How to reserve your hotel room at Hotel Cumulus, Joensuu, Finland     

The organizing school Joensuu University Teacher Training School has made preliminary reservations for you at Hotel Cumulus in Joensuu. The hotel is centrally located in Joensuu and within a walking distance from the University Campus, about 10 min. We would like everyone to make their own reservation by the 17th of February 2013 latest. Until then the preliminary reservation is valid. CEDEFOP and our national agency have given instructions that all participants should be at the same hotel – that facilitates several activities. You will be able to make your reservation by email or by telephone. All participants are responsible for their own hotel fees, which is covered by your national scholarship. The price is (a special price for the University/study visit). o One person room / night 92 euros including breakfast o The hotel is new – opened in 2009. The rooms are nice and comfortable in Scandinavian style.

Travelling       

You must take a travel insurance before you leave – it is very necessary. About your travel arrangements. Your first destination in Finland is usually Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Helsinki is the capital of Finland. Joensuu can be reached by air or by train. The flight from Helsinki to Joensuu is about one hour. The airport is just outside Joensuu. If you prefer to fly to Helsinki and take the train from Helsinki to Joensuu, that is also possible. Finnish trains are comfortable. The journey is about five (5) hours. Please, make your flight reservations to Joensuu, if you fly. The distance between Helsinki and Joensuu is nearly 500 km. Your local travel agent will be able to arrange your flight tickets and the train timetables you will find at http://www.vr.fi/en/index.html Finnish National Rail pages. When you arrive at Joensuu airport, you will be able to take a taxi into town. The distance is about 9 km. The distance between the railway station and the hotel is about 1,5 km.

Some items to note   



 

You will receive the final programme on Sunday the 17th of March and also other materials and documents and we shall have a dinner together. We are asking a small amount of euros to cover some meals and transport and some other costs - 60 euros. The sum will be collected in cash on Sunday evening when we meet. The University School and the Finnish National Agency support your visit. During the study visit, the group has to prepare and decide how to organize the writing of a group report. The coordinators are chosen on Sunday at the arrival meeting. One copy to the study visit organizer, one copy to CEDEFOP and one copy to your national agency, one for us and one for the Finnish National Agency. You will have a possibility to work at Länsikatu School, where you have computers available for processing. All participants should prepare a short presentation of a topic of their choice e.g. the educational system, teacher education of their country or of something of their special interest in their own sphere of interests in education. Power Point presentations or Pecha Kuchas are recommended. The presentation should not exceed 10 min. Pecha Kuchas are 6min 40s. You will find information on the net how to prepare a Pecha Kucha. There are several representatives from some countries – could you perhaps do at least partly something together? The presentations are on different days during the study visit week. Please send your presentation beforehand to Eija Liisa, if possible. We shall share the materials. All participants together prepare a morning assembly on Friday the 22nd of March for the Länsikatu School pupils, grades preschool1-6, ages 6-13 yrs, nearly 400 children. You can decide on the way you present it, but it should not exceed 15 min – so you have several 3

days to plan it together during the study week or develop ideas before. Perhaps you can plan it together before the study week. ICT available. For Thursday evening bring something from your own country to put on the table for all to taste. There will be some Finnish teachers of our school participating as well in the evening. If you would like to prepare some programme, songs, a dance etc. for the evening that would be enjoyable. In the mornings either teachers or students will come and meet you in the hotel lobby and guide you to the schools and the University. Please make sure you are at the hotel lobby at the informed time! See the programme later!

Clothing and weather   

The weather can vary enormously. One day it can be sunny and +2 centigrades (but you still need warm clothes because of the snow), the next day windy, snowing, sleet, wet and nasty and much below 0-centigrades. You will need a warm and windproof coat, a warm hat, gloves, a warm jumper, boots, an umbrella etc. so you should be prepared to almost anything. In March 2012 we had all these weather types during the study visit week. You will be walking to and from your Hotel Cumulus. Therefore it is important to have warm, comfortable and non-slippery winter boots that are suitable for winter conditions and snowy and icy streets and roads. The distance is only four blocks.
