Imagine Cup 2011 Worldwide Finalists General Themes Women Innovators on the Rise: Female participation at the Worldwide Finals more than doubled this year, from 30 female students in Poland in 2010 to 65 in New York; additionally, there are four all-women teams competing at the event this year. Playing for the Environment: 24 percent of Worldwide Finalist projects* and 60 percent of Game Design projects address global environmental concerns. Seeing a Better Future: 22 percent of projects* (25 total) address accessibility; of these, almost half (12 total) specifically focus on solutions for visually impaired individuals. Helping address disasters: With the events of this past year as their muse, 23 percent of projects* (26 total) address the various aspects of disaster relief.

Technologies Used It’s Not Just the Phone That’s Smart: Windows Phone 7 is the most commonly used technology, with 48 percent of projects* (54 total) including a smartphone application — with uses ranging from finding the nearest recycling center to helping disaster victims broadcast their location. Head in the Clouds: 32 percent (36 total) of projects* use Windows Azure. Students Take the Lead on New Technologies: 10 projects feature Kinect technology. Projects Don’t Have to Ask for Directions: 30 percent of projects* (34 total) incorporate Bing Maps. Through this online system, patients have the ability to look for a doctor, set an appointment and read about their medical condition in Arabic; doctors can develop electronic medical records for their patients and move away from paper records. Vigilis software is a tool for parents to keep a watchful eye on their children in a world where socializing is done with the press of a button; it provides children with the ability to immediately document any cyberbullying or sexual harassment they experience online or via mobile.
