ITS answers to policy challenges Economic Growth and Innovation » Strong transport related industry in Europe

ITS Directive (2010/40/EU) *

Urbanisation » 2030: 60% of population in cities Safety » 95% of accidents linked to driver mistakes » 69% of road accidents occur in cities Demographic Change » 65+ generation will nearly double by 2030 Climate Change and Resource Scarcity » Road transport contributes about one-fifth of the EU's total CO2 emissions Behavioural Change » More usage of “soft” transport modes » Home delivery of consumer goods *ITS Directive, http://eurlex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32010L0040:EN: NOT

» Emphasis on the field of road transport and for interfaces with other modes of transport, » Priority on Freight and logistics core services : tracking and tracing, fleet management, intelligent truck parking and remote freight information.

• …but still slow and fragmented uptake across Europe and low degree of intermodality >> patchwork of national, regional and local solutions

ITS answers to freight and logistics challenges •13%- CO2 emissions (g/km) •14%- NOx emissions (g/km) •-13% - Fuel consumption (l/100km)

•3-10% increase of average speed •Positive feedback by Fleet operators (safe and freight transport image in city is improved)

Environment

Mobility

(fuel consumption, CO2 emissions )

(total/individual travel times, delays, number of stops)

Driver behaviour

Supply chain Operations

(safety, compliance, user acceptance)

(load factor, productivity, empty running, security)

•50% reduction of incident related delays •17% less stops •10% reduced total travel time •35-40% Reduction of waiting time for trucks in the terminal

•10-12% - Reduction of average loading/unloading time •15-40% - Increase of terminal productivity •30-35% - Increase of load factor •5-10% (Multi- Synchromodal transport) - Decrease of empty runnings 5

European ITS Harmonised architecture

Cooperative Logistics for Sustainable Mobility of Goods •

CO-GISTICS is the first European pilot project fully dedicated to the deployment of cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) applied to logistics. The objective is to increase energy efficiency by reducing fuel consumption and equivalent CO2 emission and lower pollution for sustainable mobility of goods through the convergence of M2M and C-ITS. Intelligent Parking and delivery

Priority and speed advice

Cargo Transport Optimisation

Eco-drive support

CO2 emission estimation

Multiple transport involved

5 CO-GISTICS services will be deployed in 7 logistic hubs and on at least 325 trucks and vans.
