Interestingly, there seems to be more avidity for Riopelle outside Canada: a 1951 Riopelle, Composition, was sold by Christie's auction house in London in June of this year for more than $1.5-million, enough to make it the fourth most valuable Canadian painting ever sold at auction anywhere. A rare painting by Paul Kane that had not been seen in Canada for 150 years sold last evening during Sotheby’s auction of Important Canadian Art, conducted in association with Ritchie’s, for $5,062,500. The sale price for Kane’s Scene in the Northwest – Portrait (c.1845), a depiction of the British Surveyor Captain J. H. Lefroy, was the highest price ever paid for a Canadian work of art. Brought from England, the 19th century painting was a record for the artist as well, far exceeding the presale estimate of $450,000 to $550,000. Overall the sale brought $6,847,818, the highest auction total in Canada’s history

the Canadian auction world -- sometimes called the resale or secondary art market : An Investor's Guide to the Canadian Art Market, a recently published 25-year survey by Anthony Westbridge, notes that in 2001, 1.2 million transactions, auction and retail, occurred internationally, generating sales of close to $24-billion (U.S.). But Canada accounted for only about 0.8 per cent of that activity. Yet things have never been better. As Westbridge notes, between 1998 and 2001, the average price for a Canadian painting sold at auction rose 54 per cent. In fact, the resale art market in this country has been booming since 1997, with the last two years being especially strong, thanks to the much-reported sales of Harris's Baffin Island; Emily Carr's War Canoes, Alert Bay (sold for $1,018,750, with buyer's premium, in May, 2000, by the Heffels); Jean-Paul Riopelle's Composition ($1,311,000 in June, 2002, at Christie's London) and, most spectacularly, Paul Kane's Scene in the Northwest (a record-setting $5.063 million, with buyer's premium, in February, 2000, at Sotheby's/ Ritchie's). Of the top 15 Canadian paintings sold at auction since the mid-1970s, nine were purchased in just the last three years, with the top two going to one collector alone, the aforementioned Kenneth Thomson.
