Responsibilities

TRS-14-18 CUPE 1540 Full Time Reporting to the Manager of Transportation Planning & Parking, you will be responsible for a number of challenging assignments including review of development applications, development of sustainable transportation policy, review of policy initiatives of senior levels of government, active and sustainable transportation initiatives and transportation demand management. The successful candidate will: • Provide transportation planning advice and respond to inquiries from the public, development industry, variously levels of government, staff, applicants and elected officials with respect to transportation planning matters and other transportation issues. • Review, comment and prepare recommendations on development applications and transportation studies to understand the impact of new development on the transportation network and identify necessary improvements. Recommendations will take into consideration conformity with the Official Plan, Strategic Plan, Transportation Plan and other relevant legislation. • Participate on long-range planning initiatives including the Official Plan Review, Transportation Plan, Environmental Assessment studies and other projects related to transportation planning. • Participate on department, division and corporate teams in the review of issues and establishment of positions and strategies on matters of corporate interest. Represent the department or City on external project teams and committees. • Develop land use and transportation policies as related to sustainable transportation initiatives. • Make presentations on transportation planning matters at neighbourhood meetings, open houses and meetings of standing committees of Council. • Coordinate, monitor and resolve conflicts on City transportation planning matters affecting city departments, regional and provincial agencies, private industries, local stakeholders and the public. • Appear before the Ontario Municipal Board and other tribunals to give expert evidence on the City’s behalf as it relates to transportation matters

Requirements

The successful applicant will have a minimum of four years of demonstrated experience in transportation planning, complemented by a degree in planning or diploma in transportation engineering. Preference will be given to those who hold a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation. The incumbent will have in-depth knowledge and understanding of transportation and urban planning principles and the inter-relationship between transportation and land use. Previous experience, preferably in the municipal environment, combined with knowledge and understanding of Transportation Demand Management initiatives, parking management and sustainable transportation is considered an asset. The incumbent will have strong knowledge of municipal planning processes, site plan approval relevant to land development, best practices, industry standards and familiarity with planning legislation. The incumbent requires excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deal with a variety of internal and external clients. The individual must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, working concurrently on multiple assignments of complexity, balancing workload and maintaining priorities.
