SHIJO X – PRESS (UK) BLUESBUNNY The city never sleeps at night and that city that never sleeps needs a soundtrack. A soundtrack that finds the fairytales of the past in every shadow and every street corner. With the release of their album “If A Night”, Italian band Shijo X have provided such a soundtrack. Punctuating the songs with instrumental interludes shows that Shijo X have that whole walk under the street lights of the post midnight urban nightmares planned out and you can feel the rhythms of the night in each and every song. Keeping us company on this journey across reality into dreamland is the delightfully poised voice of Laura Sinigaglia and she spins each song into a fairytale spiced with a touch of the exotic. Taking “Almost in Trouble” as an example, you could make an entire musical based on this band’s distinctly quirky take on the whole Prince Charming Cinderella dynamic. Equally impressive is the sinuous yet twisted “Uptown Bike that turns neatly on its lyrical self. Perhaps the most important point – and this does seem to be a common trait amongst the European bands that I hear – is that this album is actually interesting to listen to. The musicianship is of a high standard and care has gone into the production which makes “If A Night” an album to be savoured both in its entirety and, indeed, time and time again.(5/5)

Avec tout ce que j’ai à faire, j’ai souvent l’impression que le temps de sommeil est du temps perdu. Il y a quand même des choses plus intéressantes à faire la nuit que de bêtement s’affaler sur un oreiller et de pioncer la bouche ouverte. Lorsque s’éteignent une à une les fenêtres de mes voisins, lorsque les lumières de la ville ne font plus qu’un avec les étoiles scintillantes, lorsque rêve et réalité se confondent, alors, en ce point unique, à ce moment précis qui n’est plus jour ou pas encore, je sens naître en moi un intense sentiment de liberté. Toutes mes pesanteurs s’effondrent, mes chaînes se brisent et l’inspiration jaillit tel un geyser de mon cerveau embrumé. Je dissimule mes doutes dans l’obscurité et je me lance, homme-canon nyctalope, dans une course folle entre les rues d’une ville imaginaire. J’y croise mes héros, ou ceux qui bientôt le deviendront : chanteurs bourrés de talent et de talons d’Achille, écrivains décrivant des arcs de cercle de leur plume imbibée d’encre et d’alcool, mon meilleur ami nouvelliste dont je suis resté trop longtemps sans nouvelles. Tout me semble, comme par un coup de baguette magique, plus beau, plus riche, plus consistant, plus vrai. Les rêves sont réels tant qu’ils durent, disait un homme sage dont j’ai oublié le nom. L’album…If A Night du groupe italien Shijo X dure 39 minutes et 16 secondes mais raconte une aventure qui se passe entre 2 heures et 6 heures du matin. Mettez le disque dans le lecteur. Fermez les yeux. Vous êtes à Bologne. Il est 2 heures du matin. Vous êtes perdu dans un dédale de vélos abandonnés. Laissez vous bercer par les rythmes noctambules et la voix caressante de Laura Sinigaglia. ...If A Night est une passerelle musicale entre la réalité et le pays des rêves. Tantôt sinueux, sombre ou onirique, le disque explore toute une palette d’humeurs sans se départir de ses inspirations trip-hop. Il y a du Portishead et du Massive Attack chez Shijo X. Mais loin de rester cantonnés à ses illustres prédécesseurs, le groupe italien fait preuve d’inventivité, de virtuosité et d’une capacité étonnante à créer une atmosphère cohérente tout au long de l’album. s’estompent à la tombée du jour, …If A Night peut de toute évidence s’écouter comme un concept-album, comme la bande-son d’une folle virée nocturne. C’est aussi une collection de titres consistants individuellement. Du classique Uptown Bike au captivant In (the) Moscow, mon morceau préféré, Shijo X démontre une facilité déconcertante à accoucher de petites pépites. Le disque s’immobilise dans le lecteur. RADIOCITTA’ FUJIKO - the album,composed of pleasent nightly melodies, is a quality product, but the real dimension of this band is on stage. Only with a live exhibition you can find a potential not expressed in the sound recordings, an emotion that manifests itself thanks to the live performance.
