It fascinates me how many of the greatest classical works © Fred Cattroll
were written by young men. Neither Schubert (31), Mozart (35) nor Mendelssohn (38) made it past 40 and even the septua- and octogenarians crafted many of their masterpieces in their early years. Tonight we meet two such prodigies. Bizet wrote his Symphony as a 17-year-old student and Carmen in the final year of his life, aged 36. Both showcase his miraculous gifts. Nico Muhly — a colourful, brilliant, eclectic, thoughtful composer — is, at 34, just such a prodigy and I am proud and delighted that the NAC has co-commissioned this major new work.

This concerto is, in some ways, the culmination of about ten years of © Samantha West
collaboration between Nico and me. We met in college, during my undergrad, and bonded over a mutual appreciation of dumplings and coffee and English choral music. It was well-known that Nico was a quick and generous composer, and I’m pretty sure the first “commission” he got from me was inspired by a too-short recital program. We quickly discovered, however, that our collaborative dynamic was exceptional and exciting, and we haven’t stopped working together since. We’ve been daydreaming about a concerto ever since, and I’m so glad the day has finally come! The piece is gorgeous and elegant and affecting and it’s one of my favourite Nico pieces to date.
