Chers amateurs de danse,

How honoured we are to return to Canada’s most prestigious theatre. We always look forward to our visits to this region and to the sincere and heartfelt response we receive. Performing alongside one of Canada’s finest orchestras is also a treat for our dancers. We hope Edmund Stripe’s delightful and charming interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece entertains you and reminds you of how beautiful life truly is. The production combines performances by our elegant dancers with the excitement of magical storytelling, along with the power of live musical accompaniment and all the stunning elements of performance design: What better way to inspire your children to believe in our humanity and in the great creations we are capable of. Everyone at Alberta Ballet wishes to thank the wonderful staff of the National Arts Centre and the generous sponsors who care about what we do. Finally, we wish you, our audience, the most wonderful Holiday Season imaginable filled with love, peace and perfect memories. Being in my home city, I would like to take this special moment to dedicate this series of Nutcracker performances to my amazing parents, Lise and Claude GrandMaitre.

Chosen from over two hundred young people who auditioned earlier this autumn, these talented performers from across the region and rehearsed by The School of Dance appear as party children, mice, rats, soldiers and palace pages.

Synopsis

Act I

Premier acte

Our story begins far away in Russia, at the turn of the 19th century. It is Christmas Eve and the Vishinsky family is welcoming guests to a party at their home. Their children, Klara and Nikolai, play ‘Blind Man’s Buff’ with the other young guests at the party. The game ends with Klara catching Nikolai. Presents are distributed and Klara and Nikolai lead the children in a boisterous dance. The parents, in turn, dance a courtly quadrille. Suddenly, there is an interruption. It is the arrival of Drosselmeyer, Klara’s godfather. He has arrived at the party with tricks and mechanical dolls to entertain the guests. His dolls perform an elaborate play, telling the story of a man who once made a mousetrap that was so successful that it enraged the Rat Tsar. The Rat Tsar took revenge on the man by turning his nephew into a hideous nutcracker. The only way to break the spell was to find someone who would love the nutcracker, not for what he looked like, but for what he was. In the play, the young soldier, who is changed into a nutcracker, is helped by a young ballerina who falls in love with him. She defeats the toy Rat Tsar by hitting him on the head with her slipper. After the play, Drosselmeyer invites Klara to dance with him, mysteriously presenting her with a nutcracker of her own. Nikolai accidentally breaks the nutcracker, but Klara soon forgives him. Drosselmeyer fixes the nutcracker, and Klara and the girls play with their dolls, despite some interruption by the boys and a somewhat overexcited grandfather. Grandfather and Babushka are invited to dance, the parents and children joining in the fun.

Les enfants Klara et Nikolaï jouent à colin-maillard avec les autres enfants invités à la fête. Le jeu s’achève lorsque Klara attrape Nikolaï. On distribue les cadeaux et Klara et Nikolaï entraînent les enfants dans une bruyante sarabande. À leur tour, les parents dansent un élégant quadrille. Soudain, tout s’arrête, à l’arrivée de Drosselmeyer, le parrain de Klara. Il a apporté toutes sortes de jeux et d’automates pour distraire les invités. Ses pantins exécutent une pièce complexe racontant l’histoire d’un homme qui avait fabriqué un jour une souricière si efficace qu’il s’attira les foudres du Tsar des rats. Ce dernier voulut se venger en transformant le neveu de l’inventeur en un vilain casse-noisette. Le seul moyen de conjurer le sort était de trouver quelqu’un qui aimerait le casse-noisette non pas pour son apparence, mais pour ce qu’il est. Dans la pièce, le jeune soldat changé en casse-noisette reçoit l’aide d’une jeune ballerine qui tombe amoureuse de lui. Elle arrête l’automate qui personnifie le Tsar des rats en lui donnant un coup de chausson sur la tête. Après la pièce, Drosselmeyer invite Klara à danser avec lui. Étrangement, il lui offre un casse-noisette. Nikolaï brise accidentellement le casse-noisette, mais Klara lui pardonne immédiatement. Drosselmeyer répare le casse-noisette et Klara se met à jouer à la poupée avec les autres filles. Elles sont interrompues de temps à autre par les garçons et par un grand-père surexcité. Klara cherche partout son casse-noisette mais ne le trouve pas. Babouchka conduit Nikolaï et Klara au lit. Pendant la nuit, Klara redescend dans le salon pour chercher son casse-noisette. Tandis que l’horloge de l’hôtel de ville sonne minuit, Klara est encerclée par une foule de souris. Drosselmeyer apparaît soudain et renvoie les souris se coucher. Il explique à Klara que c’était lui le personnage dont parlait la pièce présentée au cours de la soirée. C’est lui qui a construit la souricière qui a rendu furieux le Tsar des rats. Et c’est son neveu Karl qui a été transformé en cassenoisette, le Casse-Noisette que Klara tient actuellement dans ses bras! Klara ayant promis d’aimer le CasseNoisette, Drosselmeyer a recours à ses

