JULIE MAROH Born in the North of France in the early 1980’s, Julie Maroh studied art in Bruxelles. monsieur Vermeulen, le notaire, qu’elle « avait épousé pour ses sous » mais qu’elle méprisait et traitait comme un chien. Elle avait voulu garder son nom… Et puis un jour, en voulant doubler une grosse charrette pleine de foin avec son petit tilbury dans un sentier tortueux, elle s’était fichue de plein fouet dans le talus. Le cheval avait pris le mors aux dents, lui brisant les jambes et le bassin. Elle n’avait plus jamais marché. Ce fut dès lors l’enfer : d’acariâtre, elle devint infernale. Comme possédée de colère et de haine. Il fallait la pousser dans son fauteuil roulant partout à la fois, pour surveiller la lingerie, le jardinage et la cuisine. On craignait l’affreux grincement métallique de ses roues, le martèlement de sa canne, les glapissements de ses remontrances. Et ce fut pire encore quand, dégringolant les escaliers en voulant – on ne sait pour quelle raison – atteindre seule le palier, elle finit paralysée, à ne plus pouvoir quitter le lit. « Elle était pareille à une araignée, un démon à l’affût, recroquevillée dans sa chambre verte. » C’est de cette tanière qu’elle prenait un malin plaisir à semer la folie à travers « sa » maison. Sans cesse elle sonnait et resonnait pour qu’on lui monte un verre d’eau sucrée, sa potion, qu’on lui déplace un oreiller, qu’on lui ouvre la fenêtre, qu’on la referme, qu’on la change, qu’on lui fasse la lecture. Toutes les raisons lui étaient prétextes pour sonner, frapper le plancher, battre les murs… Geindre, crier, hurler et menacer si on traînait à lui obéir, et tout autant de jour qu’au beau milieu de la nuit.

Enfin, après les rieuses retrouvailles, après avoir puisé à pleines poignées dans les paniers de souvenirs, énuméré les connaissances disparues, évoqué farces et jolis temps des bals, bien repus de nostalgie, on passa à ce qui nous amenait tandis que le soir tombant obscurcissait les fenêtres. Monsieur van de J. ranima le poêle… et son bel accent chantant baissa d’un ton. - La famille de Wafelaerts était une très vieille famille des Flandres, des Flandres anversoises. Ceux qui avaient échappé aux Espagnols descendirent se réfugier jusqu’ici et bâtirent le château vers le XVIIe siècle. Fortune et biens provenaient très probablement de la mer et du commerce, mais c’était une famille à méchantes histoires. Il y avait de la folie dans le sang. Les hommes mouraient jeunes, les femmes accouchaient d’enfants morts-nés. Afin que la race survive et maintienne le patrimoine, les de Wafelaerts, malgré une certaine répugnance, n’eurent d’autre recours que de s’accoupler à la roture. Mais les alliances se révélèrent toutes plus catastrophiques les unes que les autres. Bref, passons sur toute cette suite de drames et venons-en à celle qui nous intéresse, Éloise de Wafelaerts. La dernière des Wafelaerts. Celle-là, Jeanne et moi l’avons connue. Quand nous étions des enfants, on la voyait traverser fièrement le village sur son tilbury tiré par un fringant cheval noir. Hautaine, elle ne faisait que passer, sans s’abaisser à nous jeter un regard. Ceux qui travaillaient au château la disaient avare, méchante, épiant, houspillant sans cesse son personnel avec toujours un reproche blessant à la bouche. Tout le monde la détestait et plaignait son mari,