(UK) GETINTOTHIS The intriguing Mail Chimp stage/record store holds Italian outfit Shijo. Their set is by all means ideal considering the intimate set up; leaning on bundles of records while the quartet cram into a corner. An admirable range of synth effects ranging from video game sounds to Pink Floyd inspired rattling coins was on display. Accompanied by hip hop/jazz inspired beats and basslines of a similar ilk to BadBadNotGood and vocals that recall Lady Gaga their was certainly a welcomed experimental set up with an atmosphere that was only going to get better.
(NL) CALEIDOSCOOP – SUBJECTIVISTEN – JAN WILLEM BROEK Via sommige promotiekanalen kom je met de onbekendste bands in aanraking, die dikwijls helemaal niet onder doen voor hun bekendere geestverwanten. Via Five Roses kom ik veel uit de Italiaanse scene tegen, die heel divers en rijk is, ook in de underground. Zo ook deze groep Shijo X. In 2009 debuteert dit Italiaanse duo Davide Verticelli (piano, synthesizer) en Laura Sinigaglia (zang) met hun cd One Minute Before, waarmee ze hun eerste schreden op het triphop-pad met jazzy elementen zetten. Daarna wordt de band al snel aangevuld met Federico Fazia (bas) en Federico Adriana (drums), die het geluid meer body geven. Nu is er het langverwachte tweede album …If A Night, de opnames zijn al in 2010 gestart, waarop ze de nacht als inspiratiebron hebben gebruikt. Ze openen met lekkere triphop die door de zang en de duistere sfeer meteen associaties oproept met Portishead. Daarna komen ook de meer jazzy en dubachtige geluiden om de hoek kijken. De muziek wentelt zich als een droefgeestige, droom door de donkere, dronken nacht, waarbij je van jazzclub naar loungetent gaat. Gedurende de plaat zijn er ook fellere, meer experimentele en drum ‘n’ bass-achtige stukken te horen, maar meestal blijven ze in zwoele, nachtelijke sferen hangen. De zang van Laura is overigens een heerlijke om de nacht mee door te komen, beetje vintage, jazzy en licjt melancholisch. De rest van de groep vouwt zich daar prima omheen met bijzondere beats, lekker stuwende bassen, pianoriedels en allerhande elektronische sfeermakers. Naast Portishead kan je ook Archive, 12 Rounds, Garbage, Goldfrapp, Breakbeat Era en bovenal Massive Attack duiden als invloeden. En dan kan je niet anders concluderen dat je een geweldig album in handen hebt, waar je anders niet zo snel op zou zijn gekomen. Opwindende nachtmuziek!

Next destination was Shijo X at the Record Store Stage. Unfortunately there was bugger all room in the Record Store Stage due to the fact that half of the tent was taken up with tables selling vinyl and merch, which meant that a whole bunch of people that actually wanted to see the band couldn't get in. This isn't the band's fault, obviously, but it's poor implementation on the part of the organisers. From what I could hear and see of the band, they were pretty excellent. If you like Portishead (and I very much do), then you'll enjoy Shijo X. But on the bright side, I bought their album, so expect a review next Sunday! REVIEW: Pour me a bourbon, I’m in a dystopian noir future with monsters under my bed and in my head, questionable gravity and cold war paranoia. Ah well, leastways I still look good in a trilby. Ah well, better review a new album that just so happens to be about all of these things, the debut album from Shijo X. Bologna by Night is full of the smoky jazz stylings and triphop of Portishead, whilst being a low key noir about a woman who doesn’t want to get out of bed claiming “I’m not sad, not blue, not mad/I just want to lay on my bed,” but everything she says in the song contradicts this verse when she sings of her apathy and ennui. The character even has ennui about people telling her to “Do something” to get out of her funk, so she says “So, I’ll make you happy/I’ll turn on TV...” an act of bored rebellion that can’t help but make you crack a wry grin. Bad Bed, six tracks on is a trippy, treatise on the villains and monsters that dwell underneath our beds and in the inky darkness of our subconscious mind, skilfully mixing in samples of music boxes and warping Laura Sinigaglia’s vocals into something swirling and menacing to evoke the feeling of being trapped in the nightmare of your own ruinous imagination. Uptown Bike is reminiscent of what would happen if Olive was mixed in with the original Doctor Who theme by Delia Derbyshire, with heavy synths building up to a crescendo, mimicking the frantic pedalling of the bike in the song, out of control and onwards to an inexorable fate. In (The) Moscow is about drunken disorientation and translocation in a different country, a country completely alien to the character in the song: “Why is not working gravity?/Why that big bright sun is green?” Feeling drunk isn’t too dissimilar a feeling of disorientation as being in a foreign country for the first time, with no idea how to speak the language and desperately trying to acclimate to the situation whilst having no idea what you’re doing or where you’re going. Shijo X has delivered a promising debut, experimental yet you can dance to it, polished but not overproduced. This is an album to dance to in a darkened room with wild abandon, it is worth your time and your ears.