The party ends and the guests depart, the parents taking their weary children with them. Drosselmeyer also appears to leave the party. Klara looks around searching frantically for her nutcracker. But it is nowhere to be seen and Babushka packs Nikolai and Klara off to bed. Later that night, Klara returns downstairs to the parlour to search for her nutcracker. The town hall clock strikes midnight and at once she is surrounded by mice. Suddenly, Drosselmeyer appears and sends the mice to sleep. He explains to Klara that it was actually he who was being portrayed in the play earlier that evening and it was he who had built the mousetrap that had angered the Rat Tsar. The Rat Tsar, in revenge, had transformed his nephew, Karl, into a nutcracker, the very nutcracker that Klara was now holding! With Klara’s promise to love the nutcracker, Drosselmeyer employs his magic, causing the room to grow and themselves to

shrink. The nutcracker now reappears, lifesize to the now tiny Klara and Drosselmeyer. An army of soldiers stream out of the fort to engage in a battle with the cossack rats that have gathered on the other side of the parlour. With the nutcracker leading the soldiers, a fierce battle ensues and eventually the Rat Tsar himself appears. With his powerful magic, he attempts to attack Drosselmeyer, but the nutcracker intervenes to save his uncle. Klara remembers the play that Drosselmeyer had presented in the parlour that evening and how the ballerina defeated the Rat Tsar by hitting him on the head with her shoe. She strikes the Rat Tsar on the head, distracting him long enough for the nutcracker to attack him with his own sceptre. The Rat Tsar is mortally wounded and the Nutcracker collapses in pain at the feet of Klara and Drosselmeyer. Drosselmeyer realizes that his plans, and his magic, are still not enough to transform his nephew. Klara and Drosselmeyer sense that their surroundings are changing and as Klara seeks help, she encounters wolves that she thinks are there to devour her precious nutcracker. However, the wolves are the attendants of the Snow Tsarina who appears in her sleigh. She instructs Drosselmeyer to stand the nutcracker up and with a wave of her hand, casts a spell that transforms the nutcracker back into Karl. It takes a moment or two for Karl to realize that he is human again. Once he does, he embraces Drosselmeyer and Klara, and thanks the Snow Tsarina for her life-restoring spell. The Snow Tsarina summons her Snow Princesses and as Klara and Karl frolic in the snow, she guides them towards a mysterious palace far away in the distance.

Le Tsar des rats est mortellement atteint et Casse-Noisette, écrasé de douleur, s’effondre aux pieds de Klara et de Drosselmeyer. Ce dernier comprend que sa stratégie et ses pouvoirs magiques ne suffisent pas à redonner à son neveu son apparence d’antan. Klara et Drosselmeyer se rendent compte que leur environnement est en train de changer et lorsque Klara part chercher de l’aide, elle rencontre des loups qui, penset-elle, sont à la recherche de son précieux Casse-Noisette pour le dévorer. Ce n’est pas du tout ça : les loups sont les serviteurs de la Tsarine des neiges qui arrive sur son traîneau. La Tsarine demande à Drosselmeyer de lever le Casse-Noisette et, d’un geste de la main, lance un sortilège qui lui redonne l’apparence de Karl. Ce dernier reprend ses esprits et réalise au bout de quelques instants qu’il est redevenu humain. Une fois revenu à lui, il embrasse Drosselmeyer et Klara et remercie

la Tsarine des neiges de l’avoir délivré de son sortilege. La Tsarine des neiges fait venir les princesses des neiges et tandis que Klara et Karl s’amusent dans la neige, elle les guide vers un mystérieux palais perdu dans le lointain.

