Message de la productrice générale Message from the Executive Producer What a brilliant opportunity Gradimir Pankov, Artistic Director of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, gave to up-andcoming Canadian choreographer Peter Quanz to create a new, full-length ballet for his company. And what a fantastic opportunity for NAC Dance to present this impressive and dramatic work, Rodin/ Claudel, in our Ballet series, set to a string of luscious French compositions beautifully accompanied by NACO. Quanz, who now heads his own company Q DANCE, has been a choreographic vagabond for the last many years, making works for many of the world’s leading ballet companies including American Ballet Theatre, the National Ballet of Cuba, and the Kirov Ballet, with which he was the first Canadian to receive a choreographic commission. Quanz’s fascination with the troubled relationship between famous French sculptors Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel provided excellent inspiration for this passionate and layered new story ballet. Quelle chance inouïe le directeur artistique des Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Gradimir Pankov, a offerte au chorégraphe canadien de la relève Peter Quanz en lui commandant un nouveau ballet intégral pour sa compagnie! Et quelle chance pour Danse CNA que de pouvoir programmer à sa série Ballet le fruit de cette commande, l’œuvre impressionnante et dramatique Rodin/Claudel, réglée sur une magnifique suite de compositions françaises qu’interprète avec brio l’Orchestre du CNA. Maintenant à la tête de sa propre compagnie – Q DANCE –, Peter Quanz a travaillé longtemps comme chorégraphe indépendant, signant des pièces pour bon nombre des plus prestigieuses compagnies de ballet au monde, entre autres l’American Ballet Theatre, le Ballet national de Cuba et le Ballet Kirov (dont c’était la toute première collaboration avec un chorégraphe canadien). La fascination qu’exerce sur le chorégraphe la relation tumultueuse entre les célèbres sculpteurs français Auguste Rodin et Camille Claudel a fortement inspiré ce nouveau ballet narratif passionné, tout en dégradés. About the Company / À propos de la compagnie Ever since Ludmilla Chiriaeff founded the company in 1957, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal has been communicating its passion for dance and firing the imagination of audiences worldwide. This widely acclaimed company is devoted to developing ballet in all its forms, while remaining faithful to the spirit of classical ballet. Les Grands Ballets illuminates stages worldwide, particularly since the appointment of Gradimir Pankov as Artistic Director in 1999. The company’s reputation was reinforced by many international successes: Oman (2012), China (2011), the Middle East (2009), North America and Europe (Madrid, Berlin, Munich and three weeks at Les Étés de la danse in Paris). A leader among Montreal’s cultural institutions, the company now presents works by up and-coming artists — Christian Spuck, Stephan Thoss, Stijn Celis — and great choreographers such as Jirí Kylián, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato and Ohad Naharin. Synopsis

Act I

Premier acte

Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel are born out of a mound of bodies, of clay, of ideas. Their lives are marked from the beginning for creation. The Claudel family sweeps into Camille’s studio. The overbearing madame Claudel demands that Camille create a sculpture of her younger brother, Paul. Camille has to remind her brother to sit still so that she can observe him. Their fun is interrupted when Auguste enters the studio. Paul has invited him to look at Camille’s works. Auguste remembers the chill of his own studios when he was beginning his career. Auguste blindfolds himself so that he is free to touch and feel the shapes of Camille’s sculptures with his hands rather than look at them. After he has sensed her work, he turns, still blindfolded, and has his first contact with Camille – running his hands over her face. When Auguste leaves Camille’s studio, he is met by Rose Beuret, his longtime mistress. She is concerned that he was upstairs so long with the young artist. Rose desires Auguste’s affection but must settle for the warmth of his coat as he leaves her alone on the street. Paul aspires to be a diplomat and writer. Desperate to make a name for himself, he pleads with Auguste for introductions to influential people who can help him. Auguste agrees, out of pity and a desire to continue his relationship with Camille. Work on the Gates of Hell is progressing well at Auguste’s studio. Many artisans have been employed, and they carry out the master sculptor’s orders. Auguste enters and tries to conceive of a new idea with his models, but nothing satisfies him. Camille enters, ready to work as an artisan. She suggests an idea to Auguste and soon finds herself the model

