About the Company À propos de la compagnie Hailed by The New York Times as “one of America’s most beloved dance companies,” Miami City Ballet (MCB) is led by Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez and is the United States’ eighth-largest dance company. The Company has 50 dancers. During its October-to-April home season, Miami City Ballet performs in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Naples, Florida, plus special touring engagements nationally and overseas. Word from the Choreographer Mot du chorégraphe The character Carmen started life in a short story, little more than a sketch, by the French author Prosper Mérimée. Georges Bizet took this sketch, adding extra sub-plots to develop it into an opera. In 1967 the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin arranged some of this music for strings and percussion, creating a ballet suite of under an hour. The main challenge for me was to find a way of telling the important points of the story within the economically succinct arc of the Shchedrin suite. It moves fast – there is plenty of joyous music for dancing, but the dark side of the story has to unfold in a way that convinces, without lapsing into some sort of rapid caricature. Carmen is a fascinating character, a wildcat of a gypsy, feisty and volatile, but much more than merely a voluptuous temptress. She is strong and controls her fate. Unflinchingly she accepts her destiny to the point of willingly allowing her own violent death - it is in the cards and so it must happen. My Carmen was made for Scottish Ballet in 2009. In creating it I was wonderfully assisted by Amanda Eyles, at that time Ballet Mistress with Scottish. It has been Amanda who has taught the work to Miami City Ballet and once again I am hugely indebted to her.

La suite de Chtchedrine étant d’une grande concision, il me fallait absolument trouver une façon de raconter les épisodes importants de l’histoire à l’intérieur de ce cadre limité. Le rythme est rapide et la musique de danse est joyeuse et abondante, mais le côté sombre de l’histoire doit s’imposer de manière convaincante, sans prendre l’allure d’une caricature bâclée. Carmen est un personnage fascinant, une bohémienne sauvage, fougueuse et volage, mais beaucoup plus qu’une simple aventurière en quête de volupté. C’est une femme forte qui se prend en main. Elle accepte sa destinée sans sourciller, allant même au-devant de sa propre mort violente puisque les cartes lui avaient prédit qu’elle mourrait ainsi. Lorsque j’ai créé Carmen pour le Scottish Ballet, en 2009, j’ai bénéficié de l’extraordinaire collaboration d’Amanda Eyles, qui en était alors la maîtresse de ballet. C’est Amanda qui a enseigné la chorégraphie de Carmen au Miami City Ballet et encore une fois, je lui dois un immense merci.

Scene 1: Morning

Scène 1 : Le matin

In the town square, girls from the cigar factory mingle with soldiers of the garrison. The women persuade a passing gypsy to read the cards for them, but the first card she turns up is Death. Just as she does this, the carefree young Don José appears. When Carmen joins the girls from the factory, José doesn’t take much notice and this infuriates her. To get his attention she approaches him with seductive languor and offers him an intoxicatingly scented flower. José is intrigued but must report for duty with the garrison. Scarcely has he gone than a fight breaks out amongst the factory girls. Carmen is accused of stealing, and the women gang up on her. Her two friends, Frasquita and Mercedes, try to defend her, but Carmen gets so angry that in a flash of uncontrollable temper, she draws a knife. Mayhem ensues and the garrison arrives. Don José has to arrest Carmen. On the way to jail Carmen pursues her flirtation with José, trying everything to persuade him to release her. She distracts him, sets herself free and makes a hasty escape. José is arrested and thrown into jail.

Carmen is instantly attracted to his charisma, but Escamillo is much more focused on the glories and dangers of the bullring tomorrow.

Its dazzle suggests the best of Broadway. The music was composed for the third-act pas de deux of the Moscow production of Swan Lake but was subsequently discarded by choreographer Marius Petipa. The score lay hidden in the Bolshoi Theatre’s archives for almost a century. When Balanchine learned of its existence, he asked that it be sent to him in New York. Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux was generously underwritten by Jacqueline and Irwin E. Kott. Alexei Ratmansky, by common consent the world’s leading classical choreographer, has created a major work for Miami City Ballet. The music he chose to work with is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s final important work, his large-scale “Symphonic Dances” of 1941 – a work whose turbulent energy and deep emotion perfectly complement the dance qualities for which the company is famous. “There is no real story,” Ratmansky says. “I want the audience to leave with the images and feelings that the movement gives them.” Yet again and again we sense that there are hidden stories, hidden conflicts and resolutions, propelling the large cast through

Lourdes Lopez became Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet (MCB) in September 2012, bringing with her a nearly 40-year career in dance, television, teaching and arts management. As a Soloist and Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet, she danced for two legends of the art form, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. She co-founded Morphoses with Christopher Wheeldon in 2007 -- a New York-based dance company aiming to revitalize dance through innovative collaborations with important artists from the worlds of music, visual arts, design, film and fashion; and by inviting younger and broader audiences to engage in and actively experience dance. Lopez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1958 and raised in Miami by her parents along with

two sisters. She began taking ballet lessons at the age of five, on the recommendation of a doctor. At the age of 11 she received a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet, (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, where she continued her ballet training in Miami during the year and then in New York during the summers. At fourteen, she moved to New York permanently to devote herself to full-time studies at SAB, and shortly after her sixteenth birthday, she joined the corps de ballet of New York City Ballet. Under the direction of George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, her star rose quickly at New York City Ballet where she was soon dancing corps and soloist roles in much of the company’s repertory. She was promoted to Soloist in 1981 and Principal Dancer in 1984, performing countless featured roles including Violin Concerto, Firebird, Serenade, Liebeslieder Walzer, Divertimento No. 15, Symphony in C, Agon, The Four Temperaments, Dances at a Gathering, Glass Pieces, Fancy Free, In the Night, Four Seasons, and Brandenburg. Lopez’s great interest in children also found her writing and contributing to many of the company’s Family Matinee series. Upon retirement, Lopez joined WNBCTV in New York as a Cultural Arts reporter, writing and producing feature segments on the arts, artists and arts education. She was also a full-time senior faculty member and Director of Student Placement, Student Evaluation and Curriculum Planning at New York’s Ballet Academy East. She served on the dance faculty of Barnard College and guest taught at numerous dance institutions and festivals in the United States. In 2002, Lopez became the Executive Director of The George Balanchine Foundation, which works to educate the public about dance and to further the art of ballet, with a special emphasis

Among the events that year was the symposium “Balanchine: Past, Present and Future,” which was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, and which was a collaboration among the Mariinsky Theater, the Hermitage Museum, and The George Balanchine Foundation. Lopez also co-founded The Cuban Artists Fund, which supports Cuban and Cuban-American artists in their endeavors. In 2014 Lopez was elected to serve on the Ford Foundation’s Board of Trustees, marking the first time an artist was elected to serve on its board. In 2007 she received an award from the American Immigration Law Foundation honoring Cuban Americans for their accomplishments and contributions to American society and in 2011, she received the prestigious Jerome Robbins Award for her years in dance. She has served as a dance panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Lopez is married to investment banker George Skouras. They are the parents of two daughters: Adriel and Calliste.
