Thermal conductivity measurements at ANL A. Davila, T. Burtseva, J. Greene, J. Nolen and A.C.C. Villari

Need of reliable themo-conductivity Also need to be compact High density is desirable

1. An initial run produced a 25 g ingot, which was crushed under a nitrogen atmosphere using a tool steel mortar & pestle to yield 20 g of powder with a grain size of 44 1m (-325 mesh).

2. The sample disks for the thermal conductivity measurement were prepared in a laboratory hood by first weighing 0.32 g of UC2 powder. As an aid in holding the pellet together, 40 mg of carbon is added (ratio UC2:C of 8:1) in the form of either high-purity synthetic graphite powder (-200 mesh) (Alfa Aesar, 30 Bond St., Ward Hill, MA 01835 USA) or activated carbon powder (Fisher Scientific). The material is then transferred to a 10 ml glass beaker where two drops of albumin (separated egg-white) are added as a binder and mixed thoroughly.

3. The densities obtained (5-6 g/cc) are 50% that of pellets produced as reactor fuel elements.

q/A = -k ÆT/Æx Pcold = [

(Tcold4 1 To4)] = k ÆT/Æx
