Performance and productivity. The R-series is for single and multi-trailer applications where performance and productivity are critical to getting the job done. Designed for the lowest cost-perkilometre, the R-series is equipped with innovations that improve fuel consumption and component durability and serviceability. It features the latest technological advancements in braking, air systems, aerodynamics and ergonomics as well as an entirely new cab interior. Innovative aerodynamics and smarter control of engine auxiliaries have improved fuel economy. A new air system includes the option of an electronically-controlled compressor that avoids charging when the engine is pulling. Instead, charging takes place when the vehicle is rolling or going downhill. Other product highlights include new frontal styling, a cab interior featuring a much smaller engine tunnel and new generation electronic disc brakes. The exhaust brake and Scania Retarder have been integrated into the brake system, and the further refinement of Scania Opticruise means the driver rarely need intervene to control gear changing.

With EBS and disc brakes standard on all air-suspended trucks, the R-series brings new levels of safety and reliability to the task. The new electrical system features CANbus-based electrical system, easy troubleshooting of all electronic control units, and bodywork electrics prepared outside the cab. The R-series cabs have passed Scania’s unique 35 km/h crash test and are impact-tested according to Swedish cab safety standards. So given all this, it’s little wonder the new R-series is the 2005 International Truck of the Year.

The best driver environment money can buy.

The R-series’ new cab brings driver comfort to new levels. A wide range of adjustments to the seat and steering column lets drivers find exactly the right position for a comfortable, relaxed posture. A new curved dashboard features new controls and instrumentation, and the steering wheel can be optioned with buttons for cruise control and sound system. The new cab interior features new seats, an almost flat floor, an abundance of storage compartments and lockers, a bed 15cm wider than the 4-series and options like automatic climate control and a folding gear lever. Controls and switches on the dashboard are located within a sweep of the forearm – there’s no need to stretch or take the eyes off the road. Scania Opticruise and Scania Retarder, for example, are activated by a combined lever on the steering column. Dashboard displays normally show only the most necessary information in order to keep the driver’s attention focused, and a warning will activate if the key is removed without setting the park brake.

Performance and fuel economy. 12-litre

The 12-litre’s main applications are local and intrastate single trailer, but it also excels in heavy distribution and construction applications. The two ADR80/00 (Euro 3) versions produce 420hp and 2100Nm and 470hp and 2200Nm. The exhaust brake produces 230kW at 2300rpm. Both engines features Scania HPI, a high-pressure fuel injection system designed for low fuel consumption. Turbocompounding boosts power on the high-output 470hp engine and reduces emissions on the new 420hp ADR80/01 (Euro 4) engine.

16-litre V8 The new 500hp 2400 Nm V8 closes the power and torque gap between the 470hp 12-litre turbocompound engine and the high-output 580hp V8. The output increase is 20hp over the previous 480hp engine, combined with a 100Nm rise in torque. The 500hp is ideal for single or multi-trailer applications in line haul, logging, or heavy haulage applications. The 580hp V8 boasts a massive 2700Nm and is the ultimate in Scania’s current engine range. The external dimensions of the V8 mean that it can be combined with the new rest cab offered on the R-series to create a uniquely compact installation ideal for some construction applications.
