Post Doctoral Fellowship Immediate Opening in Paris, France The laboratoire d’Imagerie Paramétrique (LIP), CNRS & Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris) is seeking an individual to collaborate on research in diagnostic ultrasound. The Laboratoire d’Imagerie Paramétrique has a strong expertise in tissue ultrasound characterization in a wide range of frequency. The research deals with numerical simulation of wave propagation in bone and the development of new quantitative ultrasound methods and medical technologies for the diagnosis of bone pathologies. The appropriate candidate should have a doctoral degree in Physical acoustics, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a field related to medical imaging and device instrumentation. This position is cross disciplinary. The successful candidate will work on a project that is funded by ANR (French Agency for National Research). He/she will have the opportunity to participate in research within one of the leading laboratory in the world in the field of bone quantitative ultrasound. The project falls within one of the main research field of the laboratory which is the development of quantitative ultrasound methods to assess bone mechanical properties in vivo to enhance fracture risk prediction. The post doc will be involved in the improvement of a bone characterization method based on axial transmission measurements. Long bones are known to support guided waves propagation. The guided mode velocities are measured using a multi emitter – multi receiver array in contact with the bone (in vitro) or with the skin (in vivo). The measurement method has been developed at LIP and has been validated on absorbing and anisotropic waveguides with constant thickness. The post doc will first measure guided mode velocities on bone mimicking phantoms and in vitro samples using clinical probes to validate the method on more realistic cases taken into account the effects of the soft tissue, the marrow and actual bone geometries. The objective is to optimize the method in order to obtain reliable in vivo measurement on different clinical site such as the forearm (radius) or the leg (tibia). The post doc will then take part to the clinical validation. He will participate to the preparation and to clinical tests to be performed in Tours or in Paris. The research project requires individuals that have Biomedical Engineering background with basic skills in physical acoustics, guided waves, ultrasonic measurement techniques. He/she has a strong background in fundamental ultrasonics, signal and image processing, and an interest in medical Imagining device development, experiments and laboratory work that deals with the understanding of how ultrasound interact with bone. Above and beyond one of these interests, the candidate must possess a strong aptitude for originality in research design and implementation as evidenced in documented scientific accomplishments. The research could begin as soon as September 2011. Funding is for a 12 months period, and can be extended for 18 months. Net pay is 2000 Euros per month and includes benefits of social security. Travel and moving costs are not provided. Applications will be judged by a competitive curriculum review. Please send a detailed resume + List of publications and 2 individuals who can provide a technical reference to Jean-Gabriel MINONZIO ([email protected]) and to Pascal LAUGIER ([email protected]).
