Oscar : Asghar Farhadi is an Iranian film director invited to the American Oscars but was unwilling to go to the US because of the new immigration policy. He refused to be given a visa while other Iranians are unable to fly to the US.

Protest sign on Women march : A woman is holding a protest sign “My arms are tired from holding this sign since the 1960’s” during the women march in Washington. This march is a response to the president election and power, just like protests against the Vietnam war in 1960’s.

Recent events, historical & cultural references mentioned in the documents, questions raised by the topic, debates: The Original American protest (1773) : The American people was fed up with buying tea from India, through a British company ; that’s why a tea cargo was vandalized. It represents the very first great protest against the United Kingdom, and the first step in the fight for independence.

Women’s suffrage (18th Century until now): A movement that is still a burning issue. Women have been demonstrating for centuries to increase their rights.

Civil Rights (1963) :

A march in Washington that gathered 200,000 thousand people, from minorities (especially African Americans). At the end of this, Martin Luther King pronounced his famous speech : “I Have a Dream”. That lead to the end of racial segregation and the Civils Rights Act in 1964.

Antiwar (1969) : A demonstration during Nixon’s presidency against Vietnam war. It constituted the biggest protestation movement ever, even if it was a failure (war didn’t stop).

Occupy Wall Street (2011) : A suite of protests and occupations near Wall Street, against greed and corruption in the government and financial system. This movement spread around the world, with its famous motto : “We are the 99%“

Obama commutes Chelsea Manning’s sentence (2016) : The whistleblower Bradley Manning is responsible of one of the biggest data dumps in history. In 2010, he broadcast documents in which we can see US Forces shooting down Iraqi journalists and civilians in 2007. He became a woman in jail and has been granted by president Obama.

Truth and lies (synthesis) : The film Truth shows how two journalists, who revealed the fact that president Bush Sr used his privileges to avoid his son being sent to Vietnam, were fired and vilified. Great events in 2016. Trump’s election and Brexit. Those political decisions prove people are fed up with the elite, and how they can be blinded by the media and demagogy.
