Port Drayage Operation in Los Angeles / Long Beach Port Drayage refers to the movement of shipping containers between a marine terminal and an inland distribution point.

This makes drayage the chief manifestation of containerized shipping in port area communities, where it is a part of the congestion and emissions problems endemic to urban areas Short average distances, frequent stops and prolonged idling make it a good candidate for hybridization and plug-in technologies

LA handles 1/3 of US seaport traffic.

Container volume is expected to triple in 15 years.

SIMULATED PERFORMANCE

Significant Fuel & Emission Improvements Distance traveled per shift: 46 miles Shift time: ~8 hours Moving average speed: 17.5 mph

Idling time: ~5 hours Total distance traveled in geofences: 10 miles Charging from grid: only between shifts

CO2eq* GHG Emission Reduction

~34%

Energy Consumption Reduction

~32%

Fuel Usage Per Shift

~6.2 Gallons

Miles Per Gallon Improvement

~60%

*CO2eq emissions include well-to-wheel CO2 emitted to produce electricity charged from grid, based on eGrid data

Description of customer duty cycle used in this study (correlated with logged customer data): The vehicle drives bobtail (15K lbs) from home base to the dock, picks up a container (GCW 65K lbs) and delivers it to a warehouse within a 6-mile radius, and then returns to the port with an empty ‘chassis’ (GCW 32K lbs). After delivering three containers the vehicle returns to home base bobtail. Volvo Group Trucks Technology 11
