Gare au dragon !

À l’origine, on ne parlait pas de « cerf », mais de « serpent volant ». Sûrement parce qu’en Europe, les premières images documentant ces engins montrent des dragons. Dans de très anciens man-

Et en France, que s’est-il passé ? À la suite d’une erreur de copie, deux lettres ont été changées et ont modifié le sens initial. Le serp (« serpent » en ancien français) s’est transformé en cerf – il faut dire que les deux mots se prononçaient pareil. Et c’est ainsi que le « serpent volant » est devenu un cervidé de haute voltige.

lUcanUs servUs, l'aUtre « cerfvolant » Un insecte porte aussi ce nom insolite. C’est le lucanus servus ou lucane, l’un des plus gros coléoptères d’Europe (jusqu’à 9 cm de long!). Il est très facile à reconnaître. Le mâle est doté d’imposantes mandibules qui rappellent les bois d’un cerf – d’où son nom de « cerf-volant ».
