Gigaprobes™ Single Ended TDR Configuration The Gigaprobes™ can be configured to operate as a single ended or differential TDR probe. To make it a singe ended probe, one of the probe tips is attached to the probe shield and a SMA shorting cap is been attached to the shorted probe tip path. The short cap and grounded tip can be removed to make it a differential probe. The single ended probe configuration bandwidth performance is 30 GHz or better. To get the best performance with your TDR Gigaprobes use sampling head extender cables and very short phase matched cables to minimize TDR rise time degradation. To get the best TDR measurements, clean the probe tip and the intended probing location with a circuit board cleaning agent to remove any contaminate or oxidation.

The picture on the left and the circuit diagrams shows the GigaProbes™ operating in a single ended configuration. The Gigaprobes are calibrated using a 4022 TDRT 9ps pulser to drive the probe and the reflective output is displayed on the right with a better than 30 GHz bandwidth.

Converting The GigaProbes™ from a Differential to a Single ended 30GHz TDR Probe To convert your Gigaprobes to a 50ohm TDR probe you must ground one of the probe tips to the copper shield. This procedure will provide a very short ground path in order to maintain the 30 GHz bandwidth and minimum TDR launch discontinuity. If you requested your GigaProbes be converted to a single ended 50 ohm TDR probe you can skip this procedure. To convert the GigaProbes to a 50 ohm probe you must wire wrap one of the probe tips to the copper shield and put a ground cap on the connector end. To secure the connection on the probe uses a piece of shrink tubing. the GigaProbes™ come with a kit that contains wire wrap and shrink tubing. If you do not want to do this procedure send your probe back to DVT Solutions (650) 5937083 for a one time free conversion.

Wrap one or two turns of 30 gauge wire around one probe leaving enough to wrap around the probe body a few times.

Put a short piece of shrink wrap around probe body to hold wire in place.
