The European Youth Parliament – The Vision 250 young people from up to 30 European states, 10 days, 1 city – not an everyday combination. With this mixture the European Youth Parliament (EYP) offers a unique possibility for an exchange of views and culture between European youth. Because of this, EYP has been inviting youth to international sessions in various cities three times a year since 1988. Thousands of young people have met at these sessions up to now. Young people have come and returned with a more open view of global happenings. The European Youth Parliament offers young people the possibility of active political engagement. Young people, those who determine tomorrow’s political views and our understanding of a democratic state, obtain an insight into the European dimension of politics. The experience of intercultural cooperation is made possible– an experience that is and will be of great importance.
The International Session Session – Ten Days of Youth Politics At the European Youth Parliament sessions, 250 young people from up to 30 European countries take part, their ages ranging from 18 to 22 years. The course of the event always stays the same. The participants are divided into internationally mixed committees and attend the program in their group: Teambuilding, Committee Work, and General Assembly. Teambuilding The members of the committee all have different backgrounds; in most cases they have never seen each other before. Teambuilding is intended to create optimal conditions for the working in committees. Under the guidance of professional team trainers, the sessions participants face tasks and problems that can only be solved as a team. Inhibitions and shyness are overcome and replaced by the evolution of team spirit and a group dynamic. Committee Work The individual committees each discuss a subject selected from economics, environment, society or culture, under the sessions theme „Breaking with Tradition – new ways for a changing world“. Supported by a chairperson, a well-versed member of EYP, the members of the committee set up a resolution.

General Assembly During the last two days of the session, all the committees come together for the General Assembly. There, the resolutions are presented and discussed. Ultimately, each resolution will be voted upon. Approved resolutions are submitted to the European Parliament in Brussels. Session Paper On each day of the session, an in-house sessions newspaper is published. Like the chairpersons, the journalists and editors are also well-versed members of EYP. They report about the work in the committees, the session location, and everything else happening apart from teambuilding, committee work, and the general assembly.
Switzerland Switzerland and EYP Since 1995 young Swiss people have been among those who have regularly taken part at sessions of the European Youth Parliament. The delegations for the spring- and autumn- sessions are selected at the national conferences of the European Youth Parliament Switzerland. The Swiss delegation for the summer session is composed of participants from the previous four sessions. The national conferences are built up like an international session. EYP Switzerland wants to give those delegations who cannot take part at an international session a part of the spirit of EYP as well. Because of that, EYP Switzerland invites well-versed members of the EYP from all over Europe as chairpersons and journalists.
The 2nd International Session in Switzerland The 1st international session in Switzerland took place in Bern in the year 2000. In the summer of 2005 an International session in Switzerland will be held again. Continuing on from the success of Bern, Basel will be the host of the 2nd international session of the European Youth Parliament in Switzerland: The Swiss International Session Basel 2005 (SIS 05).. Open to the public and accompanied by cultural fringe events, Basel will become the focus of European youth politics from 22nd to 31st July 2005. As a portal of Switzerland to Europe, long known as a city with international flair and situated at the tri-nation corner at the Rhine, Basel is effectively symbolic of a session of the European Youth Parliament. As a Swiss fair- and conference- city, Basel offers ideal infrastructure, a requirement for the realization of the session.
