Objectives and background for this conference Objectives – To give an initial introduction to design for people who are very little acquainted with the subject. – Hence, this is not a course but rather a friendly talk about design. – It is not the final truth about design: it should motivate you to search further – At the end of the conference, the participants of the session should • Understand the basic concepts of design • When interested, they should be able to explore design in the large (the common elements between domains) and in more detail, by domain (for example, software design or mechanical design) • When dealing with a specific design method to be learned, understand what the method is about.

Why is design important? • We live in a designed world • Our needs are changing: « better, faster, cheaper, … nicer, …» • People sense their capability to change the world and want to do it – By altruism – To show that they can do – In search of a new challenge – In search of profit/personal wealth

• Sometimes, at the risk of major disruptions – Accidents – Social disruptions – Envrionment hasards – … – Hence, is increasingly important to anticpate In itmost projects, there is an increased for what anticipation and control on the result. What will be dealt with during this session?

• Objects or artefacts: artefacts

come into being through projects. In the case of multiple instances (series) a specific production system may be used or even design, developed and put into place.

• Projects: small scale initiatives, medium-sized or large projects form the context for design

• People: projects, design and even objects and artefacts do no exist without people. It is esential to understand the role people play in projects and in design

• And design, the main topic of the conference?

• Design: is the activity, in a project that refines the objective and determines what has to be build
