10th Annual Edition Red Bull Music Academy Barcelona 2008 September 21 to October 24

2008 marks the fourth annual collaboration between the Red Bull Music Academy and Sónar Festival, celebrating synth tones and rhythm tracks with our Red Bull Music Academy Lounge. This time however, things are a bit different. Not only is it the tenth anniversary since the first Academy edition, but Barcelona is destined as the location for the Red Bull Music Academy when it kicks off later this year from September 21 to October 24. What better place to preview the Academy experience than right here at Sónar, with a selection of producers, MCs and DJs who have all called the Academy home at one time or another. After a decade of wisdom from the pioneers of club sonics and many late-night musical moments, the Red Bull Music Academy has put a few lines on our brows and glides in our strides. Over a thousand lecturers and participants have passed through our studios, at different stages in their musical journeys, and many of them are playing here at Sónar (check page 15 for the line up low down). The Red Bull Music Academy Lounge will be our EQ HQ, bumping with everything from spangled hip hop and dubby beats from Scotland, to deep Balearic boogie from Sweden, to twisted steppin’ breaks from Romania. Academy participants and lecturers are doing their thing all over the festival, so this is your indispensable guide to the deepest, freshest sounds around Sónar 2008. Keep your ears to the ground for the Red Bull Music Academy Radio Stage on Friday. Find out more on page 14.

Ramblas In The Jungle Red Bull Music Academy Barcelona 2008 September 21 to October 24

The Academy brings together the finest purveyors of studio craft with up-and-comers thirsty for knowledge from all round the globe. We’ve pitched bass camp in Berlin, Cape Town, São Paulo, London, Melbourne – and now we’re coming to Barcelona.

It’s been a decade of musical adventures in a lot of different locations, but we’ve got a feeling in our cones and bones that this one is going to be special. Over a hundred musicians and DJs from more than 30 different countries will be performing between September 21 and October 24 in the bars and clubs of the Catalonian capital. Check the website closer to the kick-off, to find out about all the shows – and keep an eye out, too, for a selection of public workshops. These are a unique chance to hear about how to build a tune from the ground up, from those who laid the foundations. Barcelona is the perfect setting for the Academy’s unique exchange of musical styles, and we’re looking forward to plenty of mixing desk magic, as good times and discoveries jostle with ideas and inspiration.

12 PM Good Paul

01 PM Mauricio Fleury

Mixtura Kolektyf, POL

São Paulo, BRA

Despite organizing jazzy broken events in Kallsz, Poland, starting his own record shop and rocking a hectic DJ career, Pawel somehow makes time to design his own party posters and produce his own mash-ups. Still, who wants to sleep when there’s crate loads of futuristic afro boogie to drop? With inspiration from Caetano Veloso, Quantic and Brazilian samba, it’s that get-up-and-go energy that makes Good Paul great.

Imagine an energetic Bagpuss, while his mice assistants play music boxes imported from Brazil, ‘80s Belgium, French new wave and Italian soundtracks, Memphis, and the late ‘80s Bronx. When he isn’t boggling minds with his musical universes, Mauricio plays with Montage and Multiplex, an electro-rock band, as well as a punk band called Bionica, and has collaborated with the Tropicalia chanteuse Karine Alexandrino and ‘60s rock diva Ulian Barrie. Micely does it!

02 PM Feebles

03 PM Jacob Korn

EXIT, AUT

Running Back, GER

A veteran of Vienna’s clubs and radio stations, Feebles’ type of soul-laden machine music is as wide and spacious as the Danube. Think soulful basslines, massive kicks with room to breathe, fluttering electronic effects, and smooth trajectories tracing an arc between artists like Carl Craig, Redshape, and Berlin’s Innervisions. Not a waltz or a pair of leather trousers in sight.

After almost a decade of sowing musical seeds, Jacob (also known as GraNuFunk) has sprouted his own genetically twisted hybrid of beats. With releases on Astrolab, and FOUR Music, his unique sound stems from broken beats to the deepest techno to glitchy hip hop and back again. His eponymous LP on Head and Arm is chock full of stylistic twists and super-colliding electronics, to create the kind of tracks that even your gran can funk.

04 PM Juan Manuel Torreblanca

05 PM Luis Davis

Mexico City, MEX

Mad Bros Records, FRA

A classic daydream believer, kid Torreblanca used to compose for squirrels, trees, and clouds, before joining the Fermatta Music Academy in Mexico City. His sound is a mixture of heartfelt lyrics, meandering keys and occasional beats, using wide orchestrations, a melancholic accordion and husky vocals. Everyone should see the world from Torreblanca’s outlook – cast in permanent sunset, with blooming flowers, campfire chords and tangential abstract melodies.

