PHOTOGRAPHY DOISNEAU, CIRCUS AND FAIRGROUNDS Directed by Annette and Francine Doisneau 2 books in a slipbox 190 x 190 mm 144 pages 150 photos €39 Fall 2016

7/7 Guillaume Herbaut Hardbound 220 x 230 mm 128 pages 5 000 words €40 Fall 2016

The “patient passerby”, Robert Doisneau is famous for his street photographs in Paris. He also spent time in the circuses and fairgrounds, showing the travelling fair from both the stands and the wings, conveying the full wonder of the performing fleas or the mountains of muscle on display under the astonished eyes of children and adults alike. A wonderful work, with photos almost never published before.

All sorts of legends run about the mytical Paris nightlife in the 1980s until the 1990s, when Queen, David Bowie, Boy George, The Cure, Madonna, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Béatrice Dalle, Orson Welles or Keith Haring used to meet and party at the Palace or the Bains-Douches. Jean-Claude Lagrèze, a secretive and hardly ever published photographer, lived at night and approached all the stars and other spectacular actors of these unique nights in which fashion and trends were invented.

After Silencio exploring deserted places of city life, Thomas Jorion devoted the new part of his work to the skeleton of what used to be one of the XIXth and XXth century European “empires”. A haunting journey into the architectural remains of French colonialism (Cambodia, Senegal, China…), driving us into a universal reflection on the ephemeral aspects of our societies and political organizations. Thomas Jorion invites us to a journey in vast no man’s urban lands, devoid of any human presence but still permeated with the life of their gone inhabitants. Through 150 photographs from all over the globe, he captures all the strangeness and poetry of these places and takes us on a silent pilgrimage on the steps of the relics of our history.

Young French photographer Guillaume Herbaut’s work focuses on the effects of History on people, whether it is war, industrial catastrophes or century-old oppressive social systems. Revenge laws in Albania, women’s mass murders in Ciudad Juarez, how to live today in Auschwitz, Nagasaki, or Tchernobyl, Herbaut’s art of framing captures the life made impossible by the weight of history on the shoulders of the living. A powerful and unforgettable testimony that questions our links to the past and the notion of collective responsibility.

BRUNO BARBEY, PASSAGES A RETROSPECTIVE Clothed hardbound 590 x 320 mm 384 pages 8 400 words €79 Fall 2015

A wonderful and poetical collection of XIXth century photos, picturing a past and gone Northern Africa (Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon). Selected from the famous French Roger-Viollet agency, these portraits unveil a world remained close to its antique roots—ancient costumes, street scenes, landscapes. A visual and spiritual journey in the East enlightened by the dialogue between a Jewish and a Muslim historian (to be confirmed). For now 50 years, the mythical couple of photographers Roland and Sabrina Michaud have devoted their life to the study of Asian and Islamic cultures in a fervent quest for beauty, wisdom and absoluteness. This book presents a complete retrospective of their work. A true inspiration and models for a whole generation of photographers, Roland and Sabrina live in Paris, without computer nor cell phone.

Following his years-long work and fascination for the Omo valley peoples in Ethiopia, award-winning Hans Silvester has gathered a complete report on a disappearing custom, that of the children keeping cattle. With a rare sense of poetry, Hans Silvester shows the exceptional connection existing between the Suri children, their cattle and their natural environment. Probably Silvester’s last book on the Omo valley, Pastorale Africaine constitutes a major celebration of the beauty of nature, childhood and Africa.

By the major photographer Hans Silvester, a book on tribal decorations from the Omo valley in Ethiopia, a priceless record of a unique and increasingly fragile way of life, threatened by conflicts, climate change and tourism.

Multiple award-winning Magnum photographer Bruno Barbey has documented the world with a profound and sensitive eye for over 50 years of travels. This sumptuous monograph displays his most important works as a photojournalist, and acute witness of the tormented history of our world.

CHINA NOW Under the direction of Yann Layma Hardbound 360x250 mm 192 pages 40 000 words €49 Fall 2014

Kosuke Okahara is a young but already largely awarded Japanese photographer living in France. On the aftermath of Fukushima’s disaster, he has returned to his native land to testify. Destroyed houses, deserted streets, desolation, silence. And yet slowly, little by little, life is taking over. A contemplative yet striking journey into another world.

Darcy Padilla is an American photojournalist and documentary photographer. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography and a previous World Press Photo award in 2011 among others. Family Love is one of these intense books that keep you silent for a long time after closing it, and a unique companionship between a photographer following his model in her fight against her fate of “off the grid” woman in San Francisco streets.

Who has never spent time looking out through the window, peeping at what is happening in the room in front, making up scenarios and imaginary lives? Through 60 photographs, Gail Albert Halaban offers an exclusive look into Paris, its architecture and inhabitants. Her lenses tell us of the life in the French capital, as well as of our human condition.

Liu Bolin is a chameleon. From body art to photography and sculpture, from the Popular Republic of China to the West, he uses a wide range of art forms and manages to hide himself inside the backgrounds surrounding him. This book is the first complete monograph to this day of this major Chinese artist.

This book strives to present the stunning metamorphosis China has been experiencing over the last 30 years. Through 140 powerful images pulled from the work of 16 of the best Chinese contemporary photographers, as well as from his own photographs, Yann Layma accurately captures the essence of China, often little known in the West.