Auguste Rodin et Camille Claudel jaillissent d’un monceau de corps, de terre glaise et d’idées. Leurs vies sont marquées, dès le début, par la création. La famille Claudel fait irruption dans l’atelier de Camille. L’autoritaire madame Claudel enjoint sa fille de sculpter le portrait de son jeune frère Paul, qui doit garder la pose pour permettre à Camille de l’observer à sa guise. Ils sont interrompus par l’arrivée de Rodin, invité par Paul à découvrir les œuvres de Camille. Rodin se souvient de l’excitation qui régnait dans son atelier au début de sa carrière. Il se bande les yeux afin d’appréhender et de sentir les formes des sculptures de Camille par les mains plutôt que par les yeux. Puis il se tourne vers Camille, les yeux toujours bandés, et a son premier contact avec elle quand il effleure son visage du bout des doigts. Rodin retrouve Rose Beuret, sa maîtresse de longue date, qui l’attend, inquiète du temps qu’il a passé là-haut avec la jeune artiste. Rose cherche l’affection de Rodin, mais doit se contenter de la chaleur de son manteau alors qu’il l’abandonne dans la rue. Paul aspire à une carrière de diplomate et d’écrivain. Tentant désespérément de se faire un nom, il demande à Rodin de le présenter à ses relations influentes. Rodin accepte, par pitié et dans l’espoir de continuer sa relation avec Camille. Le travail sur La Porte de l’enfer progresse dans l’atelier de Rodin où plusieurs artisans ont été engagés sous les ordres du maître. À son arrivée à l’atelier, Rodin tente de concevoir une nouvelle idée avec ses modèles, mais rien ne le satisfait. Camille arrive à son tour pour se joindre à l’équipe d’assistants. Elle devient bientôt le modèle d’une série de ses œuvres. Rodin et Camille se lient intimement.

for a series of his works. Auguste and Camille become intimately entangled. Everyone in the studio, including Rose, can sense the new relationship between the two sculptors. The Claudel family invites Auguste and Rose on a family picnic. Underlying tensions stir and lead to a confrontation between Rose, Camille and Auguste. Camille knows she is pregnant with Auguste’s child, but she doesn’t tell him. She demands that Auguste choose between her and Rose. He is unable to make a choice and runs away.

Leur complicité naissante est évidente pour tous dans l’atelier, y compris pour Rose. Les Claudel invitent Rodin et Rose à un pique-nique familial. La tension est palpable et provoque une confrontation entre Rose, Camille et Rodin. Camille, enceinte de l’enfant de Rodin, n’en souffle mot. Elle somme Rodin de choisir entre elle et Rose. Incapable de trancher, il s’enfuit.

Act II

Deuxième acte

Camille believes that as a single woman, she has no alternative but to have an abortion. She checks herself into a hospital that is willing to perform the illegal and very expensive procedure. Intensely emotional after the operation, Camille fantasizes about her work. She sees bodies, sculptures and movement. Camille sets up her sculptures for an exhibition of her work. Paul creeps in and suggests that she clean up before the opening. When the guests arrive, Paul shows off his sister’s work, but his mind is focused on social climbing. There is a stunned silence when Camille makes a flashy entrance in an outrageous red dress. The snobs ridicule her, sniffing that Camille can only imitate Auguste’s style and expression. This infuriates Camille. Still reeling from her failed relationship with Auguste and the loss of her child, she smashes her own sculptures in a rage. Auguste quietly watches Camille’s destruction. He tries to calm her, but she is too unpredictable and wild for him to manage. Paul returns with a doctor and nurses from the hospital. Camille is restrained and led away–devoured by her own ideas, thoughts and creativity. Auguste is left with Rose at his side to ponder Camille’s fate and her place in his life.

Mère célibataire, Camille doit se résigner à avorter. Elle se présente dans un hôpital où on accepte de pratiquer cette intervention alors illégale, et très onéreuse. Les émotions à vif après l’opération, elle fantasme sur son œuvre et imagine des corps et des sculptures en mouvement. Camille s’affaire aux préparatifs d’une exposition. Paul lui suggère de nettoyer les lieux avant le vernissage. Puis il présente le travail de sa sœur aux invités, mais son esprit est ailleurs, davantage préoccupé par son ascension sociale. Camille fait une entrée remarquée dans une extravagante robe rouge et est accueillie par un silence figé. Elle est raillée par des snobs qui chuchotent qu’elle ne fait qu’imiter le style et l’expression de Rodin. Furieuse, encore ébranlée par sa rupture avec Rodin et la perte de son enfant, elle fracasse ses sculptures dans un accès de rage. Rodin assiste en silence à la destruction de Camille. Il tente de la contrôler, mais elle est hors d’elle. Avec l’aide d’un médecin et d’infirmières, Paul arrive à maîtriser sa sœur, consumée par ses idées, ses réflexions et sa créativité. Ils l’emmènent avec eux. Reste Rodin, aux côtés de Rose, qui médite sur le destin de Camille et sa place dans sa vie.

Peter Quanz

Peter Quanz is an award winning Canadian choreographer, internationally renowned for his collaborations with leading dance companies and cultural institutions. He is Artistic Director of Q DANCE, a creative laboratory of new dance that enjoys a presenting partnership with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Peter has choreographed for dance companies, opera and theatre, and has created ballets for the Mariinsky Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Royal Ballet (Linbury Theatre), Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba, and the National Ballet of Canada. He created In Tandem for Works & Process at the Guggenheim Museum, NYC. His creations Double Bounce and Luminous have been seen by more than five million people.