Born in NYC, this Parisian DJ and producer draws us into a world where the stars are all on 45. Tweaking his new wave vibes and groovy disco atmospheres on a rotary mixer, Luis brings a mouth-watering blend of spacious, futuristic cuts mixed up with stone cold classics from Herb Alpert, Alexander Robotnick, Talking Heads and plenty more. Looking for a place alongside Prelude, West End, Planet E, and Accidental, his new label Mad Bros is a definite tip to watch.

12 PM Richard the Third

01 PM bRUNA

leChic, ESP

12 Inch Productions, RSA

Disco Baldelli, RSA

Paradigma Musik, ESP

Having studied genetics for seven years, Reka swapped DNA for BPMs and began collecting records. After starting a club with partner-in-crime Susana, leChic became key players in the Gigolo crew, and burst out of Seville onto festival stages and DJ booths all over Europe. A DJ with a true survival instinct, Reka mutates like a virus with grooves on, shifting between old and new house, minimal acid, techno and electro. Did someone say housereka?

Jozi’s clubs bounce to the smooth, curvy afro house that T-Man is deeply down with, influenced by stellar African artists as well as polished gems from American shores like Marvin Gaye and Miss Patti Labelle. Our man with the capital T must be doing something right, as jazz legend Hugh Masekela has laid down some of his coveted burnished tones over T-Man’s grooves. With his debut album in the pipes, the future looks as bright as a brass section.

Richard knows how to throw a party, and a whole gang of styles are invited – downbeat funk, meteorite electro, and glitchy hip hop soul, all get down without a second thought. Making beat tapes for the next journey in the Dolorian is a daily operation, while at the same time pressing the reset button on Jozi night life, and mixing and remixing tracks under his Safe Mode alias. It’s tha 3rd, ya heard?

bRUNA is one hell of a mixed-up kid. Juggling the scales of Justice with the wheels of steel, this kid from Sant Cugat del Vallès in Barcelona, is down by law. Sweet indie pop melodies inform his approach to beats, and when he DJs you’re as likely to hear Adamski and Yazz as Prefuse and Aphex. Dropping tracks on Spa.RK and Paradigma, and already being a regular at the Sónar Festival, we’re looking to our Catalan man to give even guilty feet some rhythm.

08 PM Patrice Bäumel

09 PM TRG

02 PM LUMI

03 PM Dainjah

Get Physical, NED

Tempa, ROM

EMI Arabia, LEB

Disco Four, SUI

This dance floor mutant has been rocking clubs in Amsterdam and Berlin since the early nineties, melting styles like a croque monsieur and serving up twisted electronic grooves of the snappy variety. Rocking A’dams urban vantage point Club 11 every month with his ‘360’ nights, he’s also stacked a slew of remixes and 12”s on the Traum and Trapez labels. Let me hear your body talk.

This 2-step riddim grinder has been rebelling against the half-time dubstep template, while capsizing tankers with basslines the size of glaciers. A d‘n’b journo-turned-DJ/producer, he now drops dubs on labels like Heavy Pressure, Subway, Citrus and Strictly Digital, constantly pulling new fans into the TRG black hole with his dark dubby breaks. Championed by everyone from Mary Anne Hobbs to DJ Pinch, this one’s super massive, yo.

LUMI has more fingers in pies than Sweeney Todd. His projects Scrambled Eggs, Happy Melody, and LUMI are all schizoid products of a city reeling from its own civil war, as this multi-faceted producer from Beirut creates his own world of pop nous, charged ambience and no-borders noise. Recently, LUMI has been collaborating with Mouse On Mars mastermind Andi Toma and singer Mayaline Hage for his debut solo LP Two Tears In Water.

Switzerland’s Jens Joller makes you wanna holler. His sets travel through hip hop, classic breaks, and a hint of disco boogie, reflecting his deep love of digging and nuggets inherited from his pa. Sharing time between NYC and the Swiss cheese, the dialogue between US beats and European library crates just gets more animated. Expect the unexpected – blending dead prez acapellas with Big Daddy Kane, disco re-edits, and a touch of soul.

