Tips for Reproducing Sheen and Textures of Objects Realistically Preface When shooting a shiny and velvety object, the texture of the object’s surface may sometimes be overemphasized or blurred on the screen. For example, if the object is a wrapped bar of soap, the image may appear as shown in the below “Before setting,” where the wrinkles are emphasized by dark shadows. This is because video cameras add a sig-

nal (DETAIL signal) that emphasizes darkto-bright transitions, in this particular case, around the wrinkles on the left side of the transparent wrapping. In such situations, the sheen and texture of the object can be reproduced more naturally by adjusting the level of the detail signal to be added.

Setting a negative (-) value softens the image, and setting a positive (+) value sharpens the image. In this case shown in the “After setting” image, the level was set to “-99.” The example shown is with the DSR-450WSL. The texture of the image may differ depending on the model being used or the lighting conditions, even if the setting value is the same. For additional information, refer to the Operating Instructions for your camera.

What is DETAIL? Detail is a function used to adjust the texture of an image (sharpness or softness of the image) by adding an electrically generated spike-shaped (detail) signal to the dark-tobright transition of the original signal.

Features of Sony Cameras Sony cameras have a DETAIL adjustment function which can be used to reproduce shiny surfaces and textures of objects more realistically. With this function activated, increasing the DETAIL LEVEL volume will sharpen the image’s picture edges, and decreasing it will soften its texture. In the case of a wrapped bar of soap, the image will have a softer texture by decreasing the DETAIL LEVEL as shown in “After setting” image where the wrinkles are not emphasized. © 2005 Sony Corporation

Sony cameras allow you to easily set an optimal DETAIL LEVEL setting for each object. For example, select a low setting for soft textures such as human skin, and select a high setting for a sharp image. Major Sony cameras with the DETAIL adjustment function DSR-450/400 series, PDW-530/510, DVW-970 series, MSW-970

What is DETAIL LEVEL? Detail level refers to the level of the detail signal, which can be adjusted in the range of -99 to +99 on the DETAIL 1 page of the PAINT menu. Changing the value from the center value 0 (default) to positive (+) values increases the DETAIL LEVEL at the horizontal (H) and

Changing the value to negative (-) values decreases the DETAIL LEVEL at the horizontal (H) and vertical (V) edges of the video signal, thus softening the image. DETAIL LEVEL -