Peter Quanz est un chorégraphe canadien maintes fois primé, internationalement reconnu pour ses collaborations avec les plus grandes compagnies de danse et institutions culturelles au monde. Il est le directeur artistique de Q DANCE, un laboratoire créatif de nouvelle danse qui bénéficie d’un partenariat de présentation avec le Royal Winnipeg Ballet du Canada. Allan Lewis

The music director and principal conductor of the Joffrey Ballet for over twenty years, Allan Lewis was at the rostrum during the company’s historic re-staging of Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring in Paris in 1990. He also conducted the Joffrey’s Homage to Diaghilev starring Rudolf Nureyev, both on Broadway and at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Among the renowned orchestras Mr. Lewis has conducted over the course of his international career are: San Francisco Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Netherlands Philharmonic, Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, Orchestra of the National Theatre of Prague, Budapest Philharmonic and

Florian Ziemen

Born in Munich, conductor Florian Ziemen began his musical education at the age of six at the Munich Conservatory and Musikhochschule. He continued his studies at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London with Colin Metters and George Hurst. In 2003, Ziemen began working at the Aalto-Musiktheater in Essen, one of Germany’s most famous opera houses, where he conducted over 100 operas, operettas and ballet performances.
From 2010 to 2012, as resident conductor of the opera house in Bremen, he conducted sensational successes such as his ‘historically informed’ productions of German and Austrian operettas as well as the world premiere of Moritz Eggert’s every-day-life opera All diese Tage. Invitations have led to appearances conducting the Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, Bochumer Symphoniker, Bergische Symphoniker, Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal, Münchner Symphoniker, Philharmonisches Orchester Bad Reichenhall, Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt, Georgian Chamber Orchestra and others. In August 2012, Florian Ziemen was appointed to the opera house of Gießen where he conducts operas, symphony concerts and ballet productions. In 2010, he made his debut at the Grands Ballets with Christian Spuck’s Leonce and Lena. He also designed the musical score for choreographer Peter Quanz’s production of Rodin/Claudel.

Né à Munich, Florian Ziemen commence sa formation musicale dès l’âge de six ans au Conservatoire et à la Musikhochschule de sa ville natale. Il poursuit ses études à la prestigieuse Académie royale de musique de Londres sous la tutelle de Colin Metters et de George Hurst. En 2003, il commence à travailler avec l’Aalto Musiktheater à Essen, l’un des plus célèbres opéras d’Allemagne, où il dirige plus d’une centaine d’opéras, opérettes et ballets. Chef résident de l’Opéra de Brême de 2010 à 2012, il y a proposé de grands succès tels que ses opérettes baroqueuses allemandes et autrichiennes et la première mondiale de l’opéra All diese Tage de Moritz Eggert. En tant que chef invité, il a dirigé notamment les orchestres symphoniques de Munich et de Wuppertal, le Philharmonisches Orchester Bad Reichenhall, la Neue Philharmonie de Francfort et le Georgian Chamber Orchestra. Depuis 2012, il est en charge de l’opéra de Gießen, où il dirige opéras, concerts symphoniques et ballets. Il a fait ses débuts aux Grands Ballets en 2010 avec Léonce et Léna de Christian Spuck. C’est à lui que Peter Quanz a confié l’écriture de la partition musicale de Rodin/Claudel.

Michael Gianfrancesco

Michael Gianfrancesco is a Toronto-based set and costume designer who has collaborated on numerous theatre, opera and dance productions throughout Canada. In eight seasons at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, he has designed sets and costumes at the Avon and Studio theatres, most recently creating the set for Hosanna by Michel Tremblay. He has also designed for The Shaw Festival, Manitoba Theatre Centre, The Canadian Stage Company, The National Ballet of Canada, The Canadian Opera Company, Theatre Calgary, The Citadel Theatre, The Grand Theatre, and numerous independent Toronto companies. In 2006, he designed the sets for the opera The Midnight Court for Queen of Puddings Music Theatre, which toured to the Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 2008 Michael received the Virginia and Myrtle Cooper Award for Costume Design from the Ontario Arts Foundation. He has also received a Tyrone Guthrie Award and Brian Jackson Award from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

Marc Parent

Marc Parent has worked as a lighting designer for over twenty-five years, creating more than one hundred designs. Specializing in contemporary dance, he has collaborated with several choreographers from Canada and abroad, including Peggy Baker, Danièle Desnoyers, Daniel Léveillé, José Navas and Holy Body Tattoo. He has also worked on several occasions in theatre and opera, with such directors as Denis Marleau, François Girard and Martin Faucher. He has been the resident lighting designer for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal for some ten years.

Concepteur d’éclairages depuis près de 25 ans, Marc Parent a créé à ce jour plus d’une centaine d’éclairages. Spécialisé en danse contemporaine, il a collaboré avec plusieurs chorégraphes d’ici et d’ailleurs, dont Peggy Baker, Danièle Desnoyers, Daniel Léveillé, José Navas et Holy Body Tattoo. Il a également travaillé à plusieurs reprises pour le théâtre et l’opéra, notamment avec les metteurs en scène Denis Marleau, François Girard et Martin Faucher.