04 PM Aresha

05 PM Baris K

Singapore, SIN

Godet, TUR

A self-confessed poster girl for the multi-cultural, you can often find Aresha at local megaclub Zouk or “chain-smoking at Simpang Bedok nursing the same glass of teh-o-peng for three hours.” She runs and promotes the monthly party Locus in Singapore, for which she’s brought over dons like Digital, Dieselboy and Logistics. Promoting international drum ‘n’ bass artists locally since the age of 20, you know this DJ can throw it down and roll as hard as the best of ‘em.

Once a renowned hip hop radio DJ, Baris now flips the funk from Sunday to Monday for the blissed and blessed disco kids of Istanbul, alongside fellow diggers like Paris’ D.I.R.T.Y Sound System and Metro Area’s Darshan Jesrani. When not headlining clubs and festivals all on his ownsome, he links with galactic funk doyens like Roy Ayers, Larry Heard and Danny Wang, and brings supersized bass, gently popping guitars and a spacey, echoing synth sound that is pure, indulgent Turkish delight.

SaturdaY

12 PM Mombus

01 PM Scott

Snegiri, RUS

MBS Ltd., GER

This scientist at a polar research institute in Murmansk, Russia studies populations of Red King crabs and Northern shrimps in the Barents Sea, making music, videos, and organising festivals in his leisure time. The Mombus modus operandi is constructing bizarre and fun tunes that dredge up acoustic instruments and folky frameworks. His slanty shanties are more slippery than jellied eels – look for his work on IDM, easy listening, electro and folk compilations.

Daniel Brandt likes to take club sounds and twist them into a live music setting – a technique he’s applied to his drum ‘n’ bass band Die Spielwiese, as well as liberating the soul within the machine with The Free Electric Band. Now Scott is his latest incarnation, and every robot’s fantasy cabaret band, as he delivers cathodes the catharsis they always dreamt of, on his very own Doppelschall label. Freedom!

06 PM Fred Cherry

07 PM Alan1

02 PM Mooken Tooken Alakazam!

03 PM Black Spade

Hole In The Sky, AUS

Nature Records, ITA

Technicolour, GBR

Om Records, USA

This man behind the world-renowned Cardboard City 7” label and brand new Hole In The Sky might not be an octopus, but that doesn’t stop Perth’s very own heavy hitter from owning four drum kits, and pounding out raw garage rock with Bobby Blackbird and the Bluejays. He’s also the driving force behind the Milton Chambers Experience, whose ‘Journey To Planet Pluto’ rocked asteroid belts across the cosmos with its trippy ‘70s organ solo and fat cinematic funk. Cherry picked breaks as fat as yo momma.

Rome’s latest techno electro exponent has flown on the wings of releases like Dunkin Doner and Drugstore Warriors to the dirtiest dancefloors from Berlin to Glasgow. Even sonic extremists like Autechre have been giving props to a sound that Alan 1 describes as “dance, analog, ‘80s and dirty.” Using Ableton Live, his set will have your feet jacking with Moog phatty basslines, analog synth stabs and techno funk from the future. Get your wriggle on!

Tales of the unexpected could be the subtext to Mooken’s mixes, if they stood still long enough to let a subtext get its grubby mitts on them. Dropping mixtapes that Boomkat reckon “show a crate digging skill that would make the most merciless of geeks feel a little flaccid,” is all in a day’s work, as Mooken gets lovers of eclectic adventurous music all hot under the collar. Look out for his Ono label, too – supa fresh and limited!

STL was never gonna hold this guy for long. Black Spade doesn’t make albums, but statements – about life, love, music and true friends. His long player To Serve With Love is a collection of tracks that threaten to break out of hip hop’s vacpac cellophane and chart a bold, erratic course for the fullest effect. Throw in some Shuggie Otis styles with Cody ChesnuTT acoustics, and you have the snap shot of a future classic. Damn!

08 PM Akiko Kiyama

09 PM JohnnyTooBad

04 PM Sankt Göran

05 PM Mat 64

Contexterrior, JPN

Sleepless, SWE

Bear Funk Gold, SWE

Cervello Meccanico Records, ITA

From Tokyo to Berlin, Akiko has sharpened her shuffling minimal techno into twisting, sinister tracks packed full of tiny details and surprises. After studying classical music, and falling for drum‘n’ bass, she started making her own tracks, and in just a few years was bitten by the techno bug. Now she’s released tunes on Sud Electronic, Revolver, Thema and District of Corruption as well as featuring on Richie Hawtin’s ‘DE9 Transitions’. Time for a piyama party!

