La destinée d’Alexandre le Grand est à l’origine de l’un des mythes historico-littéraires qui a joui de la plus remarquable diffusion dans le temps et dans l’espace. Dans ce champ d’investigation très vaste,

l’objet des trois premiers tomes de notre ouvrage n’est pas d’étudier la naissance de l’écriture sur le Macédonien, mais d’analyser comment la transmission et la réécriture des textes antiques en Europe, à partir du Xe siècle et jusque dans la première moitié du XVIe siècle, sont à l’origine d’une floraison d’œuvres littéraires qui montrent la création d’une figure médiévale et renaissante d’Alexandre, à la fois une et multiple. Le corpus choisi s’inscrit donc dans une longue durée – six siècles et demi– et il prend en compte les littératures de l’Europe occidentale (médio-latine, française, italienne, hispanique et aljamiada, hébraïque, anglaise, allemande, néerlandaise et scandinave) et celles de l’Europe orientale (slaves, avant tout tchèque, serbe et russe, byzantine avec son développement arménien). La nécessité s’impose en effet de dépasser les frontières entre les langues et les littératures, pour comprendre le sens des réinventions du mythe d’Alexandre à l’échelle du continent européen. Nos recherches ont permis d’analyser les modalités et les ressorts de cette effervescence créatrice sans précédent autour du souvenir d’Alexandre, de comparer les couleurs spécifiques de chacune des littératures européennes et de mettre au jour leurs interactions, en lien avec la naissance d’un vaste espace littéraire européen.

Two of the texts, Oxford (3,995 ll., in a manuscript from the second quarter of the 12th century) and Venice 4 (6,011 ll., 14th-century MS), follow the tradition in assonance. The other five substantial texts, plus three fragments, are in rhyme: Châteauroux and Venice 7 (8,203 and 8,333 ll. respectively, both end of the 13th century), Paris (6,828 ll., acephalic, third quarter of the 13th century), Cambridge (5,695 ll., acephalic, first half of the 15th century), Lyon (2,932 ll., acephalic, late 13th or early 14th century), and the Lavergne, Bogdanow, and Michelant fragments (108, 160, and 352 ll. respectively, all late 13th century). Each edition is based on a new transcription made directly from the manuscript. The editorial method corresponds to the nature of each text. An introduction that treats questions of codicology, philology, and method introduces each text, and each is provided with a critical apparatus of rejected readings and paleographic notes, explanatory notes, an index of proper names, and a glossary of words and forms that are not found in the standard desk dictionaries of Old French.

Despite its status as a masterpiece of world literature, the Song of Roland has only been available in English in translations based on the Oxford manuscript whose text dates to around 1100. But the medieval corpus of the Roland consists of seven substantial manuscripts, two in assonance and five in rhyme. The only complete text among the rhymed versions is found in two manuscripts housed respectively in Châteauroux and Venice, and thus known as CV7, which has never before been translated into a modern language. CV7 dates to the end of the twelfth century. It introduces five new episodes and expands others substantially, transforming the substance and sense of the narrative.The role of Aude is recomposed, raising her standing to one of the most important characters in the poem. Students of the epic and those taking courses on medieval literature and history will experience the vitality and mutability of the genre in the course of the century in which many of the great French epics and romances were composed. The present volume contains complete translations of Oxford and CV7, plus an introduction, notes, and indices of proper names and place-names that pertain to both texts.

SKALDIC POETRY OF THE SCANDINAVIAN MIDDLE AGES The Norse-Icelandic Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages project aims to produce a new edition of the known corpus of skaldic verse, including runic inscriptions in metrical form. In practice this means editing all poetry supposed to be from earliest times until c. 1400, which does not belong to the collection in the Codex Regius of the Elder Edda and related collections.This is the first edition of the skaldic corpus from first principles since Finnur Jónsson's Den Norsk-Islandske Skjaldedigtning (1912-15). It will be published in book form as a critical edition with an English translation, editorial apparatus and notes. It will, however, in all cases re-examine the manuscript evidence for the poetic texts and their contexts. The edition will be produced in eight volumes, each one based on distinct source categories arranged in assumed chronological order, so that the manuscript contexts in which the poetry has been preserved will be kept in view.This basis of selection, plus the inclusion of an English translation and notes, should prove useful to readers outside skaldic studies, such as historians, archaeologists and scholars of other medieval literatures, who have previously found skaldic verse rather inaccessible. The volume of runic poetry will also contain images of the objects on which the inscriptions were carved.
