RÉCAPITULATION DES EXPORTATIONS DE GRAINS CANADIENS DE LA CAMPAGNE AGRICOLE 199798
Exports of the principal grains and oilseeds totaled 26 531 thousand tonnes for the 1997-98 crop year, a decrease of 2% from the previous year (27 088 thousand tonnes). Durum wheat exports of 4 205 thousand tonnes exceeded the 19961997 crop year record of 4 067 thousand tonnes. Exports of wheat, flaxseed and canola also increased, while exports of all other crops decreased.
Au cours de la campagne agricole 1997-1998, les exportations des principaux grains et oléagineux canadiens ont totalisé 26 531 000 tonnes, ce qui représente une baisse de 2 % par rapport au volume de 27 088 000 tonnes enregistré lan dernier. WHEAT
BLÉ
Wheat exports were 15 602 thousand tonnes, only 3% over the previous year 15 109 thousand. Iran remained Canadas largest wheat importer with 2 139 thousand tonnes, an amount similar to last years total of 2 028 thousand tonnes. The Peoples Republic of China was the second largest market with imports of 1 328 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States 1 295 thousand, Japan 1 259 thousand, and Indonesia 1047 thousand tonnes.

A record volume of 4 205 thousand tonnes of durum wheat was exported for 199798, surpassing last years record of 4 067 thousand tonnes. Algeria remained the largest customer, increasing their imports to 1 948 thousand tonnes compared to 1 223 thousand tonnes the previous year. Other destinations of durum wheat included the United States 428 thousand, Italy 374 thousand and Morocco 302 thousand tonnes.

AVOINE
Exports of oats decreased to 870 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 29% from the previous year 1 220 thousand tonnes. The United States was the largest importer with 830 thousand tonnes, representing 95% of the total exports of oats.

BARLEY Barley exports declined significantly to 2 126 thousand tonnes, well below last years volume of 3 441 thousand tonnes. Canadas major customers included (199697 in brackets) the United States 685 (915), the Peoples Republic of China 562 (509), Saudi Arabia 387 (1 090), and Japan 254 (575) thousand tonnes. RYE Rye exports decreased to 85 thousand tonnes, compared to 113 thousand in 199697. Shipments were destined to three countries: the United States 56 thousand, Japan 17 thousand and Australia 11 thousand tonnes. FLAXSEED Flaxseed exports increased to 645 thousand tonnes. Belgium was the major destination with 375 thousand tonnes. The United States imported 111 thousand and Japan imported 73 thousand tonnes. CANOLA Canola exports totaled 2 804 thousand tonnes, compared to 2 359 thousand in 199697. Japan imported 65% of the total 1 829 thousand. Smaller volumes were purchased by Mexico 593 thousand, the United States 232 thousand and the Peoples Republic of China 110 thousand tonnes. CORN Corn exports declined to 7 thousand tonnes with Morocco 5 thousand and the United States 2 thousand tonnes, being the countries of destination.

The United States remained the principal market for Canadian grains and oilseeds with imports of wheat 1 295, durum 428, oats 830, barley 685, rye 56, flaxseed 111, canola 232 and corn 2 thousand tonnes. Japan ranked second with total imports of 3 658 thousand tonnes. Algeria with imports of wheat and durum totaling 2 314 thousand tonnes was the third largest market. Iran with reduced imports of 2 245 thousand compared to 2 794 in 1996-97, ranked fourth. The Peoples Republic of China with imports of 2 008 thousand tonnes was the fifth largest customer.

Exports through Pacific Coast elevators totaled 15 420 thousand tonnes, representing 59% of the total Canadian grain exported. Exports of 11 232 via the Port of Vancouver were similar to last year (11 394 thousand) tonnes. The Port of Prince Rupert loaded 4 187 thousand tonnes, up from the previous years movement of 4 047 thousand tonnes.

The Port of Churchill exported 370 thousand tonnes, compared to 336 thousand tonnes in the previous year. Wheat was the only grain to move through this port. Direct exports via the terminal elevators in Thunder Bay totaled 2 059 thousand tonnes, up only slightly from the previous year (1 956 thousand). Movement through Eastern transfer elevators totaled 5 440 thousand tonnes compared to 5 872 thousand tonnes last year. Exports direct from Prairie elevator points to export markets totaled 3 054 thousand tonnes, a slight decrease from the previous years movement (3 291 thousand tonnes).

Exports of soybeans increased 36% to 649 thousand tonnes. Norway remained the largest customer, increasing their imports to 159 thousand tonnes, but the United States was a close second, more than doubling their imports to 125 thousand tonnes. Other soybean markets included Portugal 58 thousand, Japan 53 thousand and Argentina 51 thousand tonnes. Exports of lentils totaled 339 thousand tonnes compared to 282 thousand tonnes last year. Some of the major destinations for lentils were Colombia 46 thousand), Algeria 31 thousand and Spain 28 thousand tonnes. Mustard seed exports increased slightly to 166 thousand tonnes, most of which went to the United States 61 thousand, Belgium 30 thousand and Bangladesh 28 thousand tonnes. Canary seed exports also increased slightly from 119 to 132 thousand tonnes, with the largest volumes going to Belgium 32 thousand, Mexico 24 thousand, the United States 18 thousand and Brazil 16 thousand tonnes. Exports of peas dropped 13% to 748 thousand tonnes. The major importers were Spain 289 thousand, Cuba 81 thousand and India 59 thousand tonnes. Buckwheat exports declined to 9 thousand tonnes, with Japan continuing to be the major customer with purchases of 6 thousand tonnes.

Exports of canola oil decreased from 641 to 588 thousand tonnes. Most was shipped to the United States 419 thousand tonnes. The United States was also the main customer for canola meal exports which, in total, increased 31% to 1 417 thousand tonnes.
