PROJECT BACKGROUND

Initiated and managed by the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy (MEDDE) in 2011

Will help report under Article 17 of the Directive 92/43/EEC on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora

Will be useful in many projects of the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy as a tool to improve knowledge and monitoring of French semi-natural and natural habitats VEGETATION MAPPING IN EUROPE

FOUR MAIN AXES

State of the art reviews Preliminary mapping Habitat modeling

Vegetation typology Phytosociology (french vegetation prodrome) Landscape phytosociology (regional catalogue of series and geoseries)

CarHAB PROJECT GOALS FOR VEGETATION MAPPING At a scale of 1/25 000 (matching other French large scale data: RGE®)

Minimum object area : 5000 m² Homogeneous specifications throughout metropolitan France Urban and artificial areas will be excluded Intensive farming areas will bear specific information (series) Nomenclature will be based on dynamico-catenal phytosociology VEGETATION MAPPING IN EUROPE

02. PRELIMINARY MAPPING

VEGETATION MAPPING IN EUROPE

16/10/2012

10/28

A TWO LAYERS PRELIMINARY MAP A layer describing the appearance of the vegetation created using techniques of photo-interpretation and remote sensing

A layer of spatialized environmental variables influencing biotopes built using environmental modeling

Combination methods between these two layers are still to be defined

Preliminary map will be allocated between three partners VEGETATION MAPPING IN EUROPE

PRELIMINARY MAP NOMENCLATURE Working group on preliminary map nomenclature Chairman: L. Commagnac (IGN)

High altitude open environments nomenclature

Forest nomenclature Chairwoman: F. Benest (IGN)

Chairwoman: S. Luque (IRSTEA)

Low altitude open environments nomenclature Chairman: B. Etlicher (EVS-ISTHME)

Bring scientists of different fields together (GIS, remote sensing, phytosociology, etc.) and make them share the same goal VEGETATION MAPPING IN EUROPE

Bare soils (rocks)

OTHER ENVIRONMENT TYPES

Bare soils (rocks) are already detected by IRSTEA of Grenoble

Coastline and open water environments will be obtained from the hydrological layer of the BDTopo® produced by the IGN

IGN will put together the “appearance” layers VEGETATION MAPPING IN EUROPE

WORK ORGANIZATION Preliminary map will be delivered per county (administrative unit)

Production takes into account homogeneous ecological area

Ecological partition of the territory (Dupias et Rey) is used for work on environmental layer and final nomenclature (regional catalogue of series and geoseries) VEGETATION MAPPING IN EUROPE
