First the proposer offers a split of the money. He/she may choose any amount between $0 and the maximum which he/she demands for himself/herself. The difference is what the proposer offers to the respondent.

Proposer: Once your offer has been made, click on the "Send my offer" button (see an example below). A pop-up message will confirm the sending of the offer, click on OK to close it and click on next.The server will then search for another Respondent. You will make your offers via similar offer forms than in the previous quiz.
The game will proceed as follows. There will be several rounds of bargaining games with $1 to be distributed in each round. Your role (Proposer or Respondent), that will be randomly decided further on, will last the entire session. However, your partner will change from round to round.
If you don't click on the "Send my offer" button, the offer will not be sent to the Respondent and hence, you will not win any money this round. Also, if no offer is sent during the 30 seconds delay, the server will automatically search for another Respondent and you will neither win any money this round.
Each round, the proposer will receive an offer form (similar to the one presented in the quiz). The proposer will have thirty seconds to make his/her offer, a proposed amount for himself/herself and the rest for the respondent. All offers must be in $0.05 increments.

Upon receipt of the proposer's offer, the respondent will have to act. Knowing the amount to be distributed ($1) and the proposer's demand, the respondent must then decide whether to accept or reject the offer. The respondent will also have thirty seconds for his/her decision. Proposers will then be informed about the outcome when all decisions have been made and another round will start.
Respondent: Once your decision has been made, click on the "Send my decision" button (see an example below). A pop-up message will confirm the sending of the decision, click on OK to close it and click on next. The server will then search for another Proposer. You will receive your offers via similar offer forms than in the previous quiz.
You will play a total of 8 rounds.
If you don't click on the "Send my decision" button, the decision will not be sent to the Proposer and hence, you will not win any money this round. Also, if no decision is sent during the 30 seconds delay, the server will automatically search for another Proposer and you will neither win any money this round.
As previously described, the payoffs will be the proposed amount for the proposer and the residual amount for the respondent if the respondent accepts the offer. Otherwise, both proposer and respondent will receive $0.

This study is inspired from the literature on social class which highlighted that individuals have a tendency to behave differently based on their social class. A team of researchers notably reported that the more individuals earned as a salary and the less likely they were to evenly share a small amount of money when doing the type of task you just completed (for more details, see http://bit.ly/NCj0mt). Also, because social economical status can stigmatize individuals (Johnson, Richeson & Finkel, 2011), it has been evoked that the most educated individuals could been viewed as deserving more than less educated ones (such as deserving a higher access to high-status universities or higher salaries for instance; Ridgeway, 2014).
When you refused an offer, it was because the offer was not viewed as acceptable. When you refused an offer, it was done so that the proposer would not receive anything.
In this study, we wanted to investigate how individuals deal with unfair situations. Indeed, if a lot of researches focused on how individuals act when they are in a situation of control, only a few has focused on how they behave when confronted with unfair situations. To acquire some knowledge on this regard, all participants have been assigned to the role of respondents. Furthermore, all the offers you received were electronically controlled in order to confront all participants with the same information. We will further investigate if we can observe some difference on the level of acceptance as a function of the type of offers as well as of the level of education and the participants' earnings.