It all happens after dark for our Nordic cousins, as proved by Gothenburg’s sleek night mover JohnnyTooBad. Taking his tips from Scando ubergroovers Mark Seven, Red Astaire and Jesper Dahlbäck, Johnny has been flat-packin’ ‘em in to techno saunas all over Sweden for the last five years. Together with his brother, he often mutates into the two-headed party animal Hermanos, bringing a massage-deep mix of house, disco, dub and rock. Jump out your box.

What is it with those Nordic types and their general talent for all things spacey, funky and soulfully electronic? This energetic Swede can be found DJing all around the Scando region with his brother, Sleepless, as the DJ duo Hermanos. Playing his own brand of deep and cosmic body music, Göran hosts his weekly party at The Docks in Gothenburg, with guests such as Brennan Green and Rune Lindbaek. Go check for your spacetronic fix.

Packing more electro krunch than an 8-bit punch, Rome’s Mat 64 should give you enough power-ups to defeat any end-of-level monsters. Producing five albums in the past seven years and now a contender on Marco Passarani’s Final Frontier label, his is a one player world of monochrome graphics and stick-inyour-head melodies, bleeping you straight back to the golden era of Commodore kids and Spectrum heads. Insert credit.

06 PM Hudson Mohawke Warp, GBR

Hudson mixes deep bass with synth encounters of the third kind, and the type of cone-wobbling mix that should probably be criminalized. Discerning DJs worldwide snap up whatever he puts out, from skewed hip hop with Mike Slott as Heralds Of Change, to abstract synth beats and spangled r ‘n’ b rerubs. Having recently signed to Warp, you know he’s gonna be heavy. Better practise those sundance steps.

07 PM Carola Pisaturo Claque Musique, ITA

Since turntables first beckoned in ’97, this young lady has cultivated fluid, plastic grooves with the expertise of an electronic botanist. She brings new meaning to the phrase ‘blooming techno’ – it just keeps sprouting up around her. After graduating in sound engineering, she built a studio in Naples, and has dropped releases on Bush and Southsoul Records. Setting up her Titbit Music and Claque Musique labels has given her even more room to blossom. Flower to the floor!

All sets from the Red Bull Music Academy Lounge – on demand. www.redbullmusicacademyradio.com 08 PM XXXChange

09 PM mari.cha

Spank Rock, USA

Higher Love, GRE

This is the real exchange rate mechanism. Big Apple resident XXXChange got everyone off the wall with his trax for Philly rapper Spank Rock, and has since been producing and remixing the great and the good, from Santogold and Kid Sister to Thom Yorke and The Kills. A far cry from studying jazz drums at nuff conservatories and a spell at the DFA office, but in the world of global economics and virtual futures, it all makes hella sense…

This is the kind of disco we’re feeling – deep and wayward with some serious cosmic side effects. mari.cha super-charges the decks of bars and clubs along Thessaloniki with a heady selection of retarded house beats and spaced out hip hop, with plenty of deep psych rock and funk rarities thrown in for good measure. You’ll be hoping that Greek lightning strikes twice with this selection of sick left-footed grooves.

Theo Parrish has been a lecturer and member of the studio team at the Academy, sharing production tricks and know-how for the past three years. The ultimate minister in the church of vinyl will be recruiting passengers for his deep-filtered excursion beyond the sonar system, powered by a mix of interplanetary funk and galactic jazz. Spread Love Other Places To Catch The Good Stuff

The Red Bull Music Academy Lounge isn’t the only place to witness the spirit of the Academy at the Sónar Festival – there’s plenty of alumni playing on other stages as well through the course of the three days. From dirty autobahn techno from our gentleman in Berlin Ewan Pearson, to M.I.A.’s call to rave, armed with the kind of melodies they could down the Nou Camp with. You can find LA beat sensation and ex-Academy participant Flying Lotus dropping his vision of the future of hip hop, while Parisian digger extraordinaire Pilooski, a participant in Rome in ’04, brings heavy disco origami with the D.I.R.T.Y. System and Cape Town alum Jneiro Jarel contributes his own Philadelphian fragmented beats with Shape of Broad Minds at Sónar By Day. Matt Edwards of Quiet Village presents hypnotic and cinematic mantras while the Franco-Canadian alliance sifts through more fools gold so that DJ Mehdi and A-Trak can bring you a drop of the good stuff. They’ve all been lecturers and participants at some point – so for a snap shot of what tomorrow will sound like, get your behind to the Red Bull Music Academy Lounge, where a whole heap more Academy alumni unload their machines and crates. 17
