Recent events, historical & cultural references mentioned in the documents, questions raised by the topic, debates: (+ anything you think is necessary to add, personal knowledge and /or comments for example) -Prohibition was introduced in 1919 went in effect one year later : it is an era during which people weren’t allowed to transport, to produce or to sell alcohol. It ended in 1933. -Bruce Springsteen’s concert in East Berlin in 1988. It was really important for the youth of East Germany in the 80’s. It is said to have “cracked the wall” as it made East Germans eager for more freedom. -Medical marijuana authorized in Arkansas (Nov. 8th 2016). The Obama administration gave the waver despite the fact state legalization is in contradiction with federal laws (cannabis is still illegal on a federal level); but the reaction of Trump’s administration is still uncertain. (28 states : medical use legal / 9 states : recreational use legal) -prison policy: radical change over the last 40 year. Reagan was shutting down prisons and created prisoners rights. Now America is the country with the largest prison population in the world, and 2/3 of them are African-American. Some prisons are now property of corporations, there’s money to be made. And many of the prisoners are locked up for drug abuse. -Despite all the negative common opinions against cannabis, it can actually relieve people from pain (glaucoma, PTSD…), without making them addicted, no lethal threat. It’s also a good alternative for drugs that have strong side effects on the body and on the mind. (the origin of the ban on cannabis in the US: read an explanation provided by two physicians here)
