Sony HDCAM SR digital cassettes are designed to maximize recordings in HDCAM SR professional digital videotape recorders. Use of metal particles 50% smaller than in HDCAM and other manufacturing innovations allow these cassettes to capture recording wavelength to 0.29 µm and represent the highest performance metal particle tape in the whole broadcast family.

Sony continues to develop its highly successful High Definition range of products, significantly broadening its capabilities and accessibility through a range of exciting product launches. To further expand the accessibility of HDCAM, while also providing high-end tools for the most demanding applications in cinematography today, Sony developed an unrivalled family of products for almost every HD application. Newly introduced HDCAM SR is a low compression, MPEG-4 based recording format that supports 12 channels of 24-bit audio, extremely high data transfer rate of approximately 600Mbps and is backwardly compatible with HDCAM. It has been specifically developed for very high-end applications such as special effects, archiving and film mastering.
As a result, the HDCAM SR system achieves a new benchmark in performance without sacrificing the size, operating convenience, practical media costs and the reasonable recording time that today's productions require

All HDCAM-SR Tapes are equipped with highly reliable and useful TeleFile system memory label. This low cost cassette label contains a memory IC, with contact-less, induction coil transmission, to store the information. Your HD family VTR can read and write from these labels.
Durability to withstand repeated playbacks and edits Sony’s newly developed HR(High Rigidity) binder system confers the exceptional durability demanded in broadcast professional tapes. Ultrafine high-performance metal particles and new calendaring technology realize high output and high C/N. To assure dependable recording at the shortest wavelength of 0.29 µm, Sony developed an ultrafine high-performance metal particles with the highest coercivity in the industry, half of the size of the HDCAM tape particles and with about two times greater energy, and then packed it at high density on the tape. The non-magnetic lower double-layer structure permits a thinner magnetic layer, realising +6dB high output compared to HDCAM.

Surface smoothness Magnetic layer of HDCAM-SR tape is consist of fine and high-energy magnetic particles to make sure that every bit of the valuable information is kept. Tape smoothness plays crucial role in the recording process, so Sony developed new dispersion agent to bind tightly the magnetic particles. Separately, new “Mirror Like” tape surface treatment was invented to make sure the impeccable tape surface!