(NL,BE,LU) RIFRAF musiczine Italiaanse band die zich in de kijker weten te spelen… ze zijn niet dik gezaaid. Shijo X tracht daar met “…If A Night” verandering in te brengen. De plaat zou zich af moeten spelen tussen 2 en 6 uur’s nachts. Muzikaal vertalen ze dit in de Portishead-achtige triphop “Bologna By Night”, een Massive Attack-achtige “Colors” en het jazzy “Almost In Trouble”. Maar een rustige nacht is het zeker niet. In “Runnin” lijkt het resultaat van een
koortsachtige nacht-merrie en “Bad Bed” is een stukje slapeloze nacht. Een gevarieerd en heel on-italiaans plaatje.
(DE) SOUNDandIMAGE (DE) SOUNDandIMAGE Wenn im CD-Begleittext einer neuen jungen Band ein Vergleich zu hinlänglich bekannten und etablierten Künstlern gezogen wird, ist wie immer Vorsicht geboten. Im Falle der italienischen Band Shijo X fällt schnell das Stichwort „Portishead”, bezogen auf den ersten Titel dieser CD. OK, soundmäßig ist das sicher nicht ganz von der Hand zu weisen, erweist sich aber im weiteren Verlauf des Album als nicht weiter haltbar, denn das Quartet aus Bologna verfolgt zunehmend eigene, interessante Wege und die Sängerin Laura Sinigaglia ist letztenendes auch keine Beth Gibbons. Dennoch ist es der italienische PostTripHop-Trip wert, näher untersucht zu werden. Also: die Beats und die Arrangements sind durch die Bank hörerfreundlich und auf der Höhe der Zeit angelegt, werden durch jazzige Passagen und elektronische Effekte immer wieder auf Linie gebracht. Sinigaglia’s Stimme thront über allem und verleiht den Songs einen leichten Anflug von Erotik. Das was früher mal Drum ’n’ Bass hieß, hat sich mittlerweile in weniger nervige Rhythmen gewandelt und auch hier wissen die vier Musiker mit guten Ideen zu überzeugen. Definitiv ein Album für Nachteulen, so wie es der Albumtitel suggeriert.
