The combination of J.S. Bach’s original music, and Anton Webern’s orchestration of it, in one of Bach’s © Marco Borggreve
most amazing “constructions” ever, is a real, ultimate hit-treat! Only Anton Webern, of all composers, could have found so many ways of colouring this amazing piece of music, with such a sense of sensitive discovery for every single note, but still without losing anything in the grand shape of it all. To open a concert with such a special little orchestral masterpiece demands you to continue on the highest possible compositional level. I think we are doing that, with one of Mozart’s most beautiful and richly orchestrated piano concertos. And, of course, I’m delighted to end this concert with Jean Sibelius’s First Symphony, which is the most youthfully energetic and dramatic symphonic work he ever wrote.

Considering how beautiful every Mozart concerto is, this one, K. 453, is a particularly wonderful example of Mozart’s ingenuity, even at a relatively early age. The first movement reflects the glow of his youthfulness. The second, by contrast, is intense — even profound, in a way that seems to me to anticipate the great later works of Mozart. The finale brings the concerto to a particularly satisfying, even magical, conclusion. So graceful and pleasing throughout. It is surely, to me at least, one of Mozart’s greatest concerti. Playing it is both a humbling and joyful experience for me.
