À l’origine, on ne parlait pas de « cerf », mais de « serpent volant ». Sûrement parce qu’en Europe, les premières images documentant ces engins montrent des dragons. Dans de très anciens man-

lUcanUs servUs, l'aUtre « cerfvolant » Un insecte porte aussi ce nom insolite. C’est le lucanus servus ou lucane, l’un des plus gros coléoptères d’Europe (jusqu’à 9 cm de long!).
