REFLECTION | RÉFLEXION Sibelius and Busoni — you cannot find two artists more different. They found each other in their youth and stayed good friends for a long time. As composers they were polar opposites: Sibelius very carefully created a world of his own in his symphonies, whereas Busoni composed music full of quotations, as well as writing many transcriptions and adaptations. And Busoni composed rather fast, in fact his Lustspiel-Ouvertüre was written in one night. But the two composers did agree on one thing — musical form. They also both felt that nationalism in music can be limiting, yet this did not stop Sibelius' Second Symphony from becoming a symbol of national liberation.

REFLECTION | RÉFLEXION I’m thrilled to be premiering this exciting new work by Gary Kulesha with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Gary and I exchanged emails early on in the process about what kind of vocal writing I enjoy singing, and from those emails he composed this amazing work — and gave me everything on my vocal wish list! It has great range, beautiful colours, contrasting scenes, and the profound and dramatic nature of the text, taken from the personal diary entries of Virginia Woolf, make it a singer’s dream come true.
