About Insula INSULA, The International Scientific Council for Island Development is an International non-profit non-governmental Organisation. INSULA’s aims to contribute to the economic, social and cultural progress of islands throughout the world, as well as to the protection of their environment and to the sustainable development. Within such a context, INSULA cooperates with the EU Commission, with UNESCO and with other International Organisations, as well as with island authorities at the national or regional level sharing the same goals and interests.INSULA operates as a decentralized network of research bodies, institutions and experts covering a wide range of disciplines and competences. INSULA has a considerable experience of European projects management and coordination concerning mainly Information Society and Renewable Energies in islands.INSULA publishes the magazine “INSULA International Journal of Island Affairs” and manages the web site: www.insula.org. For the attainment of these aims, INSULA promotes international co-operation projects, assists islands directly, organises conferences and fora with the aim to facilitate the achievement of agreements and sets up the necessary means for the exchange of experiences and information among islands. Insulas’ task is to favour the passage from theory to practise, supporting the actions, which contribute to a sustainable and fair development of every island in the world.INSULA works as a decentralized network of research bodies, institutions and experts covering a wide range of disciplines and competences. All of them have at heart the sustainable development of islands and small island states.Through its initiatives, Insula seeks to facilitate on favour:Technical co-operation in al fields relating to sustainable island development with a special interest in island cultures and human resources development. The exchange of information and experience through the publication and diffusion of periodical journals, books and reports, using the international and multidisciplinary network represented by Insula members. Inter-island agreements directed towards the defence of islands’ common interests in the framework of sustainable development, at level of governments and public administrations as well as technical and scientific institutions.Some projects and initiatives of Insula Nature and Workmanship. The aim of this project is to recuperate man-made coastal cultural landscape of the Mediterranean. Starting from this project a transnational action has been started with the name of “The salt Route”. Its aim is to revalue and preserve traditional salt-pans and aquaculture exploitations in coastal areas. Islands and Biosphere Reserves. In February 1997 representatives of insular Biosphere Reserves, with the support of the UNESCO-MaB Programme, met on the island of La Palma to constitute a world network with the objective of finding co-operation formulas on the subject of sustainable development in these insular areas.Island Solar Programme. In the framework of the World Solar Programme (1996-2005) and with the participation of Insula, the Island Solar Council is being consolidated. Renewable energies are among the major assets of the island future, so drawing up a solar programme specific for islands is one of the next years’ greater objectives. ConferencesISLAND 2000. The World of Islands Conference (Giardini-Naxos, Sicily, 1992). The first World Island Conference, organised by UNESCO and INSULA, where some 250 people from 45 countries met to discuss present and future issues concerning islands. The main theme of the Conference was scientific progress and new technologies for island sustainable development. World Conference on Sustainable Tourism (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, 1995). The Conference attracted more than 1.000 participants from 75 countries, including many government representatives and representatives of all major international organisations. By proposing the adoption of the Charter for Sustainable Tourism, INSULA and the coorganisers (UNESCO, UNEP and WTO) kept in mind the outcomes of the UN Global Conference on Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, organised one year before in Barbados. European Conference on Sustainable Island Development (Minorca, 1997). The Minorca Commitments and the European Agenda are the major achievements of the Conference, having great repercussions on the process of recognition of the specificity of islands within the European Union. Salamanca Conference. “Energy, Transport and Telematics in the Historic Cities” (Thermie, DGXVII, Salamanca 1998). Formulated demands and analysed the ideal technological solutions for a rational use of energy resources and new transport options and the role of telematics in these special spaces.Island Solar Summit. (Tenerife, Canary Islands, May 1999). Main objectives were to promote inter-island and international co-operation in favour of developing renewable energies on islands, and to indicate legal frameworks and regulatory solutions that will facilitate their integration.Other activities INSULA maintains official operational relations with UNESCO and contributes as such to several programs of this Organization especially in the areas of renewable energies, disaster relief and management, telematics, network and cultural resources management.INSULA publishes INSULA INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ISLANDS AFFAIRS and manages the web site www.insula.orgProjects with EUMEDIS Models for European Digital Islands IST-1999-20896.
