CHAPTER 4: PREPARATION LE HAVRE 2010: After buying MAEVA, I checked the medicine box and had to throw everything in the bin as the expiry dates had been reached. CHANNEL WEEK 2013: under pilot. During a gybe the pilot stopped. A lonely moment on the foredeck with the spinnaker pole in my hand. Back at Brighton Marina I discovered a rotten wire. NORMANDIE SOLO 2012: safety control. My flash light does not work in front of the safety inspector. No more battery power left in it. Lack of control I could go on and on but I am convinced that luck does not exist. A race is won at 1/3 at the preparation level - As a minimum!

I try to do the “now” jobs during the delivery trips. But often during the deliveries, more items are added than are taken off. So the jobs are finished at St Brieuc (my home port).

This curative maintenance was 4 months this year as it entailed osmosis treatment. Fortunately a very good friend and a motivated worker, Arnault ANDAL, helped me for 2 months. He is very good at painting and lamination, jobs at which I am no better than a monkey. My skills are more in rigging (splicing by example) and electronics.

It took me around a week to do the 60 points to check (engine drain included) On the last column (hidden) you have all the references of the spare parts (anode, filter, oil, impellor for the pump….) needed: I save time by doing in one go all my “shopping” online. c) a “Date control” (safety and drug boxes) This is very important. Obviously it is very bad to discover in the water that your life jacket gas bottle is empty!!!!

The drug box is organised by symptoms. I am more a jolly sailor than a real doctor. If a crew is sea sick I know he has to take an Avomine. I know how to use a topping lift or a Cunningham is Fucidine or Prednisolone. This is why the list is printed and taped inside the drug box. But DO NOT USE GLUCAGEN ON ME; till I am lying unconscious as I hate to have a hole in my water proof jacket. This list has to be adapted to your own need or legislation.

CONCLUSION CHAPTER 4 Do you think it is for fun I spent 4 weeks (and also 2 weeks with Arnault) with sanding done by hand (40, 80, 120 and finished at 180 before anti-fouling), using a 1 m long 3mm ply sanding board? And when we were tired or bored (10% of the time as a minimum) one of us took a break….

Pictures before primer and before anti fouling I also glue 3 ovals of Mylar to cover the exit of the water sink outlet and cockpit scupper exits to minimize drag.

Proper preparation of hull and appendices gives between 1 and 3 % increase in speed. At 5 knots it gives you an advantage of around 0.1 knots equivalent of 1 and ½ minute per hour. After 8 hours of race (RIOW 2013) it is 9 minutes: there are 7 seconds between the 2nd and the 3rd in class 1, and 9 minutes between the 1st and the 5th in classes 2, so the benefits are real. Tackling these jobs during winter is very healthy: after 8 hours per day 6 days a week I sleep like a baby I do not need any physical preparation: my shoulders are painful and my arm… dead. I can refuse to go to the swimming pool (I hate water!) with my wife (I love her) with good reasons Trust me, this preparation is a partly the reason for my speed and ability focus on real things (strategy for example - see chapter 5). And under the tent there is MAEVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ready to get her new antifouling!!!!!!! In 2 weeks at sea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best moment is when you clean and arrange all your tools! The jobs are nearly over and you can prepare your 2014 season. (Chapter 5)
