FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Anglo-French Physical Acoustics Conference 2004 (AFPAC’04) Organised by the Physical Acoustics Group of the Institute of Physics and GAPSUS of Société Française d’Acoustique Co-sponsored by IOA and BINDT 14 - 16 January 2004 Wye College, Wye, Kent, UK

Introduction The purpose of this meeting is to review progress, discuss on-going work and to enhance collaboration in all areas of physical acoustics, such as: Transducers · Process Control · Environmental · AE · Vibration/Noise · Audio · Ultrasonic Joining · Imaging · Lasers / Photo-Acoustics · NDE · Systems · Signal Processing · Monitoring · Modelling · Sonar / Underwater · High Power · Medical · Cleaning · Sonochemistry · SAW Devices The three-day meeting hopes to attract presentations from both a number of internationally recognised experts and researchers as well as encouraging submissions from students. Each Group will have one invited speaker at each session. Wye College is the agriculture faculty of Imperial College. It is ideally situated close to Ashford International Railway station making travelling easier for the French participants. Accommodation will be available at the conference venue. The village of Wye is also ideally located for visiting Kent’s historic attractions such as Canterbury Cathedral in the town of Canterbury, Chartwell House (home of Sir Wilson Churchill) or the beautiful Leeds Castle (just a short train journey from Wye). List of invited speakers is as follows: Metrology of Ultrasonic Fields Jacques Attal (Université Montpellier 2, France) Fabry Perot polymer film sensors for broadband ultrasound field characterisation and imaging applications Paul Beard (University College London) The challenges of applying finite element modelling to ultrasonic and underwater acoustics applications Trevor Esward (NPL) Aspects of non-linear acoustics applied to medical ultrasound Victor Humphrey (Bath University) Resonant Acoustical Scattering Gérard Maze (UMR CNRS, France) Acoustic Microscopy Daniel Royer (ESPCI, France)

to attend and present. The five best extended abstracts submitted before the closing date will be chosen by the Committee to receive free registration and accommodation.

The Group offers a sponsorship for five students members of the Institute

The abstract submission deadline is Monday 10 November 2003

Call for Papers In addition to the invited speakers and the sponsored student attendees the Group calls for the submission of presentation proposals via abstracts of not more than 1 side of A4 (max 3 references and no figures). These can be submitted electronically by using the following method: WWW: full online abstract submission of your personal details and abstract text is available via the conference web site at: http:// physics.iop.org/IOP/Confs/PAC3/ This method is the preferred option and offers the highest degree of flexibility and security.
