Matthew Overton From the Director of Research / Du Directeur de recherche Bonjour tout de monde! We are extremely pleased to announce the creation of Community Content, a new section of our website. Here, the CDA Institute hosts publications and content from various organizations in the Canadian defence and security sphere. Its purpose is to ensure that these materials - produced by the CAF, universities and other organizations - are exposed to as broad an audience as possible in order to support a connected and well-informed security and defence discussion, from policy through to implementation. In essence, we are endeavouring to make available to all relevant material that will assist with their work. At the moment, only material from the Canadian Army and Special Operations Forces is available. With that being said, this section will be updated regularly as we receive content that reflects the breadth of the credible, balanced and well-founded security and defence discussion in Canada! We trust that Community Content will be a valuable addition to your reading and research programs. Last week, Sydney Frost's memoir A Blue Puttee at War was made available for review. In the time since, communication was received from John Boileau stating that he had earlier reviewed this book for the Halifax Chronicle Herald. CDA Institute Research Fellow Joe Varner was quoted in a Toronto Sun article on the problematic meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Joshua Boyle (4 Jan). CDA Institute Research Fellow Dr. Elliot Tepper discusses world affairs and their impact on Canada with Mark Sutcliffe on Ottawa Today with Mark Sutcliffe (24 Jan, 1310 News).

This online book is written by Lester W. Grau and Charles K. Bartles. "Russia's 2014 annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, activity in Eastern Ukraine, saber rattling regarding the Baltics, deployment to Syria, and more assertive behavior along its borders have piqued interest in the Russian Armed Forces. This increased interest has caused much speculation about their structure, capabilities, and future development. Interestingly, this speculation has created many different, and often contradictory, narratives about these issues. At any given time, assessments of the Russian Armed Forces vary between the idea of an incompetent and corrupt conscript army manning decrepit Soviet equipment and relying solely on brute force, to the idea of an elite military filled with Special Operations Forces who were the "polite people" or "little green men" seen on the streets in Crimea. The Royal Canadian Air Force's venerable CH-124 Sea Kings of 423 Squadron conducted their final operational flights after approximately fifty years of service (23 Jan). In an op-ed for the Montreal Gazette, Colin Kenny argues that the National Shipbuilding Strategy should be amended to include Davie Shipbuilding (23 Jan).