The Snow Tsarina leads the sleigh to the gates of the Palace of the Sugar Plum Fairy. There they are greeted by the Palace Pages and are introduced to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The Sugar Plum Fairy introduces guests from all over the world and one by one they dance for Klara and Karl in celebration. There are dancers from Spain, Arabia, China and Russia. Klara and Karl dance and are then entertained by the Palace Pages and the Waltz of the Flowers. The celebrations continue with the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier dancing for their honoured guests, concluding in a rousing finale.

The next morning, Klara exits the house. She has just woken up from an amazing dream and is not quite sure what is real anymore. Down the street, Drosselmeyer and a young man who seems strangely familiar, appear. Drosselmeyer introduces his nephew, Karl to her. Karl, in turn, gives her a gift. After they depart, she unwraps the gift. It is a nutcracker and Klara begins to wonder whether it was all a dream after all.

Jean Grand-Maître

One of the most successful Canadian choreographers of his generation, Jean Grand-Maître assumed the artistic leadership of Alberta Ballet in 2002. After working internationally for 14 years as an independent choreographer and director, he created and staged new works for many of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies ballet companies, theatre festivals, circus performers, opera companies, musicals, television specials, and for film. He has been commissioned by renowned ballet companies such as the Opéra National de Paris, the Teatro alla Scala, the Stuttgart Ballet, the National Norwegian Ballet, the Bavarian State National Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Ballet British Columbia, the National Ballet of Cuba, Ballet Jörgen, and the Hartford ballet. He was Director of Choreography for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. During his tenure with Alberta Ballet, he has set or choreographed numerous ballets of his own. Jean Grand-Maître, un des chorégraphes canadiens les plus applaudis de sa génération, a pris la direction artistique de l’Alberta Ballet en 2002. A prolific and award-winning choreographer, Mr. Stripe has established a notable career in both contemporary and classical ballet fields as dancer and ballet master. Mr. Stripe was born in London, England and trained at the Royal Ballet School where his distinguished teachers included Walter Trevor, Nancy Kilgour, Piers Beaumont, and Richard Glasstone. He has danced Ballet Gulbenkian (Portugal), London City Ballet, and the West Australian Ballet, where he created many major works for the company. He was appointed Ballet Master for West Australian Ballet in 1998. Mr. Stripe joined Singapore Dance Theatre as Ballet Master in 2000: there he assisted in the mounting and re-creation of works by such noted choreographers as Jirˇí Kylián, Nacho Duato, and Goh Choo San. In 2002 he moved to Alberta Ballet as Ballet Master and over the next decade, assisted with works by George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Christopher Wheeldon and Jean Grand-Maître. His works for Alberta Ballet include Unquiet Light (2003), Swelter (2005), Alice in Wonderland (2006) and The Nutcracker (2008). In July 2013, Mr. Stripe was appointed Artistic Director of The School of Alberta Ballet. He has been closely involved in the creation of Alberta Ballet II and the establishment of the School of Alberta

Peter Dala

Born in Toronto, Peter Dala studied piano and conducting at England’s Royal College of Music. While in London he worked at the Royal Ballet School as a répétiteur which led to become Conductor and Pianist of the Basel Ballet in Switzerland in 1984. He also worked at the International Opera Studio, Zurich Opera, Switzerland where he conducted his first opera, and guest conducted for the Zurich Ballet. In 1988, Dala joined the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest where he conducted both opera and ballet performances. Career highlights include performances of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and Mendelssohn’s ballet A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Singapore and Hong Kong Festival of Arts. He joined Edmonton Opera as Chorus Director/ Répétiteur, where he made his debut conducting Gounod’s Romeo and Juliette (1997). He was Resident Conductor from 2002-2011. Mr. Dala started conducting for Alberta Ballet in 2001 with The Nutcracker, and was appointed Music Director in 2005.