(BE) MUSICINBELGIUM – OLIVIER DAHON Shijo X s’est formé en 2009 autour d’un duo (Davide Verticelli et Laura Sinigaglia). Leur premier album (“One Minute Before”) sort la même année. En 2010, la formation s’élargit avec l’arrivée d’un batteur (Federico Adriani) et d’un bassiste (Federico Fazia). En 2011, vainqueurs d’un concours régional (l’Italia Wave Festival), ils se produisent sur scène en première partie de Kaiser Chiefs et de Paolo Nutini. “…If a night” est un mélange de souvenirs, d’odeurs et de couleurs, un voyage imaginaire dont le point de départ serait une nuit à Bologne. La méfiance que l’on peut porter à l’entreprise (des Italiens qui chantent en anglais, hum hum) s’efface, heureusement surpris par ce croisement entre Portishead et Hooverphonic. Une ambiance de trip-hop légère et de salon, portée par la voix de la chanteuse Laura Sinigaglia. À l’écoute d’“Uptown bike” balancé sur un tempo reggae, il semblerait que nos voisins transalpins ont trouvé leur Selah Sue; “In the Moscow” montre un savant usage des synthés tendance « drum and bass » ; “Television”, tendance jazz, laisse plus de place au piano. Un peu plus loin, “Colors”, un des titres phares de l’album, donne une couleur plus sombre, quasi cinématographique à cette rêverie, puisant son inspiration vers Massive Attack. En contraste, “Almost in trouble” est un aparté jazzy où la voix de Laura fait des prouesses. On sent poindre l’aube sur“Zabriskie’s Bench”, et la fin du rêve avec “Krueger” et “6AM”. La notte, la notte… chantait Étienne Daho dans les années 80. Shoji X a fait lui le pari d’une nuit italienne chantée en anglais, et il s’en sort avec brio.
(FR) MUZZART – REDAK Groupe italien, ce qui nous amène à croire de façon avérée à la fiabilité de ce pays en termes de combos tous genres et de valeur, Shijo X sort avec …If a night son second album. Il y développe de belles trames, retenues mais de caractère, aux effluves jazzy classieuses qui se frottent à des encarts trip-hop ou electro bien amenés (Zabriskie’s bench). Des plages sombres et enjouées à la fois (Television), parfois acidulées, mettent le disque en valeur et une multitude de sons attrayants font de même. L’adjonction des éléments ainsi créés débouche sur une réalisation attrayante, qui gagnerait toutefois peutêtre à s’écarter d’une prudence générale dans le ton à mon sens un peu trop roborative. Il
n’empêche, tous les morceaux offerts sont de bon niveau, les climats développés assez personnels, dotés d’un joli charme rétro, pour convaincre en dépit d’une attitude réservée, et on se laisse assez facilement prendre au jeu de ce trip-hop à la voix féminine élégante, et ce dès Bologna by night qui inaugure les festivités. Sur la fin, un alerte Krueger donne le ton d’une folie à la B 52’s qu’il serait intéressant de réinstaurer sur les albums à venir pour insuffler au répertoire de Shijo X ce brin de folie qui ferait définitivement la différence. Bon essai donc, étayable mais intéressant de bout en bout, que ce …If a night qui recèle belles aptitudes.
(PT) COISASDAINTERWEBS Vindo directamente da Itália, os Shijo X irão lançar a 5 de Novembro em território europeu o seu mais recente disco, “if a night”. Este álbum, que dura cerca 40 minutos vale por muitas horas, começando com uma pequena introdução com “02 a.m”, seguindo para os temas mais virados para o synth pop, como é o caso de “Bologna By Night” e ” Uptown Bike”. O melhor tema do disco é aquele que passa bastante cedo, “In (the) Moscow”, com a brutalidade subtil do teclado, juntamente com a voz suavizante de Laura Sinigaglia. Chegando a uma parte do tema, temos um grande solo entre todos os instrumentos tocados, provocando um extâse musical, que continua nos temas “Television” e “Runnin’”. Mas é a partir de “04 a.m.” que ele acalma os ânimos para temas mais leves, levando para o mundo de sonho que é retratado em “Bad Bed” e que é distorcido em “Colors”. O disco continua algo lento até chegarmos prestes ao fim, com o grande tema, fortemente influenciado por batidas de drum ‘n bass, “Krueger”, que levanta os espíritos duma forma muito agressiva. Resumindo, “if a night” é um álbum que mais se assemelha a uma aventura do inicio ao fim, começando ás 2 da manhã, numa melancolia, ás 6 da manhã, com uma energia para despertar, “if a night” é um álbum a não perder. Para os fãs de Portishead e Florence & The Machine.
