4. First-aid measures Inhalation

:

No adverse effects anticipated by this route of exposure.

Skin contact

:

Considered to be physiologically inert. In case of skin injuries due to melting material, immediately cool with plenty water. Do not remove the solidified resin but consult a doctor.

Eye contact

:

Solid or dust may cause irritation or corneal injury due to mechanical action. Irrigate immediately with water for at least 5 minutes.

Ingestion

:

Ingestion is unlikely due to physical state. Obtain medical attention if ingestion has occurred.

5. Fire - Fighting measures Suitable extinguishing media

:

Extinguishing media that must not be used: Special hazards from the substance itself, its combustion products or from its vapours:

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters:

Water spray jet, dry chemical powder, foam, CO2 Full water jet. The material, when involved in a fire can release dense black fumes made up of water, CO2 , carbon monoxide in lacking of oxygen. Dense black smoke results from the carbon particles (soot) produced. Overheating/pyrolysis evolve vapours made up of styrene monomer, low polymers and their oxidation products and some hydrobromic acid. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

6. Accidental release measures Personnel precautions

:

Avoid ignition sources and polystyrene dust. Do not smoke.

Environmental precautions

:

Prevent the split product and extinguish-water from entering the surface water drains. Collect mechanically, reuse if possible or deplete according to the current regulations. Transfer to a labelled container for subsequent safe disposal.

Methods for cleaning up/taking up :

7. Handling and storage Advice on safe handling

:

Wear gloves. Do not eat, drink or smoke at the workplace. Fine particles of polystyrene dust may be generated in cutting and grinding operations. Dust explosions and fires prevention rules have to be followed.

Advice on protection against Fire- and Explosion:

It is recommended that polystyrene foam during storage has to be protected against open fire, heat- and ignition sources. Take precautions against accumulation of electrostatic charge. Store in general well-ventilated dry area.

Requirements for storage rooms

:

Store at ambient temperature and dry places away from direct sunlight. Store in a general well-ventilated area.

Advice on storage compatibility

:

Avoid storage in combination with organic solvents.

8. Exposure controls / personal protection Personal Protective Equipment and Hygienics:

Not normally required. For hygiene measures: eating and smoking prohibitions during handling.

Respiratory Protection

:

Not normally required.

Skin Protection

:

Standard issue work clothes.

Eye/Face Protection

:

For fabricating operations safety spectacles are recommended.

9. Physical and chemical properties Appearance Physical state

:

solid, but rigid foamed material (boards).

Colour

:

white or coloured.

Odour

:

odourless.

Relevant Safety Data Change in physical state

softening temperature: greater then 100°C melting range

Density

:

30 - 100 kg/m3

Flash point

:

> 350°C.

Decomposition temperature

:

at approx. 250°C.

Auto ignition temp.:

with flame influence : without flame influence:

: greater then 150°C. (EN ISO 845).

(Testmethod : DSC).

at approx. 350°C. at approx. 450°C.

Explosive properties

:

not applicable.

Vapour pressure 20°C

:

not applicable.

:

not applicable.

n-octanol/water partition coefficient:

not applicable.

10. Stability and Reactivity Conditions to avoid

:

Stable under normal handling and storage conditions. Avoid excessive heat.

Materials to avoid

:

Most of the organic solvents, esters, amines, aldehydes, oils, petrol, collapsed the cell structure of the foamed polystyrene.

Hazardous decomposition products:

MSDS_UTSE

Under high heat and non-flaming conditions, small amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons, predominantly styrene and ethylbenzene are generated (inflammable gases). Also small amounts of hydrobromic acid.

11. Toxicological information Acute toxicity

:

Not injurious to health when used as recommended.

Skin / Eye irritation

:

Not expected to be irritating.

Skin sensitisation

:

Not expected to a skin sensitiser.

Mutagenicity

:

Not mutagenic.

Basis for assessment

:

Ecotoxicological data have not been determined specifically for this product. The information given below is based on a knowledge of the components and the ecotoxicology of similar products.

Mobility

:

The foam floats on the water surface and remains on surface of soil.

Persistence/degradability

:

Expected to be not inherently biodegradable. It doesn’t pose any harm for the landfill site nor can pollute the groundwater. Styrene homopolymers are susceptible to degradation by exposure to sunlight.

Bioaccumulation

:

Not expected to bio accumulate significantly, MW > 700.

Other information

:

Product is expected to be non-toxic. When burning under free air conditions mainly CO2 , CO, small amounts of hydrobromic acid, water vapour and dense black smoke resulting from the carbon particles (soot) are evolved.

Product disposal

:

Local legislation

:

Recover or recycle if possible. Otherwise thermodestruction with energy recovery is possible at suitable incineration facilities. The recommendations given are considered appropriate for safe disposal. However, local official regulations may be more stringent and these must be complied with.

12. Ecological information

13. Disposal considerations

14. Transport information ADR / RID

:

UN-number: --This product is not classified.

15. Regulatory information EC classification

:

Not classified as dangerous. The product does not require a hazard warning label in accordance with EC directives.

16. Other information Data and information contained in this Safety Data Sheet are based on our available knowledge at the last revision date. They are intended to describe our products with regard to safety requirements and thus do not guarantee specific properties.