From the Metropolitan Opera to the Spoleto Festival; from the Hamburg Ballet to the Circle in the Square in New York; from the San Francisco Opera to the Maly Theatre in Moscow, Mr. Brown’s talents have been employed throughout the world. Washington, D.C., however, has seen the greatest body of his work with over 40 productions for the Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center, and numerous plays and musicals at Arena Stage and The Shakespeare Theater. He designed the scenery and costumes for the Tony Awardwinning revival of On Your Toes, and he is the recipient of two Emmy Awards for the broadcast of La Gioconda from the San Francisco Opera. Alberta Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, and Pittsburgh Ballet, all have productions of The Nutcracker designed by Mr. Brown. For American Ballet Theater, he has created productions of Swan Lake, Raymonda, Gaite Parisienne, Jardin Aux Lilas and Dim Lustre, Lowell Libermann’s Piano Concerto #1 and Dorian based on “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” Most recently for American Ballet Theatre he designed a new Theme and Variations. He has also designed the settings for Suzanne Farrell’s staging of Balanchine’s Don Quixote for her own company and the National Ballet of Canada.

Oliver is pleased to be returning for a fifth season at Alberta Ballet. Some of his favourite ballet credits are Love Lies Bleeding, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, The Nutcracker, In The Upper Room, Vigil of Angels, The Sleeping Beauty and last season’s Up Close presentation with the men of Alberta Ballet. As a freelancer, Oliver recently acted as Director of Staging for Western Events and Agriculture at the Calgary Stampede, and as Stage Manager and Mentor for the world’s largest student-run fashion show Mass Exodus at his alma mater, Ryerson University. Oliver has also worked with One Yellow Rabbit Ensemble, The High Performance Rodeo, Alberta Theatre Projects and Calgary Opera. He’s also been on the management team for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, The Dubai International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show. His NAC premiere was as a child with the Ottawa Chamber Choir in the

Beverly Bagg

Ms. Bagg began her training in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has transitioned from a dancer into a master teacher. She was accepted at the Royal Ballet School in London, England, and danced soloist and principal roles with the PACT Ballet Company in South Africa for 15 years. Among the roles she performed were Bluebird and Princess Aurora from The Sleeping Beauty, Odette/ Odile from Swan Lake, the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Swanhilda in Coppelia, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Giselle in Giselle, Kitri in Nureyev’s production of Don Quixote, and the lead in Balanchine’s Theme and Variations. She has also performed works by renowned choreographers such as Jirˇí Kylián, John Cranko, Choo San Goh, André Prokovsky, and Sir Frederick Ashton. Since immigrating to Canada, Ms. Bagg has been Ballet Mistress of Ballet BC and is now Ballet Mistress of Alberta Ballet for her sixth season. Ms. Bagg has been instrumental in staging Swan Lake and Giselle for South African Ballet Theatre and Washington Ballet, and she continues to dance professionally, including roles with Alberta Ballet in Mozart’s Requiem and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

Galien Johnston

Galien Johnston received her professional training at Canada’s National Ballet School. Upon graduation, she danced for one year with the National Ballet of Canada before joining the Hamburg Ballet in Germany, dancing in theatres such as the Palais Garnier in Paris, and the Mariinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg. In 2006, Ms. Johnston, along with her husband Yukichi Hattori, was invited to join Alberta Ballet as a principal dancer. Throughout her career, Ms. Johnston has danced as Desdemona in Othello, Dark Angel in Serenade, Anna in The Seven Deadly Sins, the Red pas de deux in Forgotten Land, the Snow Queen and Arabian in The Nutcracker, The Queen and Big Swan in Swan Lake, and the Cellist in Vigil of Angels. She has also worked with leading choreographers and teachers such as John Neumeier, Mavis Staines, Natalia Makarova, Alexander Grant, Sergiu Stefanschi, and Kevin Haigen. Since her retirement from dance in 2011, Ms. Johnston has enjoyed working as a guest teacher at ballet schools throughout Alberta and in Japan. She was also a regular Master Teacher for Alberta Ballet. She was the children’s cast director for Alberta Ballet’s The Nutcracker for two years, and staged the children for Alberta Ballet’s production of Cinderella. She has also remained an active performer, guesting with Alberta Ballet and performing at the Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto, Japan last summer. This is Ms. Johnston’s first season as Ballet Mistress for Alberta Ballet.
