaches and coves, estuaries and headlands. It’s a restless beauty that changes by the mile. The little resort of Port Eynon on Gower, for example, is close to dizzying cliff scenery. Marloes beach in the far west of Pembrokeshire is cradled by a rugged, rocky promontory.

Three Cliffs Bay, Gower, Swansea Bay*

Carmarthen Bay has almost as much sand as the Sahara. Endless beaches fringe a green coastline, interrupted only by the lovely estuaries of the Tywi, Taf and Gwendraeth rivers. Pembrokeshire is the jewel in the crown. We make no apologies for repeating the fact that it’s Britain’s only coastal-based National Park. It’s also amongst the finest stretches of coastal natural beauty in Europe, with a rich wildlife to match. Stay at one of its charming resorts - Tenby, Broad Haven, St Davids or Newport to name but four - and discover award-winning beaches, seabird colonies, exhilarating coastal paths and picturesque harbours.

South West Wales’ coastline invariably scoops up the awards. At the last count, over 40 of its beaches had awards for the cleanliness of the water and attractiveness of the surroundings. Not only that - over half of these have the very top accolade, the European Blue Flag award.

Wales’ longest beach is Cefn Sidan with 15km of sand, sand and more sand. Pendine, across Carmarthen Bay, isn’t far behind. This 13km beach was once used for land speed record attempts.

There’s more spectacle offshore. Hop onto a boat and visit Caldey Island from Tenby or Ramsey Island from St Davids. The wildlife reserves of Skomer and Skokholm islands - named after Norse invaders over a millennium ago - are accessible from Martin’s Haven on the Marloes Peninsula.

Swansea Bay has over 70 named coves, bays and beaches - from the 11km sweep of sand linking Mumbles and Swansea to the breathtaking views of Wormshead at Rhossili.

Two of Pembrokeshire’s most impressive natural features are the seabird colony of Stack Rocks and the great sea arch known as ‘The Green Bridge of Wales’. They can be seen from the cliffs south-west of Pembroke.

You’ll eat very well in South West Wales, whatever the surroundings - from country inns serving tasty bar meals to fine dining at awardwining restaurants.

Farmhouse accommodation means just that - you’ll stay on a working farm and have a first-hand glimpse into rural life. But you won’t get muddy shoes. Many farmhouses now offer standards that match and sometimes exceed - those of good hotels.

South West Wales is full of local flavour, superb fish and shellfish from crystal rivers and clear Atlantic waters, the well-rounded taste of salt-marsh lamb, and juicy Welsh Black beef from cattle that graze on rich, natural pastures.

Look out for the Welcome Host badge on your travels. This Wales Tourist Board symbol of hospitality and good service reflects the country’s tradition for friendliness. It’s open to everyone, from taxi drivers to hotel staff.

The South West’s farmhouse cheeses are fantastic. Taste them and you’ll see why they win international awards. At places like Llangloffan in Castle Morris, Pembrokeshire, you can watch the entire process.

Tenby, Pembrokeshire

May to September in Swansea Bay sees the Swansea Bay Summer Festival with its vast selection of events in some of the best seafront locations (www.swanseabayfestival.net). Carmarthenshire's festivals include Merlin's Magic Festival (19th June), Laugharne Arts Festival (30th July - 8th August) a week of music, theatre, arts and literary events in the ancient township of Laugharne the inspirational home of poet Dylan Thomas. Food festivals throughout the year such as June‘s Pembrokeshire Fish Week (www.visitpembrokeshire.co.uk), October‘s Swansea Market Food Festival (www.swansea.gov/food) and the region’s many farmers markets and food fayres give you a chance to taste the best of South West Wales’ fantastic local produce and cuisine. Our Gardens are living venues offering everything from the experience of classical music in the Great Glasshouse of Middleton, the National Botanic Garden in Carmarthenshire (www.middletongardens.org) and summer opera at Aberglasney Gardens (www.aberglasney.org) to the Carmarthenshire Garden Festival with garden displays, demonstrations, gardening goods at the United Counties Showground Carmarthen (22nd23rd May) and ‘Clyne In Bloom’, a month long award winning floral display, at Swansea’s Clyne Gardens (www.swansea.gov.uk). The natural ‘garden’ of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the venue for a range of events all year, from seal watching to guided walks and sand sculpting (www.pembrokeshirecoast.org) Sporting events also feature strongly on the South West Wales calendar, from watersports competitions such as The Atlantic Challenge International Festival of Seamanship (July, Fishguard, Pembrokeshire) to the International Sheepdog trails (September, Carmarthenshire) and Wales Rally GB (September) which uses the forests of the area as a spectacular backdrop.
