New roads are getting there – eventually #253 From 2010-07-16 to 2010-07-23

Motorists – and residents - in the Charente have had to be patient while the new projects get built Reproduction is forbidden

The end is in sight – just – for the thousands of motorists who drive through the Charente each day on the N 141 and the N 10 main roads and who are awaiting the end of planned bypasses and new sections of dual carriageway. The first set to be finished is the long-awaited bypass of La Rochefoucauld on the N 141, which should be completed by December this year. ‘We are on schedule,’ says Bruno Allafort of the regional public works division the Direction régionale de l'environnement, de l'aménagement et du logement (Dreal). The road itself is virtually complete, and the complex task of joining up the two ends with the existing dual carriageway – at Taponnat and the Pont de «La Bécasse» - will start in September. This will however cause some delays on the existing roads. On the N 10 work on the new section of dual carriageway at Ladiville – Barbezieux has halted for the summer and will resume in September or October. This stretch should be completed by next summer. Back to the N 141 and the bypass of Chabanais is still another two years away from being finished at least. The first work should start in the spring of 2011, with completion of the 12 kilometres by the start of 2013 at the earliest. In the southern end of the department the final stretch of dual carriageway on the N 10 at Reignac-Chevanceaux, will not be ready before 2014. The compulsory purchase of the land for the 11.3km section has begun and the first construction work should begin by the end of 2011. Once the work is finished it will mean there will be dual carriageway on the N 10 from Poitiers to Bordeaux…just 40 years after it was promised by the government of President Pompidou.
