DIRECTORS NOTES… Since ANIMAL FARM was first published in 1945 it has been translated into several languages and has been read and enjoyed, studied and analyzed throughout the world. George Orwell originally titled his book, ANIMAL FARM, A FAIRY STORY, and he said that although it was primarily a satire on the Russian Revolution, it was intended to have a wider application. This simple story of animals and the events leading up to and following their rebellion can be seen on many levels: our barnyard is a society or community, the time is both the past and the present, the inhabitants are individuals whose hopes and dreams of building a better world are eventually destroyed by the corruption of power. It is a story that is as old as history, a story without end. Here the animal nature is a mirror of the human condition. Barry L. Goldman London, September 2006 Barry Goldman - Director Barry Goldman was born in the USA where he received extensive training in theatre and dance. In Europe he attended L'Ecole Jacques Lecoq (Paris) and later The Feldenkrais Training in Munich. Barry Goldman was an Associate Professor of Theatre at the University of Michigan (USA) and continues to teach theatre and movement workshops in France, Germany and in England. 1982-1985 he was an Associate Artistic Director of the Children's Theatre Company, and for ten years Artistic Director of Théâtre Marcadet Paris directing (among others) Molière, Ionesco, and Beckett for French language Tours throughout Europe. Barry has directed many productions in English for the American Drama Group Europe which have toured in Europe, Asia and Scandinavia. Since 1996 Barry Goldman has been directing in German. His work has been seen in various theaters throughout the country, including Braunschweig, Oberhausen, Halle, Neuss and Münster. Recently he also directed a German touring production of J.B.Priestley's Ein Inspektor Kommt. He has also created performance projects with the Salzburger Festspiele in Austria. Barry is delighted to be directing this production of Animal Farm and to be affiliated with Tour de Force Theatre.

George Orwell, whose given name was Eric Arthur Blair, was born on June 25th, 1903 in N.W. Bengal. He moved to England as a child and attended Eton from 1917–1921. After finishing school he returned to Burma and joined the Indian Imperial Police. It was here that he wrote his first novel BURMESE DAYS which was the beginning of his criticism of totalitarianism and support for democratic socialism. In 1927 he left for London and Paris and it was during this time that he changed his name. He lived in extreme poverty and worked as a dishwasher, tutor and teacher, living a "tramp-like existence mixing with the squalid and the sordid in doss-houses and workhouses". Orwell published A CLERGYMAN'S DAUGHTER (1935) and KEEP THE ASPIDISTRA FLYING (1936) which were critical successes but did not sell well. He was married in 1936 and a year later published THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War Orwell set off to Barcelona and joined the militia. It was then that his eyes and consciousness were opened to the treachery of Communism. His future political beliefs were conceived and organised during this time and in particular "his opinion of the essential decency of man, if only it were allowed to triumph over political and social intrigue and cant". In 1937 he returned to England but suffered from ill-health which followed him for the remainder of his life. He published COMING UP FOR AIR in 1939 followed by a long essay on Charles Dickens. Because of his bad health he was denied service in the military in World War II but in 1941 joined the Indian service of the B.B.C.. His wife died during the last year of the war and the grieving Orwell went abroad as a correspondent for THE OBSERVER. Between November 1943 and February 1944 Orwell wrote his satire on the Russian Revolution, ANIMAL FARM, which was published in 1945. The book was a huge success and finally brought Orwell some financial security. He published many essays and works after this, the last being his grim, terrifying novel, 1984. He remarried in 1949 and made plans for a new book but on January 23rd, 1950, died suddenly. Orwell published 13 books and wrote hundreds of essays. Although not considered a great novelist he wrote cleanly, simply and succinctly like Hemingway and was a genius as a prose stylist. As a man who thrived on contradiction and whose work and beliefs were full of paradoxes it is difficult to "apply a basic philosophy of belief to his collective works". He believed in socialism but felt it inappropriate for a writer to formally become affiliated with a political party. He was an ardent patriot but criticised the English for their "class consciousness, their inablity to think logically and their lack of artistic ability". "His fierce honesty and passionate pursuit of truth angered many but made countless friendships among all sorts and conditions of men; and even enemies began to respect him."

Michael Castleton Michael graduated from Dartington College of Arts with a Theatre Degree in 1995. After which he took up proper jobs in Banking and Photography until 1999, when the lure of taking to the stage in tights and make up became too great. Michael’s early work included directing a production of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. He also performed in a national tour of ‘Macbeth’ on a bouncy castle, and is proud to have been a silver hotpant clad dancer in the video for the unsuccessful Russian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. Recently Michael has played Lysander in ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ at Hampton Court Palace, and ‘Macbeth’ for stage and film. He also received a big cheque for a very small part in the film ‘Closer’. The part was cut, but he got to drink tea with Jude Law, and experience in the flesh the fact that Julia Roberts is much taller than he is. 16
