SPORT SCIENCES AND MEDICINE SPORT SCIENCES & MEDICINE SERVICES It’s a competitive world, and to be contenders, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour athletes must perfect their game. There is more to tennis than knowing how to play; superior health and well-being are part of every winning strategy. The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s team of health care professionals takes a progressive approach to prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in sport sciences and medicine, specializing in tennis and women’s health issues. The Sport Sciences and Medicine Department (SS&M) offers comprehensive primary care which includes: athlete care programs, state-of-the-art therapy and massage therapy, as well as other high performance services.

PRIMARY CARE ATHLETE CARE Comprehensive health care of athletes includes treating the whole person. Athlete care incorporates physical therapy, athletic training and medical services. Athletes who require first aid, emergency care, health or medical services seek the advice and treatment from the Tour’s Primary Health Care Providers (PHCP’s) and Tournament Physicians. The on-site PHCP’s and Tournament Physicians work directly with each athlete to deliver health and medical care. This service is carried out through a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan, which emphasizes manual therapy techniques and functional therapeutic exercise. Using the Injury Tracker documentation system, all athlete care issues are well coordinated and communicated to all SS&M team members. The PHCP’s will provide an objective and measurable approach to prescribing individualized, sport-specific therapeutic exercise programs for each athlete. These exercise programs begin by focusing on the timing, stability and strength of core muscles followed by functional and tennis-specific exercises which, when combined, is a key to unleashing power and minimizing the occurrence of injury. The overall program objective is to assist the athlete in achieving her unique health and fitness goals and contributing to her overall success and performance in women’s tennis. Follow-up services are offered to all athletes to ensure continued care throughout the year, both on and off the road. This followup is conducted by the Sony Ericsson WTA SS&M team which directly coordinates the appropriate care for an athlete or communicates with the athlete’s personal medical team to streamline the health management of the athlete and ultimately provide the most comprehensive care.

MASSAGE THERAPY Our licensed massage therapists (MT) work with each athlete to prepare, treat, and assist in the recovery and maintenance processes. Each MT uses a variety of sport massage therapy techniques with the ultimate goal of keeping our athletes at their highest level of performance. Massage therapy service is available at all Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournaments. Core Sony Ericsson WTA Tour therapists provide services at both International and Premier level events; this service is complemented by qualified local massage therapists.

ATHLETE ASSISTANCE Provides athletes with educational and preventive strategies to enhance their on-court performance and cope with the many challenges of professional tennis. Assistance can be accessed through monthly education topics, the Athlete Assistance phone services and website, and via trained on-site staff, including the SS&M and PRO U™ departments.

SPORT SCIENCES AND MEDICINE PREVENTION AND EDUCATION Prevention is the key to success. The Sony Ericsson WTA SS&M team includes preventative measures which help our athletes stay at their individual level of peak performance. Through education and preventative programs, our goal is to establish a solid foundation leading to healthy, fit, strong athletes by minimizing the potential for injuries and maximizing opportunity to perform at the highest level of play. • We keep our athletes up-to date with the latest trends in sports medicine prevention by distributing monthly “Physically Speaking” topics, available on-site on the Player Zone. • We track each athlete’s physical health through our Sport Specific Annual Physical Examination. This allows our team to assist in setting yearly performance goals for the athlete. • Design individualized programs to meet our athletes’ training goals while targeting injury prevention based on the annual physical examination results. MEDICAL OUTREACH AND MEDICAL ADVISOR The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Medical Advisor acts as the primary medical consultant for Medical Services which directly manages the medical aspects of athlete care as well as providing medical support services throughout the year. Each Tournament provides a Medical Doctor on site at all times during the tournament to address the athletes medical needs. Specialists are available at each tournament, as needed. When seeking health or medical care at home, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour SS&M team assists the athletes with finding of a medical professional, which may include: physicians, physical therapists, certified athletic trainers, sports psychologists, nutritionists, podiatrists and massage therapists.

OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE-ENHANCEMENT SERVICES FUNCTIONAL BIOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENT The Tour PHCP’s offer comprehensive assessment of the athlete’s functional biomechanics, which may include foot mechanics, stroke mechanics, and the relationships between biomechanics and functional sport-specific movements. Based on results of the assessment, and in coordination with Athlete Care services, individual treatment plans are created to address an athlete’s functional biomechanics for performance enhancement. EQUIPMENT ASSESSMENT Service is provided for Sony Ericsson WTA Tour athletes who require equipment intervention such as custom orthotic devices, shoe evaluations and high performance clothing. The SS&M team incorporates the assessment of various aspects of equipment in relation to injury prevention and performance. Our team consults with outside experts and works with equipment manufacturers to provide input into the design of shoes and equipment specific to the elite female athlete’s needs. NUTRITION and HYDRATION CONSULTATIONS “Eat and Drink to Win” is our motto. We are pleased to work with USANA Health Sciences Inc., who provides nutrition and hydration assessments to Sony Ericsson WTA Tour athletes via Registered Dieticians throughout the year. These assessments incorporate the variables and demands of the lifestyle of the female tennis athlete and offer comprehensive counseling and consultations suited to meet the needs and goals of our athletes.

The Tournament Physician is required to supply the Tournament with at least two Spill Kits that can be used on court to dispose of bio-hazardous waste. It is recommended that the Spill Kits are kept with court services and the following procedures followed should there be any bio-hazardous waste on court:

On Court Procedures for the management of Bio-hazardous Material • If there is Bio-hazardous Material on court the Chair Umpire will suspend play. • The Chair Umpire will call the PHCP and Tour Supervisor to court. • The PHCP will attend to the player. • If the Bio-hazardous Material (bandages, towel etc…) is confined to the player the PHCP will ensure that medical gloves are worn at all times when handling the player and any soiled material. • The PHCP will place all soiled materials in a Bio-hazardous Material waste bag and dispose of this bag through the Tournament Physician. • If Bio-hazardous Material (more then one towel, player chair, etc…) has contaminated the court surface and/or the surrounding area, the Tournament Supervisor will call Court Services to court. • Court Services personnel must be trained and will be responsible for the removal of Bio-hazardous Material from the court and proper cleaning with germicidal/antimicrobial surface disinfectant for hard and grass surfaces and counteractant/absorbent clean for clay surfaces on the infected area • Court services personnel will wear medical gloves when handling all Biohazardous Material and dispose of it using a Bio-hazardous Material waste bag. Medical Gloves, Bio-hazardous Material waste bags and cleaning products, will be sourced through the Tournament Physician. • All Bio-hazardous waste bags will be disposed of by the Tournament Physician. Play will resume, at the discretion of the Chair Umpire, when the court is cleaned by appropriate Tournament Personnel and bleeding is controlled. If within ten minutes of the PHCP being called to court, the bleeding is not controlled; the PHCP may advise that continued play is detrimental to the player’s health. In that case, the Supervisor/Referee may retire the player from the match. Copyright © WTA Tour Inc., All Rights Reserved
